Rewriting the Buu Saga | The Anatomy of Anime

- I love Dragon Ball Z and have fond memories of the Buu saga but in recent years I've come to the conclusion that I think it could be made shorter and have a few moments changed up here and there. Like Giving Gohan a leading role and making fusion actually matter!
So I thought I'd try my hand at it. It might end up being closer to Dragon Ball Heroes than Dragon Ball Z but at least I gave it a go!

Have all the characters fight Buu and when they realize they can’t win against him...they wish goku back towards the VERY absolute end to finally beat Buu

One problem, you can’t cut out the scene where vegeta embraces trunks. It was some major character development for vegeta and makes his sacrifice even more emotional.
Edit: Also piccolo saying that he won’t end up in heaven adds to the sacrifice
Agreed. I understand why he made the change to fit his story, but that scene is perfection.
I agree, keep the sacrifice. Could use the following approach to fit in with the proposed story.
Vegeta should have told Trunks and Goten to take Gohan into the time chamber to save him, whilst having the humility to say that Gohan was Earth's only hope. *echoes of cell saga*
Vegeta does this whilst fighting buu single-handed, in order to buy them time to get into the chamber. As Trunks stands at the door, Vegeta says something to Trunks about how proud he is of him and how he is going to miss seeing him grow up.
Then Vegeta blows up the door before finally sacrificing himself up on the lookout.
@@jrand2148 that scene brings tears to my eyes

The only think I disliked here was Vegeta not being able to tell Trunks he’s proud of him. And Piccolo telling him that he’ll end up in hell regardless.
That is pivotal to Vegeta’s Sacrifice.
I agree because Vegeta has a choice at that moment and he makes the right one. It marks him as a good guy for the first time. At that point in my eyes Vegeta became a Z-fighter instead of just someone who was sometimes allied with them.
Piccolo telling him he will be in hell regardless made it even better. Vegeta was still fearless knowing that even tho he was going to sacrifice himself he was going to hell. He never did anything for anyone before but finally had reason Todo so knowing he wouldn't be rewarded for it.
Manni Live Exactly. And what Piccolo said as he was flying off with Krillin _“For the first time, Vegeta is fighting for someone other than himself.”_
Yeah
Everything in that scene perfectly tied up Vegeta's character arc. He knew there was no reward or way out if he choose to sacrifice himself and ensured not only the safety of his own son but also the safety of Goten. Then, before being, as far as he knee, being wiped from existence, he though of his family and Goku.
“Gohan needs to be the main character.... this is gonna be difficult...”
-Mark/Toriyama
The school arc needs to happen. All of dragon ball z has been "let's save earth", but we never cared about earth. We only cared about the group.
Gohan needs to make friends with a few normal humans.
I'd have gohan face a low level enemy at school. A place where you're constantly on edge thinking that the classmates could get killed. I'd have the friends join gohan to meet the Z fighters and seeing all these amazing things that have just become normal to us. Kamis lookout. Energy blasts. Friends that can fly and punch a mountain away. I'd put more attention to how surreal it is.
We've watched the journey. Gohan became so strong that he could beat cell. We want him to get recognised for it. We want the classmates to know he's the equivalent of superman.
Having these outsiders be part of it would also subconsciously make you think that all the other humans aren't just extras, but people with their own lives and struggles. Especially if the classmates has families in a city that the enemy destroys. It just makes "fighting for earth" more real.
yeah you're absolutely right. The characters were fighting to "save earth" all the time but there was nothing on earth that compelled us emotionally to care about it, aside from it being the group's home. I would still like to keep Gohan hiding his identity as the one who defeated Cell for a couple reasons. 1, his character wouldn't appreciate receiving glory and fame the way Mr. Satan does. He's polite, calm and a bit socially akward and cares more about doing what's right than receiving glory for it. 2, him wanting his family to have a normal life instead of surrounded by paparazzi is totally justified. And 3, especially after getting to know Videl, he empathizes with Mr. Satan and realizes Satan needs that glory a lot more than he does.
I hate the "great saiyaman" and think it's cringeworthy even though it's supposed to be ridiculous on purpose, and that's because it's completely out of Gohan's character. Since his identity would have to remain hidden I can see why it's necessary, but Gohan should be a lot more serious and in-character about this whole super hero business. Struggling with responsibilities and doing what's right and all. Much like spider man, as Mark made an extremely good comparison in Gohan's video. Plus that damn outfit needs a re-design.
Still, it would be a lot more effective if just his group of friends discovered the truth. Videl and his classmates come to realize it was Gohan that beat Cell and decide to keep his secret between them, that way he gets recognized for his achievement instead of just a pat on the back and a "bye son". I mean Gohan was supposed to be Goku's successor. Everything in the Cell arc pointed to that, and then in the Buu arc they just said sike and made Gohan fade into obscurity because they didn't know what to do with him. They stuck with Goku because it was comfortable. I'm more than eager to rewrite this entire saga and even toward Super. Gohan is my absolute favourite character and it killed me seeing him obliterated to uselessness the way he was.
@@JinlongTheGoldenDragon They never wanted to save Earth, they only wanted to save themselves, their family, and to keep fighting.

