      Trying to introduce new people into destiny is extremely difficult, especially story wise. Oh yeah that stuff happened, buts it’s gone now so you’ll need to watch lore videos. The current story? Well you’ll need to go back a couple seasons, you had to be there. These new features? Yeah they were added a while ago and aren’t explained at all anymore, gotta look up the tutorial for them. Oh the content itself? Except for the bits where the performance boost from deleting all that stuff disappeared six months into Beyond Light's year, the game is suffering a reward processing bug (induced by content bloat lmao) that has been progressively getting worse since Witch Queen-all six raids are affected by it, as are a number of quests (if you find you can't progress an activity for seemingly no reason, go back and collect all the Glimmer the enemies dropped; that's this bug at work)-and of course that all of this is necessary because Bungie decided to run a game for seven years on an engine that can only handle two, which is the other biggest reason I have such a bone to pick with the DCV. first off savathun is a queen of deception. You cant trust anything she was saying or doing. no one knew she was ressurected. From the guardians perspective, she stole the light and was using it to manipulate the traveler, pulling it to mars in that web she weaved, to lock it away and bring about darkness to us. Turns out, she used uldren sov as an experiment, saw how he got "chosen", did the whole "Devotion=bravery" thing as a last gamble after masquerading as Osiris for years in the tower, became a light bearer, lost her memories, we got her her memories back due to the time dilations/psychic shit going on in mars, and she used that knowledge with her new found powers to fulfill her original plan, which was to hide the traveler from the witness to prevent it from taking it over and plunging the universe in permanent darkness, because she simply got tired of the dark, and her worm, and all the things that entailed. Either way, we may have had the same end goal of stopping the witness, but she was trying to do it by locking away the traveler, so we had to stop her. Its not that she was trying to help us. She was just trying to stop the witness, in her own way, but the end doesnt justify the means, so we saved the traveler and are going about this another way. Eramis tried to destroy the traveler to, for different reasons, it still wouldve had the same goal of stopping the witness indirectly. Most of destiny 2 lore is a complete mess, but dont look past the one actual narrative they were able to flesh out because of it.

Because unlike the point commonly brought up "new stuff better, old stuff become trash" there's certain guns that don't get that treatment and are evergreen(always good or have been for a long time). But you can't get those guns that are still overpowered because you "had to be there" at a time where nearly nobody cared about the game. I don't know if those 1st and 2nd dlc/season guns are still broken (they were still OP when beyond light came out) because i haven't touched the game since then.

      Same here man. I've been looking for that "one MMO to rule them all" for more than a decade at this point.
      To add to your points, one of the worst parts about Destiny imo is that it's *not* an MMO or at least, it chooses not to learn from MMOs. good MMOs rarely have actual *playable* content locked behind a paywalls because the case where you want to play something with a friend but your friend doesn't own some required full-priced dlc is super unfortunate.
      Another way MMOs are more player-friendly in that they generally employ some sort of power-level rescaling so that most players can enjoy most of the content because again, the event that you're a returning player who just wants to get a taste of the new content but can't do any of that because newer enemies straight up just one-hit you and are completely immune to your attacks is also super unfortunate. Even super obscure and practically dead MMO shooters like Defiance have/had these things.

One friend laughed sheepishly and told me "Try the base game for a week and then ask again." I tried it for a week, realized that I effectively had what you could compare to the old Smash Bros Brawl demos of older titles, and decided that if I wanted to truly invest my time and effort in Destiny, it would take a small fortune of time, effort, and money. Had I gotten into the game upon its initial release, I would be more willing to throw money this game's way, but as it stands and will continue to stand I will never drop a red cent on it.
    I remember being so confused when the game went "By the way, Cayde-6 left you a present in the old Earth ruins" and I found a gun from someone whom older players knew, but I was so behind that I felt an infinite bout of whiplash. The relationship of the Darkness and us was established in Season of Arrivals. There is a reason why Zavala wasn't stoic and adamantly against the whole darkness powers, as we already had that arc happen in Arrivals, a season that had the entirety of its story removed. The problem with the game is even though they have stopped sunsetting of expansions, the seasons are still a pinnacle part of the narrative moving forward. Moments like that are missed and seem very confusing when you play them and dont have the full context or understanding of the story in the universe. One thing I'd like to mention: "Newcomer" vs. "Veteran" dialogue.
    Some character interactions can have differing dialog depending on what stuff you've done in the game beforehand.
    In Beyond Light, if you're playing on an account carried over from D1, then one of Eramis's lieutenants will comment on you being the one who killed Oryx.
    When you first see the pyramid in Shadowkeep, your ghost will normally comment "What is that thing? I don't recognize it Guardian." But if you met with the queen during Forsaken, he'll instead say "No, that should not be here." in a very fearful tone.
    Not very many lines are changed throughout the game, but they usually cut out the overbearing expository bits since you should already know what they're talking about.
    Nice touch, just thought I should bring it up.

