Do you know who played guitar on this song? I tried to Google it & couldn't find anything. Muddy Waters released this song first & of course, played the guitar. The style of the guitarist, on this recording, sounds familiar to me, but I can't place the artist. Thanks.
Hey baby girl that's bill he's got the deep voice!! And that check this out this is the mid-sixties it was Elvis and The righteous Brothers and they gave all the props to black rhythm and blues and spiritual gospel.
This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. Other great songs by them is "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.
Your hearing what they grew up on. Britt your correct. They grew up listening to Little Richard, Ray Charles, BB King. And yes, they were mistaken for being Black because they sang with so much soul in their voices! Their music was labeled, " Blue Eyed Soul and they were proud of that. Love those two! RIP Bobby Hatfield! And keep on singing Bill Medley!!
The Righteous Brothers are not brothers. They are Bill Medley, the baritone (singing this song) and Bobby Hatfield, the tenor who sang "Unchained Melody". Early in their career they struggled with what to call themselves but somebody from the audience yelled, "that was righteous, brother" so they became the Righteous Brothers. My two favorite songs from them are "Soul And Inspiration" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling". You may have heard Bills voice in the theme song to "Dirty Dancing" called "The Time Of My Life" which he sang with Jennifer Warnes.
@@localnetsolutions I knew it was a Marine but did not know where he was stationed at. There are multiple bases in the state of California and a couple near there also. Thanks for the clarification though.
I heard that she is thinking of doing another duet with Bill about a year ago, I haven't heard anything since but I hope it happens. She was someone I knew back in the early 70's.
No, you are confusing them with Buddy Holly being invited to play at the Apollo Theater. They were playing at a club in Santa Ana, Orange County, CA. Black Marines from the El Toro Marine base heard some white guys were singing R & B and decided to check them out. It was the Marines who started calling them righteous brothers during the months they appeared at that club, while they were on stage and off. When they recorded Little Latin Lupe Lu, as a duo, they needed a name to put on the record. They couldn't use The Paramours since it was only the two of them. Bobby suggested they use the name the marines were calling them.
@@1perfectpitch No, it's definitely you. The nightclub was Jon's Black Derby in Bill Medley's hometown of Santa Ana. The rest is as I said in my other comment.
Part of what made these two so great was their differences both physically and musically. Bill (tall and dark bass-baritone ) was a blues singer and Bobby (short and blond first tenor) liked doo wop. They both sang Rhythm and blues with all their heart and soul though and their catalogue includes everything from hard rock to ballads. In the mid sixties they were the hottest group out there … still performing in 2003 when Bobby passed. Bill has continued to sing to sell out venues at the age of 82.
Elvis has great Blues songs too - Mean woman blues, Steamroller Blues, etc. You’d also enjoy Elvis’s gospel side (How great thou art, You gave me a mountain, and with his daughte Where no one stands alone). BB King said Elvis was an excellent blues singer.
These two heartthrobs from the sixties were not biological brothers but rather soul brothers. We were so fortunate they came together. Hence the term: blue eyed soul. Wait till you hear Bobby 'Ken Doll' do his solo Summertime. They each have solos's and numerous duo's that hit the charts: You'll never walk alone, Just once in my life; Soul and Inspiration; Justine and You've lost that loving feeling to name a few.
Willie Dixon wrote this tune and everyone has done a cover of it from Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones to Etta James , just a freaking cool tune but even at my age of 71 and a musician and a Huge Righteous Brothers fan i have never heard their version
That was the other half of the pair BILL MEDLEY both were some of the greatest soul singers of that time , this is self evident by the fact that 50 years later people are still playing it .The other half of the pair is Bobby Hatfield .the name of the pair came from a gig in a club where they were singing and a customer yelled that's righous brother and so the name stuck also Angelina sang this song in concert age 12 , try it ,you'll like it
A really great cover of a Muddy Waters Song. Shout out and Respect to all the AWESOME Blues Musicians who laid the foundation of what would become Rock & Roll.
I remember THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS from my youth, but I had never heard this one before. The group FOGHAT does a nice rock-n-roll version of this song as well! Thanks much! 😊
We saw them at least four times in the seventies in our home town of Chicago! That's what my boyfriend/husband used to sing to me and still does!! Lol!! What a nut!
I never heard this version either. I heard the Etta James version & she sure could belt out those Jazz/Blues songs. I'm so glad that her Son had her sing & record those types of songs. Unfortunately, in the 50s & 60s, some singers were pigeonholed into a certain genre of music & were never really able to show everything they had & could do. Going from "At Last" to "Damn Your Eyes" ("Seven Year Itch" album) was a far stretch that Etta James did flawlessly. RIP- Dear Lady.
According to Bill Medley, [the tall one,] they adopted the name The Righteous Brothers for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine base started calling them "righteous brothers". At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them.
Such a great (and appreciative) reaction to Bill (lower voice) and Bobby (higher voice) - and your Ray Charles reference was spot-on in my opinion!! They brought grit/soul/R&B to their music in so many different ways - Bobby joining Bill in this song is always a show-stopper for me - so "Righteous!!" And I completely agree with ClandOp: you are on the fast trip to 30,000 that I have seen, and deservedly so. Thank you for the very enjoyable reaction!!
For future reference "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers was the most listened-to recording of the 20th century, according to BMI.
Hi Britt, Look at you putting on that "Stank-Face" look so early in the reaction!!! The Righteous Brothers have that affect, they are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and IMHO they have "G.O.A.T. STATUS!!!"

Their music created the term Blue Eyed Soul. Also, because I know you'll react to You've Lost That Loving Feeling, notice at the start of the song they're sitting while hitting the notes and harmonizing. To do it while sitting takes a different kind of talent.

Hey Britt, seeing R&B gets you in the feels, you should check out Beth Hart + Joe Bonamassa - I'd Rather Go Blind. I do believe it will make your playlist. Both these artists have amazing solo careers, but together they are phenomenal.
IF you love the Righteous Brothers' 'Blue-Eyed Soul', you should try another 60's artist, Timi Yuro. She once opened for Frank Sinatra and Elvis came to see her when she played Vegas. Try "Hurt", "What's A Matter, Baby", ""Make the World Go Away", or her cover of Patsy Cline's "She's Got You".
Fun fact. I've heard you reference Dirty Dancing before. The deeper, raspier voice is the Male vocalist in the song at the end of dirty dancing, I've had the time of my life.
You were spot on with Ray Charles comment. Bill Medley does a set of Ray Charles music during his show. More specific Ray Charles soulful version of Hank Williams country classics.
I personally have always found them perfectly delicious, and I grew up with their music. Not brothers, but very close friends. Bobby has passed, the light hair and higher voice. Great amount of their music is available.
This song wasn't played on the radio because the censors thought it was too raunchy.
A prime example of "Blue-Eyed Soul"
