This is an instructional tutorial 5-string bluegrass banjo lesson teaching my version of the popular Ralph Stanley bluegrass banjo tune, "Clinch Mountain Backstep."

On this video I teach the tune lick by lick, phrase by phrase, using on-screen tablature, then I put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding rhythm guitar audio overlay and on-screen chord prompts.

I know that it’s been a long time since you posted this but I would just like to tell you that I am very grateful for your videos and how they’ve helped me to learn banjo. My late grandfather loved bluegrass and with every tune you, Mr. Jim Pankey and random tabs have taught me I get to remember this great man and have a great time doing it!

Great lesson and great picking William, thanks for helping those of us who struggle. I would just add, its been said by others your lessons are so well done it makes these tunes so easy to understand everything, the tune, the structure, the rolls patterns etc and soon gets it all into my head. IMO the best and easiest to follow teacher on youtube, many others are good banjo players but not so good at the teaching. A big thank you from the UK

Couldn’t agree more. William has been a great help for me, trying to learn songs that are not familiar. I have the Scruggs Black Book to hand all the time (as well as countless others), but it’s like looking at a wall of “bricks” (notes) & tabs just don’t give me the feel of how the song should sound. I like the ‘bluesy’ notes that he feeds in from time to time.

I think I've seen some people pinch the first and second string on this song instead of the fifth and first . Is that just personal preference or is there a reason behind it ?

I have a problem with blue gras. I know how to do the rolls pretty goo, I know how to do pull off/on , slides , hammer -on etc but, I can't seem to find the melody in any song with blue grass and that is my Major problem with that. Would you help me please tabs don't make any sense without the melody in there somewhere. says Judy Corrette in Wildwood, Fl
HI Judy, you might try going to this page -- www.littlerockbanjo.com/banjo-audio1.htm -- find the audio tracks to the tune in question -- and give a listen, especially to the faster tracks. Hopefully you would be able to better hear the melody weaving its way through the notes.

The hardest part of learning this tune for me is figuring out the intination (think that's the right word). Going from a melodic method of learning the notes in succession to playing them in the rythmic way they were intended. I keep having to go back to the beginning well before getting to the end of part A. Frustrating but hard to teach i suppose.

What is that thumb pick you are using?
It's a Blue Chip, Crowe length, Reso thickness. I use a Medium -- BCT-RESO-JDM. Worth every penny of 40 bucks, IMHO. Just don't lose it!

@@williamanesbitt Does it have a tendency to slide down your thumb like plastic thumbpicks do after playing a bit?
