Id recommend trying for jobs at universities or governments. Overall, I think those organisations, obviously pay less than Spotify, will offer a better work life balance.
Julia, I bet that some people would trade places with you a Spotify if they knew how much you were making, but only you knew how the stress affected you, and you are very courageous for doing what you did, which is to choose Julia over that stress and that paycheck!
You know what like i am just going to finish my high school and In Sha Allah will land in an institute for my bs in data science. i can't like describe in words how much anxious you made me at some point of this video i was like is this the right carrer for me..., but then the ending and after you talked about your grand father (may his soul rest at peace), you said like in life we move with so many ups and downs, ones life is so unexpected and you said you are grateful for all of this, all that made me to learn so much. Don't skip this comment and let me save you 10-15 years of frustration and possible regret. Try to avoid replacing your current job with the same job at a different company. Happiness will come from pursuing passions, and that rarely exists in a corporate/zoom environment. You'll end up in the same place and feel like you've wasted years. Don't get infatuated with brands, companies, or the tech industry. Companies are just a group of people, that's it. And in the tech industry, it's basically the same people and thinking at every company. Especially if it's a public company. What frustrated you at Spotify will be the same frustration somewhere else. I get this will be hard to do, and you'll probably have to go through it yourself to really understand. But if you have the courage and you're willing do it now, I beg you to find what you really love to do, then find a way to make a living at it. The sooner the better.

Yes! Just quit my job last week too and had the same realization as you. Some people aren't just cut out for a 9-5 and I'm one of those people. Few days in and I can already tell it isn't for me and quit in 4 months. The future is so dark just me being in that company. I've never worked for more than 6 months in a job and quitting in just 4 months would definitely hurt my resume and potentiality for future employment.
What you said is easier than done now that I'm in the same situation. No ideas for business, talents to share, and stuff like that. This sht is hard man.
But I'm funny, at least. I like making other people laugh lol. Not born serious for this world haha
Yeah but what if you don't have a monetizable passion? I like watching planets through a telescope, I like having sex and I like doing nothing. Hard to monetize that lol, so hard work it is.

Find a way to share it be it a yt channel, blog, article etc. You never know -- people may find it interesting. The more unique -- the better. That's what people are looking for. And that's also your selling point.
I'm a 37 year old female in tech. Ive worked in this industry since I was 19. I have been laid off once early on in my career and I also left a job without another one lined up. Both times, things worked out. Two things helped me a lot, financial security and strong interview skills. Work your network, ask for referrals, do mock interviews with people who are in the fields that you want to go into. Most importantly, take care of yourself. Life isn't as scary as people think it is.
Hello! What are mock interviews? Do you mean getting referrals as in collecting some letter-reviews of your work to add to CV during applications or contacting ex managers when you’re actually asked for a referral?

mock interviews is like practicing your interview skills by having a friend or stranger "interview" you. Theres websites out there where u can mock interview with strangers.

Referrals in this context mean getting someone to recommend you for an open position at their company. Usually, companies will reward a current employee with a bonus/extra money if the person they refer gets hired.

Why do these pioneers exploit people, taking away their time for other things in life, only for some more profit?

