Charlie is one of the best musicians ever on this planet and he lived down the street from me and always played Santa at my daughter's preschool and I'll never forget what a wonderful human being singer-songwriter he was rest in peace Charlie
Awe! That is so sweet! ❤ I guess Charlie and Dolly have a lot in common. I grew up on classic country, so it still amazes me how younger people have never heard it. But it’s great to see they are seeing and appreciating it now😊
This song was a massive hit worldwide in the 70`s .I grew up in Ireland and this was huge in Great Britain and Ireland and, I believe in a lot of other countries too.
Charlie was an American singer, musician & songwriter. His career spanned over 5 decades. His music covered a lot of different genres including southern & country rock, country, bluegrass, blues & gospel. He was best known for this number-one country hit "The Devil Went Down To Georgia". Some of his other songs were "Uneasy Rider", "The South's Gonna Do It Again", "Long Haired Country Boy", "In America", "The Legend Of Wooley Swamp", "Still In Saigon" etc.
This was recorded at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, a summer venue in Upstate NY. The back of the concert hall is open and there is a huge sloping lawn where people could also sit. I guarantee the lawn was packed because you can hear the fans screaming from their lawn chairs. Been there many times with my daughter to see the ballet.
Charlie and his wife were great friends to MTSU, Veterans, and were some of the sweetest people you could ever meet. He was also an amazing man of God.
Charlie Daniels Band was my first concert back in my junior year of high school. This song was just hitting the charts and the crowd was having a blast! Listening to music lets me walk down memory lane without my arthritis kicking in.
Ha!Ha!Ha! a one hit wonder! There is a deep catalog for you to dive into, with The Charlie Daniels Band you get everything you could ever wish for in a group! Try "Still in Saigon" next!
Saw Charlie live many times from the 70s on. Last time I believe he was 75 years old and still bringing it hard to the extent that he literally shredded his bow on the ending solo of this song and actually went to a second bow to finish it - at 75 years old!!! He was also as good a guitarist as he was a fiddler, although he’s best known for his fiddling. You have to check out Long Haired Country Boy, Drinking My Baby Goodbye, The Legend Of Woolley Swamp and Still In Saigon (tribute to Viet Nam vets).
This is one of his most popular songs!! When the Olympics were held a few years ago Dominique Marciano did her for exercise routine to this and won a gold medal!Everybody loves Charlie Daniels! Sadly he passed away a couple of years ago. Nice reaction
If you're from Georgia and don't know every lyric to this song, something is wrong with you! I don't even like country but somehow made it to the front row of a Charlie Daniel's show! Great concert!
I'm from California and know every word and have since I was 16 and it was played at the skating rink. We used to love it when the DJ would play the SOB version instead of the family son of a gun version.
Believe it or not, but I was at that concert in Saratoga Springs, NY. I was in the US Navy’s Nuclear Power Program and was finishing the last 6 months of a two year training program, learning to operate an actual submarine nuclear power plant called S3G that was built in Ballston Spa, NY and I was renting a mobile home in Saratoga. My car had Florida plates on it and when I parked and got out, a girl pulling in beside me said “you must really like Charlie Daniels to drive all the way to upstate NY to see him”.
I met Charlie when he came to Fort Irwin, CA to play for the troops around 2005. Nice guy. When they played The Devil Went Down to Georgia, he literary shredded his bow by the end of the song.
He was wrapping before everyone else. A fiddle is what a violin is called in country, bluegrass etc. Never call it a violin 🎻 to a country artist. This was recorded in Saratoga NY.
Charlie Daniels said Bob Dylan made his career. Dylan had a series of dates booked at a recording studio. The/an intended guitar player wasn’t available on the first day in the studio and Charlie Daniels filled in. When he was leaving (apparently obviously not coming back) at the end of the day Dylan asked the producer(?) where Charlie Daniels was going. They said he was just a fill-in. Dylan said, ~”I want him here”. Dylan then put Charlie Daniels’ name in the liner notes of the subsequent album (apparently Dylan was somewhat known for detailed liner note credits). Charlie Daniels said that really boosted his career.