Seeing how in Japan everyone loves and clamors for more Goku (no matter what), Toriyama most likely had little choice when his editor/publisher pushed him to bring back Goku. It made business sense: customers wanted more Goku, and Goku brings the money.
This is the guy who absolutely hated Vegeta as a character. When he was killed off, his role in the Saiyan and Freeza sagas were done as far as Toriyama was concerned, but Vegeta was such a huge fan favorite and begged for Vegeta to return, so Toriyama bent to the will of his customers.

@@KimiOmega Gohan is trapped in the Room of Spirit and Time, not dead.
That's what toriyama said about the end of the frieza saga
It actually would LOOK like a bitterseet ending if you are not aware of Majin Buu´s contractual inmortality (no individual entity can ever kill him).
Assume that Vegeta knows his self-sacrifice would completely destroy Kami´s lookout (plus Karin´s Tower and Cloud´s Village below, but he has never met them anyways); so he had to wait for Trunks to get to that "safety bunker" that is the time/dimension room [so if he fails to Kill Majin Buu, at least the monster would not be able to follow them inside].
-> Even if they can never get out, his only son will have at least enough food and water to live for a few years with a friend and a mentor.
Jokes aside: Everyone saves the day in the saiyan saga, Goku does in the Frieza saga, Gohan does in the Cell saga and Vegeta does in the Buu saga.
This is a good rewrite! The confusion from everyone during the last few minutes of this really amplified the intensity.
My only tiny nitpick is that by removing Trunks from the situation _before_ Vegeta sacrifices himself also removes the hug they shared, which I feel weakens his realization that he needs to be a better father.
Also why would Trunks ignore Vegeta getting shot by Gohan completely? Shouldn’t he at least be conflicted? To virtually not acknowledge his father, and help Gohan without hesitation is questionable
nineteenct he saw what his father did at the tournament

dragonballs... nuff said
@@PrinceSilvermane and regardless of Dragonballs, he'd seen his dads corpse at age 4, seeing anybody dead at that young age would traumatise you, and doubly so if it was the father you idolised.
then, add into that his being Kidnapped by Piccolo, regardless of how, in later life, he looked up to Piccolo, that would just add to the mess.
then, add to that watching Yamcha, Tien and Chaotzu get murdered by Nappa (Yamchas death probably being the most traumatic, because, after thinking he'd won, Yamcha got blindsided), and then, Piccolo sacrificing himself to save Gohan, and, once again, somebody he is close to dying right in front of him.
then add him having his neck broken by Recoome on Namek, on top of watching an entire species getting murdered by the space mafia, then Krillin dying in front of him.
then you get the androids, who are hunting down his seriously ill father, to kill him, in Gohans mind, just because, and made even worse by him being surrounded by death at every turn as Cell wipes out entire citys, men, women and children, hundreds of thousands of them.
then Vegeta letting Cell reach his perfect form, and, after that, his father, the man who is supposed to protect him, not only making him fight cell, but, giving Cell a senzu bean just before they fight.
and then, his dad dies, again, and, this time, refuses to be wished back
how in the hell is Gohan not a gibbering wreck by the start of the Buu saga? or a sociopath, who has been desensitised to death and suffering, who, after seeing so much death, feels that there is so little point in anybody being alive that he thinks that peoples lives are meaningless (frightening when you consider that, just a few days before his father comes back, he is literally the single most powerful creature on the planet)

