This list was very disappointing. So many excellent dances left off the list for example the dance from White Nights with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines.
This video made me literally crash out seeing Fred Astaire snubbed. No disrespect to Gene Kelly, he’s great in his own right, but Fred Astaire has SO MANY more iconic numbers. The Royal Wedding Ceiling dance that has inspired so many routines after it, Puttin on the Ritz, the Hat Rack dance, Shall We Dance, the firecracker dance from Holiday Inn, the roller skate dance, literally ANY number with Ginger Rogers. He was so innovative with his choreography and the fact he’s not mentioned ANYWHERE in this video disqualifies this whole list.
A Slap In The Face? It's A Spit In In The Face That You're The One I Want/We Go Together From Grease Didn't Even Made The List Nor Honorable Mention!!!!!!!
My favorite dance routine ever is the one in White Nights with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. The blending of classical ballet and tap is amazing.. why are most of these choices revivals?
Because that’s all these kids ever saw: “Revivals.” Or “Based on the Life of….” some dead person *no one* in the audience or on the stage can identify. Kinda like, “Who was George Washington?!” Or “Who is the current President?!”-we allllll wanna forget this regurgitated mess.
Umm....Gene Kelly was great both as a dancer and a choreographer, no doubt. But he didn’t dance that 17 minute ballet by himself. Leslie Caron was a wonderful dancer, and an actress in her own right. You could have at least mentioned her. And speaking of mentioning well-known dancers who are also actors, Russ Tamblyn was in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and West Side Story, just to name a couple. He deserves a mention, as well.
George Chakiris was in Brigadoon, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and White Christmas, as well. Many of them were fantastic dancers in West Side Story. I'm disappointed they didn't mention Leslie Caron, too.
The Chorus Line reprise is literally just high kicking for the entire song. Hardly great. So many better choices for the 3rd spot. Any of the honorable mentions were better than that.
My number one would've been The Nicholas Brothers' performance of Jumpin' Jive from the movie Stormy Weather. I would have at least mentioned Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov with their Dance in the Movie White Nights. I would have for sure put in at least one Fred Astaire number, any one of them really, he deserved to be on the list for sure.
I may be biased but when i think of iconic dance routines i always think of Riverdance which was a worldwide phenomenon and brought the relatively unknown irish dancing to the masses and has spawned countless other similar shoes such as lord of the dance and feet of flames
Yule Brenner only had one lung by this point in his life having lost one to lung cancer. He makes the dance look so effortless but at every break he had to suck the bottom out of an oxygen bottle.
Right?! I mean... Many dancers were not mentioned in this special. This was lacking. It gave us a lot to wonder about who was left out of this presentation.
Friends, if you haven't seen Strictly Ballroom, do yourself a favor! That scene at the end is a winner, but the whole movie is kitschy and captivating.
The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing. Vera Ellen and Danny Kaye! He just floats. All of Vera's dances from White Christmas. All of Vera's dances from everything.
OMG, when you're saying "Of All Time," but no mention of Fred Astaire (with or without the incredible Ginger Rogers)????? MsMojo workers should stretch beyond their own lifetimes to look for inspiration!
Agree with your top pick, but it hurts that you used my favorite in your lead-in but never ranked it. Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr were brilliant in "The King and I" and their dance scene deserved at least an honorable mention.
The "Broadway Melody" sequence from "Singin' in the Rain" with Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly is my favorite dance sequence of all time. Her incredible leg extensions are in a class of their own.
I'm with ya, sister! No Astaire & Rogers???! Despicable! Also agree, the Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather are totally wonderful. Who put this list together? A 14 year old?
That’s what made me click on the video. lol While not technically a complicated dance, it is one of the most sexually charged musical dance numbers ever filmed.
Saturday Night Live, John Travolta dancing on those changing color dance floor disco scene. Wednesday dancing at the school dance doing some quirky weird dance memorable. There is nothing like a dam, South Pacific. Guys and dolls lady luck. Just to name a few more.
As usual there's disrespect for anything in black and white. Meaning they leave out some of the greatest dances in movie history. In no particular order: Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell - Begin the Beguine (Broadway Melody of 1940); Busby Berkeley's Lullaby of Broadway (Goldiggers of 1933); Whiteys Lindy Hoppers (Hellzapoppin); and possible the greatest of all the Nicholas Brothers - Jumpin' Jive (Stormy Weather).
