I love your videos on all your projects. Neat you get your son to assist too. He is learning alot and spending time with you.
I just scratch my head watching you dive into these fix me up or go broke challenges.
Keep Flying High.

I'm really enjoying your project Jimmy. Pastor Jimmy may have gotten me in the door but you have definitely kept me looking for more. I feel invested at this point!
thanks so much!
Worth watching just for the packaging (suspended in air). Genius.
really enjoy all of the videos and keeps me sane during the pandemic, add the word aviation and the cost goes up, same here add the word Marine cost spirals
I usually buy what I really don't need, but you have a spare. And if you hadn't bought it, you would have probably needed one. Nice to know there are others in this world who have the same luck I do. Stay safe!
Ahhh, Piper Warrior. I must have painted a few hundred of them in my lifetime. Great little aircraft!
most entertaining vids on you tube
Just found your channel and subbed due to great content but wow that was expensive for a little piece of aluminium channel and a few rivets .
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, entertaining as well as educational. I don't have a pilots license but still enjoy. Just out of curiosity if you don't mind, what is your background that you know sooooo much stuff.
Thanks, I'll keep watching
that's dangerous calling any of this educational... lol
background: I've taken lots of stuff apart in the past and some of it went back together and even worked sometimes! It's a thirst for learning and curiosity. and learning...and learning.
Almost every time I "Can See the Light" it ends up being a train. Great project.
Haha the light is pretty dim, not gonna lie... it’s still an interesting project
You got that right!
is that a dim witted joke....lol
@@therealjimmysworld that joke didn’t bring much light 🤣🤣🤣😂
Your videos are way better!
That metal goes on the inside of your seal, it keeps the seal soft in inflated, that way the air cannot go underneath and inflate their door and blow it off. We had to do the same thing to A-10s when I was in Air Force
Aviation never fails to try its best to make you bankrupt haha.
yes it does...
You say "interwebs" like I do!!!
Ref: cargo door, buy a can of vette bond, clean the area with a wire brush in a drill motor, wipe down area with Muratic acid allow to dry. Apply vette bond ,clamp with paint sticks and vise grip’s. Overnight.
good idea
A suggestion for you is get list of suspected AD's that you think are not incorporated. Get ahold of QAI have them look at the AD's and inspect whether they are done or not. This should save you from 150$ mistakes like this. Granted you gonna have spend some ducket's for the QAI's time, but it will give you a piece of mind.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check them out.
DUCT TAPE I keep saying. Wonder how good that $400 rubber gasket is after 10 years on the shelf.
lol, good call
Well you now have a receipt for the part for the door, and log it. In the book 📕.
Sat here watching your vlogs and let me tell you they are good but not long enough O I know that what she said lol. What’s your background jimmy ? Cheers
hahahaha, thanks! I've got quite the variety background. I'm trying acting and film making now... how's it going? Should I go back to the other stuff? hahahaha
The reason they still had it was because once owners realized the simple fix they probably spent less than $10 on aluminum trim and some pop rivets! If you think this doesn't happen in the certificated world your wrong...
Oh, I bet it does. I've heard loads of stories and I've already seen quite a bit that makes me shake my head...even as a newb.
Hey!!! SoCalMonkey needs one!!!! Call him !!!
Does he really? I'll contact him.
Homebuilders have a saying; "80% done, 80% to go"...
ahahaha!!! That is soooo true!!!!
much better than a 400 dollar part, 150 dollars is the winner!
SUPER STUPID question, here: Since there's always a compass in an airplane, what purpose does that directional gyro serve?
Huge, informal aviation nut asking this - but some answers slip through the cracks.
1 question, what is a A D ? thanks
Brother in law had a lance that had that problem fixed it with fibergalass resin.
yep, that's more or less the recommended repair.
JIMMY, you got ripped off!
Maybe you could get an Elastic Netting just in case that door does open in flight. With hooks at the top and bottom to secure the netting so most items stay inside the aircraft.
I was thinking the same thing. But, those doors are pretty solid, so just follow the check list and keep it locked. Saratoga's apparently will crash if the forward door pops open. That would be a bad day.
@@kevinjarchow8812 Just an extra safety precaution. Just in case.
That's a good idea. I would like that just to keep things from sliding around anyways.
After watching SoCal's I'm hyper vigilant about that door.
an ounce of precaution can save a pound of repair...or in this case a large, fiery, scene of destruction.