You put effort into it, and you do a good job of theming without the viewer needing to know what came before it, but you make the same mistake most people do when they go at this subject: you don't get how Dragon Ball works. The themes are too mature, the storylines are too complex, and overall you're just projecting what you wish it were from the perspective of an adult, missing what you and other people liked about it in the first place. There's no light-heartedness, there's no quick and easy-to-get-into thread, and there's overall a lack of the simplicity and "digestability" the series generally has and originally makes the series so appealing in the first place; it's *not* complicated, and it's *not* complex.
This is one of the reasons the recent Broly movie was so well-received by fans, but was also a solid production on its own merits; it did what Dragon Ball does well, while minimizing what it isn't great at, producing a satisfying and fun experience with just enough heart and charm to make you smile along the way.
This doesn't do that; it's an almost totally different entity wearing the skin of the series. For better or worse, you can't "fix" most of Dragon Ball without making it not Dragon Ball anymore. The common gripes most people have with it -- that it's inconsistent, makes shit up as it goes along, constantly breaks its own rules, and needlessly marginalizes potential clever use of characters in favor of just raising the bar -- are all generally addressable without losing the spirit of the series, but this ultimately doesn't tackle any of those issues, bar the touching-upon of the latter.
Ultimately, a swing and a miss, because you tried using a golf club to hit the baseball.
Crazy thing is the inconsistent making sht up not following it's own rules are for those who need to revisit the material because they didn't comprehend what they originally saw or read. Those same individuals fail to recognize that the story expands and we get a much longer world building so some facts of it turnout to be just theories such as the potara fusion as an example. Never had non gods used them prior to goku and vegeta so no one would know that after an hour or with extra exertion the fusion would end. In the buu saga we all assume it was because of being inside buu that the fusion ended it's never stated buu was the cause. As goku and frieza holds the record for the longest 5mins, buu and vegito can hold the record for the shortest hour.
Only thing I would change about dragonball in recent years is then animation studio. When madhouse a1 whitefox and a couple others really wanna flex there animation raises the bar.
MiaowGaiGar Fantastic points. I feel like *everyone* misses the essence of Dragon Ball when trying to address its flaws, and they generally don't look back to check their work to see what they added in the end compared to what was lost.
Sometimes you can have a better thought-out product and still come out with a worse end result, eh?
MiaowGaiGar You summed up everything I was thinking about PERFECTLY, I really hope he notices your comment so he can draw inspiration and improve on these missteps
You people hate it because it introduces adult and mature themes LMAO

