  • Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 10:26. Guitar chords are provided on-screen.
This is an instructional tutorial 5-string bluegrass banjo lesson teaching my version of the popular John Newton hymn "Amazing Grace." Possibly a different approach than you might have seen before.
On this video I teach the tune lick by lick, phrase by phrase, using on-screen tablature, then I put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding rhythm guitar audio overlay and on-screen chord prompts.
Free tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, www.littlerockbanjo.com.
    Hope you enjoy.
I have posted this teaching video for instructional purposes only and, in my opinion, it constitutes fair use:

Singing the words helped me a lot (to know what I'm trying to play) Finally a leson that makes sense. I can play most other instruments but this banjo don't agree too well with me. I think I can do this

I started learning the banjo from scrap and by ear since the start of the Pandemic.
William I can’t say enough, that your learning method have and is still helping tremendously in my learning. Now I can play a few of the gospel tunes you’ve put up on a moderate speed. That’s good enough for me now at 58. I’ll give you a 5-star for your methods. Cheers.

This version of Amazing grace is the most beautiful to me. It seems to me that it is real bluegrass. Thank you for this beautiful arrangement. I think it will be a pleasure to play this beautiful anthem of peace. Friendly greeting. Ivan

It took me 2 weeks, but not due to the instructor- definitely a slow student! The rest is on me- practice and with your arrangement- that part is easy! Thanks for doing this.

What a coincidence, I am visiting my brother in Virginia and I brought my Banjo to play some tunes for my nieces. They asked me last night if I could play this song for them.

Yes sir , very nice . Amazing grace is one of a special kind of a song . It's played in a 3 time beat instead of a 4 /4 time . Most songs are 4/4 time . It's why this song kinda special , other than well ...........the obvious reason 😉😉wink wink .
But then again ,another special song in a 3 time beat .... The Happy Birthday song ..
    Thanks Bill

Bill... love your version of Amazing Grace... also especially liked your arrangement of Old Joe Clark very much... bit challenging with the F chord but practice practice. Any chance your might apply your talents to "Wayfaring Stranger"? Lots of interesting chords in that. Keep up the good work. You inspire me and I'm sure many others.

Trying to play a bit of #badmando on with it.
I actually went for the melody. I'm ~8 weeks in on mando (or any instrument) and am really loving learning it-- playing by ear. Couldn't be better, I think.
I need to find my banjo guy (you can see my three videos of him, "Leif On the Creek", and see if he would like to play against each other. Would be great fun, for me, anyway!
    Cheers.