What are your thoughts about putting the baggage door AD beading on the bottom - if the right side is already completed?
Also, there is a little gap above your PSE audio panel - if you desired, are you able to move it up all the way to the top or is it as high as it goes? I am wondering about total stack height.
I had that same thought- wondering if it would help hold that door closed.
I thought about that too, however, the instructions don't specify that and this being a certified plane, I'm not allowed to make those repairs as they are outside the scope of the service manual.... Even though it's a way better repair... (experimental sounds better everyday...)
Audio panel: can't move it up. It hits the glareshield in the back. I'm making a small plate to cover that gap.
it would, but I can't....
I told you before that the only guy who never got laid off from Piper was the one who raised parts prices.
He's putting in overtime!
Hey, what was the company that you got your harnesses from?
Approach Fast Stack, great purchase!
It's curious that you are replacing an analog DG with another analog DG. The new stuff that is out from uAvionix would allow you to replace both the DG and the AI with digital units for about $2000 each. The company will be compliant with most legacy autopilots soon too. The value of that is that you can completely eliminate the vacuum system, which will pay for the digital units within about four years.
Yes, I seriously considered it. And that is on the list....However, I'm saving all my pennies to see what happens during the first 100 hours of this thing flying. I know there will be several gremlins that show themselves after a little time is put on it.
@@therealjimmysworld I think you made the right choice.. You can't use the uAvionix with an IFR GPS currently, kinda makes it useless for any serious flying.
Yeah, that's right, I forgot about the IFR limitations as well.
You can thank all the lawyers for these outrageous prices
Jimmy good morning. Gongrats for the videos! I enjoy each and every one of them. One question. Do I remember corectly that you istalled some kind of better than the original mags? Can you point me to that video if my memmory servs me right? Again big congrats!!!
Thanks! and yes I did. Surefly www.surefly.aero and here's the video: ruclips.net/video/EDGjSzoy_1g/видео.html
Likely they include a piece of aluminum that is of sufficient length to do the leading edge, trailing edge or bottom edge. What about using that piece for the bottom edge of the door ??
leading edge only according to instructions... lame...
The pricing with aviation parts always opens eyeballs, lol. Beyond the certification of the parts, the other big factors in price is time it takes for development and production from specifically correct material, and number sold/number demand for production to recover cost plus a sustainable margin of profit. Very often the sustainable margin of profit to be able to just cover the break even can be MANY times the raw material cost to produce the part. Very often it’s the requirements in mandatory details that drives the price up so dang high. But, safety in aviation parts quality is top priority. Can’t just pull over when you discover the quality of the part is junk. 😵
Are you still doing roofs in Colorado?
no, sold that company in 2019. Wish I didn't now :/. I need it to pay for this plane!
Wouldn’t the installation of the AD fix hav been logged?
What is that funky looking gauge directly to the left of the gauge you just installed @ 11:06.
the turn coordinator?
11:06? at the very end of the video?
@@therealjimmysworld sorry about that, 8:25
gotcha, and yes GreenSphinx is correct. It's the slip skid/turn coordinator
G, day Jimmy from Sydney, Australia
While you can see the light: let me just move the lantern....
* panel screw heads holding avionics: how about a touch of black enamel paint on each head?
*the rubber engine cooling compartment (orange rubber).
Mike Bushe from Savvy states good fitting up to the cowling is vital for air flow cooling.
1. Silicon spray and clean rubber
2. Caulk top edge and see if it leaves a print on the underside of cowling?
* do you know if the prop has the correct pitch?
🌏🇭🇲
Hello John! always good questions/tips! Thank you.
- a dab of paint is a good call
- engine cooling: will be tackled when we put cowl back on
- no idea about the pitch, it's very new and from a reputable prop shop. Met all the ground run specs and flew well. How would I be able to measure the pitch?
@@therealjimmysworld G,day Jimmy: you can purchase a metal gauge with pitch increments.
Another option, is the manufactures specifications of the prop.
I'll have to look into that.
This is not really a comment on this video, but I’m looking for a Cherokee Six and was hoping COVID was going to push prices on airplanes lower, but nope, prices on airplanes of all makes and models have gotten even crazier than they already were.
