It doesn't make sense in buying a pre-owned speedmaster at this point. Everything I have found is from 20+ years ago and is selling for the mid 4,000 price range with no box/papers and scratched, etc. Better to just get a new one I feel like. Especially if buying the new hesalite version with a small discount negotiated through an AD.
There are still beautiful 861’s out there with tritium dial in mint condition box and papers. I got my 3590.50 for 3.300 eur three yrs ago now it worth around 5k still I think it is a much better deal to get one instead of the new. Same looking bracelet and the yelloe markers are just awsome.
@@gyulapanszky7805 I think the fact that you said your 3590.50 is worth 5,000 kind of solidifies my point of used pieces skyrocketing in price recently which makes purchasing a new one much more appealing.....just my opinion of course.
Just got mine this week from a special event. General Tom Stafford was present, answered questions and told stories and then signed boxes. Honored to have a box signed by the General.
Yup ... this is my Grail watch for sure. Love the design, love the history and love the versatility b/c it can be worn casual/everyday and formal wear. Thanks for sharing.
Seeing this makes me love my 1968 speedmaster even more. My dad bought it on December 26th, 1968. I know because I have the box and receipt! He paid $175 at a jewelry store in Sayerville, NJ. When my dad passed away in 2000, I became the keeper of this amazing watch. I still wear it on a regular basis. The 321 movement runs flawlessly.
@@alextee7853 I had it serviced once in 2001. I don't think my dad ever serviced it between 1969-2000. I have taken it to an Omega store a few times in the past 10 years and a quick test showed the amplitude was well within spec. I may get one more service on it in the future.
@@craigbehnke1986 Thanks for the response. Wow that's amazing! Makes me more comfortable and leaning towards getting a speedmaster. Now just debating between Hesalite and Sapphire haha
As a gen Speedmaster owner, I often look at other chrono watches like Tag, Rolex, IWC. And every time again, after a few minutes I look at my Speedy and just go 'nah' over the others. Nothing compares.
A watch that will transcend time. A watch a father can pass down for generations. Got mine 3 days ago and this will be a keeper for my life time and perhaps my son or daughter.
I am happy I bought my Speedy for just under 3k€ in 2014. Not grey or used - new at an Omega AD. As great as these improvements may be… it has gotten very expensive.
I bought the out going model (1861) 2 months ago. An absolute dream. Over the new one I prefer the more authentic movement which ties closer to the history, prefer the dial not looking so grainy (once seen I can spot the new model a mile away) and prefer the font placement on the dail. It not costing an extra £1000 was a bonus.
My 2005 moon watch has never been serviced, polished or restored, and keeping accurate time! I don’t baby it at all, it has dings, and scratches all over and I love it!
3861 has been on my wrist for the past 3 months - incredibly comfortable watch to wear. An amazing piece of history on your wrist as well, I literally have no complaints!
Just picked up one with 10% discount! This thing is like jewelry now with amazing finish and all. I don't understand why the internet is complaining about the 'sharp' edges. It's called precision and most people just have to think straight on why the have that finish.
I have one I bought in Japan. It was a display watch.Cost around 2.5k back in 2014. A great discount! This narrator is the best that I have heard on RUclips. Does the watch justice!
DISCLAIMER: I purchased my 1st Moon watch today. I compared the 1863 (1861 with the display bits) and the new 3861. It was not an easy decision to make at all. I think I was irritating the AD for quite some time before the pro's and cons for each version were compared and carefully contrasted and ultimately resulted in a draw even with the thousand pound price differential. I was pondering the 1861 and getting the new bracelet as that was the biggest stand out feature with the improved taper. More thoughts popped into my head including the 1861 big box of toys, extra straps, strap tool (I'm unlikely to take off the bracelet) and a medallion if I recall correctly. Unfortunately this box excluded the moon probably due to cost savings somewhere along the line. Ultimately the box with extras would end up in the loft unlikely to be looked at again unless I move house. I ended up with the new 3861 by a whisker, the bracelet is brilliant and is unlikely to be swapped out for something else. I also checked for any 'hot spots' on the case or bracelet and didn't fine any difference on the wrist as some have found circulating within the Madmos interweb. Yes I would have liked the column wheel but the tactile feeling of this cam version feels very close to it. I was just a tad concerned about grafting the coaxial escapement to the 1861 but considering Omega already successfully did this with the Valjoux 7753 on chronograph automatics for a very long time with the 3330 movement if I recall back in the day hopefully I need not worry. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I'm actually over the moon with it.
