This is extremely helpful! Thanks so much for posting. I honestly can’t think of a better way to learn than listening to lessons by the great man who literally invented this style, and following along as he plays.

Some where between 3 and 4 notes Scruggs is going to make a tune(song) out of it. He makes it sound so easy!

I think it’s fascinating how Earl assumes the student will be able to hear the key of the individual strings so as to get in tune with them.
Yes there were Strobes around in those days I suppose but they were not common. All other tuning devices, even in my own time, required the ability to hear and tune with a sound of some sort.

Yeah i dont get it. I try all the time. I'll tune my banjo to what i think is right and then I check it and im always off somewhere. Let alone in the middle of a song! As part of the song!

Pitch pipes! Remember those little round pitch pipes the choir teachers all had.

@@tommaxwell429 Sure. But they are of no use if you can’t hear pitch.

@@CAROLUSPRIMAHmmm, 1)I don’t believe that anyone is that tone deaf, 2) In the unlikely event they are, I highly doubt they would be interested in music, especially playing an instrument. Most can be taught to hear pitch and most of us can even be taught to sing. “When you know the notes to sing, you can sing most anything! do-a dear a female dear….”
