- Using my handy ZOOM Handy Video Recorder I am showing you the difference sounds between the power amp Carvin DCM 150 v.s. the Rocktron Velocity 300 power amp. Both GSPs 1101 have the same exact presets and settings. Sorry about the sloppy playing

we need more p.amp comparisons like this, thanks a lot. helped me heaps bro.
I just purchased a Carvin HT150 for my rig based on this video. I've always had good luck with Carvin since my first FET back in the late 80s. Thanks for posting this video!
Hola Mike, I do also like the Carvin amp much better. Regards!
Do you know anything about the FET 1000?
When you toggle between time markers 3:30 (Carvin ) vs 6:30 (Rocktron) that shows a A/B comparison of the clean+chorus sound the Carvin has a thinner, more sterile sound. The Rocktron has a fullness to the sound that simply sounds better for guitar. The Carvin may be better suited for bass or keyboards.
The Rocktron sounds better. It adds a "tubey" definition to it. Same reason I love the TubeWorks Mosvalve 962 for powering my GSP1101. They're getting rare though so I'm stocking up on backups.
Thank you for your time. They both sound great. I think I perfer the Rocktron. A little more like a tube amp.
I'm in the market for a power amp.
The Velocity sounds natural but absolutely nothing wrong with the Carvin.
Thanks dude
Rocktron easily, but I the Carvin has that BBE maximizer too which always make ghindgs sound very bright. Hard to even declare a winner with separate rack contents.
I have my eye on a Carvin FET 1000 for my guitar rig but idk if it would work.
Thanks for the demo! i listened twice". I think the Velocity sounds more full and musical like tubes. The carvin sounded ok,but can still hear the sterile stiffness and unmusical tone quality. Most amps can"SOUND" good, but how do they "FEEL"? thats what I look for in an amplifier. "Musical tone and Warm feel". I would chose the Rocktron over the carvin. Maybe not try to match sound of both amps, but instead set each to their own best sound qualities for back 2 back performance comparison
You can disable the mid scoop with the EQ expand button on the front. It dips around 1kHz -4dB.
You can program the effects processor to adjust to whatever amplifier you are using. I like the Carvin because it is clean, and uncolorized. So have more control on how you want to sound like.
The Carvin's "Expand" switch was on, correct? I thought it lacked some midrange, but that switch being engaged may have been removing what I found lacking.
great demo! The rocktron sounds A LOT better but what do you think about the Carvin TS100? do you think it might be better than the rocktron? I know it costs more but that doesnt always mean it's better.
well done mister
Great presentation. I personally did not like Roctron for its sound coloration, Carvin sounded nicer to my ears. Other then that, your racks did not shake the room the way Rectifier or Engel would.
tell ya right now the 362 is by far a better maximizer so there is that and prolly why it has more shimmer, more robust, both work IMHO but I like the rocktron more, try swapping maximizers see if that does it? really like to hear the 362 swapped over, might get one for my digi 1101?
Man i think power amps are just like speakers they all have their own sort of sound and flavor to em. I think they both sound really good if anything the carvin seem to have a better fuller bottom end. Ive wondered that about "guitar amps" vs Amps designed for say DJ where you want lots of thump the carvin sounded like it would handle alot lower low end tones then the Rocktron but the Rocktron might be setup better for guitar frequencies?
thank you but what size of amp do i require to buy my speakers can handle 250 watts per side at 8 ohms regards Stephen Happy new year
Stephen Fell,
Either amp would work for you.
Regards,
Mauricio.
is crown xls series power amps good for guitar?or just for p.a systems?
Any power amp designed for PA's is going to just be transparent. That's not a bad thing necessarily, especially with a modeling preamp which is already simulating the power tube section, but you have make sure you have enough headroom so that your solid-state power amp is not clipping but just clearly amplifying the modeled sound. I prefer the MV-962 for power, because it gives some of the volume, definition and warmth of tube power without compressing and altering the modeled tone too much.
A good example is an ZOOM 9150 DSP preamp I owned. At first I was imediately impressed with the tone quality and seemingly endless tone shaping options. And the PUNCH of that 9150 is "TERRIFYING"! But after a while of playing I grew to dislike the sterile feel that came to be.It might sound good through an pa and processing for recording, but for a "REAL" amp feel? it came up short in the end.For all Fairness, I never did play it through an all tube power amp?.Tube sag"?
Drive sound Carvin3:45 , Rocktron 6:50
Preset 1: 3:45 6:50
Preset 2: 4:12 7:16
Preset 3: 4:44 7:52
dumb question why didnt you just run a midi cable out of one preamp and into the other then you wouldnt have had to unplug ethernet cables?
Carvin.
hmm I have used both of these poweramps and I like the Rocktron better, it sounds very similar to my Marshall 9100 stereo tube power amp.. if you set the reactance full on and set the definition about half way,
I am using it with a tube preamp though (ADA MP1 Classic) so maybe the Rocktron is just well suited to my preamp?, I sold the Carvin and kept the Rocktron which is now my backup power amp if my Marshall 9100 goes down,
I use a closed back Orange 2x12 with V30s
velocity by a mile. Way more tube flavor and not as compressed. You NEED the mids. Guitar is a midrange instrument
Rocktron sounds much better.
Carvin no contest. Rocktron sounds muffled. There are ways to be middy and punch this sounds just less transaparent vs the carvin.
