Roy Clark could play anything with strings. His fiddle playing is right up there with his guitar and banjo.
Roy Clark was several times national banjo champion in his youth.. this obviously helped his guitar playing too.

Hee Haw was mostly known for corny humor, but was a showcase for artists who are country legends. I loved it as a kid, and there are more outstanding performances than I can count.

This is why the people like Us who grew up in the 60s and 70s say today's music sucks. Hardly anyone actually has talent these days.
I quit listening to music radio because there was nothing new being done, it was just the same ole rock n roll that had been played since 1955.
Yes a few new good bands came along, with a few good songs. But nothing that matched those 25 years from 1955 through 1980!!

Yes, because this show was supposed to be silly, something you could watch with your grandparents... but also featured music like this EVERY WEEK.
Roy Clark won the National Banjo Championship in 1947 and 1948 at the ages of 14 and 15 before he started his guitar career.
Roy was a Master on every instrument he picked up. He never acted like he was something special and even made fun of himself while playing pieces. What a great Musician and wonderful human being. We miss him so much.

@@montanacowboy5265 One time my husband, a truck driver , was looking at the rock displays in Quartsite AZ and he met Roy. They talked a bit and he wounld up autographing a twenty my husband had on him. A time later he got in a bind and had to spend it. But the memory of meeting him has lasted over 30 years. My husband said he was one of the most humble person he ever met.
People are so quick to dismiss country music and musicians.
These two are BOTH premier musicians and that was AWESOME!
I was with a band for a while and being a teenager I made a comment about rock musicians being better... The band members I was playing with were seasoned professionals and they shut me down quick. They were telling me about country guitar players that could play circles around most rock musicians... basically made me eat my words and I started really playing attention to technique rather then music genre and learned a lot from both rock and country musicians. Now it doesn't matter to me what style I'm playing as long as I'm playing for people to enjoy themselves.
Roy did an episode of The Odd Couple back in the 70s. He played multiple instruments in multiple genre's. His rendition of the Maleguena is unparalleled. It's Awe inspiring. Jack Klugman and Tony Randall were so blown away that they fell out of character.

I was blessed to be a front desk clerk when Roy and Buck played the Missouri State Fair in 1976. They gave us backstage passes. I watched from the wings as they played these songs. Amazing memory. Thanks for sparking it. 💖💖💖.

Mandolin and fiddle are also in Roy Clark's wheelhouse. If you can find it, he was on the Muppet Show and played Rocky Top, playing all 4 instruments. Loved seeing your face when they quit kidding around and just played. Great reaction

Roy could play anything with strings. This was from the TV show called Hee Haw, that's why they were dressed that way.
Another really cool thing about Hee Haw is so many talented and popular artists would come on the show, occasionally a bunch of them would just want to jam on the show. This was called the Million Dollar Band because that's what it would cost in 70s-80s money to book these artists. The members included Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph, Floyd Cramer, Charlie McCoy, Danny Davis, Jethro Burns, Johnny Gimble, and Hee Haw co-host Roy Clark.

Buck Trent is still alive and was a master musician in his own right. Buck invented the electric banjo that he used for many years giving Porter Wagoner a signature sound.
Buck was a lead guitar player who did session work on guitar and banjo for years.
Buck and Roy toured together for many years and cut some albums together.
Sadly, Buck recently passed away.
The Banjo is an African instrument.
Roy Clark, by far, is the greatest string man in the history of strings. He was eons ahead of everyone even by today's stadards.
These were masters of their craft at the top of their game. Roy is in the conversation of The GOAT of guitarists with Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, et al.
If I remember correctly. Eddie Van Halen contacted or tried to get lessons from Roy.

My parents watched Hee Haw every week so I got to see both Roy Clark and Buck Trent play many times. Another great one is Roy and Glen Campbell playing together, y'all need to watch that one if you like Roy.

Roy Clark was truly an original. Not only could he make you laugh but he could make you dang near cry as well in his songs . One song in particular that he sang called Yesterday when I was young is such a poignant song about life . Thanks again ✌️

For me it was "I never picked Cotton." Both my of parents, in their 80s did pick cotton to give me a better life.
You should see him play "Malaguena", on the guitar. He strums so hard and fast, it's amazing the instrument didn't catch fire and explode.

A family friend was Roy Clark's neighbor. He'd be heard practicing hours at a time. Used to drive by his house almost every time we went fishing in the Chesapeake Bay.
When someone asked Eddie Van Halen how it felt being the greatest guitar player in the world, he told them to ask Roy Clark!
The best thing about this is seeing someone from a younger generation enjoying the talent from some classic entertainers.

