I purchased my first Speedmaster in 2018, but later flipped it to purchase another watch. I realized the error of my ways - and came to the conclusion I needed a Speedmaster in my collection. I just bought the new version (3861) - and couldn’t be more happy with it! Refined and improved, I had no idea of the changes in the movement, the thickness, and the incredible bracelet with micro adjustment. Omega hit a home run with this iconic watch! I absolutely love it.
I just found out that my fiancée has gotten me one of these for her wedding present to me. I’ve been watching tons of these reviews in excitement and yours is one of the best. Thanks for the hard work!
Bought one last month and am thrilled with it. Had a 1995 model years ago which I sold, but this model far surpassed it as for accuracy, wearability, and appearance. Love it. This one is a life time watch.
I sold my 1861 for the 3861 last week and everything you said sums up what I think. I absolutely love it, much more comfortable on the wrist and easier to wind
I picked up this same version a week ago today and I couldn't be happier. I previously owned an 1861 and could never bond with it, this one is a totally different story. It checks all the boxes. I was apprehensive about only two micro adjustments but it fits perfectly. I'm a bigger guy (6'2 265) and I was concerned about the 15mm taper on my wrist but it isn't an issue at all. I also own a Planet Ocean 43.5 and wore it today for the first time, went home at lunch and put the Speedmaster back on if that tells you anything. I've watched several videos on this piece and yours is by far the best! I liked and subscribed, anxious to see more of your work. Thanks...
Great review. I agree with you, the best update to the speedy in many years. I finally pulled the trigger and got it a couple of months ago and I’m over the moon. I opted for the sapphire version after a lot of research into the actual specification from NASA back in the days. They did not have any requirements regarding the crystal and the only reason the approved watch had a hesalite crystal was that it was the Omega go to crystal at the time for this watch. It’s the nicest watch I’ve ever had and I feel so happy every time I look at it.
Some parts of your comment are not accurate. As explained by Watchfinder and quote: "Acrylic, the versatile plastic behind everything from hard contact lenses to paints, offers a considerable benefit over glass when used as a watch crystal: toughness. While not as hard as glass and therefore less scratch resistant, acrylic offers twice the resistance to fracturing-and any light marks can simply be polished out. It's propensity to crack instead of shatter on failure is also beneficial, maintaining its structure and therefore reducing the overall damage to the watch. It's why it's used in submarine windows. Acrylic comes under a multitude of a trademarks, including Plexiglass, Perspex and, of course, Hesalite. This toughness was the motivation behind NASA's decision to retain acrylic for the Speedmaster's crystal when it was selected as the official watch of the Apollo program. Omega did offer to swap the Hesalite out for a newer, harder material-sapphire crystal-however NASA determined that that the failure characteristics of acrylic were favourable to the propensity of sapphire to shatter in the same way as glass. The consequence of a thousand tiny shards of very sharp sapphire floating in zero gravity drove the decision to stick with the tried and tested Hesalite".
@@jorgerobles628 Watchfinder is not NASA. What I’m saying is that I haven’t seen any NASA documents that support the Hesalite argument. Furthermore the cabin was full of other instruments that had glass lenses on them. I’ll be more than happy to revise my opinion when some actual proof is available instead of hearsay and quote from 3rd party sources n
I love Omega's connection to Dr. George Daniels - ie. the co-axial escapement. His approach to horology was uncompromising and just knowing that same philosophy lives within this Speedmaster (or many Omegas) is tantalizing. Great video (especially those macro shots!) and keep up the great work!
I'm a little late to the party, but after selling many watches during the last months, I just bough the new 2021 speedmaster. I've consolidated my collection, now I believe less is more. Now I can't keep looking at reviews while I wait for mine! Great review!
I have to say, having avoided buying a speedy pro i tried this on in the boutique and fell in love. I have a speedy racing reverse panda 40mm which is a lovely size and felt the 42 original speedy a little big but this new case and tapered bracelet has really changed the feel of the watch. Its now firmly on my list - amazing video - bravo!