I saw Charlie Daniels Live about a dozen times here in NY. Country Rock, as we called it, was a huge genre back in the 70's. Charlie was still touring up until his death in 2020. His music is amazing and his lyrics are profound. Some of his music is brilliant story-telling. Others are powerfully patriotic. RIP Charlie, and thanks for the music.
Charlie Daniels is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and this song is still played on both classic country and classic rock radio stations. This is mostly classified as Southern Rock. Charlie Daniels is a musician plays fiddle, guitar and mandolin.
Ok. In the 70’s a music hot shot went on a late night talk show saying .. Charlie Daniels can’t play a fiddle. This song was to show them… really. 😃. ❤
I'm surprised that you haven't heard of Charlie Daniels... the man was still touring the country right up until covid hit. He passed away from I think a stroke during the quarantine period in 2020. He was an amazing entertainer, a patriot who loved his country, and a humble and down to earth individual who would do just about anything to help someone else.
LoL I know you're young, but it blows me away you've never heard of these people or songs. But I do appreciate you taking the time to listen and enjoy them without judgement. Great job.
As he said in the beginning… This is in Saratoga… as in the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, in upstate NY… about an hour and a half - two hours north of NYC. I’ve been to jazz festivals at the same venue.
Charlie Daniels was a Saint always happy treated others with all the respect in the world as a matter of fact Charlie was always the first to arrive and last to leave
I saw Charlie Daniels play Orange Blossom Special and he played it so long he wore out 2 or 3 bows before he finished playing it. Talk about a crowd going wild.
I can remember this was of the first songs I ever memorized growing up in Mississippi in the 70s and 80s. So yes it is a Southern anthem...even at 54 now, I know all the words.
Charlie was told by a famous violinist (not sure which one), that there is a great difference between a fiddle player and a violinist. So, Charlie played a classical piece on his fiddle (violin - it's a fiddle for certain kinds of music and a violin for other kins). At the end, Charlie asked, "now, can you play fiddle?" The other musician had to concede that Charlie was the better musician.
I love this live version of the song and I first heard and saw Charlie Daniels in the 1980 movie, Urban Cowboy, with John Travolta and Debra Winger. And Charlie had a cameo appearance and sang this song. He's up there in heaven right now having a hoedown with all the Holy Angels and Saints! ❤
I remember in high school that any kids who carried a violin case for orchestra were asked if they could play this song 😂😂 Ummm....NO. Charlie plays a fiddle and this song is ridiculously difficult to learn & perfect
I remember seeing an interview once with Charlie. He was asked if he ever got tired of playing this song and he replied, "I might If if I ever played it right, but not until then."
Great reaction, and yeah - Charlie Daniels is nuts. As far as genres go, I think the word you're looking for is *bluegrass* - that's the subgenre of country music that this falls under. Fast-paced, high-energy, basically "old-timey techno" for all intents and purposes. Cheers.
The best show I've ever seen live. And he's got a lot of great songs, but when he left the stage, the crowd was just like that crowd, just cheering for more. When he came back on stage and asked if there was any song we wanted to hear, 10,000 plus voices screamed, The Devil Went Down to Georgia! The best encor to the best show I've ever seen followed. I'm glad I got to see him before he died.
This genre is Country Rock. Bluegrass is acoustic string instruments - guitar, violin, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, standup bass fiddle, no drums or electric guitars. Completely different sound than country rock, whose songs often have crossover success between both the rock and country charts, as this song did. Would enjoy seeing you react to authentic bluegrass though.
Yo, I was in that crowd 3 different times. Crawfish boil in the afternoon, Hot Humid Mississippi night, cold beer and Charlie Daniels. Doesn't get any better. A shame the younger crowd will not get to see him live.
Many year ago my wife and I went to Texas for a family reunion. We went to the movies with a bunch of her family to see Clint Eastwood's "Every Which Way But Loose". We walked into an almost full theater. All you could see was row after row after row of cowboy hats, both the men and the women. No heads just hats.
I once saw an interview with a deep South fiddle player, can’t remember who at the moment, who was asked something about his violin. He replied, “That’s not a violin, it’s a fiddle.” When the interviewer asked what the difference is he replied with his strong southern accent, “A violin has strings, a fiddle has strangs.”
