People who say he's no Earl Scruggs are off the mark. Besides the fact that no one is Earl but Earl, this kid's a pretty good banjo picker. If he'd have tuned his banjo it would have sounded pretty damn good. He also didnt have to try to play so fast, his timing suffered a bit when he really cranked it up. He coulda played at a more comfortable speed and it still would've been plenty fast enough. A little slower and an instrument in tune and it would be hard to criticize that performance.
Cowbell is tougher than it sounds. I should know--I was the triangle. With triangle, less is more. One note in the middle of the song, and just back out. Don't be flippant.
“This song goes out to my cousin Cutter, he’s in the county jail now fer that damn ol’ moonshine he was cooking out in them ol’ woods but he’s all right”
it is a very fun instrument and easier than guitar :) it depends on how loose you're right hand fingers are. you don't do much work around the frets but you pick with three fingers like a dobro
Kinda sad that people are too busy trying to come up with “hillbilly” jokes that they lose the beauty in this performance completely. Go back and listen, without northern bias, to one of the most influential instruments of our time. And a hat tip to that enormously talented banjo player!!!
Yeah I agree. And it's sad that people are too ignorant to see that it is part of his act, to set the mood, it is probably a talent show. If you want to be a fucking comedian, get your own you tube channel!
Bloody brilliant! I'm just starting Banjo and am blown away with this - very inspiring :) All those that have criticised this video completely miss what music is all about. Music isn't about being perfectly in tune, or perfectly in time. It's about what Joel did - which is to go out there, give it a large portion and give the crowd something to cheer about. You can hear from the applause that he blew the crowd away. Job done.
This kid sounds like he has been watching the first 'Murphy Method' beginning banjo video. Those 3 songs are on the first dvd and she breaks it down so anyone can do it with practice, my point is he is playing it JUST how she taught it on the video. Great place to start out learning the 5 string. Nice work!!
Michael Weston That's not really a particularly funny joke to be honest. Anybody who has ever played a banjo knows there's one answer. Most musicians who have heard a banjo also know what they sound like. Get down off your high horse and try learning to play the banjo yourself. Maybe then you'll be in a position to judge.
Ed Gein I think your overacting a bit to what is a joke that any committed banjo player has probably heard a dozen times. If the gentleman were to learn to play he would discover that there isn't one answer, there are actually dozens of tuning options for the five string banjo, beside standard open G. Most intermediate old time players will of played at least a couple of different tunings. Most people who play the banjo are fairly good laid back and know how to take a joke about a banjo and will also tell jokes about the banjo. Mark Twain (who played banjo) said "A gentleman is someone who knows how to play the banjo, but doesn't.
M. William Keating Yeah...if he was actually make a joke then I would have agreed with you. In this case, he wasn't making a joke. He was just judging people on something he likely can't even do himself.
Michael Weston What's the difference between a banjo player driving down the road and a frog driving down the road? There is a slight possibility that the frog might be going to a gig.
That was AWESOME PICKIN'!!! YEEE HAW, I lived as a farm boy for years and really appreciate your talent and one thing, Hillbilly music is an obsession of mine, I love it.
You should hear my old man jam. We had Tony Trischka or Bela Fleck crash at our house in the 80's. Not sure which one, I was a kid, my Dads banjo teacher had taught one of them.
Loved this video brought back some good memories... my brother took a couple of lessons hell 40 yrs. ago and that was the song his teacher had him learn, the teacher played it and had a cassette tape taping it . When he finished he gave my bro the cassette and said there ya go... practice your finger patterns like i showed ya and get this song learned. If i heard cripple creek once i've heard it a thousand times... my bro smoked that song, took almost 2 weeks practicing a little here and there. Not the easiest instrument in the closet to play... guy in the video did a good job !!
As a person that grew up in WV, I hear "Oh, where the Hillbillies live!" every time I mention the state up here in my current state of Massachusetts....lol. I used to live next to a guy when I was a kid that we all called "The Banjo Man" because he was always out on his back patio playing a banjo. One day my little sister and I decided to ask him about his banjo and we learned that he also made custom banjos and guitars out of crazy things like shovels. I still think about him some 30 years later. My family and him became really great friends over the years of being neighbors. When I picked up the trombone, I would "jam" with him after school and on the weekends.❤ I find myself missing those days, even if there was nothing else to do in my town back then...lol!
Not an American, and I've lived in Asia my whole life, but something about the Banjo and Southern America in general seems so inviting to me. I'd love to take long country drives, bump into strangers and drink moonshine as someone plucks a banjo, get called, "son," by an old rancher... Yeah, I'm visiting the American South one day.
I lived in the American south for a bit. I'm also half Chinese. Just be prepared for wholesome racism. Not sure how else to describe it. If you're not Chinese, they're going to ca you Chinese or Japanese. But they won't really mean anything by it. They might call you a chink or something, but again, they won't really mean anything by it, haha. There are a few who are legitimate racists, but luckily most of those types are hermits. The south has a whole lot of southern hospitality. Kinda hard to explain unless you experience it
Just happened to upon this... it about brought tears to my eyes. My grandpa used to play cripple creek on the banjo. It was a familiar tune. Great job!
Fantastic, I love Banjo playing! It's such a warm and rythmic music, it makes me sentimental and brings joy. I would like to see a band where a banjo plays together with a mandoline and a balalaika!

Needs more moonshine.
Needs more cowbell
Cowbell is tougher than it sounds. I should know--I was the triangle. With triangle, less is more. One note in the middle of the song, and just back out. Don't be flippant.

I am from new York and I definitely think we need more talent like him. So authentic and raw. But still quite lovely and entertaining.

I have electric guitars, accoustic, but I would luv to own a banjo, I luv the unique sound, puts a smile on my face, rock on Mr Hillbilly!!
Zac rider Same here :D
it is a very fun instrument and easier than guitar :) it depends on how loose you're right hand fingers are.
you don't do much work around the frets but you pick with three fingers like a dobro
***** dobro is similar to the banjo by the finger pickin' but I warn you... beware of the slide! Haha
+Jameyson Mac Donald Your uncle is still entertaining where he is. God bless.
Kinda sad that people are too busy trying to come up with “hillbilly” jokes that they lose the beauty in this performance completely. Go back and listen, without northern bias, to one of the most influential instruments of our time. And a hat tip to that enormously talented banjo player!!!
He was amazing

Nice work!!
I bet he never thought he would be playing for, as of 27 November 2019 14,777,483 people

Thing is, this hillbilly music is HARD to play.
Jack Rota i love it its a beautiful sound to my ears
Rumblebee Games/news haha
most banjo tuning is open, so it's really not that hard to play when you get the basics down dude
Many banjoists use fingerpicks
I learned how to play a banjo in a week my grand daddy always played when i remember as a kid just gotta stay focused on playing
Fabulous playing. Wish I had half of his talent. Respect from Ireland.
Q: What does a banjo sound like when it's completely in-tune?
A: No one really knows
Michael Weston
That's not really a particularly funny joke to be honest.
Jason Keck hahaha oh wow. nice one man
His banjo is out of tune? Didn't notice because it actually doesn't matter. I still enjoyed every second of his songs.

You should hear my old man jam. We had Tony Trischka or Bela Fleck crash at our house in the 80's. Not sure which one, I was a kid, my Dads banjo teacher had taught one of them.
That is one seriously talented young musician. Well played!

Banjos were originally made out of gourds I’m pretty sure
Hillbilly used serenade.

Kinda hard to explain unless you experience it
We'll gladly accept ya
i was hoping so much that he would be like “ok folks this next song is called cousin love”