@@christopherfleetwood5252 and gohan a goten
I see you're playing out the Traumatic experience, but Gohan getting knocked unconscious again and again was pretty conflicting.
True... but if you think about it, that's literally what happened to Goku in the Saiyan/Freiza arc. Raditz shows up, Goku dies. Vegeta/Nappa show up, Goku is hospitalized. Goku fights the Ginyus, he's in the healing tank. Fights Frieza, gone for years. Same shit, just over a shorter time frame IMO. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@gyroscopesrcool yeah but those were different arcs. This all happened in one. Which makes it seem more obnoxious
@@gyroscopesrcool Gohan was knocked back out less than a minute from when he regained consciousness tho in this video.
When a saiyan survives being beaten down, they come back stronger. Knocking Gohan unconscious twice would probably give him a massive power boost once he recovers. This was actually Vegetas strategy in the Frieza saga.
that's why it'll make gohan more of a badass when he powers up and his resolve is back
I love the Buu saga, flaws and all.
However, I see the points and thought about how to fix it.
I love Gohan, adult and all.
i like gohan but they destroyed his badass side
@@diobuthesconfused7507 No I think his badass side was always intact.
Most of the time he is passive, but piss him off and prepare for an ass whooping.
We see this in his Ultimate form, where he beats Buu senseless. He was cold, sadistic and cocky because he had everything under control. Well almost.
@@mandalorianhunter1 yeah but it just sucks that he gained it by sitting still instead of training with elder kai, elder kai should have reformed the z sword making it heavier and empowering it with magic that gohan could absorb while training
@@erikmartinez8814 Then it would have something elses power and kinda an ass pull like the magic water was for Goku during The King Piccolo arc.
That would defeat the purpose of his untapped power that we have been seeing throughout his history.
I can why having his power be unlocked by sitting can seem boring, but its interesting seeing his limitors be removed.
His training should have had him go Super Saiyan 3 to his Ultimate form.
Adult Gohan was bad
one thing that should’ve been included was vegetas speech to trunks, probably one of the most heart wrenching and well deserved moments in the series. Vegeta could’ve called trunks over to him to tell him to bring gohan into the chamber, he does the whole “ive never hugged you thing” and then it continues as you described
Much as it was just a lot of stuff, I really strongly disagree with cutting out high school arc. It sets up a lot of teenaged Gohan’s character and struggles to fit in, on top of being an honest to god high point of the manga. Toriyama’s comedy writing skills with a socially awkward superman against normal people, in crime and at school, are on full display, and it’s legitimately my favorite part of the Buu saga.
The school arc makes Gohan into a lovable goof in a way distinct from his father, and could probably even work well with the trauma stuff if leaned into as a coping mechanism; this is his way of trying to emulate his father while making Earth’s heroism his own. Goku wouldn’t go around stopping petty crimes and robberies and non world level threats that aren’t a challenge for him, but Gohan feels a responsibility to the earth he inherited the mantle of guardian of. Goku never felt such obligation, just fighting for the thrill of each challenge and adventure and to protect and avenge the people he cares about, and just sorta happened into the part of earth’s guardian.
Other than that, just the standard comments about how Vegeta could’ve stood to have a moment with Trunks, known in no uncertain terms he was going to hell, so on so forth.
All in all, this is the part of the Buu saga that needed the least fixing, so interested in seeing your ideas for when it actually starts getting messy.
Jacob Scouten highly agree with ur opinion!! Would like to see how you would handle the boo arc
@@Trxpamvs There isn't really much that needs changing with this first part, which kinda reflects on the video. Most of the changes here are ultimately not all that big game-changers until the end part with the time chamber.
Probably gonna wait for part 2 to drop and then see what I think. Things I very much hope Mark doesn't try to say should be dropped, though:
-Mr. Satan and Buu's friendship/what results of it
-Vegito (I know ultimately he really isn't all that important to the story at all, but neither are a lot of Buu saga's absolute high points. He's way too good to just waste)
-That one last time Tien is strong enough to momentarily be a nuisance to Buu
-Mr. Satan being the savior of the universe for real
Just realized now though that there's no room for Goten and Trunks to have their whole misadventure with entering the tournament in disguise, though, so that's a bummer. Hope we at least keep 18 extorting the big man.
Jacob Scouten well I got to be honest I never really liked mister Satan. If I would change anything it would be making goten & trunks more relevant in the story & give Piccolo more to do.
I like it... but removing that Vegeta and Trunks moment before he kills himself hurt me...

Dont disrespect the prince of all saiyans like that.
do you want a powerful moment, or a powerful story?
@@bbriefs8689 I think both could be had if Vegeta were the hero of this arc. Gohan just had his with Cell. Goku had plenty. For Vegeta's redemption to truly come full circle, he should have been the one to save the day.
Besides that moment was one of, if not the best in the series and isn't worth trading.
@@thetribalist6923 you're right. it was a beautiful moment. maybe if they saved it for the very end. i think it would have been more meaningful if it had actually worked tho.