      I hate those dialogue things because they have no consistency. I played consoles and switched to pc so my guys act clueless. Ghost sees taken splotches and asks what they are, but Zavala talks about how you have, basically, single-handedly killed gods (Taken King). They half-assed the whole thing and it makes it really irritate me to hear them say any of it because they can't keep it straight and should've just avoided it.
      They set it up like thousands of guardians are traversing the universe but literally ALL major events pivot around only you. All dialogue of all these events are centered on you. Where's the time? You're essentially immortal but Amanda isn't. She hasn't aged in these dozen galactic threats you've taken care of personally.
      They've gotten so used to patchwork writing and rewrites, that it doesn't even matter (to them or the playerbase) what is canon or accurate anymore.

    try this out on pc with cryoclasm ihe, do a slide, and while your sliding press toggle sprint on the slide animation and jump, only works with some weapon types, so stay away from guns like sidearms and handcannons for this to work consistently. the momentum passes from the slide into the jump and makes stasis feel like the best movement for titan.

      It's also terrible for returning players. For example, I left after shadowkeep (like many people did) and now I found out I'd have to spend at least 160€ to catch up with the upcoming expansion. Among the reasons I left, the lack of interest in the game and general dismay at it's future along with University. I'd like to go back, I really do. But maybe once D3 comes out, if I have any time for games by then, or if/when D2 gets a Legendary edition with everything in it.
      The value itself is a problem, but the bigger problem is that I cannot play 160€ worth of content by the time new content comes out and some of the one I purchased is innevitably vaulted. Returning players are having problems...well...returning. There's no way anyone can get a friend and say "Hey, wanna spend 200€ upfront to play this game?".

Your longform vids are my favorite btw, but please don't feel forced to make such long content.
    Two: It's so nice to see IHE content again, but slight gripe: this felt more like an "I LOVE The Witch Queen" video than a hate one. XD
    Three: It's always heartwrenching for me to hear when a content creator I like is pushing themselves too hard. Assuming you haven't done so already, consider starting a patreon like all your other contemporaries. Plenty of people, myself included, would donate to feel like they are part of the IHE community. Consider talking to your creator friends about how to construct it and be realistic with how you want to reward people for tuning in if at all. That is a genuinely cool concept to me that the way your backstory is structured and the history of the Traveler frame the guardians as being the foot soldiers for an unfeeling machine only trying to save itself, essentially framing you as the villain. The Light taking your memories to where you are unquestioning is kind of unsettling with the darkness brining ones back makes me think the story is pushing for this focus on balance rather than good vs evil because both sides come across as being puppets for a force that we can’t comprehend.

      There might be a lesson in there about not overly relying on the charity of others. It showed up and gave us hundreds of years of heaven on earth, then a way to survive when a force showed up that we now know should have come knocking sooner or later anyways. It’s never asked anything of us and still allows us to use it’s power even as we experiment with the power of its enemy. To what degree it owes us anything now, I’m unsure. Yes we’ve defended it several times but it seems like it can just do that itself if need be as seen in the red war and season of arrivals

    Something really frustrating to me is that an interesting story was locked behind lore tabs on Trials gear. One Guardian goes off the rails when she sees that other guardians are using stasis and she ends up murdering them and their ghosts, like final for real deaths. She goes on a tear across the galaxy and her fireteam hunts her down at the behest of Ikora. Most recently she is caught and imprisoned, but instead of punishing her, with the Witness now here, Ikora releases her to the care of her old fireteam in an "all hands" move. This would have been great storytelling and super interesting to see, and it's frustrating that at this point in the storyline the Vanguard is basically pointless as they don't seem to care about what we do at all. They aren't even a slight roadblock for us, we don't get cast out due to our actions, they're just like "oh well okay I guess do whatever you think is best." They're the leaders of the city, why aren't they leading?

But again it’s because they don’t want to utilize the potential their world has and squander these moments over nothing more pathetic than greed.