@@Damage_Inc But don't the tools help you adjust the size of the bracelet by removing/adding links? Otherwise you have to take it somewhere to do that.
@@jackwilson5542 No, there's only bracelet removal tool provided and You need a very good properly sized screwdriver to remove the individual links. Besides, this procedure involves heating of the bracelet to loosen Loctite stuff, preventing link screws from undoing themselves - if You're not into modelling or fine mechanics - this procedure is not for the faint-hearted, especially if the watch is new. I was a bit scared to do it myself, but all went OK. I was much more self-confident when I did this later to my Seamaster :) Proper screwdriver, whose blade fully fills the screw slot + propane burner to heat the link locally, gloves and Loctite for fine mechanics for screw it back. Or even better, take it to reliable watch service. But they should know this loctite trick, otherwise it might go sideways.
@@MrSysadmin1975 I sized my new 3861 Speedy bracelet myself. I do have a proper set of watchmakers screwdrivers, and all it took to loosen the screws was to run the bracelet under very hot water for a couple of minutes. Just remember, slow and steady wins the race!
Just tried the sapphire and hesalite. the size is realllly nice. Nothing gigantic like the seasmaster. Oh and the stainless bracelet is 19.5 mm 😍 This piece really feels nice and perfect. Question of the century remains…sapphire for survival of daily use or hesalite for originality?
I've been hoping you'd review the new Moonwatch. It's my first high-end watch purchase. I love it. It's better than I expected. Just perfect. I bought my Speedmaster in Germany in the spring of 1967, well before the moon landing. With the 321 movement and straight non-beveled lugs, it remind me of better days.
The Rolex Daytona back story described as pulp fiction is apropos on a few levels. They do command the exponentially higher price for different reasons, much like how the movie "Pulp Fiction" entertained us and commanded over $200 million worldwide, whilst the documentary "Apollo 11," even with all of its original footage and international film accolades, only saw around $20 million worldwide. The Daytona is the "Indie" blockbuster, and the Speedmaster is the critically acclaimed documentary. Personally, I really like a good documentary.
When the 3861 came out every discontinued 1861 and 861 received a minimum of 30% value increase and I myself owner of a 2014 1861 (last model with small red box) this put a big smile on my face
I got a new 1861 hessalite in 2017 with a 20% discount for £2933 so as mentioned in the video “an absolute steal!” The new model has some nice upgrades but another way to look at it is it’s a little further from the 60’s original too. I love my speedy and it always gets regular wrist time.
If I may add, only Omega still ships both the old and new generations of such an iconic brand at the same time, any other brand (you know who😉) get ready for crazy grey and used market premiums!!
@@neilbraun11 I meant it would be easy for them to sell just the new (and more expensive) version of the speedmaster. Which would then drive up prices of the older version in grey and used market (as they have now become collectibles, limited supply and all). This happens regularly with Rolex watches, the grey market premiums on even their existing watches go through the roof once “rumours” of an existing model being discontinued hit the market (think hulk, explorer 39, explorer 2 all in the last 2 years). Yet Omega always keeps their watches attainable and there’s almost no secrecy about their supply situation. Here too, they are selling this extremely iconic watch in both it’s iterations and will phase out the model slowly. They do the same with every family of watches. As an enthusiast and a follower of watches, they have my respect for that. It may make them less alluring to some people, but I’m not one of them. Sorry for the long reply. Didn’t want to be misunderstood 🙂

Correction: the bracelet on the 3861 is reminiscent of the Ref. 145.022-69 '1969 Apollo XI' Yellow Gold LE, and NOT the original Speedy Pro bracelet, which was a flat link.
The comment about 'Fire' hilarious. I have the FOiS, I enjoy explaining the reason why my watch face doesn't have the word 'Professional.' My education emphasized return to the source and every glance I look at the time I am marveled by this history.
I'm considering a Speedmaster seriously. However, it will be a vintage one. I cannot justify the new price for what amounts to little or no new soul being added. It was already a perfect watch. Barring my 561 Constellation, which IS a perfect watch.
Purchsed my speedmaster 20+ years ago and it was my first luxury watch!! Still my favorite after all these years. Not sure if its because it was the first or becuase its so damn awesome!!
I tried the last one on and the bracelet was just too bulky for me. This came out and it solved all my issues, while also looking way better imo. But I just can't justify that kind of money for a speedy, it's gone into another price bracket now for a lot of people. Such a shame...
