They are put down because it is celebrating white culture and that is not allowed. Irish music has influenced many forms of music. In the US it influenced black music, black dance and culture. Slaves and Irish/Scottish immigrants worked together, ate together and shared music together as Irish/Scots worked as share croppers and field hands and many were indentured servants (slaves) as well.

This was 1 one of the proudest moments in Irish history. I lived in Dublin at the time of this performence. A friend of mine had tipped me off to the interval show. He worked on the lighting design. Me & my friends sat in our apartment about 1/2 a mile from the venue, The Point Depot. We were stunned & blown away by the performence, so much we wanted to get as close to the venue as possible to try and soak up the amazing atmosphere & pride that night. We were not the only 1's to come up with that idea. Half of Dublin must have decended on the venue. It was a moment, performence and a night I will never ever forget as a proud Irish man.

Irish dancers dance on the spot, because in the old days, in rural Ireland, they took out the wooden door of their tiny houses and laid it on the muddy uneven ground. Neighbours often gathered to join in with music and singing. The wooden door gave the tapping sound, but also limited the dancers in making big movements, due to the small size of the dance “floor”.

This was a very important moment for Irish pride as well as the entire Gaelic diaspora around the world. It took the cultural traditions and portrayed them in a modern form that felt epic and elegant and even sexy.
I grew up with Celtic musical traditions, as part of the Celtic diaspora in Canada, and for our culture to suddenly become cool was a big moment.
You might be interested in the recent rise of artists who fuse Celtic music with Indian music. I moved to a region of Canada with a large Punjabi population, and I learned about a local band called Delhi 2 Dublin that fused Irish sounds with Punjabi sounds as well as modern sounds, and it reignited by childhood interest in Celtic music. I've since learned about artists such as The Snake Charmer, and bands like Jiggy, that also combine Celtic and Indian music together. There's some commonality between the two cultures that makes the music fit together seamlessly and naturally, and it's beautiful to hear.

That is no easy task! To start that at 48 takes courage, and you competed. That's pretty amazing. I'm desperate to do adult ballet, just the barre exercises, but I use a wheelchair now, so I can't see it happening. On the odd occasion I make it to a concert or something, I'm still the first person dancing, just from the waist upwards! I'd love to have learnt Irish dance. I'm really impressed, I see why you'd be in such good shape.

I still remember seeing this performance and being astounded but also slightly amused because it really was such a different kind of dance. Years later, I was lucky enough to see a performance of Lord of the Dance, live. Wow! Wonderful! Superb! Not enough superlatives in the world to describe the skill and energy. I loved seeing this reaction because, as always, these chaps are spot on with their observations. They never miss a thing and are always so positive. Fantastic stuff.

Oh, that wasn't just a reaction to the dancing style, but to the very birthing moment of the show! Very awesome choice - a little piece of dancing history even.
Particularly loved the comparison of Babu to Michael Jackson's dancing style. Had the same thought just seconds before.
Now I would love to see their reaction to a Bavarian Schuhplattler! :D

Truly the greatest televised/ on-screen performance of Riverdance. I know it's been going for the last 30 years now, and Lord of The Dance is arguably bigger and bolder, but this very performance right here was absolute perfection and arguably the most impactful performance in the shows history.

I (like many young Irish kids) did Irish dancing lessons growing up and let me tell you to see this on the worlds stage was amazing to us. 30 years later and it still makes me emotional. I've been lucky enough to see this entire show live on stage, something I'd highly recommend to anyone to go see ❤

Hi guys! The entire dance is about an hour long. The dancers mostly use their feet, which is why it's called step dancing. I like Irish music a lot, both trad and contemporary.

    • @tsmeman63
      @tsmeman63 Год назад

The dance doesn’t last an hour. Are you for real? This was designed as intermezzo for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Dancing like this for one hour continuously would be killing yourself.

@@tsmeman63this piece birthed the whole Riverdance show that came after and travelled all over the world. The whole show is an hour long but of course the dancers are coming and going and telling a story not dancing non-stop for a full hour.

Watching it for the umpteenth time. I saw it on the night on TV with Terry Wogan's comments, priceless! There never has been an interlude while the votes are counted quite like that again.
Made millions when made into a show and seen all over the world. I love their comments. I've grown to love Bollywood dances too. Both superb in their own ways.

There was one of their performances i believe was called Lord of the Dance and there was a rivalry act in the show. The 2 performers did a dance off and each time they would get faster and faster with their feet. It was amazing
