    Hi Gary, I really enjoyed this lesson. I've been playing (teaching myself banjo) about 2 months now and I am very interested in the lesson on "Chord Inversions". I started my musical career on the guitar @ age 17..then played the bass for a number of years and then back to the electric guitar and then finger picking an acoustic for the last couple of years. I am having so much fun now with the banjo; it's sparked that musical excitement all over again! Can't wait to see the next lesson.. you seem like a great guy and a very easy instructor to follow along with. Thank you for sharing with us!

    So if I were to play Amazing Grace in a group of 3 guitarists, a few banjo players, a mandolin player, and a bass player, all singers, would I be playing this version? This video follows the melody beautifully, but the melody in my case is being sung. What would I play instead, on the banjo?

    • @GaryLPuckett
      @GaryLPuckett 8 лет назад

      +jch1276 That's a good question JCH! This arrangement would serve as a banjo solo. If you wanted to accompany the song you would want to play the chords and do an appropriate roll or chop. Keep in mind that this song is in 3/4, so for chopping think "Boom-Chick-Chick" A roll I use for backup for this song would go (string numbers)
      3 2 1 2 1 2. It's hard to describe.....we could Skype to explain it to you or I could email you a video.

    • @jch1276
      @jch1276 8 лет назад

      I understand the roll pattern! So far, the only roll pattern I have learned is 3 2 1 5 1 3 2 1; I don't think this one works for Amazing Grace. And I never thought of this as a 3/4 song...learning new things everyday! Thank you for this!

    • @GaryLPuckett
      @GaryLPuckett 8 лет назад

      +JasonHousianitis Yeah...that roll definitely won't work for this song. You are welcome!

    • @GaryLPuckett
      @GaryLPuckett 10 лет назад

      Hi Danny! First of all, that's a super cool banjo you're playing.
      You are on the right track with your version of Amazing Grace. Your tone is good, and your rolls are very smooth and even, and as you know that's hard to do!
      A couple things to watch:
      1) Time signature. Amazing Grace is in 3/4. You can think of it as waltz time or even the polka type "Omm Pa Pa" kind of rhythm. For most of the tune you are staying in 3/4, but there are several places where you drift into 4/4. This is not an option:)
      2) Roll choice. It looks like you are using the forward roll for just about the whole tune. I know there are folks who teach banjo this way, and while the forward roll is the most important roll in our tool box, it creates some problems if that's all we use. The problem you have with staying in 3/4 time can probably be solved by mixing in some other rolls or even by playing some quarter notes and leaving some space. If you listen to Earl, while his forward rolls were powerful and pretty much perfect, he also left some space in his playing and thats what made him so easy to listen to. I think banjo sounds best when it's not just a steady stream of 1/8 notes. I'm a big believer in trying to match the techniques and rolls we use to the spirit of the song, and Amazing Grace wants a little bit more space in it than we can give it just using forward rolls.
      Overall, you're doing some good work here Danny. I'd suggest start trying some different rhythmic patterns and rolls to go along with your already strong forward roll and see where that takes you. Keep it up!

    • @q1kllix524
      @q1kllix524 10 лет назад

      Hi Gary.Thank you for your feedback.
      The banjo is a 1970 MAYA.
      It weighs 13 pounds 14 ounces. And has a great sound.
      I know you are right about the timing I have had real issues with in all my playing. I only follow tablature so can only play the roll patterns that I'm given.
      I will definitely be keeping it up I love playing and can't imagine life without a banjo by my side.
      Thank you again for taking the time to look and for giving your feedback. It is most appreciated.
      I'm going to get my metronome out and try to get my timing sorted.

    • @GaryLPuckett
      @GaryLPuckett 7 лет назад

      Hi John. That's pretty much correct. There's not a single pattern that I'm committed to in this kind of tune. Check out the tabs; you can download them for free from my website or I'll send them to you.
      Sorry I didn't have the correct camera angle! It looked good when I was editing it, but it got cropped in RUclips. I'm learning about video editing and will try to make sure all moving parts are visible in the future.
      Grandfather Mountain is actually in NC just off the Blueridge Parkway. In my CD, I used the term not so much to refer to that specific mountain, but to the idea that the Appalachian Mountains are so ancient and kinda watched the arrival of human beings. And have a lot to teach us, just like a wise old Grandfather.

    Real beginner here. I hear this term a lot: What is a "tab"?

    • @GaryLPuckett
      @GaryLPuckett 10 лет назад

      "Tab" means "tablature." It'a a way of notating music for stringed instruments. It dates back to the 12th century of so. Some musical "purists" are contemptuous of tab, but for banjo it's the only way of writing music that makes any sense at all. For example, if you saw middle D on standard music staff, there is one place to play that on a piano. There are 5 different ways to play that note on banjo.