Servers opens up, and I run down into the last bunker. Find out I have enough ... of whatever the material was called to open it up. This time around, there are no enemies around, just a lackluster cutscene and thats it. Was done with the final part of the campaign 15 mins after servers opened up. Said to myself "oh, thats it?" and looked what was going to be the next major story. Turns out it was going to be some olympic shit that boiled down to "Do tons of bounties to see which class can do the most bounties!". Turned the game of, uninstalled it and haven't touched it since. On a completely unrelated side note, your dedication to using what looks to be the Iron Banner hand cannon is impressive. I've genuinely never seen somebody using it outside of videos completely bashing it about how bad it is.
    That's one of the reasons I love Destiny, there are so many guns in the game, and a lot of them may not be 'meta-defining' but there are so many out there that just feel fun to use, and I've got an entire vault filled up with guns that I enjoy using, that other people would have deleted a looooong time ago 😂, (Wardens Law, the Duke, Harsh Language, Sola's Scar all come to mind haha).
    Edit:
    Also, i don't think I've seen somebody using Mida Multi-tool in PvE since the launch of D2 when we first got it at the end of the 'campaign'. That is definitely a brave choice for the legendary campaign haha

    While I've often disagreed with some of your takes on the destiny franchise, your videos are so well put together and each and every time you talk about the series I can see where you're coming from and respect it. This video was certainly no exception, and I'm actually surprised at the generally lighter tone this video had over your previous ones, despite you going back to your "I HATE [insert thing here]" title structure, which made me expect another video with mostly biting criticism. I wasn't expecting the long stretches of time where you were describing moments from the lore, story, and the missions from the witch queen that you really enjoyed, and this time around you definitely engaged with more of the game than you have for previous videos, which made for a nice fuller picture of the game.
    I 100% agreed with your criticisms of beyond light's repetitive and grindy structure, as well as the lack of care being put into the core playlists, and how absolutely abhorrent the current pricing model is for the game, along with the abundance of microtransactions. I'm someone who spends a lot of money in this game because I feel like I'm getting my money's worth for the sheer amount of time I spend in this franchise. But seeing it laid out from the context of a lapsed player who's not as invested in the game as I am made me realize just how serious this issue is getting.
    Thankfully, the Lightfall reveal did actually cover some things that you mentioned in this video, such as an in-game LFG, as well as no more sunsetting. Which is great and all, but you definitely drove home the point of live service games feeling impossible to critique since they're constantly being updated and improved. So anything you mention, even in this very video, could be addressed "eventually." But at the end of the day, those fixes coming in the future doesn't magically make it feel better now, and it won't retroactively make the bad experience people had better.
    Anyway, this was a great watch. I consume so much destiny content, it's nice to have a more critical look at the game every once in a while, to help me see the perspective of others who aren't as mindlessly addicted to the game as I. You were so thorough in your critique, it doubled as a fantastic video essay, not just a review. I'd like to see more game reviews and critiques from you some time that aren't just Destiny sometime too. Hearing you talk about things that you actually enjoy is pretty nice, even if it kinda goes against your branding. I think it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on a game that you actually FULLY enjoy, not like the love/hate relationship you have with Destiny.

    • @J-manli
      @J-manli Год назад +6

      The sad thing about live-service game development which I don't think a lot of people realize yet: their will almost always be a delayed period between the initial complaints and criticisms from the community and the response and reworking by the devs. It is physically impossible to implement structural overhauls in the amount of time the more impatient members of the community want. But sadly that delay can create the image that the "devs don't listen"

    • @chidorisnake22
      @chidorisnake22 Год назад +12

      @@J-manli All the more reason why it's important to get it as close to right as you can the first time. That's why I hate most "live service" games: it gives the executives at these publishers (not necessarily the devs themselves) an excuse to push out half-assed, half-baked products to meet a quarterly deadline under the premise of "we'll fix it later". It's lazy, it's anti-consumer, and it's downright disrespectful to the developers' artistic and creative vision, because no dev wants their game to go out unpolished and unfinished.
      I'm not saying minor bugs won't happen in games or that mistakes in development won't be missed. It happens, it's inevitable, but you can clearly tell the difference between a missed check and publishers really not giving a shit about a competent, finished product, e.g. Cyberpunk 2077 or Fallout 76.

I put a lot of time and a solid chunk money into it over the last 3 years and the only thing that kept me there was social experiences with friends and sunken cost fallacy. I've put down the game for now but to me it's sad to see people just sit and watch Bungie get away with these extremely consumer-unfriendly practices. I never shilled for Bungie but I believed that "it would get better" (E.G. preordering deluxe editions etc.) and while it did show hope with things like Witch Queen, it doesn't change that fact that my time outside of major content drops was spent in a skinner box of repetition and bland reward, and that I'll never get that time I spent back.