My dad had a Speedmaster moontwatch Gemini XI with the Nasa logo. Sadly he had to sell the Watch for personal financial reasons for a ridiculous low amount. I bought the hesalite 3861 few weeks ago as an hommage to my dad and I love it so much.
I've sold two 1861s, but... this may have convinced me...I need a Speedy back, and this may be the one.. Selling my IWC Mark 16... and saving for the Speedy.. here we go again! Yessss your video really helped with the decision
Thumb up before you even said a word :) I did the same thing, bought it from the AD the moment I tried it on my wrist, despite owning a few Speedies in my collection. The differences are subtle, but surely impactful! On power reserve, many have tested it and I did it too, it's about 65 hours from full to stop, instead of the 50 hours listed in the specs. I think Omega listed it as 50 for the sake of meeting the Metas requirement of accuracy at low power, as I did observe it runs considerably faster at the last 10-15 hours. Feel free to give it a try!
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Yup, I checked on my notes again. Mine is running a bit fast to begin with, especially resting dial up on the table. At full power it is about +3.5s/day. My measurement indicates the first 24 hours at 3.7s/day, the 2nd day was about 6s/day, and from the 50th hour to 65th, it measured 11s/day. Other positions should make it a bit slower. I've seen 2 versions of technical explanation on accuracy and power. One graph from Archer (the respected watchmaker at Omega Forum) indicates most movements slow down as amplitude drops. But I also see others commenting that frequency will increase due to the "pendulum length" shortens as amplitude drops. I'd trust Archer more, but this watch surly demonstrated the other way... so I don't know. :P
Such a good looking watch, the slight updates really do make it so much more brilliant. The sunken sub dials are my favourite feature. I reviewed the previous generation and that was definitely one of my favourite pieces
I really don’t know how they can improve for the next generation. Making the power reserve better is literally the only thing I can think of. But physical appearance, they’ve absolutely nailed it in every single way.
Thank you for the great video! Very nice pictures, professionally executed and all the important facts mentioned. Perfect opportunity to get an impression what the updated legend is about.
Incredible, amazing video intro with very well chosen music and images giving homage to the history of the Speedmaster and perfect, concise review of the watch. This channel should and will have thousands more subscribers. No doubt.
I don't know that I would upgrade if I owned the previous generation, but the upgrades do have me even more interested in getting one. I agree with you on the power reserve. 2 more hours isn't much of an increase for such a dramatically upgraded movement. With so much else coming in with 60-70 hours now a days, I think 70 would be great, especially for a hand wound movement. The one bummer about the hesalite version is not being able to see that gorgeous movement. That would likely push me toward the sapphire model. I have a milestone birthday next year, and I am seriously thinking of getting the new Speedy Moon watch, especially since Rolex killed off the 39mm Explorer (36 is too small for my wrist/height).
@@WatchCrunchOfficial I have an Omega boutique 15 minutes away, but I literally haven't been to the mall since the pandemic hit. I will try to get out and see one in the next month or so after I'm not so busy.
@@RedwoodAggie did you get the speedy bud? I like you very much the same. I’ve just treated myself to the watch (first omega) as it’s my 50th this year and told myself long ago that I’d have one for my 50th. Was looking at the explorer 39m also but not worth the extra charges. Well happy with my new speedy
@@buffalorevolver6473 Not yet. I am still deciding on the watch I want, but I did get to try a new Speedy w/hesalite on. My birthday isn’t until later this year though.
0:07 with the exception of giving us a smaller box with no nato, no loop no medallion, and no tool for changing the bracelet. They used to have such a beautiful presentation.
I got the sapphire version. It’s an amazing piece. I actually took it to the Rolex boutique to try out some two tones, and the sales rep couldn’t keep it’s eyes from it and kept asking me about the watch.
