Could this first ever electric hot hatch offering from Geely take EVs to the next level? We sent Elliot to test drive a pre-production model to see if it lives up to the hype.
You don't need to look further than the large tyres to see that the (formerly known as Lynk and Co., now) ZEEKR 001 has been designed to be a performance car, but it's also pretty practical and could work for a family. It has nifty features, an impressive range, rapid charging and, with the strength and might of Geely behind it, this compelling EV looks destined for success.

Hi - i was wondering if you could do a review of the wuling hongguang mini ev please - as they have now announced it possibly coming to the UK - obviously with higher price tag - probably 8-10k? i am really interest to see that cause i think what we need is more affordable EV's rather than these 20k+ ones we have currently - i think there is a real opportunity here - people want to adopt EV's but i think the biggest barrier is price - all large manufacturers seem to be producing really good "BUT EXPENSIVE" EV's. If we can get a sub 10k EV's - don't necessarily need all the bells and whistles - just 150 mile plus range and decent specs & build quality - that is what will push it over the edge in my opinion. But yeah a £3-5k EV i would buy this in a heartbeat as my next car if it was availaible at this price - really interested to get your opinion on this, what do you think? Thank you

If they put it on sale for £35,000 lots of legacy makers ev's like the ionic 5 start to look more attractive. If they pitch the price right, this should sell outside China.

So, I Live in china and ive recently bought a new house outside of the big city so i need a car. Wife and I decided to get an EV. We started by looking at the tesla...man what a crap-simplistic interior and mediocre exterior (great tech though), Moved on to the Voyah I-free, then the Nio, then the Li One, Then the Xpeng, Then I found the Ford Mustang Mach E. I owned a mustang back in america and this EV really called to me, we decided to buy the mustang next month...then on the way out we walked past a small store selling a ZeekR and man did it catch my eye. Its the first one i called "sexy" and the interior was so much nicer than the others. I love flashy lights (LEDs) im simple like that and Zeekr had some super nice LED accents on the interior that made it stand out without looking trashy. The interior styling was luxury and Techy..I loved it. Going for a test drive tomorrow. I have a feeling im going to forget all about the mustang Mach E.

Elliott its always a pleasure to have you on, I find that your reviews are how a normal person would tackle it, which I enjoy. The car, looks like a lowered SUV that's Mercedes E class sized. Positives are decent sized boot space, nice cockpit layout and sports seating. 700km range but I expect it'll be less. I like the design language the brand has adopted. The negative, I don't like electric doors- a waste of precious weight and unnecessary energy consumption, plus another thing to maintain or break. Like most other EVs, all it needs is just cruise control, sat navigation, a few helpful apps heated seats and aircon, everything else is a drain on the battery and the pleasure of driving manually.

I like it - and I think they seem to understand that any performance EV will need fast charging if it's to do track days, though I doubt that 120KM range in 5 mins is 120km at track pace (if the can have good linear brake feel with strong regen then that will help a lot). There's no doubt EVs can do one or two fast laps, but I haven't seen much serious discussion about a performance EV that could do a full track day - which in an ICE car would generally start around 10 AM after a safety briefing, warm up lap, 3-5 full tilt laps, cooldown lap, come in to let the car cool down for 10-15 minutes, repeat until lunchtime, stop for lunch for an hour, repeat all afternoon tl about 4:30. I'd be really interested to see if someone will crack this - without unduly shortening the battery lifespan either, so would love to see you revisit this or a similar car later for this sort of test.
I think what's generally missed in the conversation about performance EVs is raw numbers aren't going to win over people who want proper drivers cars. 0-60 in 2 seconds, nice party trick, but who cares outside top trumps. It's not how fast you go, it's how you go fast. Some of the most fun cars are relatively slow - what we care about is 1) is it fun! (good steering feedback, you can easily adjust it's angle mid corner, etc.) and 2) can I hoon it all day without breaking it or cutting my day short because I've used all the electrons.

To all that are saying that it's too up scale, too much range, too big, etc. I think they're trying to follow the Telsa model. Announce a big splash product to get a bunch of attention and prove that they can make a highly desirable performance vehicle. Then they'll go down market with the hype they get from this car to help boost the brand image. Hopefully that next product will be a good one for the masses.

Yeah the comment about 21" wheels being 'performance' made me chuckle... and I'm not sure what defines a 'hot hatch' for an EV - ICE vehicles typically trade off economy etc for responsiveness and power - but EVs get both those in spades by default, so is it just suspension tuning? 'sporty style'? ability to switch off various assists?

I'd be interested in seeing how the "base" version drives. It would be RWD with a smaller battery so might be well under 2 tons in weight, perhaps 400 kg lighter? That might be the most fun to drive version. Maybe they could make a stripped ultra light version as well. They own Lotus after all, just have them tune one for low weight.

This is a good looking car with a hatchback and supposed performance - but it's 5cm less than 5 metres long... that's a foot longer than a Porsche Macan (which I think it bears a resemblance to), and more than 2 foot longer than a VW ID3. But what will it actually do in the real world? Geely own Polestar and claim a WLTP of 470 km/292 miles for the Polestar 2 but it cannot actually come close to that.
Real world range for the Polestar 2 is about 260 km/160 miles on a 5°C day and maybe 350 km/220 miles in Summer at a speed of 113 kph/70 mph.
That probably represents a 17% improvement in range ie equivalent to Tesla Model 3 in range but still not the performance to match the MP3. Should have had that tech in the Polestar 2.
What will be interesting is if Geely sells the Polestar 2 AWD for £50,000 and will sell the FWD car for £40,000, then Geely might market the Lynk/Zeekr AWD at £40,000 and then the RWD version at £30,000.
This could match the Tesla M3SR+ for performance but undercut it for price and, as we all know, the M3 cars built in China are a much higher quality than those thrown together in Fremont.
