The Speedmaster Moon watch is the definition of 'grail watch'. It truly has everything. It has the history, the desire, the prestige, the build quality, the looks and the brand. Not many watches can actually say that. Great video.

Treated myself to this exact version of the new Speedy for my 50th birthday in 2021, and I'm still in love with it a year later. Considering selling lots of watches from my collection because they just don't get wrist time anymore with this beauty hardly ever getting put in the box.

I just got my SS on bracelet on 10.7.23 and I am very pleased with it. I have wanted a "Moonwatch" since the 70's and it looks like my timing is excellent. The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. I am very pleased. It set me back USD 8,000 and is a tremendous value. Oh, yeah did I say it is beautiful. A classy, humble beautiful.

Great vid as usual RJ! I think Omega nailed this one. There are so many subtle changes and yet almost everyone can be seen as an upgrade. The watch now feels more in line with luxury pricing but it's still that classic moonwatch. The 3861 is a MASSIVE upgrade.

Bought the sapphire sandwich version back in August. Lovely watch and yes a great icon. The Master Chronometer certification and the addition of hacking really sold it for me. To make it an even better flight watch, I wouldn't mind if they would add a fly-back version. Appreciate your assessment, especially since it is from a Speedmaster aficionado.

Great review! The new dial and bracelet have only made this watch even better than it was. I couldn’t go back to the big chunky bracelet after trying this one. 99% of watches out there have horrible chunky bracelets and clasps so it’s been great to see omega release a more elegant and comfortable version. It also looks more like the original. This is the best speedmaster yet. The only downside is the 50 meters water resistance as you mentioned. But they would have to add screw down crown and chronograph pushers to increase this and that would take away from the looks. So I’m my opinion this is the perfect moonwatch. Go try one on!

Great video. Completely agree; the 3861 hesalite is pretty much perfect. No need for a crazy big box (the travel case is awesome). Why I don’t think it’s perfect? My only complaint about mine is the case and bracelet edge finishing is simply not as smooth as on my Rolex (Sub and Exp II Polar) or my other watches. It’s just not as well finished. That’s why for me it’s not a 10/10 watch. But other than that, it’s a cracker, just needs to share wrist time with the others in my collection. Variety is the spice of life!

People forget that Omega test their watches to the ACTUAL water resistance 😎 so when it says 50m it means they have actually been tested at that depth and pressure and were fine… unlike most watches that say 50m and are really just splash resistant. So really the watch is fine for being submerged

I work at a wealth management firm in Atlanta. The fact we have clients with 10s of millions in equities and this is the watch of choice for many of them says a lot. A Patek is pocket change for them but the Speedy is their choice still. It truly is the only watch to own in your life if you want.

Fair and balanced review from a man who knows his chops! Nice one. I think the watch is fantastic and I own the same version. Undoubtedly one of the 'great' watches. I think it's reasonably priced and the customer experience from Omega and their retailers is very good. There are so few great watches that are genuine all rounders that can be worn in most situations and this is one of only a handful. Ok, not diving, but fine for swimming. Positives are for me a beautiful, refined, practical, effective design - so easy to read - and great feel in operation. Classic never goes out of fashion. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Omega have handled the evolution of Speedy design better than Rolex have either the Daytona or Sub.
Aesthetic negatives for me are (to my eyes) a slight over-taper to the bracelet (20-16/17mm, better?) and slightly less elegant (shorter) lugs compared to previous. Picking nits. In terms of construction and quality, I think the watch is excellent. I do feel the case/bracelet edge radius should be softened (this is a criticism of many modern Omegas). But it's not a problem to wear (and will soften with wear), just not the tactile pleasure it could be to handle off the wrist!

I have the sapphire version of the Speedmaster Mark II with the 861a movement. I bought it new from an Omega dealer in 1974. I get it serviced and adjusted about every 4 to 5 years at an Omega authorized service place. This watch is keeping an average of about +2 to +6 seconds per day. Sometimes it runs a bit slower or faster depending on my activities while wearing it. I've thought about getting the newer version of this watch. I found if my watch starts to run a bit fast I then demagnetize it, and then it runs at normal speed. I am sure it is my cell phone that tends to magnetize this watch. I am careful to not take this watch in to water.

I don't know who is going deeper underwater than 164 feet, but there are other watches for that. 50m is just fine. My Blue Side of the 🌚 Aventurine Moonphase is rated at 50m and it's been totally fine for heavy rain, hand washing, and being fully immersed in water (strap held up perfectly well). I grew up punishing a Casio that had zero WR rating. Wore it to the beach, in the water, in the pool, etc etc. It was totally fine. "Concerns" over the WR rating are manufactured drama.

Nice summary, RJ. I think the latest 3861 Moonwatch is the best yet. And I actually like the smaller box. Who loupes their Speedy and actually wears them on the velcro straps *wink*? I think the only downside is the significant price increase (or difference) when compared to the previous generation 1861. It's not the bargain it used to be but in its price range, no other chronograph can compete in terms of heritage and overall quality.

I have a Speedmaster made in 1969, the first reference with the caliber 861. I also have several other (younger) chronographs of different brands, and the Speedy has been more reliable than all my other chronographs. If you rotate between a few watches in your collection, you can service it only once every decade or so, and the watch will easily outlive the owner.
A vintage Speedy has only one weakness, and that is the lack of water resistance. Other than that, it's an everyday watch. I use mine regularly.