Have seen many videos on this watch. Yours was one of the more enjoyable. The only 'flaw' in this watch, as you mentioned, is the power reserve. I think a sweet spot would be atleast 10 hours past however many days it can go, in this case 58. That way you can just wind it every other day without having to worry about missing your window if you slept in or got distracted. Two hours is cutting it close. Great watch, classic looks, it will be mine.
What do people like the best- the dial? The case? The bracelet? Nope. It's that milky, vintage hesalite distortion.😋 Beautiful video, as always. A+ content and photography
My 1994 "50 years Apollo 11" ran as a daily beater up to June 2016 before it needed a service as it couldn't be winded. That's almost 22 years continuously worn in the Armed Forces for a 861 Speedmaster. The 3861 still has to proof itself ! #MoonwatchUniverse
Nice video, thanks! Just got mine in saphire version and I love it! I also have small wrists and wearability is great. I did however purchase the black Nylon/Leather clasp bracelet. This makes the watch even lighter and comfortable to wear.
Really great video man. Cool to gain the visual context at the exhibit, really adds to the story. I love the bracelet on these new models. I think the closed back is the one I'll go for (hopefully soon, let's see how the rest of the year goes haha)
Thanks for the great review. I love your videography to add the NASA shots . I just ordered the hesalite model yesterday. The piece has tonne of great reviews so i took the plunge :)
Great watch, and I love it. Though people should be aware that the 3861 movement has teething problems. The chronograph function on my 4 months old hesalite has started acting up (stops at 58 seconds, which also stops the running second and the watch altogether). Did a bit of research and it's not an uncommon ocurrence for people who use the chrono function frequently. Dropped it yesterday at the Omega shop, who told me I should have it back in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that they fix the issue permanently.
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Since you're into Omega Speedmaster's, do take the time to read carefully through this thread: omegaforums.net/threads/3861-movement-broken.120071/ The issue that affects my watch has affected a number of others, and is basically down to a design flaw in the bushing connecting the center wheel to the main plate. They seem to have corrected this as of June 2021 (changed the bushing), but virtually all watches produced before then are susceptible to develop this issue over time. Not to say that they all will, and it depends on the watch usage, as apparently this affects predominantly people who use the chronograph function regularly. But the potential for trouble is there, until the watch is serviced by Omega and this bushing is changed. This means that all of us who have bought the Speedmaster Professional in the first few months after its release in January 2021 (and the ones who have bought the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary or the Moonshine) are beta testers of the new movement. Oh, and Omega has known about the problem since at least September 2020.
Yes exactly! Brilliant design ...from the side you only notice the "shoulders" + the bezel and dome of the hesalite. Looks really good also Bec it's got soo many layers that you don't see in other watches.
I think for the exact reasons that you mentioned in your summary- ie. the changes were quite incremental (except, perhaps, the movement) - I wouldn’t consider the new Speedmaster for now. Let’s see if that changes with time
Great video and cinematography. I am in the market for a new 3861 sapphire sandwich early next year - as soon as I pay off my 911 I'll be going to my AD for this beauty.
@@lighthunter1980 Money is cheap, I could pay it off now, but I don't tie up cash in an asset if it can be utilized elsewhere to provide higher returns. Probably why I have a 911 and you're on here making uninformed assumptions. Also, my special edition 911 has appreciated 20k since I purchased last year, so there's that too.
I’ve seen these for around $5k-$5.5k. I’m really considering selling my two Tudors that equal about that amount and going with just this Speedy as my only watch…
Not had any experience of previous Speedies, but I will be purchasing the 2021 version regardless and in the very near future. Great watch and great video. Thank you 🙏
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Many thanks for the offer. I live in the UK and of course I would have to weigh up the difference between currencies and any potential import taxes, but that is a very kind offer and even if I don’t take you up on this offer, I would love to take you up on further offers if that would be possible please. Once again thank you very much
Thanks for the detailed and informative review of the new speedy. I’ve been saving for one for quite some time. I understand your recommendation to go with the Vintage crystal… I’m choosing to go with the sapphire sandwich mainly because I want to see the movement through the case back... Thanks again for the great review!
