This is an instructional tutorial RUclips video lesson teaching my 5-string banjo version of the popular bluegrass tune "Rocky Top" on 5-string bluegrass banjo. "Rocky Top" is an "American country and bluegrass song written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant in 1967 and first recorded by the Osborne Brothers later that same year." (Wikipedia). Sonny Osborne recorded the banjo part capoed on the fourth fret (key of B); I teach it here in open G.
As usual, I teach the instrumental tune lick by lick using on-screen tablature, then put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding guitar audio overlay, as well as guitar chords.
This is my own version, which reflects my desire not only to teach the melody of the song, but also to teach certain licks that I deem to be important (at least to me) and fit the given space. So there are parts where I stray from the pure melody, such as the ending sequence, in this case. My main goal, as always, is to have fun playing the banjo.
I have posted this teaching video for instructional purposes only and, in my opinion, it constitutes fair use:
"The fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright."
Free tab and play-along tracks at different speeds are available at my website, littlerockbanjo.com.
Hope you enjoy. - Видеоклипы
I find it very interesting that when you slow banjo songs down they are unrecognizable as the song they sound like faster. There are so many notes that it makes it sound great, but hard to identify. This has made bluegrass banjo the hardest instrument I've learned to play.
I never say "hard" .... it is a mental challenge!!!! IT literally grows new brain cells... synapses!!!
The first time I got fireball mail to sound right I must have played it twenty times in a row. Feels pretty good when a song starts sounding more and more right.
So popular nobody does it??? Ha!!! My son graduated from UT Knoxville last year, and we sang it at the grad ceremonies, every game, and about every bar or party we visited for the five years he was in college... Now he lives near Oak Ridge. I'm learning it so my band can do it... and we are a rock party group from SE Ohio ..... Everybody loves Rocky Top!!!!
GO VOLS!!!

hey william. it appears this tab is no longer on your site. can you repost it or is there another place to find it? thanks!
Can you explain to a newby what the G///C/G/Em/D/G/// on the bottom of the tab page for Rocky Top pg1-Verse is used for?
anybody have an answer Please?
I believe that if you were just to strum the chords for the song you would use those. Not positive though
I do believe it is the guitar part and what it is playing while banjos playing
Probably just me....but I have a terrible time trying to learn a song I have yet to hear the melody. Maybe a few intro bars enough to gather a melody in your mind...then instruct the playing to match. In many sessions, the core melody is never introduced. Just a thought.