Swing Kids - The Sing Sing Sing dance The King And I - Shall We Dance They showed a snipit of it in the introduction, but didn't feature it. It may not have been the most complicated dance number in a movie but it's one of the most influential - Springtime For Hitler and Germany - The Producers Hair - Aquarius It's interesting because in the Milos Forman movie it was shot outside in a park, not in a perfect indoor sound stage. However great all these dance numbers are nothing beats the Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather. I've never seen it replicated. The Nicholas Brothers are number 1.
My partner and I attended a live performance of Cats in San Francisco when it was so wildly popular. She fell asleep. I was extremely BORED, but managed to stay awake. To this day I don’t understand it’s popularity!
When I was a kid, I wanted to be like Paula Kelly, and met her later in my career, and hung out with her at one of her favorites spots several times. I'm just glad I got to thank her in person for inspiring me so much! I loved "Cool" from West Side Story. That to me was THE best dance sequence from a movie musical. And the camera work, enhanced it. Rather than make you feel like you didn't quite see what was there the way quick cut filming is done now. Such as with the "Roxanne" tango. A two hour long music video is frustrating.
Points off Baz Lurman for not knowing how to film dancers. Fred Astaire figured out in the 1930's that you don't cut dancers off at the waist. Fred insisted that directors not do it to him and his dance partners. You show their whole bodies and how those bodies move through space.
In "Annie" when they sing "We've Got Annie" as well as "Hard Knock Life". The final dance in "Center Stage". In "Singin' In The Rain", the "Good Morning" dance. Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" where Jason Alexander is in the village ordering things because "The Prince Is Throwing A Ball". Blast From The Past with Brendan Fraser dancing a swing dance. 💃🏻🕺🏻
The choreography is always a treat to watch. I would try, and typically fail, to copy the energetic dance moves from "West Side Story" when I was little.
One of my favorites is a dance routine from Holiday Inn performed by Fred Astaire. It's the one where he is dancing with firecrackers. I personally didn't like the story line of A Chorus Line when I saw it, but have to admit the finale was incredible.
I think that Jennifer Beals performed the bucket routine in the beginning, but a male dance double stood in for her during the ending audition sequence.
I had that thought after seeing Wicked in theaters the first time. The choreography in that movie is _incredible,_ especially during Dancing Through Life.
I read somewhere that Donald O’ Connor ended up in the hospital after filming Make ‘Em Laugh. In between him throwing himself around like that and being a heavy smoker, it took a toll on his body. Crazy stuff. 😳
This list was very skewed toward newer productions. Not that there aren't some great newer numbers, but if you just consider the well of talent the old studio system had to draw from, this just seems unbalanced. How could you overlook the Nicholas Brothers doing "Jumpin' Jive" or Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in Hellzapoppin? Not to mention dancers like Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, and Cyd Charisse.
I would add Dick Van Dyke "Me Old Bamboo" in ChittyChity Bang Bang and Dany Kay "The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing" in White Christmas with Vera Ellen.
Missed Gregory Hines in, The Cotton Club, Tap with all of the other great tappers in the movie, and White Nights. There are so many more dancing scenes and dancers that were not mentioned.
That would have been my pick from Sweet Charity. Although Big Spender, There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This, and I'm a Brass Band are all fantastic.
Zoro Antonio Banderas and Katherine Zita Jones brought the fire! Makes some of your selections look tasteless, but thanks for trying. I did enjoy the goosebumps from three that you selected.
Where is Fred Astaire????? I agree with singing in the rain but that and Mr Astaire’s dancing on the ceiling from royal wedding should have ranked number one and two in either order. Grease had two dances worthy, your the one that I want and hand jive. Nobody ever hear of Busby Berkeley? Talk about being in sync. Any one of his musicals should have qualified. And finally shall we dance deserved a much better ranking. My whole life ( and I am 69) I dreamt of waltzing around a huge room in an impossibly huge skirt that did this amazing swirl with each twirl. Besides YOU try dancing like that in a skirt that could be shot into space and become a satellite. Some of your picks I never even heard of. Most of us get our choices from movies and tv, not broadway. In my opinion, this was a bad review that should have a do over with better judges. I just read all the comments and wow, the deserving dances mentioned by everyone blow this list out of the water.😊
Of all time? That's a bit ambitious. While there isn't anything I would remove, there are some notable omissions. Step in Time is not the only Dick Van Dyke routine that should be here. Y'all need to give Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a look. I saw someone mention White Nights and I would have to agree, there was plenty to choose from in that movie alone. Also, no Fred Astaire? Really?