Was that AD not logged?
anything done before 1993 was lost. They did have a list of AD's that were done, and this one was on there, but the language in the AD did not mention anything about the leading edge, only lamination issues. It's a reoccurring AD inspection. So, this one had delamination which was to be addressed by this Service Bulletin, which I couldn't get any info on anywhere. I should have asked the guy to send me the instructions and that would have told me in 2 min.... next time...
Look at the bright side... You didn't spend $400 on it.
hahaha, my thoughts
hahahaha, that's exactly what I was thinking when I realized that... hahaha
hahaha
Silicon rubber seal next time , it will last forever or shower door rubber seal
that's a good idea.
Sell it to SoCalFlyingMonkeys if you don't need it.
I should ask him! lol
We are in the wrong business, or the wrong end of the business
I feel like I'm on the wrong end of something... lol
Whaddid happen was .... 😂
Been there...and it sucked. My error was for a car, not near as expensive.
just add a zero...
Hate to sound naïve, but isn't it mandated by the FARs that ADs that have been complied with get documented in the appropriate logs?
After the Hurricane all the logs were lost. So it might have been done before that.
@@gorgly123 With lost log book its imperative that an IA does a detailed inspection visually inspecting what AD's have been complied with by part number serial number installed. If it can not be verified....then It has to be CW. I bought a 172 with no airframe logs, I physically had to inspect and verify what AD's had been CW. The ones that I could not with certainty identify it had been done, I did the AD. Very time consuming, but when you buy an aircraft with missing logs this has to be done to be signed off legally for an annual.
yep, that's why I'm going over every single one of them. And each AD has specifics on when the AD has to be complied with and if it ever needs to be complied with.
yep, It appears that way.
@@ronstowell8646 I know that. I was responding to the poster asking why it wasn’t in the logbooks. If it isn’t documented it didn’t happen.
Hell I'd sell that all day long for $150 for about $15 worth of material if that even
Ship the part back, and the guy says that’s what the last idiot did. Listed on eBay first for $300
that's a good idea
It's only money, your wife will make more.
hahaha, true!
Just put the word AIRPLANE or BOAT in front of it and the price quadruples. You gotta pay to play.....
for real! it's only a zero...
Aircraft Parts are insanely priced and it seems they are more about Driving people out of Flying. This has nothing to do with safety. Epoxy would fix the delam just fine and permanently.
No commercials? I would have watched them all the way through to help you fund this. More realistically I would have gone to the toilet as I let them play out, either way you still get paid the same.
wait...I get paid?! How does that work???
Reason #1 i got out of aviation: everything is 10x too expensive.
Hold my beer. I’m gonna run to the dollar store and grab some super glue and duct tape. I’ll be back in a jiffy!
Just send the item back to them and request your money back, $150. That's the simple way.
curious as to why you’re putting rusty screws back in the panel? Screws can’t be that expensive. And when you go to sell would make me look for a different plane. Ignoring small details like that just seem to make me shake my head.
There is a bezel that covers those ugly screws. When you buy the plane, you won't know they are there.
Yes, there is a plastic bezel that will cover all that.
I'm not doing a full nut & bolt restoration. I'm trying to get this bird in the air!
Like I tell the young guy in the shop, we are making it airworthy, we are not restoring it. Some owners can't afford to keep the cosmetics perfect.
Very true. If I were doing a full resto, this would be a multi year project, not a few months. and add another $75,000
I think the prices are so high because of all the government red tape.
Insurance companies and tort law. Wikipedia liability insurance crisis 1984 to 1987. This crisis was CAUSED by insurance companies colluding. Aviation never recovered. Never will recover
It would be a 1000 dollars if it was a boat
Why are aircraft things so expensive? It doesnt make sense how pricey alot the parts and repairs are...no wonder nobody can just just jump into aviation on a budget. You wont make it unless you are rich..insane
I am starting to think that James is serious about flying in this home made Phoenix scrapyard build. Will someone please send him a box to open with a ballistic parachute kit inside... 🙄
That would be a great addition. Just make sure it's STC'd for this plane... ;)
Aviation is so so darn expensive/? But, so is having that more expensive wife... Thats why im happily single ///???
Let’s go Brandon!😎
That’s a ripoff even at $150
Sounds like a Democrat, keeping feeding it money
How much does it cost to have aviation as a hobby? How much have you got?
@@kevinjarchow8812 A LOT of money.
hahaha, don't worry, they'll just print more...
hahahaha, yep. How fast do you want to go? How much money do you have? lol
more money than I can afford...perfect!
