Roy Clark was so talented. Eddie Van Halen said Roy Clark was the only person who he wouldn't go against in a guitar challenge. He said Roy could play him under the table. He used to go to pawn shops and pick up an instrument. Once he figured out how to play it, he'd get a different instrument and learn it, and then go get a different one. He could play the hell out of anything with strings. Check out the Odd Couple episode he was on when he played an old friend of Oscar Madison. He is an incredible performer.
The key aspect is learning to finger pick a 5 string banjo. You can then bring that over to a guitar and quadruple your picking speed. Finger picking uses all 5 fingers to play, and that significantly increases your speed and allows playing multiple notes at once. My mother used to finger pick (banjo and guitar) - she wasn't up to Roy's or Doc Watson's level, but it really makes a big difference compared to holding a plastic pick between thumb and forefinger. What Rock Musicians pioneered was ways to manipulate the sound both in instrument and afterwards to get more types of sound. 2 different and complementary skills.
He might have been "old" but he could still play the banjo! He was 85 when he passed & is now playing, entertaining & laughing in Heaven. Thanks Michael for showing Roy's talent!
Thanks.. Roy was incredible.. it's a bit weird to see him this old.. he was always to humble and also humorous and sharp-witted... missed.. appreciate your reaction..
Hee-Haw one of the best TV shows ever aired. There has never been anything even close. I still watch old recordings to this day. "Where, oh where, are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched the world over and thought I'd found true love, you met another and pffffft you were gone!"
Michael, I just looked up Roy Clark appearing on The Odd Couple here on RUclips. You REALLY need to watch it! He plays Malaguena on the guitar and OH MY GOSH!!!!!! His hands and fingers just FLY!!!!
When I was a kid, I had a pair of HEE HAW overalls 😂 Also, Roy Clark's song, YESTERDAY WHEN I WAS YOUNG is one of my favorite songs. Wow, just listen to the lyrics.
My dad worth them...along with his plaid shirt with pearl snap buttons. I think my mom had a matching pair as well.😂 Hee Haw was my childhood. I remember my grandmothe yelling at us kids that Hee Haw was coming on. It was how she got us to come in from playing outside all day. I recognize all of these faces even though they've aged a fair bit. It's kind of bittersweet to watch this. It's got me tearing up a little.❤
There was a lot of love and respect for Roy and Buck, and for a very good reason. It was great seeing all of the faces in that room again. Thanks Michael for this video.
In conservations of the greatest guitar player, they tend to forget Roy Clark. He could play just about anything with strings along with several other instruments. Roy had a long running show in Branson, MO that we tried to get into, but they were always sold out. Growing up with Hee-Haw gave me the appreciation for music in general along with a "korny" sense of humor.
Once someone learns how to finger pick a 5 string Banjo, they become much better at playing any plucked string instrument. Thus method of playing requires all five fingers to be doing things at the same time.
Watching a young guy such as yourself excited about the music I grew up with, is awesome. It makes me realize how fortunate my generation was, we were surrounded by great entertainers, Roy Clark was one of the best.
I would watch "Hee Haw", on Sat nite WPIX ch 11❤. B4 church Sun. Minni Pearl with tag on her hat ( she reminded me of Sister Walters from Kentucky who was a missionary who was always welcomed and beloved in our Spanish English Damascus Christian Church in the South Bronx). Roy Clark banjo 🪕 Ihe was funny didn't know he was still alive. Buck Owens and The girl with the farmer jeans, passed away. Cathy Baker. I loved the show that's what made me appreciate Dolly Parton later on. It was good clean fun, and the girls were pretty.🎉
Roy was my favorite then Buck Trent. Such talents! Buck died 10-10-2023 at age 85. Buck also played 5-string banjo, dobro, guitar, steel guitar, mandolin, and bass guitar.
Check out Grandpa Jones... Another Hee Haw alumnus... He picked the banjo, sang/yodeled until (Pretty much) the day he died at the age of 84, after suffering 2 strokes after playing, what turned out (Obviously) to be his final performance at the Grand Ole Opry in 1998...
In 1992, Bill Gaither created a show called ‘Gaither Homecoming’ which featured the great singers and older pioneers of gospel music, some of whom had retired. It was a huge success and still runs today. This show was country music’s answer to copycat the success of that show. That’s singer/songwriter’Whispering Bill’ Anderson hosting. He’s still alive at 87!
Watching Hee-Haw on Saturday evening was the way the weekend was done! It was great to see Roy playing again! I really enjoyed and miss Roy and Chet Akins as well as others!
From this same show, Roy plays a fiddle duet with Grandpa Jones' widow, Ramona. Check it out. They played the song "Liberty". That might help you find it.
The person interviewing Roy is Bill Anderson. He was a country singer and appeared as a guest several times on Hee Haw. His biggest hit, a crossover country/pop hit, is called Still.
This isn't from Hee Haw. This is Country's Family Reunion. There was Larry's Country Diner and Country's Family Reunion hosted by Bill Anderson. The shows are on RUclips.
hi michael, hope you and yours are all brilliant. this tune was the only thing i ever saw from the film deliverance. never wanted to see the film by the time i was old enough to, but love this sooooo happy music. these guys are just amazing.