This list was very disappointing. So many excellent dances left off the list for example the dance from White Nights with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines.
Exactly!
God I love that!!!
I was just coming here to say that!
What about Lord of the Dance or does that not qualify?
Just watching Baryshnikov stretch before that dance was something else. My pick from west side story was the Jet song.
How could you possibly leave out the Nicholas Brothers dance routine in Stormy Weather?!!! None of these even comes close to their brilliance!
Absolutely! Their routine in this film in jaw-dropping and should be Number One.
Absolutely.
No mention of the scene from Royal Wedding where Fred Astaire was dancing on both the walls and ceiling?
So no Fred Astaire that’s a slap in the face.
It makes this list null and void
No kidding.
A Slap In The Face? It's A Spit In In The Face That You're The One I Want/We Go Together From Grease Didn't Even Made The List Nor Honorable Mention!!!!!!!
@ there are many other dances that should be in this list.
Fred is a must! The rest of the choices were good.
The chair dance to Mein Herr in Cabaret. The Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather. Anything by Fred Astaire but especially with Ginger Rogers.
Oh you’re right-how could the Nicholas Brothers have been overlooked!
Fred's 4th of July number from Holiday Inn.
Or Eleanor Powel’s “Fascinating Rhythm”.
Ooh yes
All the dancing in Cabaret, far as I'm concerned.
My favorite dance routine ever is the one in White Nights with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. The blending of classical ballet and tap is amazing.. why are most of these choices revivals?
they also left out the final dances from many dance movies... it was very musical heavy, this list.
"Me Old Bamboo" in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang never gets enough recognition.
Came here just to say this! I've always preferred Me Ol' Bamboo to the Mary Poppins Chimney dance.
I agree. One of my absolute favorite dance scenes!
@@dmrmkw Me too!
Right?! I was thinking the same about Leslie Caron -- no mention at all.
George Chakiris was in Brigadoon, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and White Christmas, as well. Many of them were fantastic dancers in West Side Story. I'm disappointed they didn't mention Leslie Caron, too.
Ben Vereen in Pippin!
@@deborahabston4222 Yeah, they didn't mention him, either. He was also the Mayor on Zoobilee Zoo, too
The Chorus Line reprise is literally just high kicking for the entire song. Hardly great. So many better choices for the 3rd spot. Any of the honorable mentions were better than that.
My thought as well. Certainly iconic but not for stellar dance moves.
Nicholas brothers!
And James Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy. It's like he's a puppet because it
looks like his feet never touch the floor.
Glad to see the Bottle Dance from Fiffler on the Roof was not ignored. It should have been rated much higher, this brief epic dance is epic.
One of my absolute favorites!
You put Romy & Michelle on hete and left Footloose out altogether? What the hell??
Yeah, I don’t get that at all.
I may be biased but when i think of iconic dance routines i always think of Riverdance which was a worldwide phenomenon and brought the relatively unknown irish dancing to the masses and has spawned countless other similar shoes such as lord of the dance and feet of flames
@@dancerjono very true and great point.
Every time I watch DWTS I always wonder why they never do this style, it's so amazing to watch!
Riverdance with Michael Flatley
No Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines?
The Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather. Top Ten.
Crapshooters Ballet in GUYS AND DOLLS.
That should have been top 3 for sure, it's considered one of the best dance sequences ever filmed.
Why tease us with The King and I in the intro, then not mention it?!
Mandy from White Christmas should be here. And Hard Knock Life from Annie
From Oliver Consider Yourself and You've Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two.
Yule Brenner only had one lung by this point in his life having lost one to lung cancer. He makes
the dance look so effortless but at every break he had to suck the bottom out of an oxygen bottle.
So there are no musicals on your list including Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. ?????
Right?!
Just gave me goosebumps
I haven't seen it in like 20 years and watching this made me go "damn I really need to watch that again!"
I guess you never saw a Fred Astaire movie 🫤
I was certain that Fred Astaire's dance with a coat rack in Royal Wedding would have made the list.