I loved some of Jim Stafford’s songs! “Spiders and Snakes”, of course. And “Swamp Witch”. (I think of Hattie as an herbalist/natural medicine practitioner who let the townspeople think she was a witch so they’d leave her alone. Delightfully creepy song!) There were some other good ones too. I don’t remember him having his own show so I guess we never watched it. Either that or my memory ain’t what it used to be.
@@terri2494 yeah it was a great show it only lasted 1 season but I love the show I don't understand why I didn't last longer. he had this ventriloquist doll named Rodney which was just an old hippie behind him but there was also My girl Bill. And Wildwood weed was my favorite 64-year-old hippie here and don't worry my memory isn't the same either rock on sister! PS Don't and don't forget "under the scottishman's kilt"

Not only was he a talented multi instrument musician he had amazing stage presence.
Instant like for being the first reaction to dueling banjos that has ever randomly popped up for me.
Roy was seriously in GOAT territory…just ridiculously talented.
What's even more impressive, and easily missed, is that they actually turned the beat around and got it back again so incredibly effortlessly (towards the end). I kept time with it (I'm a musician) and had to go back and listen to it again because I thought I had messed up! Legendary 👏🏆🥇
OMG I don't know how anyone would know of Roy Clark. This guy could do it all. Sing, act, comedy and serious, loved his fans to no end. He has to be one of the best ever on instruments. I watch him and Chet Adkins on guitars and it was wild. Go watch hee haw and see the comedy of 70's, Warning a lot may trigger you so be careful it was a different time no one ment anything bad they just wanted to have fun. Glad to see younger people looking up others and maybe learning a few tricks!
You really need to watch the movie "Deliverance". And yes, Roy was the best, greatest, the most on anything with strings. He also had a great voice. One of my favorites was "Yesterday, When I Was Young". While you're in a banjo mood, also look up Earl Scruggs "Foggy Mountain Breakdown". Just watching his fingering is amazing!
You should mention Deliverance is not a movie for children or even young teenagers everyone forgets that the movie is really a horrifically ugly movie about Hillbillies who killed in sodomized a guy a very dark movie it just has one banjo playing scene that sounds good I'm not saying it's a bad movie but it's not for everyone especially kids only the music banjo music is good that's all the name Deliverance has nothing to do it doesn't deliver anybody or it isn't religious or spiritual. I just thought I'd better say that

@@julie.1081 well I'm an old liberal hippie and I wouldn't let my children or grandchildren watch it when they were kids. I tried to warn my parents who are dead now that they should not let their adopted grandchild watch it she was 11 or 12 my mother was a nutcase and she said Crystal can watch anything she wants and my mother was actually pushing the movie on the kid. So I told my mother and father and I thought my father would have enough sense to XNA I said there's a scene where one of the guys is sodomized by a hillbilly it's really gross and it's really ugly and I don't think Crystal should watch it my mother deliberately got the movie for the kid and played it for her. Hours later I came into the living room and my parents were sitting in front of the TV watching the end of the movie they were sitting and stunned silence and Crystal was gone and I asked where Crystal was and my father said she got up and left.

Roy was so big - he could play anything with strings.
I never met my Great Grandma, she died a little before I was born, but that's what was said about her, that she could play anything that had some strings on it. I would have LOVED to have met her I once asked what instrument she played best and one person said Mandolin, another said Banjo, another said Fiddle and another said Guitar, then my dad said "basically, if it had strings on it, she could play it and play it well." They said she also played auto harp, dulcimer and zither and "was no slouch" on a piano. That's the thing that was so amazing about Roy Clark, he played EVERYTHING REAL well, people like that just super impress me.
Roy Clark is also a master of the fiddle and mandolin, and probably a few others. You should do a deeper dive into him. Hee-Haw was a comedy/country music/variety show that he starred in. That's why he and Buck Trent were dressed like farmers.

First off I am glad that you discovered Roy Clark. I grew up listening to him and his music. He was one of the favorites of my dear old Dad. Second I thank you for sharing one the greatest musicians around on RUclips so others can see how great this man was.

Young people today are blessed with technology. I'm 61 and I was a little kid when this played on Hee Haw, which was one of the best shows of all time. It combined amazing country music , with hilarious comedy. Back then there was no way to rewind, let alone record these shows. If you missed it, you missed it. That is why we were glued to the TV when this show came on. If you didn't take care of business, you know, in the library, then you held it. Missing them play something like this was something you didn't do.
I only wish more young folks would take the time to watch some of these shows. You wouldn't be missing much, unless you watch some Letterkenny or Shoresy, LOL.