After the corporate massive layoffs, I have defaulted on debts, my savings are lying waste to inflation and my portfolio losing gains everyday. It’s all leading to financial exhaustions and depression. These days I have contributed more in learning how to make extra interest on the side, Using my job to finance my goals, You can't be an employee forever!
ensure you add value to your life first not always to your employer, everyone is replaceable. I am always making sure of this to ensure my own sanity and future security.
Our way of life needs better alternative, but at the same time, people also need to be more responsible. I know for a fact that there's a lot of people that simply don't make enough, I make roughly hundred plus a year and in California, rent inflation alone eat up almost all of what I make, with dependents and other obligations included, it's easy to end up with zero.
Big ups to everyone working effortlessly trying to earn a living while building wealth even after the massive layoffs. My wife and I we are both retired with over $2 million in net worth and all paid off debts. living smart and frugal with our money, made it possible for us this early, even till now we earn passively with our asset coach.
Adapt to a lifestyle, be thrifty, set a budget, save money and build more streams.
Impressive Joe Robert! having a great savings and more streams to earn makes life goal’s easier, I make most stock purchases when the market is in a confirmed uptrend or cheap cost, although most stocks I bought months ago which showed strong signs of doing well has greatly underperformed. It’s okay for me on the long run, however it’s a good time to add to existing holdings at follow -on opportunities.
Fine steps! you could also take advantage of some growth stocks at the moment, every pro is currently bagging some digital dips. For me, my coach Frost hilda my advisor has been using every opportunity to ensure I benefit, well positioned as I’m also privy to improve.
I think it's good that our generation are thinking more and more about fulfilment in life and not just going along with the mindset of keep hustling and you will be happy.
It's not that you won't have to work hard or their won't be ups and downs. More so that you recognise when those downs are and trying to improve them, rather than 'sticking it out' and just brute forcing a miserable situation until you (hopefully) see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Elder millennial here. This might be a surprise, but every generation wanted fulfillment and to change the world. We had big dreams too. So did those before us.
Enjoy this time of unbridled optimism. Try to leverage it into something good for yourself. It's tough out there.
It's great to think of fulfilment. But most of us need an income too.
Yeah..and I think previous generations cannot afford to lose what they currently have...especially when they have kids and family to feed. Younger generations are now starting family later that the older ones.
Leaving a dream job takes courage, but prioritizing your mental health is crucial.

My husband went though a similar situation as yours in the tech world and also got insomnia because of crazy hours. He is now doing something completely different. Fyi I watch you for YOU, as a person , as Julia. Not because you were working as a data scientist. Look forward to seeing what you do next and thanks for bringing us along the way! Went from being a veteran to, software engineering for 10 years, just got into law enforcement and hoping to become one of the good police officers out there to help people.
It's okay to crush your own ego and be reborn into a new person. It is the cycle of having a healthy life by inviting change.

@@redesignedlife777 I start the academy next week. I miss the brotherhood and camaraderie the Army once gave me. People next to you that are willing to die for you. Law enforcement is the next best thing filled with veterans.
I was making 300k/yr, and dropped it for a 120k job, law enforcment pension will come later but I am content with my decision.
I took 8 months to think about my fulfillment and I for the life of me could not adjust to classroom / cubicle / environments. 10 Years of being in the cubicle was enough for me to make that decision confidently.
I am definitely a people person and love to work and help with real people's problems. Not making the pockets of corporate America richer.
It's not about how much you make with your salary, it's about what you can do with that money on the side (i.e. building businesses, amazon e-commerce, real estate, etc). And for the love of god do not fall into lifestyle creep, I made that mistake before.
When you see signs of yourself burning out, it's okay listen to your spirit, to step away for a while and try something new. You can always come back if you want later in life.

And it's not about how much you get paid with salary half the time, it's about what you do on the side with your money and being smart with it, (investing in real estate, businesses, amazon e-commerce FBA, etc.) and for the love of God do not fall for lifestyle creeping, I made that mistake.
If you feel your spirit is broken and burnt out, telling you to leave or take a break, listen to it. Make a change. You can always come back if you need to.

The size of your salary does not matter. There’s too many ego driven maniacs as cops. On top of that, people don’t like being told what to do and you’re going to be doing a lot of that. Then you risk getting shot in the face. If you’re a software engineer, you scale your money to help provide bigger means to help people. C’mon dude.

I have never commented on your channel before but I wanted to tell you that you have all our support in whatever you decide to do and I wish you the very best of luck in finding your next dream job! I have experienced a similar situation before and was feeling extremely stressed and burnt out in my previous job. I was working long hours and I felt like I was not going up the career ladder as I hoped. I felt sad and stuck almost every day... I spent a few months job searching and although it could get disappointing at times, I have learnt a lot about myself and understanding what I truly aspire to in life. I ended up finding my current job and I am so grateful to have landed in this position. Like you said, there will be highs and lows in our lives, but trust the process and I am sure the next high of your life is waiting for you! Good luck!!