I would have thought that the Mandy routine from White Christmas would have been included! Vera-Ellen was unmatched.
Agree with your top pick, but it hurts that you used my favorite in your lead-in but never ranked it. Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr were brilliant in "The King and I" and their dance scene deserved at least an honorable mention.
What! No Saturday night Fever, it started with the whole Disco dance revolution in the late 70's.
The "Broadway Melody" sequence from "Singin' in the Rain" with Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly is my favorite dance sequence of all time. Her incredible leg extensions are in a class of their own.
I'm with ya, sister! No Astaire & Rogers???!
Despicable! Also agree, the Nicholas
Brothers in Stormy Weather are totally
wonderful. Who put this list together?
A 14 year old?
uh, where is Shall We Dance, and that reach that made women everywhere swoon?!
That’s what made me click on the video. lol
While not technically a complicated dance, it is one of the most sexually charged musical dance numbers ever filmed.
Which Shall We Dance are you referring to?
@@sandraelder1101 the one from the King and I.
Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen in White Christmas!!
So true ! That number "The Best Things Happen While Your Dancing" was amazing ! Danny Kaye deserves more credit.
The dance in Oliver "who will buy this wonderful feeling"
Saturday Night Live, John Travolta dancing on those changing color dance floor disco scene. Wednesday dancing at the school dance doing some quirky weird dance memorable. There is nothing like a dam, South Pacific. Guys and dolls lady luck. Just to name a few more.
@@ahleenlupo7421 the movie is Saturday Night Fever. Saturday Night Live was a comedy show

The 2 men in white tailcoats tap dancing down white stairs is one of my favs...early cinema.
The Nicholas Brothers from Stormy Weather
@RynKimVay thank you for posting their names...and confirmation of my good taste in dance numbers!:-):-)
"The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing" - White Christmas
That is one of my favorites. Danny Kaye was amazing.....
So many good dance routines are missing from this - the one I was waiting for was Footloose.
I agree, Fred Astaire was great. I am wondering abt 2 ommissions..Thriller w Michael Jackson, and anything from the Greatest Showman.
Swing Kids - The Sing Sing Sing dance
The King And I - Shall We Dance They showed a snipit of it in the introduction, but didn't feature it.
It may not have been the most complicated dance number in a movie but it's one of the most influential - Springtime For Hitler and Germany - The Producers
Hair - Aquarius It's interesting because in the Milos Forman movie it was shot outside in a park, not in a perfect indoor sound stage.
However great all these dance numbers are nothing beats the Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather. I've never seen it replicated. The Nicholas Brothers are number 1.
The barn dance from 7 brides for 7 brothers should be number 1 it's just the best
I agree, just ABFAB!
What about Shirley temple and bojangles.
I recommend you include the dance scene from the Indian movie RRR. It’s brilliant and I believe the song was nominated for an Oscar. Simply brilliant!
3:15 "lead player"? That was Ben Vereen, y'all!
I was surprised his name was not mentioned in the clip.
Happy 100th Birthday Dick Van Dyke.
He's actually 99 but close enough!
I thought he was dead
There is lovely video with Dick van Dyke and Chris Martin made recently. He’s still dancing!
You can't double up on Kelly and skip Astaire. Girl Hunt Ballet (basically inventing Michael Jackson...)
Thank you! A top 20 list should have 1 if not 2 Fred Astaire numbers.
Be fair, Michael has already released Bille Jean, Bad, Thriller and Beat It before he released Smooth Criminal and did his homage to Fred Astaire.
Kelly was twice the everything that Astaire was. I have studied them both and Kelly makes Astaire look like an average Joe.
Wow, not naming Ben Vereen in the Manson Trio number from Pippin?! "The lead" instead of calling out a great dancer?!
Your selections leave a lot to be desired. I ran it at 2x just to get thru it & be disappointed to the very end!
It’s a hard knock life from Annie should be on this list.
I would have put Dirty Dancing at the top of the list! That finale number gets my heart soaring every time!
My partner and I attended a live performance of Cats in San Francisco when it was so wildly popular. She fell asleep. I was extremely BORED, but managed to stay awake. To this day I don’t understand it’s popularity!
Same friend. Same.
Me neither. I was bored to tears.

The King & I really no mention!?
Shall we dance was on the list, but with a very low ranking, not the one it deserved.
Ann Reinking’s rendition of All the Jazz is perfection.