You are a very dangerous man, last time i watched your 38mm co-axial video i bought that watch, now that i've seen this one i bought this too :p Love the videos and can't wait to wear my 3861, i went for the sapphire this time cuz my 1861 was a hesalite
Advice from someone like you makes me so conflicted when I think I would enjoy the open case back so much.. The dial on this looks so freaking good but I worry that I would have regrets buying the hesalite. Ah idk
Long power reserves are just not required for 'normal' people with just one watch. That's just about everybody who buys a watch. Not the weird obsessive collector community. To wind my watch each morning takes precisiely 22 winds. To fully wind it takes 25 and then you reach the stop or tension point. Doing this each morning as I drink my first coffee is what I love about a manual wind piece. The relationship is cultivated and dependent and the relationship is forged. It becomes part of you. If I want a long power reserve I will get a quartz. :)
I purchased the last gen Speedy in October of 2020 and I sold it last month. This new version addresses all of my complaints regarding the bracelet, case back thickness and lackluster timekeeping. Looks like a winner.
I have the 2019 Moonwatch sapphire sandwich but I’m planning on selling it and getting a hesalite 3861. I have small wrists and it seems it will fit better. That and I like the new movement, and I think is time for some hesalite in my life 😊
Love that Omega brought the Co-Axial and the Si14 to the new Moonwatch. One day, I'll have to pick up the traditional Speedy. Great review as always! Is this a permanent new addition to your collection? ;)
Recently bought one of the last 1861 Hesalite Moonwatches. The new one looks nice, I like the better accuracy and lack of lug over-hang, still not sure about the narrowness of the clasp. Thinking of selling my Planet Ocean to buy one.
Love this watch. I agree with going with the Hesalite crystal; the Sapphire version has AR on both sides which, after time, generates hairline scratches which is really annoying (why not just add AR on the bottom like many other watch makers do?) Thanks for sharing this great historique watch ... hope to get one on my wrist one day 🤞🏼🙂
According to technical data, the sapphire version is only inside. The other versions like snoopy are the ones with double sided coating, if I remember it correctly. I definitely looked at the standard sapphire moonwatch and made sure it is only inside because i don't like outside AR coated watches due to that reason you have mentioned.
@@antoinetruchot1239 - AR is the Anti Reflective coating on the crystal/glass covering the dial. It helps with seeing the dial better when there is a light source reflecting on the dial.
@@atl3630 guess it's down to personal taste / enjoyment. To me the SMP300 especially in that blue dial is gorgeous and looks the part, esp if you're vain and like to impress non watch enthusiasts :-) the speedy is much more understated. I'm getting it next , though :-)
The Speedy was on my radar a while back but I ended up with an SM300M great white but that speedy itch carried on and on. A great classic manual wind watch is certainly worth saving for. Ideally take your time and have both at some point. You can't really compare an SM300 with the Speedy, different watches, totally different movements, different personalities I'm certain my purchase of my SM300 was the right choice with a Speedy in line to follow.
Great review, agree that the small changes add up to a very nice rendition. Some other RUclipsrs have complained about sharp case edges, does yours seem to have this?

Nice review and editing. Love the new deeper stepped dial and dot over 90 on the 3861 Speedy.
I want that caseback 😍. Congrats bud
Amazing video and review of the new speedmaster. Thank you!
Fantastic vid! The way you shot the lume makes it look soo dope. looking forward to the next one!
Thanks Phil! I've been playing with shooting dark and got that one just right 😎
Have seen many videos on this watch.
You know, I found out that the PR is actually closer to 60hr, just that it probably falls out of METAS so they don't count the last dozen😉
@@WatchCrunchOfficial and that just sealed the deal lol. I'll be stopping by the boutique. Thanks.
What do people like the best- the dial? The case? The bracelet?
