You can make up your own rolls as long as they are in time. Here is a nice inside roll 4,2,3,4,1,2,3,1 Sound really good with a G chord and an E minor chord
I’ve been playing 5 sting for over 40 years and have built up many techniques using just a soft pic, thanks for the inspiration to allow this senior to finally try finger picking, having control of the neck itself will probably be a blessing therefore I just need to concentrate on finger timing cheers 🥂
THank you!!! I fingerpick guitar, and "banjo rolls" freaked me out. HOWEVER, you explained clearly and slowly, and now i know: its like fingerpicking!! Muscle memory will get me through, this is great.....
ive been thinking about learning banjo for a while, bout 3-4 months. most banjo guides ive seen are all in some fancy studio or somthin along those lines, but then i come across your channel and it feels like your a buddy showing me in the side yard. its a lot more comfortable, plus the way you teach and take the time to explain is real easy to follow, i think im gonna head into town tomorrow before work and actually pick one up. thank you for showing and ill watch your guides and keep along
You just made something click for me! You said the rolls are the sequence of your fingers not the strings. I don't know why I didn't realize that sooner. Now maybe I can get a little better. Thanks!
I'm moving to n.c. to homestead and have always wanted to play the banjo. Wife told me it'd be pretty sexy if I learned how to play bought one on ebay and this is the kind of video I need thank you.
After 30 years of guitar, now a banjo. What great videos. The tranquility and the clear explanation in combination with the images, I am very happy with it! Thank you Mason for your great lessons! Greetings from the Netherlands
Great to see you two together. Interesting video. I changed for a heavier head, a decent bridge and got my washburn B9 professionally set up. Made an incredible difference. Doesn't stop me wanting more banjos though....meant to post this on the video you did with Mr Pankey.....
Mason, thank you young man 🎅🤠🙏Have loved the sound and history of banjos and even being an old man, want to try. I have a 12 string Alvarez acoustic I haven't applied myself to. Didn't start young enough or dedicated myself enough. I preach the shame is not being willing to learn things, perhaps I'll follow my own advice. Your rolls for 3-4 strings I get, 5 or so will take perseverance when I find a banjo, I love their sound as well as the 12 string Alvarez and can it be used for rolls until I get a banjo?God bless you and thank you Sir 🎅🤠🙏
Thank you so much for such a concise informative introduction! I've already gotten so much faster in a few days - how long does it take to get to the "fastest" speed you demonstrate? A few months typically?
@@sonofpait1310 It depends on the person, it took me a day or two and a student of mine didn’t take more than a week to get the rolls up to speed. It depends on how much you practice, the speed I demonstrated in the video isn’t very fast though and should be fairly easy to achieve
It's all so confusing to me. I jumped from the Bass to the Banjo. They are as different as night and day. I thought: Ahhh! How difficult can it be? Well, there is a finesse to it, unlike playing the Bass. I am happy to have found this video. Hopefully, this heavy-handed Bassist can learn a little finesse learning to play the Banjo.
Suggestion: start the video with the dream. Play all the rolls nice and fast at the start of the video before you start speaking. And then we know what we're aiming for. I'm about 2 minutes in and still haven't heard any of the rolls played properly! Thanks, great content.
@@imapseudonym1403 You do! Musical talent doesn’t exist to the extent that people think, good musicians got there because of countless hours of dedication and practice
@@MasonCroneMusic No, I really don't. Please don't give false hope to people, that's been done to me, and stupidly, I thought "hey maybe I could" and started playing the Autoharp. Months of practice thinking "maybe I can get better". Nope. Now, it's an expensive dust collector...
Do you need the metal things on the fingers? I'm thinking about getting a banjo but I don't have anyone I can ask. The only string instrument I've ever played was violin for a couple months
Hey young man you ever heard of John prine check it out, he's half the musician you are he may be dead now but if you could do anything like John prine you got it going on❤
Not really related to this video, but do you have any tips for avoiding accidentally muting other strings while trying to play notes with my left hand? I have seen a lot of videos saying to arch my fingers more but it starts to hurt my fingertips fast when I do it like that.
Basically all you can do is make sure you're not touching them. It's that simple. Which can be hard when starting and you do have to arch your fingers a little. It just takes practice! 😃
Take your thumb and instead of gripping the neck place it in the center of the neck it will arch your finger its uncomfortable at first but you'll get used to it
Its not a "Grenada" inlay, it's just hearts and flowers... Countless banjos have this pattern. Mine is a 2004 Gold Tone OB 250+ which just happens not to have an inlay on the first fret. The new ones have it though.
I use a metronome sometimes, usually just to make sure I'm going the same speed on every instrument when I make a multi track recording. I've heard it can help improve speed too though.

I got my first banjo yesterday and I’ve just spent the last like 6 hours practicing the first roll😂

Decided to learn following you alone. Thank you. Using a Donner dbj200 here. Five string bluegrass setup.
Thank you! It would e nice to hear all those rolls at full speed so I can see how it fits into an uptempo 4/4 setting

Rolls?? Man I love rolls!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
if I have failed at the guitar, is the banjo my next mountain to die on?
Hell no. You always have the bass
You’ll use your thumb to pick down on the top three strings pointer finger 4 string middle finger on the bottom string 5 th string
I am not a good banjo player. I am just learning I started on cripple Creek. The guy I was learning from died.
Yes; except you numbered the strings backward. The short, top string is the 5th string.

Hi, I'm a beginner banjo player. Please tell me what rolls are available for an Irish 4-string banjo?
I don't play 4 string banjo... Pretty sure you play it with a flat pick. You'll need a 5 string if you want to play rolls and bluegrass
How did you get a granada inlay, without the first fret inlay,I don't see one like that on their website, that's also my preference.

I can never find some easy rolls for a 4 string banjo ): (mine has 4 strings, it's called a banjolele?)
You don't play rolls on those, it's a completely different instrument. You need a five string if you want to play in this style
@MasonCroneMusic wow i didn't know that, seems like i messed up buying /: i thought it'd be easier bc i already know how to play the ukulele
@@Gremlin.lemonbeeThere are people who play forward, backward and rolls on the banjolele. Search RUclips for banjolele and rolls.