Check out the 3590.50 from the early 90s or a late 80s 145.022. Those commonly came on the 1479 bracelet, which is basically identical to this new one but vintage and with a clasp that has 6 micro adjustment points. Something that the new one, bizarrely, lacks. You can get one with some lovely tritium patina at a very reasonable price.
@@liquidtunes Not so different of a service interval vs a modern Speedmaster! Figure about 7 years but many people stretch far beyond that. The 861 movement is super robust and was basically unchanged from the late 60s onward. Even the 1861 update in the mid 1990s was minimal. so you can find lots of expert independent shops that will do a killer job vs sending it to Omega who will replace original parts like the hands with non matching modern ones
sine you mentioned a bunch of other Brands@7:35 . i'd take the MoonWatch over all other Brands (including Daytona) in a heartbeat. great review. thank you.
I bought a 3861 sapphire sandwich a few weeks ago and I am absolutely in love. The new links are amazing and look like white gold. You can either have a watch that's been to the moon, or a Rolex that's been with the fishes in the sea. I know which I'm choosing.
Great watch, and I love it. Though people should be aware that the 3861 movement has teething problems. The chronograph function on my 4 months old hesalite has started acting up (stops at 58 seconds, which also stops the running second and the watch altogether). Did a bit of research and it's not an uncommon ocurrence for people who use the chrono function frequently. Dropped it yesterday at the Omega shop, who told me I should have it back in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that they fix the issue permanently.
@@liquidtunes Omega fixed the issue at no charge, since the watch was under warranty. It took them about 1 month. The great thing is they gave me an access code to their service system, where I could see the status of the repair work. Their service was faultless.
@@liquidtunes I am predominantly a Rolex guy for the past 20 years, but I have to say that my experience with Omega is far superior than with Rolex lately. Firstly, you can actually buy most watches from Omega's dealership, and (at least in HK), they are incredibly nice and commercially minded (as opposed to the smugness / contempt you get in most Rolex dealerships). And the service was very quick, as opposed to the months of backlog one would experience if servicing a watch at the Rolex SC.
@@johnnyguitar6697 Great to hear your comparative experiences. I don't appreciate having to play AD games and wait months for a service if I'm spending that much money, let alone at any price bracket. I had one off putting experience at an Omega boutique here in Dubai where the staff could have been hired from Rolex (hah) and a different more positive one at another boutique where even though the chap was new, was pleasantly forthcoming and helpful. Been mulling my first big boy watch so hearing about people's experiences helps. Thank you!
With the 3861 movement, the updated taper bracelet, and thinner case, there really is no other watch in this price range that can compete with the Speedmaster in terms of history and capability (except on water resistance lol).
"My only complaint; you can't get the Hesalite front with the sapphire back" I hear you, but I feel if you are going for the Hesalite version, you do so because you want something to closely represent the original watch.
Love the Singer reference. Fantastic cars. The very best version of the 911 imo. Fortunate enough to drive one of the earlier ones and... it keeps me up at night
These macro shots makes this watch looks much nicer than in real. e.g. The step dial, the depth, the legibility is more pronounced in these macro shots. And when I go to my local AD, I am thinking to myself, is this really the same watch. Still a very nice watch and may be I will get it some day, but it looks much sharper in these videos.
So well said. I have four speedmasters including the venerable Snoopy aswell as the sapphire sandwich, and love them all. This is just the best watch for me. I hope everyone who sees this, has the opportunity to own a Speedmaster. You just cannot go wrong.
You simply cannot get a chronograph like this anywhere in the world at this ridiculously low price - it’s still massively underpriced and to think even Seiko yes SEIKO is charging more !!! Prices will be only going up for Omega Speedmasters, £5k for a hesalite 3861 is just giving them away. Did I mention also it’s 15,000 Gauss antimagnetic and a Master Chronometer too, stepped dial is back after decades, amazing bracelet, dot over 90, tachymetre, curved minute hand and oh it was worn on the moon the biggest adventure in mankind’s history - £5k seriously is amazing and unlike other brands silly prices puts it into perspective just how much of an icon the speedmaster is.
Bought the sapphire sandwich last week. It everything I thought it would be. An amazing watch suitable for any occasion. Don’t think I need another watch!
I always enjoy these videos. The camera work, lighting, and editing are much appreciated. But this one gets extra points for an excellent script as well. Some splendid comedy written in here. Oh - the watch is great too, of course.