Don’t you mean *FATHER-SON* Duo?
Gohan going to school is the best piece of anime/manga ever created and definitely the best DBZ arc ever. No, you can't change my mind.
Gohan in the time chamber is going to teach Goten and Trunks the fusion dance from the bits he heard from Goku while he was in a daze. Calling it now.
Goku can speak to him through king kai and explain what he has to tell them.
would Goku be able to talk to Gohan in the time chamber? it was stated that the time chamber was a different reality during the Z era, and why time moved faster there.
That first bits pretty obvious imo.
Uhhh, I sense really bad fanfick of Gohan fan here... I mean video, not your comment.
Gotenks was able to go Super Saiyan 3 by observing the transformation demonstrated by Goku when they were apart and the fact that he’s a fusion who naturally has more power then the sum of the two. I predict that in Not Mark’s rewrite, Gotenks won’t go Super Saiyan 3 but with Trunks already having the experience of a Super Saiyan when confronting his father, Gotenks will also be able to as well. Whether with ease or not, I suppose is up to him. I like this version of the story. Gohan will have to demonstrate the fusion dance that he’s only basically dreamed, and maybe even the details of what it means to become a Super Saiyan to Goten as Goku did for him while in critical condition along with the guilt of attacking Vegeta who was fighting with them in a fit of traumatic rage. His hands are well BEYOND full. This is some great writing.
I don't think it being in a different time space makes a difference but its better than Gohan just going hey guys do this dance because I heard it while half unconscious. ._.
I'm gonna be the only person but I personally like the change of pace at the beginning of the buu saga. Probably because gohan is my favorite character
Infernate I thought the beginning was great too. Videl and gohan was cute to watch them fall in love and it had a lot of shout outs to the original dragon ball. The only thing that needs to be cut even slightly is the dragged out fight with buu
I think the beginning of Buu Saga is very good, the Great Saiyaman seems to me like a great tribute to comic book heroes like Spider-Man, besides being very good to help the development of Gohan as a character.
Kaisenjin yeah exactly. It’s comic relief which they hardly ever use even though they’re fun to watch
Buu saga isn’t great
But If Buu saga didn’t exist
I don’t think that Dragon ball would be like it was today. GT, Super, Heroes, Xenoverse, etc.
Ok clown
the less said about GT the better
Gt super heroes and xenoverse would be better
soooo... buu saga was worst on all senses xd
All those spin offs are trash though so your point doesnt really make sense.
Gohan : The Unconscious
Coming to cinemas near you
This blew me away. I was fully invested in Gohan's journey and how it didn't push Goku to the forefront. Also, him having panic attacks and making the snap decision to gravely injure Vegeta was amazing.
How to fix the ending of the Goku Black Arc:
Let Vegito stay fused for longer, and let him be what prompts Trunks to find this new technique and finish off Zamasu. You simultaneously get more action scenes with Vegito so he won’t feel shoehorned in or cheated, while also making Trunks’ attack not seem entirely unmerited.
*Vegito is kicking around Zamasu similar to how he did with Buuhan, being sure to get in plenty of quips in the process. He lets out one more massive attack, similar in scale to the Final Kamehameha. He then breaks away from the fight after sending Zamasu flying and stands next to Trunks, powering down as he does so*
Trunks: Wow! You two are amazing! He doesn’t stand a chance anymore! You can finish him off right now!
Vegito: No, I can’t. You’re going to have to finish this Trunks.
Trunks, confused: What? I don’t understand. He can barely touch you and you’re wiping the floor with him! What do you mean?
Vegito: It’s that immortal body of his. It’s the real deal. He’s not nearly as powerful as I am, you’re right, but he doesn’t have to be. He continues to survive the onslaught time after time, I’ve thrown everything I have at him twice now. And like the Kai said, I’m going to defuse soon.
Trunks: Oh no! Are you sure?!
Vegito: I am. And when I do, those two are going to be out of commission. So this is up to you Trunks.
Trunks: Me? What can I do here... you two have been out of my league for a while n-
Vegito: Enough of that!
Trunks: Huh?
Vegito: You’re a Saiyan, right? And on top of that you protect these people. Do you really think you have an excuse to fail?
Trunks: But I-
*The young boy and girl from earlier interject*
Boy: Trunks won’t fail! He always takes care of us!
Girl: Yeah! No matter what or who it is, Trunks will win!
*The onlookers all start agreeing and cheering Trunks on*
Trunks: You guys...
Vegito, smiling: See that? I don’t see how you can doubt yourself when these people behind you believe in you so much. *Stepping to leave* I’ll buy you as much time as I can, get prepared.
Trunks, snapping around after looking to the crowd: Oh! Right.
Vegito: I believe in you too, you know.
*Trunks looks at Vegito, eyes wide*
Vegito: I’ve seen how you’ve grown during this whole mess, how you’ve stayed in the fight despite how much more powerful your foes were up til now. You’re more than capable of sealing the deal here, probably in a way I never could.