Roy Clark died in 2018, but I don't know when this was recorded. He is surely missed. What a talent!

Roy lived on a farm and learned to play guitar with mail-order guitar lessons.

Someone once asked Eddie Van Haley what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world? He said ‘I don’t know, you’d have to ask Roy Clarke’…
He might have been "old" but he could still play the banjo!
He was 85 when he passed & is now playing, entertaining & laughing in Heaven.
Thanks Michael for showing Roy's talent!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Roy Clark could play a barbed wire fence and make it sound heavenly.
I hope you listen to Buddy Greene play Orange BLossom Special / harmonica... knocks your socks off
Thanks.. Roy was incredible.. it's a bit weird to see him this old.. he was always to humble and also humorous and sharp-witted... missed.. appreciate your reaction..
The full version of him and Buck doing duel banjo's back in the day is truly incredible.. This was amazing.
We saw Roy and Buck at the NC state fair in the mid 70s.

Thanks for bringing back the great memories of Roy Clark ❤😊
Believe it was the last time he played in public., He could play a fiddle. Watch Roy Clark and Jimmy Henley Orange Blossom Special.
The spark in Roy Clark's eyes after being behind the banjo is magical! What a gift to music, and America!!!😊
Yes Roy Clark, has died one of the best guitar players ever and many more instrument's a great talent to say the least.
Michael, I just looked up Roy Clark appearing on The Odd Couple here on RUclips. You REALLY need to watch it! He plays Malaguena on the guitar and OH MY GOSH!!!!!! His hands and fingers just FLY!!!!
Roy Clark passed away in 2018 at the age of 85. Rest In Paradise Mr Clark!
Buck Trent passed away last October at the age of 85, as well.
@@duanehelton4800 That I did not know! We lost some legends!
Loved Heehaw growing up.

They were asked to do Pickin' and a Grinin'. There is a video, out there, of that part too. It is worth a watch.
When Roy Clark wasn't with Buck Owens, it's great that he was with Buck Trent! (Hee Haw, & etc .. .;)
I watched hee haw with my mom and stepdad when I was little
That guy interviewing Roy is Bill Anderson, a country music star always talked so softly; He was a good singer too.
Whispering Bill Anderson👍✌️
Thanks man.
Roy Clark was country Royalty, looks like they were all here to pay tribute as he was getting on.
I’m pretty sure that this was recorded in 2012 when Roy was around 79. He passed away in 2018 at 85.
God, I'm almost as old as they are. That was always a good show.
Remember when you reacted to this the first time. ❤😂
Love dueling banjos

Buck Trent was Porter Waggoner's electric banjo player.

They said that if it had Strings, Roty could play it. He never forgot how t6o play.

♥️ Roy Clark
Glen Campbell suffered with alzheimer's for several years before he died. It has been said he never forgot his ability to play the guitar.
It was muscle memory that allowed him to play even though he remembered no one.
Actually thats when his associates knew he was in trouble when he started forgetting the chords.
You should watch the movie "Deliverance". Your life will never be the same 🫣🥴. Dueling Banjos was played in it.
❤
This is an old video. Roy, RIP, left us some time ago.
Watch dueling banjos debut in the movie Deliverance. It will make more sense when you see how it was presented.
Roy was brilliant. BTW, what's up with the mayo?
It's a bit like riding a bike, I've picked banjo for over 40 years, take long breaks and within 5 minutes or so, you're right back at it, 💯👍
I've heard that even when Glen Campbell got Alzhiemer's.. he could remember how to pic a guitar. Roy never lost his ability to pic
It’s muscle memory. Put a banjo, guitar or fiddle in his hands and his muscles just remember how to play it.
Michael have to ask you a question. Where did you use to be on ? My friend and I have been wondering for a while.
Check out JimmyHendricks Now an adult and Roy Clark -12 Street Rag

Hee Haw was a great show.

Might I recommend researching your facts before recording a video? Roy Clark died in November of 2018.