Nope. It's that milky, vintage hesalite distortion.😋
Beautiful video, as always. A+ content and photography
Haha, Omega is on a roll in 2021 😉. The Milky Way watch
Bought mine today. Must have addition to my Omega collection 👍
Congrats! It's gonna be a classic 😎
Almost perfect, if they could double up the WR. Well written video, great job.
Love this Speedy. It’s an historic timepiece. I do prefer the sapphire glass.
I just got my hands on my very first Speedmaster, and let me tell you, I couldn't be happier with my choice of the sapphire crystal option.
I have updated and kept the old speedy. I now have 2. Nice review Thanks
Always good to have a backup speedy Joe 😉
Love your channel man ! Thanks for the video - excellent as always !
Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it bud 👍
This was my first Omega watch. No regrets here!
Thanks Tom, the new bracelet is wonderful for people with skinny wrists and just drape the wrist better. Good luck on your search 👍
Oh good info Johnny. Mine's running ok, but I am gonna double check right now ;)
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Since you're into Omega Speedmaster's, do take the time to read carefully through this thread:
omegaforums.net/threads/3861-movement-broken.120071/
The issue that affects my watch has affected a number of others, and is basically down to a design flaw in the bushing connecting the center wheel to the main plate.
Me commenting again…..This watch at 14mm is by far the best looking (side profile) thick watch I have ever seen. It looks like its 12mm on the wrist.
Yeah the bezel really helps to hide the thickness
Yes exactly! Brilliant design ...from the side you only notice the "shoulders" + the bezel and dome of the hesalite. Looks really good also Bec it's got soo many layers that you don't see in other watches.
Thanks for the lovely review. :) 2 thumbs up.
I think for the exact reasons that you mentioned in your summary- ie. the changes were quite incremental (except, perhaps, the movement) - I wouldn’t consider the new Speedmaster for now. Let’s see if that changes with time
Yeah it's hard to justify if you already have the previous gen. But it's a great day to get into the speedy pro for the first time!
Also great production quality!
Thanks Robert, appreciate ya!
Really liked your video. Articulate and informative. Glad you like your new Speedy.
The bracelet taper and the slimmer clasp makes a huge improvement on the wearability!
Totally, it's made the speedy pro finally comfortable on my wrist!
Great video and cinematography. I am in the market for a new 3861 sapphire sandwich early next year - as soon as I pay off my 911 I'll be going to my AD for this beauty.
3861 + 911 = lucky man
If he had to finance his 911 I'd say not so lucky or with all due respect clever. Depreciating assets should not be financed IMO.
Got this speedy on sapphire sandwich setup, loving it from day one. The bracelet is a big selling point for me.
It's a beautiful bracelet! Enjoy your new acquisition 😎👍
You sir, make an incredible video. 👍👍
I'm new to your videos. I like your moderate articulate style. You've sold me on the 3861. Keep up the good work.
Thank you 🙏
Thanks James! It's a beautiful watch. If you are looking for a nearly new hesalite version, hit me up. I need to move a few pieces 😉
Once again thank you very much
Bought the sapphire sandwich a month ago and love it so I just added a new blue dial red hand 57 as a buddy for it.
Congrats Paul!
Can't go wrong with either! That movement is beautiful 🤩
You are a very dangerous man, last time i watched your 38mm co-axial video i bought that watch, now that i've seen this one i bought this too :p
Love the videos and can't wait to wear my 3861, i went for the sapphire this time cuz my 1861 was a hesalite
Advice from someone like you makes me so conflicted when I think I would enjoy the open case back so much.. The dial on this looks so freaking good but I worry that I would have regrets buying the hesalite. Ah idk
Looking forward to having this in the future!!
She's a beaut!
Been waiting for this video!
Enjoy Rod!
Nice video dude. Good comments, visuals and music.
Cheers Mas!
Great video... You deserves more subscribers !
Thanks Sebastien! 👍
I like to wind my watch every day. I don't want an increase on a manual winder time. Thats half the joy!
You don't have to wind it to full each time 😉
Long power reserves are just not required for 'normal' people with just one watch. :)
Still an amazing watch with a wonderful movement.
