  • Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 16:13. Guitar chords are provided on-screen.
This is an instructional tutorial 5-string bluegrass banjo lesson teaching my version of the popular Bluegrass tune Salty Dog (a.k.a. Salty Dog Blues, Old Salty Dog Blues) "a folk song from the early 1900s. Musicians have recorded it in a number of styles, including blues, jazz, country music, bluegrass... Music Services, an administrator for music publishers, identifies the song as 'Public Domain,' while the performing rights organizations American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers ASCAP) and Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) list songwriters and composers of over 10 works titled Salty Dog Blues." (Wikipedia) The version I teach here is after Earl Scruggs.
On this video I teach the tune lick by lick, phrase by phrase, using on-screen tablature, then I put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding rhythm guitar audio overlay and on-screen chord prompts.
Free downloadable tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, www.littlerockbanjo.com.
    Hope you enjoy.

2020 Spring brought me a brand new pup. A Bernese Mountain Dog who I named Banjo. He was nothing short of pure joy and best thing to happen to me in too many years.
I went all out on Banjo Dog and gained a shared love for Banjo music. His make a friend command was to "tell them howdee" and his little paw in your hand... made for instant smiles everywhere we went.
Banjo suffered a mysterious SUDDEN condition that was so painful for him that no one could touch him..
We said our goodbyes on the Animal hospital floor
And as suddenly as he came to rescue me ... he was gone.. my heart is shattered and now Banjo music just brings tears and sorrow
RIP BanjoMan I'll never forget you 💔 🐾✨️

a BIG THANK YOU Bill, greetings from New Zealand. I have been learning from you and are making good progress of up to a couple dozen songs. I am rapt to tackle this one as I learnt it on the guitar(sort of) as a child almost 60 years ago, and it was my one song until you (and Bradley Laird) came into my life, Have been able to show Bradley some gratitude by purchasing his materials. Do you have Patreon? I've looked at your skype lessons, but not sure if they're workable because of time zones. Vance

Thank you Bill. This has been a favorite song for a very long time. I didn’t realize how Cumberland Gap and Foggy Mountain Breakdown are foundational. How about a lesson for guitar break flatpicking Salty Dog?