i may have first clicked on a video of yours because you were at data scientist at spotify and i just so happened to be interested in data science at the time, but i subscribed because of the warmth that shines through in your videos through conversations you have with your friends and family, the introspective thoughts and emotions you're feeling that you're so graciously willing to share with us, and your courage to be vulnerable about topics that are difficult to talk about and discuss (let alone with people you haven't met before). you are infinitely more interesting than whatever occupation you could possibly have; a job's like a hat you wear for a season, and it's simply time to wear a different one as you transition into the next. you are doing so well, and i have no doubt exciting things await you in this next chapter in your life. thank you for your courage.
You've got such a measured take on your situation and life. It's sad how the reality of dream tech jobs often falls short... Burnout (and now, unfortunately layoffs) is common in this industry. I'm amazed you're immediately going back to the job search. Years ago, I too quit my job at the peak of burnout, and I can say it was one of the best decisions I made.
Life is indeed short, but also long... Do take some time to enjoy funemployment too (it's also a luxury to have both savings + free time as an adult without worrying about career responsibilities)... take care! It sounds like you're confident about the next steps ahead, and I think you'll go far 💖

I found your channel back in 2021 just as I was getting into tech (and got my first job as a data analyst) and I’ve followed along ever since. You’ve helped a lot not just career-wise but just with navigating through life in general. We’re close in age and it always seemed like your videos came in at just the right point to kind of give me some respite and support in my own life and I think a lot of that is due to how transparent and honest you’ve always been in your videos. You don’t churn these out but instead have always given an insight into where you’re currently at, which I think is very brave of you.
Best of luck moving forward. Remember: You’re supposed to step out of your comfort zone, which oddly enough I think is something you’ve always conveyed.

You're so brave! I also quitted my job in Korea last year and moved to a different country to be with my partner. It was really hard for me being a student again, learning other language and culture, always feeling like I lost my career & money😂 But I knew the problem was.. I was not happy at all when I had a career even tho it had a good title to others. Now I'm focusing on important values in my life and figuring out what I should study to have a better / happier position next time. I too quit my job without a backup plan for the same reasons as yours. I learned that this is a blessing in disguise. Trust the process! You will be alright at the end!!

Hey, it’s very important to take your time. It’s okay to take your mind off your career. This happened to me before. Took 6 months of rest, just being unemployed, binge watching movies, travel, spending time my family, dogs, etc. Helped me a lot to bounce back even better in my career and got a job that pays 3x than my previous and has waaay better working conditions.
I commented on your IG that i was so proud of you and I want to repeat that here but ALSO I don't watch your videos because of your job. Maybe that was how it started but now I watch you for YOU. Your videos are a comfort to so many and I cannot wait to see where your journey takes you!!

This video came at the exact right time for me. I got laid off, no back up plans, my cat died, I also felt burn out at work and looking forward to change my career. When I was thinking to start something new, before I was ready, I got this layoff call from my boss. I totally agree on this "take 1 step back to make 2 steps forward", sometimes the universe would just push us so we can take the leap.
i also got laid off the same week my cat passed away. still looking for my next job, but it put a lot into perspective for me. i realized i wasn't super passionate about the work i was doing anyway. the important things in life have become clearer to me now.

Life is all about finding what makes your "heart, mind, and soul" happy - I have sacrificed higher positions (which come with more $$, more work, more stress, less work-life balance, and politics) ...and I have never regretted it.

This is brave and absolutely the right thing. I am 42 and you are so right about life's trajectory. You got THE job really early in life where most people in their 20s are figuring things out for years and years. You will have many paths and many jobs and that skill set will always be there for you. No job is worth sacrificing your mental health and personal life. You are smart and young and will do so many amazing things. Good for you for figuring out your priorities. I wish I'd done so that early on.

Ok, to anyone in their 20’s watching this, DO NOT QUIT your job without something else lined up unless you have a trust fund. The tech job market, ESPECIALLY for data scientists, is BRUTAL right now and it will easily take 6-12 months to find another job. And in NYC, your savings will drain FAST.

I left my first job out of college as a programmer after 3 months due to the poor work culture. I didn’t have a job lined up and it was scary at first, but I left work that day feeling happier and more relieved than any other day I had been there. One thing I’ll suggest, be sure to network as much as possible during this time. It’s much easier to land a good job if you know who you’ll be working with.
This video was recommended to out of no where and felt the need to comment. I'm currently working as a data scientist in NYC and everything you said resonates so deeply with me. The main difference is I recognize I'm burnt out or very close to it, but I'm living/working through it by ignoring it. Absolute major props to you for having the courage to take on this life-changing risk to better your overall mental and physical health. I pray that one day, I find similar strength, but right now, I'll be at work tomorrow 8am sharp.