On the very edge of ordering this one. I’ve wanted a Speedmaster for decades and it is my most anticipated watch. Ultimately I teetered between this and the sapphire. I prefer this in 90% of ways. The only lingering doubt is about hesalite gouges. Light swirls and scratches that I can polywatch out don’t phase me. I almost look forward to giving it love. The only thing is I’m not sure what it takes to gouge it. I take very good care of my stuff, so it won’t be abused it’s just that on the car ride home tonight the seatbuckle flew up and swiped my Tudor’s sapphire and it made me wonder if that would have potentially had me worried this time next week with the Speedy. I’m not lacking the stomach for hesalite, it’s just this is my favourite review of this watch and I want to hear it from you.

Nicely done, thank you for posting the video. Of course one can say that they sapphire version is not entirely faithful to the original. So I wonder when Omega is going to do a hesalite crystal version with a stepped dial that has also an applied logo. Would that be that hard?
Anyway the watch needs no introduction as it is so rich of history. But since Omega has produced the famous 321 movement again I guess they could also case that movement in such a steel case, with a stepped dial, dot over 90, hesalite crystal and applied logo, then you would have the closest to the original as possible.
One more thing, don't you think that now that the 321 movement is again into production, the 861 has actually become the most rare of all? After all it was only produced for a couple of years, from 1968/9 until 1971/2.

Just got the Hesalite version. I love it, but I am not as big a fan of the bracelet as I thought I would be. In my opinion it tapers more than it should, almost appearing dainty on the wrist. Due to the small size of the clasp it is difficult to take on and off when sized for my 7 3/8 inch wrist- it just doesn’t open quite enough. It also needs at least one more micro adjust position. I am a fan of the smaller links, but it makes sizing adjustment difficult for me, I found that the micro adjust spacing was just about equal to adding/removing a link. Other than those details it is fantastic. Since there is no polish on the bracelet it is quickly becoming my durable everyday piece. I also miss viewing the movement because of the closed case back- perhaps Omega should make a sapphire exhibition back available for purchase…

As I live in a hot country where I go to the beach very often, I was wondering how often would I be able to wear my speedy. Honestly, I tend to be quite careless with my watches as sports watches are - to me - meant to be worn in all types of context. I will apply the same rule to my Speedy, and I hope I won't regret it.
I am adding that I decided to go for this model with the aim to become a "one-watch guy" (which I am very far from), so I really expect it to tick all the cases.

Have you experienced the stoppage problem? Apparently it's due to one of the bushings not being made out of correct material.
The new ones from end of 2021 and 2022 should have the new bushing installed from the factory.
If you don't use the chronograph often you probably won't notice it, as it usually stops after 20+ minutes of running the chrono

Omega already did a re-edition of the 2915 in steel in 2017. Putting a caliber 321 in that same watch would not sit well with owners of that watch for sure. I agree with you about the size of the lettering on the dial. Indeed, one of the beauties of the non-Professional dials, eg, FOiS, is the amount of space around the small-scale text and the contrast it has with the black dial. We don’t want to stray into R***x territory, do we? Furthermore, I think it’s a shame that OMEGA indulges in the sort of up-selling which the car manufacturers use. Every customer sees a “must-have” feature for which they would pay a bit extra, such as the sapphire case back, but why deprive those wanting to stay close to the “original” of the bigger box, tools, etc. I too prefer the brushed bracelet and Hesalite appearance. Surely, in 202x, OMEGA can find a way of not linking all these things in packages. Having said all that, such a well-specified watch as this will suit a lot of people perfectly and it’s a big step up from the 1861 model before it.

Mine stopped working within one year with the dreaded 58 second curse (fully wound with chronograph function engaged). Apparently it’s a common issue with several owners of this timepiece with the new movement. I’ve heard even brand new Daytonas have the same issue. My only rebuttal of that argument is that the Daytonas use an older movement whereas the new 3861 is graded as being “Master Chronometer.” Of course I got it repaired for free via Omega and it has been keeping accurate time now thankfully.

Hi, no, mine didn't pick-up a lot of scratches. I do have some older ones that clearly show some hairline scratches. In the end, I have the crystals replaced during service anyway. I picked the Hesalite version because it's closest to the original Moonwatch, and because I already have the Moonshine version with display back showing the 3861.

Hesalite, you can now get super thin 0.1mm self healing TPU films that are virtually invisible to the naked eye. And they don't affect the beautiful opacity of the hesalite at all.
The curvature of the hesalite is a delight as well.
The solid caseback is a plus for me. Clear casebacks are a novelty you look at initially. After a week or so, you'll be busy wiping smudges off the back crystal 😁

Not sure why people complain about the Speedy Professional’s water resistance. I would be curious to know just how many people swim that deeply anyway. I would wager the majority hardly swim 10 feet or under. Remember the Speedy was made for racing (on land) and later used in space because it was accurate and robust. I applaud Omega for keeping the Speedmaster close to its original purpose. For those who want higher water resistance, Omega makes some great diver watches. My only complaint with Speedmaster is that it doesn’t have an adjustable clasp. That would have brought it closer to perfection. I’m enjoying my Speedy 3861 with sapphire. And to those who complain about so the called milky ring: it’s actually moonlight. Those sly Omega engineers. Lol