Shame you left out Vera Ellen's dancing in White Christmas... Her dancing was way over the top!
Saturday Night Fever!
How about ANY dance scene in Hello Dolly!!!!!!
West SIDE story - américa
Footloose - Footloose
Fred Astaire
Strictly Ballroom!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
So glad that made the cut.
Me too , love that dance , loved Paul Mercurio
Mary Poppins is full of some of the best dances in stage and screen
Danny and Vera are both outstanding. I love the little tricky moves. So much fun.
The Nicholas Brothers iconic routine and please mention Ben Vereen from Pipin
Yul Brynner & Deborah Kerr's waltz made me a fan for life; I was just kid when the movie was released. 😊 ❤ 👏
My favorite is in Victor/Victoria, Hot Jazz and the last Matador dance.
The choreography is always a treat to watch. I would try, and typically fail, to copy the energetic dance moves from "West Side Story" when I was little.
There are so many. We need to see more.
The tango from Evita
There have has been nor will there ever will be another like the late, great, Bob Fosse.
Maybe the list needs to be changed to Best 100.
The Romy & Michelle dance had me crying from laughter in the theater ❤❤❤
One of my favorites is a dance routine from Holiday Inn performed by Fred Astaire. It's the one where he is dancing with firecrackers. I personally didn't like the story line of A Chorus Line when I saw it, but have to admit the finale was incredible.
So much missed here
The ballet scene from Oklahoma! was truly innovative and beautifully executed.
And Carousel Waltz from Carousel
Huh? What about Fred Astaire? Not to mention his Ladies?!
"Nine" always gets left out of these type videos.
This list feels incomplete... Part 2 needed!
Tough list to make, but eliminating duplicate entries such as Chicago in favor of classics such Astaire & Roger’s might be an improvement.
I wonder how many hours did the actress in Flashdance had to work to nail that iconic scene.
It is sad she was not famous after all that talent.😢
The actress, Jennifer Beals, didn't dance in that iconic scene, and throughout the movie. It was a body/dance double.
She didn’t do any of her own dancing and the breakdancing was performed by a man in a wig.
I think that Jennifer Beals performed the bucket routine in the beginning, but a male dance double stood in for her during the ending audition sequence.
She had a dance double
No Fred Astaire, No Nicholas Brothers means it's a VERY BAD list
Not enough dance teachers don't get enough credit in movies including musicals they deserve Oscar nominations and awards too
I had that thought after seeing Wicked in theaters the first time. The choreography in that movie is _incredible,_ especially during Dancing Through Life.

When I hear "Singin' In The Rain," I hear A Clockwork Orange 🤘👍
Having done the bottle dance in a high school production many years ago it was so much fun.
i did it when i was in middle school! everyone thought the bottles were velcro but we worked for months were able to balance them
I would add Dick Van Dyke "Me Old Bamboo" in ChittyChity Bang Bang and Dany Kay "The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing" in White Christmas with Vera Ellen.
Missed Gregory Hines in, The Cotton Club, Tap with all of the other great tappers in the movie, and White Nights. There are so many more dancing scenes and dancers that were not mentioned.
not even an honorable mention for one of the many dance numbers from "cabaret"?
One of the Chicago routines could have been taken by any routine from Fred Astaire.
Sweet Charity, Rich Man’s Frug is outstanding!
That would have been my pick from Sweet Charity. Although Big Spender, There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This, and I'm a Brass Band are all fantastic.
I was expecting that one too, although Big Spender belonged on the list too.
Zoro Antonio Banderas and Katherine Zita Jones brought the fire! Makes some of your selections look tasteless, but thanks for trying. I did enjoy the goosebumps from three that you selected.

I think the Hairspray finale deserved to be one of the 20.
I love the red walls in "Dance in the Gym." The whole movie is so beautiful

While there isn't anything I would remove, there are some notable omissions. Step in Time is not the only Dick Van Dyke routine that should be here. Y'all need to give Chitty Chitty Bang Bang a look.

The dance teachers need to be nominated for a Oscar for best dance performance in a movie these dance scenes are awesome and magical
Hay Miss Mojo!!! Weve been watching you guys for years!!! Keep things Epic!!!
what about "Grease"?
All were incredible but don't forget the Swing Dance from Speilberg's 1942 !! It was short but incredible.