It always makes me just a little sad when young reactors don’t know these classics from my youth. Charlie Daniels is a world class musician, hugely popular in the 70’s and 80’s all the way to today. Their music underscores my life lol. Glad you enjoyed it. Surprised, however, that you didn’t mention the keyboard player’s arm being in a cast lol. Most of the reactions I’ve seen of this can’t get over that!
@@chrischar9428 Well it says 1979 now! I swear the only reason I looked it up to begin with was to find out what year that was, and it said either 1973 or 1974, but now it says 1979!! So you win this time, Chris! If that is in fact your real name!!
You must not of ever listened to the radio or watched TV if you've never heard of Charlie Daniels. Plus, his songs are in movies and commercials. I've heard his music as hold music while on the phone and put on hold. I've also heard it as elevator music and Sunday Night Football. It's everywhere!
I’m from NY too. I’m a lot older than you tho, so back in my day, we would definitely have this kind of vibe…depending on who you saw. You seem to really enjoy some live performances. I have a gift for you. Pearl Jam, Porch 1992, live at Pink Pop.
This was my first concert in Laramie Wyoming 1979. I asked my mom which one is Charlie Daniels and she said the guy in the cowboy hat...not much help but i had a great time! I was 9
This is the One Song that everybody loves in their reaction videos. Charlie is laying down both Lyrics and the Fiddle. The topic of a simple man putting the Devil in his place AND talking smack at the same time is Priceless.
Your reactions are always so entertaining! Best Music ERA of my time 1970s. NO other decade beats it! I miss that decade! Charlie Daniels Band...LEGENDS! I can certainly tell you are very young. haha
They’re dressed this way because it’s 1979. Yeah some southerners dressed like this in the 1970s. This song made some references: "Fire on the Mountain", the name of an early 19th Century fiddle tune. “House of the Rising Sun”, is an old American Folk Tune from the 1930s about a brothel. The most famous rendition is from The Animals in 1964. Some say the Americans “stole” it from Britain where it’s called “Rising Sun Blues”. Many of the lyrics are the same. Place names are different obviously. "Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough" was a line from 1938’s “Ida Rose” sung by Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys, a Western Swing group. Western Swing was a sub-genre of Country Music played in Texas & Oklahoma and played mostly in the 1930s & 40s but performed rarely these days.
Hey guy, this concert was in Saratoga Springs, NY in 1980. I was there. Though I am from the South, the attendees digging on this band were New Yorkers, believe it or not.
This is more bluegrass than country. If you want to hear bluegrass/rock with great storytelling, then Steve Earl - Copperhead Road. The video on his channel has 223M views so you know it's a banger!
I'm guessing you're an American and if so should have heard of Charlie Daniels; having said that I'm impressed that you are exploring the greats in musical culture. I'm Canadian and have been a fan of The Charlie Daniels Band for a long, long time. That particular song was and is an American classic.
He was an amazing fiddler, I have seen on other channels that he was the first rappers lol, I don't know about that, but I do know he was an amazing entertainer.
Set up a little differently. When played as a fiddle, they use a lower bridge for quicker action/fingering, a little flatter for easier double and triple stops. Also generally steel cored strings for a louder, brighter sound. Classical violin usually uses gut (or nylon/synthetic) cored strings and a high arched bridge. And many of us claim our instruments get "used to" being played in a style.
Charlie could play anything with strings. He was from Tennessee, but Texas would have adopted him. I saw him and his band in the Astrodome, after a rodeo.
In America is his second big hit. People love Long Haired Country Boy. I won't deride it, but its not on my top 10. Legend of Wooloy Swamp. Billy the Kid. Wichita County Jail. Caballo Diablo. Simple Man. Ain't No Rag, It's a Flag.
I remember listening to this on the radio, and waiting for the end to see if the radio station played the sanitized version recorded just for the radio or the real version: "I told you once you son of a ~gun~..." Of course, we wanted to hear the real version, and "son of a gun" wasn't it!