Happy for you! I've seen your vlogs for a while now and you just looked very put together with your priorities in life. It was saddening to see you look frustrated in your vlogs while trying to put on a smiling face. Wow, thinking of mortality does put things into perspective and let us see things more clearly, above our individualistic mindsets, even if everybody else doesn't agree with us at that moment.

I’d love to quit my job, but I can’t because it pays the bills. Most days I hate it. It isn’t that I hate the work. I actually like my job, but there’s one person I particular that I HATE to work with. Drama queen and just makes work horrible. I wish I could get away from that person, but for now I’m stuck. I really just try to ignore and avoid, but it’s really hard when we are in the same department. Only 10 years left. I hope she quits before then. Lol

To be the contrarian, it was a bad decision. Now you’ve lost your income stream without a next step or backup. Couldn’t you asked to do less work? That would’ve bought you some time. Also you put your old team/project in a bind to replace you with only 2 or so weeks. I’m sure things will work out for you in the end, just pointing out that you could’ve built a better plan that would’ve worked out even better. Good luck to you, burn out is real and definitely tough to get through as most tech workers know.

Stumbled upon your vid. I was there too. I quit my first job where I had been working over 3yrs, with no backup plans as similar reason as you. I remember I was so fearful and happy at the same time. Looking back now, I can definately say that was the best decision ever. I wish I had more courage to decide it more sooner. I am sure you’ll be thankful to yourself later for making this brave decision to prioritize yourself.

There's just so much that life has to offer and so much for you to offer, that if you're unhappy, you don't have to settle.
I quit my job 8 years ago with no job lined up and I'm much better off now. My sister quit tech in nyc 2 years ago and went traveling around Asia for a whole year, now she's got a remote tech job and relaxing on a beach in Brazil. We still feel stress comparing our relationships and money issues to our peers, but the key is to just keep moving forward.
Now I"m going to step back and keep watching your videos on how to improve my life further hah!

thanks for posting such a video. I also went through the same thing last year as a web developer. Went through 2 months and a half of unpaid holidays to take care of myself, bear with the job for 6 more months and then felt shit again and the company betrayed me by verbally accepting me going on holiday and firing me while I was on holiday.
I can not describe how tough it was to go through so many unending interviews and being rejected but finally I found a new job and it's going to start soon.
Believe in the process and never give up.

Im so glad I clicked on this video. I just quit my job today and doing so, caused quite the anxiety and some doubts. Hearing your experience is very validating in knowing that we dont have to keep running in this rat race when our health and happiness is on the line. This grind mentality of society is very harmful and unhealthy. It’s very much okay to step back and reassess. I think the more that we can let go of things that clearly arent for us, the more we are able to be open to what is. With that, I salute you as well for being kind to yourself as you try to navigate this new chapter in your life. Your mindset is very positive and I hope that continues! I don’t usually comment on a lot of videos, but I wanna say hearing you talk about your experience was so interesting, I can relate to a lot of what you are saying and especially the part about your grandpa having lived many different lives in other peoples eyes was beautiful. - because I really struggle with image myself and it’s nice to hear that even though he had multiple images of him that is just part of personal development. People change over time.
Hey, Julia, I can feel you deeply since I was in the same position back in the COVID season, I lost my beloved grandma while struggling with long working hours with rare visibility. The best I have done is to come back hometown, gather with my family, and coincidentally meet my fiancee, and finally land my dream job as well!! So when you are uncertain about where your life is going, just take a deep breath, and life will guide you instead as long as you never lose the confidence of life!

When you said "Life is short, but also, life is long" and spoke about your grandfather's storied life, including how others met him at all sorts of points along his journey, I almost teared up. I met my own grandfather recently on a trip and had it in the back of my mind that the meeting very well could be the last.
It's so wonderful you were able to connect to the community of his friends during your break, however sad the circumstances of that may have been. It's in times like these that the complexity of the universe stuns one into re-imagining everything.