My family used to watch Hee Haw every week. So I saw this when it was originally on tv. A great "Clean" comedy show that's pure country.

The original version of Dueling Banjos was performed by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell for the movie soundtrack of the 1973 film called Deliverance. The single hit #1 on the Country Chart and peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 Singles Chart.
WRONG!! This was written and recorded in 1955 as "Feuding Banjos" by the Country star Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith. A group called The Dillards popularized the song in the mid '60s on the folk circuit, and it was their version that the author James Dickey heard and thought would fit nicely in the film version of his novel Deliverance. Yes the movie Deliverance brought the song to more fame but they are NOT the original. Do your homework.

His talent is REALLY shown on an episode of The Odd Couple
Part of the reason he’s not a household name is because he stopped playing big public concerts I think in the 80s. He had some issues with his back and it was tough for him to travel and to stand there and play for that length of time. But he very often could be found in these little dive bars playing with the house band and having the time of his life. And he was funnier than all get out. But he just wanted to play and have a good time. Innoway he’s a lot like Vince Gill, who sat in on hundreds of recording sessions unaccredited on CDs for years just because he enjoys it so much.

This is from the 70's country themed comedy/variety TV show , Hee Haw, that's why they are wearing overalls. I watched this show with my grandma all the time when I was a kid.
Two things…
1) As amazing as Roy Clark is, Buck Trent out plays him - wow. What a feat!
2) Allowing Buck Trent to show him up like that just shows how magnanimous was Roy Clark and in the truest sense of musicianship, he put the music first and ego second. Wow!
What an amazing performance.
Roy was the best...just a nice, nice man. And he did allow Buck, an exceptional musician himself, to outplay him HERE...but as good as Buck was, even he couldn't touch Roy's brilliant mastery of most stringed instruments.

The outfits were based on the theme of the show. And Roy Clark could out play most any guitarist alive today.
this clip is from a comedy variety show called HEE HAW that ran from 1969 to 1992. the bib overalls were a signature costume for the entire run of the show, and most guests were put in them. and yes, he also played mandolin, violin/fiddle. harmonica, and several others. he dedicated his entire life to music, and inspired countless thousands of others to learn to play. he also had a very powerful singing voice. and a perfect comedic flair.

WIKI "Dueling Banjos" is a bluegrass composition by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith. The song was composed in 1954 by Smith recorded in 1955 playing a four-string plectrum banjo and accompanied by five-string bluegrass banjo player Don Reno.
The composition's first wide-scale airing was on a 1963 television episode of The Andy Griffith Show called "Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee", in which it is played by visiting musical family the Darlings (portrayed by The Dillards, a bluegrass group), along with Griffith himself.
The song was made famous by the 1972 film Deliverance, which also led to a successful lawsuit by the song's composer, as it was used in the film without Smith's permission.

The last tv appearance that Roy made had all the cast and crew of Hee Haw along with Buck Trent. The sad thing was, was that Roy could barely play the banjo. They did a duo again but it was rough. Roy was a magnificent musician and entertainer.
Jimmy Dean had the distinction of firing Roy Clark in the early years of Clark’s career, when Dean had a local Washington D.C. TV show. Clark was always late to the gigs. Dean told him: “You’re the most talented person I’ve ever fired!”

Funny story. We had my cousin visiting. She came by Greyhound bus. When she was leaving we took her to the bus station and as she was getting ready to board, we played this. We had it on a tape and put it into just the right spot to play "Thank God and Greyhound she's gone" as she was walking to the bus. Best laugh ever. We had several people laughing and others looking at us like we'd escaped from the looney bin. We laughed all the way home.

Roy Clark can play any stringed instrument. Any list of the top 20 guitar lists or top 10 banjo lists that doesn't include Roy Clark should just be ignored.
Top whatever lists are considered a joke by some. The reason is that such lists are opinion based.
His facial expressions are the best …. I use to watch these with my gramps when I was a kid …. So glad I grew up with great entertainment…

That man was also no joke...
That was on a television show called Hee Haw. It came on every Saturday night and was just basically a bunch of country folks having a good time. I grew up watching that show and didn't realize how unbelievably talented all of them were.... musically and comedically.
You could put strings on a tree branch or an old 2 x 4, and Roy would still sound like a virtuoso on those. That's how good he was. He was also amazing on the fiddle and violin-- he could play Irish style, country style, and even classical. Unbelievable. May he Rest In Peace.
He just about plays all string instruments.