Why do these companies believe only their divers deserve quick adjust clasps. Would be nice to see the seamaster clasp tech hiding underneath that new clasp

I’m waiting for the new clasp with a micro adjustment on to come out and then I’m going to pull the trigger. This update is excellent. I’ve tried it on a few times now and it’s been improved everywhere especially the fit. It feels like a 40mm watch now and the quality is definitely up another notch. You don’t really need a micro adjustment as the bracelet is so comfortable but apparently theirs one coming so I will wait and see.
I do prefer the 1861 hesalite. That flatter grey dial really makes the bright white hands pop.. Also love the more busy mili seconds track... and mine is on straps anyway, so I don't see the new bracelet as a factor.... and the movement was used in space for years.... The price is great too. I first saw the moonwatch in Singapore airport in 2015. I talked to the salesman about the different versions and it stuck in my mind ever since. I finally bought my speedy pro sapphire sandwich in 2020 and I love it.
Bought it 3 days ago. It Is a materpiece! and have to say that new braclet is super comfortable.
I purchased one last week and I can’t stop looking at it…. I want the Pelagios fxd next but I can’t find it.

I come to your channel not only to see the amazing combination of art and mechanics. But also to listen your soothing voice while you explain the art and the mechanics. 😊
Should see some used ones for the new version in 2022.
@@j5daniel182 based on the current market, I would imagine at nearly new prices, but time will tell I suppose
@@Pianoman1488 yep, tough decision...
Just got mine this week from a special event. General Tom Stafford was present, answered questions and told stories and then signed boxes. Honored to have a box signed by the General.
The justification for the price hike is the same reason for Ferrari pricing. You want it, therefore it is this price.
Seiko have done the same.
Supply and demand lol
not to be negative but pricing in high quality products as ferrari gucci omega, is far from “just because i can”
This is the same for everything else btw
Yup ... this is my Grail watch for sure.
The 321 movement runs flawlessly.
wow 1000 bucks for an omega full set is a take
That's crazy ! How often / how many times have you gotten it serviced?
@@alextee7853 I had it serviced once in 2001. I don't think my dad ever serviced it between 1969-2000. I have taken it to an Omega store a few times in the past 10 years and a quick test showed the amplitude was well within spec. I may get one more service on it in the future.
@@craigbehnke1986 Thanks for the response. Wow that's amazing! Makes me more comfortable and leaning towards getting a speedmaster. Now just debating between Hesalite and Sapphire haha
I got the hesalite version back in March and its fantastic, its the crown jewel of my collection.
As a gen Speedmaster owner, I often look at other chrono watches like Tag, Rolex, IWC. And every time again, after a few minutes I look at my Speedy and just go 'nah' over the others. Nothing compares.
Between the Speedmaster and the Carrera line-ups I find these watches to be my favorites overall.
Loved the Singer Porsche reference 😊😊
(He just talked about 911s again, this keeps getting better and better)
Quote of the day "A watch every enthusiastic should own!" - well said Mr. Man-with-no-face.
This is how you do a watch content channel. Every single upload is fantastic!
And yes! Everyone needs a Speedmaster! 😍🙌
Apparently a few of the 3861 movements are having problems.
Bought one of these last month. It's so subdued and only catches the eye of those who know it's deep understanding.
I pick my new moonwatch up this week!!!!! So glad of the timing of this video, it got me all excited for the pickup lol. Love the channel!!!
As a Tailor the "Singer " references applied to me twice! Still a great looking time piece.
I’m seriously missing a video about the Speedmaster 321…
That would be really awesome 🤩
I could listen to this guy talking about movements all day long. You seriously should start a podcast talking about watching.
There are watches and then there is Speedmaster
Hey, at least you're self aware lol.
3861 is by far the better option than others for people who have tried and compared.
I've been hoping you'd review the new Moonwatch. It's my first high-end watch purchase. I love it. It's better than I expected. Just perfect. I wear it every day and wonder if there is another watch with the history and cachet (that I can afford) that could ever take its place on my wrist. BTW, I absolutely love your channel.
The different between Rolex and Omega? You don't see Rolex comparing it's self to Omega
@@AJ-bi6ns ya probably not a good look for Rolex to mention their higher quality competitor
Love my 3861 Hesalite :) :) Best Moonwatch I've owned yet :) :)
Actually the case, crown, pushers, hands, dial, bezel and bracelet are closer to the 105.012 than anything on this side of the 145.012.