Massive hit in the 1970s. I went out and bought the 45 RPM single to it and played it a lot. People would recite the lyrics to it sometimes as well. You heard it on the radio all the time. He's got a lot of great songs. Another one of his that I really love, probably even more than this one, it's called Long Haired Country Boy. It's got a totally different vibe. It's so laid back. But it's funny. And it also says some serious things as well but does it in a funny way and that's another one that's just really fun to sing along to. We used to play it in my honky-tonk band and it was a big crowd favorite.
Thank you for your reaction to our beloved Charlie Daniels. Sadly he is no longer with us but his music is! Yes he was singing and playing the fiddle same time! Country music has so many talented artist and I'm proud to be a fan! Come on to Texas and get ya some southern hospitality!
Mark o"Connor did part 2 of this song along with some of the biggest names in country music, as well as Charlie Daniels appearing in it as well. The song was called "The Devil Returns to Georgia". Worth a listen.
Oh goodness - NO! Not a 1hit wonder! Charlie Daniels was & will always be LEGEND!!! I love his song ‘In America’. Check it out! This & other songs of his enjoyed huge success on the pop/Billboard Hot 100. Back then, the radio stations wouldn’t play I done told you once you Son of a Bitch so instead we heard Son of a Gun lol Notice how Charlie faces ea musician as they’re playing they’re ‘solo’ if you will- a sign of respect between artists/musicians. Mostly lost now but did see it between Gaga & Bradley Cooper during their Oscar performance of Shallow. So much fun watching you enjoy this; Thank You! Stay safe & love much💖

The Charlie Daniels band was so dedicated to it's audience, they played 300 shows a year! They were exceptional!
This is one of the classics of the country genre and a gold standard for violin/fiddle playing. Love this !!

He was an amazing fiddler, I have seen on other channels that he was the first rappers lol, I don't know about that, but I do know he was an amazing entertainer.
The Fiddle and Violin are the same instrument 🙏🔥
True that, though the main difference is that a violin has "strings" while a fiddle has ""strangs"!😅😊😂
This concert was in Saratoga, New York ! Not down south. We know how to have fun upstate.
Country Rock is what it's called. Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird live at Oakland Collisium 1977. 🐦 AWESOME!
When I was a teenager in 1979, everybody wore hats and clothes like this in Lakeland Florida.
This was at Saratoga performing arts center (SPAC) in SARATOGA, NY…….
Charlie could play anything with strings. He was from Tennessee, but Texas would have adopted him. I saw him and his band in the Astrodome, after a rodeo.
How on earth can you be a musician and never have heard of this song? lol Charlie is a legend!
Fantastic in concert. Saw them perform in small town county fair. Great time.
Charlie has been performing for over 40 years, check out the legend of wooly swamp and in America and still in saigon
Charlie Daniels is the one playing the fiddle and its his band.
This concert was in Saratoga Springs, NY in 1979!
Great concert in Richmond, VA USA about two and half decades ago.
If you haven't seen and heard Charlie's version of "The Orange Blossom Special", you should do yourself a treat and find it! It is sublime!
I remember listening to this on the radio, and waiting for the end to see if the radio station played the sanitized version recorded just for the radio or the real version: "I told you once you son of a ~gun~..." Of course, we wanted to hear the real version, and "son of a gun" wasn't it!
Just as an FYI: That concert performance was in Saratoga, New York!
Great song and best song to grab a lady and swing dance to
Great reaction! Next Charlie Daniels song you might want to listen to is “In America”.
Thank you for your reaction to our beloved Charlie Daniels. Sadly he is no longer with us but his music is! Yes he was singing and playing the fiddle same time! Country music has so many talented artist and I'm proud to be a fan! Come on to Texas and get ya some southern hospitality!
This concert was in Saratoga, NY.
Mark o"Connor did part 2 of this song along with some of the biggest names in country music, as well as Charlie Daniels appearing in it as well. The song was called "The Devil Returns to Georgia". Worth a listen.
Actually it is The Devil Comes Back to Georgia
Charlie Daniels blew up not 45 minutes away from where I live in North Carolina when is the greatest country music artists of our time
Oh goodness - NO!