Excellent vid on the Speedy! Just subbed 👍🏻
Awesome, welcome 😎
I purchased the last gen Speedy in October of 2020 and I sold it last month. This new version addresses all of my complaints regarding the bracelet, case back thickness and lackluster timekeeping. Looks like a winner.
Yep! It's nice that a company actually responds to our little complaints to evolve an icon. 👏👏 omega
Fantastic video, as always.
Appreciate that bud!
"A half centimeter thinner" lol!
This is the final Moonwatch! I can't take off the watch from my whrist.
It's amazing dude, enjoy the hell out of it 👍
It’ a very nice watch, happy to have one
Oh, you got it...that's awesome man!💪
Thanks dude! It's lovely 🥰
I have the 2019 Moonwatch sapphire sandwich but I’m planning on selling it and getting a hesalite 3861. I have small wrists and it seems it will fit better. That and I like the new movement, and I think is time for some hesalite in my life 😊
Super video. Picking up my one soon
Good review. It’s a winner. I’d still like to get the 1861 in Heselite to go Along side the 3861 Sapphire … that movement is too good to hide !
I wish they would do the display caseback on the hesalite! :)
Love that Omega brought the Co-Axial and the Si14 to the new Moonwatch. One day, I'll have to pick up the traditional Speedy. Great review as always! Is this a permanent new addition to your collection? ;)
One day when grand seiko makes a speedmaster, Kenneth will buy one 😋
@@WatchCrunchOfficial hahaha! I'm thoroughly enjoying the Speedy Racing!
Lovely choice brotha 😎
Recently bought one of the last 1861 Hesalite Moonwatches. The new one looks nice, I like the better accuracy and lack of lug over-hang, still not sure about the narrowness of the clasp. Thinking of selling my Planet Ocean to buy one.
Goodness that speedmaster is out of this world.
It is pure lunacy ;)
Great review 👍🏼
Thank you! Wish I knew italian to listen to yours :)
It's funny you mentioned DOGECOIN LOL.. I'm using my Dogecoin to buy a new Speedmaster pro. Great video!! Omega Speedmaster is my grail watch.
Haha, I'm glad you at least got out of doge with a watch 😉
Love this watch. I agree with going with the Hesalite crystal; the Sapphire version has AR on both sides which, after time, generates hairline scratches which is really annoying (why not just add AR on the bottom like many other watch makers do?)
Thanks for sharing this great historique watch ... hope to get one on my wrist one day 🤞🏼🙂
Ooo that's not a good look for a 10k watch! You won't be disappointed Frank when you finally try one on.
According to technical data, the sapphire version is only inside. The other versions like snoopy are the ones with double sided coating, if I remember it correctly. I definitely looked at the standard sapphire moonwatch and made sure it is only inside because i don't like outside AR coated watches due to that reason you have mentioned.
I’m new into the moonwatch hype, what is AR ?
@@antoinetruchot1239 - AR is the Anti Reflective coating on the crystal/glass covering the dial. It helps with seeing the dial better when there is a light source reflecting on the dial.
@@FrankLavoy thanks !
I tried one on 2 days ago in an AD. I can’t stop thinking about it
It's soooo good 😁👍
Damn, your vid really makes me question my decision of choosing SMP300 over Moonwatch!
Well, you have a new watch to save towards. Probably have 2.5 decades to do that😉
Nah, SMP300 is better
Nice review. I’m sold on this one. Sapphire caseback though.
Same, such a great movement that I want to see it. Also not going to buy the same watch twice.
@@attila2246 I totally get that. Are you going to sell your “non sandwich” version first?
Beatiful video shots.
Thanks Poi, you rock 👊
Awesome review! Thank you
Great video!
Thanks Jon 😁
Great review, agree that the small changes add up to a very nice rendition. Some other RUclipsrs have complained about sharp case edges, does yours seem to have this?
Haven't noticed that in the month I've had it 😁