If I may add, only Omega still ships both the old and new generations of such an iconic brand at the same time, any other brand (you know who😉) get ready for crazy grey and used market premiums!!
What are you trying to say?
@@fahadkhan-db6bh yeah, I agree. I prefer it this way as well. Telling me I can't have something because I dont irresponsibly throw money around just makes me shake my head and walk away. I couldn't imagine doing this to my customers. People say...well, you dont understand the luxury market. Yeah, no I get it. Its just a game for show offs who buy watches for different reasons. This new idea that they are investments is just a joke. The inflationary prices of Rolex and some higher end brands will be adjusted as quickly as they went up as soon as these "investors" see the market crash and need capital to stay afloat

I am one of the 40%. You have excellent content. All well narrated and filming is magnificent. Keep up the good work. 😊 My father has the original 1960s Speedmaster. It is in very bad shape with original strap long gone. I would love to get it restored. My father says when he got it serviced years ago, the jeweller swapped movement for a fake inferior movement, but he is not really sure. Yet as it is, it keeps excellent time and stopwatch works perfectly.
I've had my eye on this watch for a very long time. I don't believe that I can pass on the opportunity this time. Thank-you for your informative video.
“Rolex, don’t make me laugh” 🤣👌
Correction: the bracelet on the 3861 is reminiscent of the Ref. 145.022-69 '1969 Apollo XI' Yellow Gold LE, and NOT the original Speedy Pro bracelet, which was a flat link.
Just think I bought mine about 12 years ago for just £2500 seemed expensive back then now it’s a ultra bargain
How much? Seems a massive price.
Bought a new FOIS 2 years ago for £2800. (20 % discount)
The comment about 'Fire' hilarious. I have the FOiS, I enjoy explaining the reason why my watch face doesn't have the word 'Professional.' My education emphasized return to the source and every glance I look at the time I am marveled by this history.
What about El Primero? History, revolutionary tech and choice of designs
This is why I love Omega watches
I'm considering a Speedmaster seriously. However, it will be a vintage one. I cannot justify the new price for what amounts to little or no new soul being added. It was already a perfect watch. Barring my 561 Constellation, which IS a perfect watch.
I highly recommend the reduced ;)
Purchsed my speedmaster 20+ years ago and it was my first luxury watch!! Still my favorite after all these years. Not sure if its because it was the first or becuase its so damn awesome!!
If there were Oscar awards for these type of RUclips videos, you won over and over.
I've got one of these, I love it. I have it on a grey-bordered black NATO and it looks amazing.
I recently bought the 1821 and love it, although that darned haselite crystal is prone to scratches (they polish out easily, though).
You know this is a treat when you like the video before watching :)
The mark up to keep the brand relevant compared to the competition has begun.
Facts
@@DeanoTXR53 Good share Deano, very helpful. I've not bought a pre owned watch before: how often should those models be serviced?
@@liquidtunes Not so different of a service interval vs a modern Speedmaster! Figure about 7 years but many people stretch far beyond that. The 861 movement is super robust and was basically unchanged from the late 60s onward. Even the 1861 update in the mid 1990s was minimal. so you can find lots of expert independent shops that will do a killer job vs sending it to Omega who will replace original parts like the hands with non matching modern ones

Thanks for sharing. Update?
@@liquidtunes Omega fixed the issue at no charge, since the watch was under warranty. It took them about 1 month. The great thing is they gave me an access code to their service system, where I could see the status of the repair work. Their service was faultless.
@@johnnyguitar6697 Very encouraging to hear and happy that you received good service from them.
I thought the bracelet taper was to aggressive for a large wrist. In general the bracelet felt cheap. It does look great on the wrist..
The Ultimate iconic timepiece.
"My only complaint; you can't get the Hesalite front with the sapphire back"
I hear you, but I feel if you are going for the Hesalite version, you do so because you want something to closely represent the original watch.

Would like to hear see the Tudor. Prince oysterdate ,I bought mine in 1976 and it’s still my favourite.
The Omega Speedmaster has a nice classic design.
I am so happy that i bought the "old" 1861 Speedy for 5,5k€. They now sell the new 3861 for 7,5k€ which is insane imo. (bought the sapphire sandwich)

Maybe the a384 won't jam as much as it's a simpler Chrono. Mine's got triple calendar+ moonphase. So maybe it's a bit more complicated...