Trunks: Wh-
Vegito, laughing: Don’t overthink it.
*Vegito then powers back up to Blue and rushes toward Zamasu, who picks himself up off the ground just in time to be punched in the face*
Zamasu: Graaaaah! You insolent, feeble-minded being!
Vegito: Now that’s not very nice! What’s the matter, big guy? Immortality not seem all that grand anymore?
Zamasu: What are you talking about? My immortal form is divine perfection!
Vegito: If you ask me, all your “immortal form” has done is let you be a wonderful punching bag for me for the last few minutes.
Zamasu: Why you-
Vegito: Now hey, that’s quite a feat! No one I’ve ever faced before has been able to withstand me going all out against them. But you can take it, can’t you your holiness?
Zamasu, powering up: The only thing I’ll be taking is your head!
Vegito: Feel free to try!
*Vegito and Zamasu resume fighting, and Trunks is left alone to think*
Trunks, internally: What does he mean? What can I do that he can’t? What do I have that he doesn’t?
*Trunks then flashes back to his memories of saving the people of this timeline, remembering all the times they thanked him. Their appreciation and trust makes Trunks realize something*
Trunks, internally: That must be it! These people believe that I can win, they’ve always had my back no matter the odds! Such a powerful trust, how do I tap into that?
*Trunks then looks back at the fight unfolding in front of him*
Trunks, internally: However I have to do it, I need to figure it out fast. Father and Goku don’t have much time left.
*Vegito and Zamasu clash fists one last time, and then Vegito spins around and kicks him away only to immediately defuse after*
Goku: Aw crap! This is really bad!
Vegeta: Damn it all, how can he not be showing any signs of being beaten to a bloody pulp just now?
*Zamasu raises out of the rubble of a destroyed building to see Goku and Vegeta, and immediately laughs hysterically*
Zamasu: What did I tell you, filthy Saiyans?! Your attempts to imitate the gods will always result in utter failure. Maybe this time that lesson will sink in. After all, you’ll have an eternity in oblivion to think about it!
*Zamasu then rushes at the two. Goku and Vegeta muster up the strength to go Super Saiyan, and brace for him. The two get swatted around effortlessly*
Zamasu: What’s wrong, mortals? No more divine energy to call on for your constant mockery of the gods?! Will the proud warrior race of the Saiyans truly go out with a whimper?!
*Goku and Vegeta pick themselves up and nod at each other, rushing at Zamasu and latching on to him in an attempt to hold him back*
Zamasu: What is this?!
Vegeta: Trunks! Son! I believe in you! Show everyone that you carry within you the pride of a Saiyan and defeat this loon!
*Trunks is taken aback immediately*
Goku: Trunks! All these people believe in you for a reason! So do we! Call out to them for power and end this thing!
*Zamasu starts thrashing the two around, but they hang on and steady themselves to keep him from moving*
Zamasu: Indignant whelps! Release me!
Trunks, internally: They really do think I can do this. Goku’s right, I have to reach out to that and take hold of it! Now!
*As Zamasu finally rids himself of Goku and Vegeta, power starts flowing from the crowd to Trunks, creating a unique aura. As the people notice it, they stretch their hands out to Trunks and give all that they can.*
Zamasu, visibly confused: What is this?
*Goku and Vegeta nod to each other and give their energy as well. Trunks receives this energy and takes his sword in hand, channeling it all to recreate the shattered blade*
Trunks, internally: This is it, this is what father and Goku meant! I can feel it! I can do this!
*Trunks then yells out and rushes Zamasu, finishing him similarly to how it occurs in the show proper. The crowd cheers in an uproar as Trunks stands victorious. Goku and Vegeta walk up to Trunks smiling*
Vegeta: Good job, son. I’m proud of you.
Trunks: Dad...
Vegeta: See that, Kakarot? I bet neither of your brats could pull that off.
Goku, laughing: Maybe not, only time will tell, right? But yeah, that was amazing Trunks! It was a lot like a Spirit Bomb, but I guess that makes sense. We knew you could do it!
*The three stand together as the crowd makes their way to Trunks, but before they can start celebrating, Zamasu spreads into the sky and begins endlessly expanding*
Trunks: Seriously?! Even now you won’t quit?!
Vegeta: This is bad, we need to to do something quickly.
Goku: Aw man, if only I had another senzu bean, maybe I could do something.
*Reaching into his gi, Goku feels the small button that Zeno gave him*
Goku: Oh?
*Pulling out the button, Goku sees that it has been smashed and no longer works*
Goku: I forgot I even had this. Man, that would’ve been nice.
Vegeta: I don’t know what you’re on about, but we need to act now!
Goku: Wait! Where’s Bulma?
Vegeta: Why?
Goku: Do you think she’s done with the time machine?
Trunks: Probably at this point, but why? What will that do?
Vegeta: Just spit it out Kakarot!
Goku: No time! I’ll be back, keep everyone safe!
*Goku then rushes off to Bulma and fades from sight. Left there to deal with Zamasu for the time being, Vegeta and Trunks deflect random bolts of lightning falling from Zamasu’s gaseous form. After a while, Goku then returns with the pot and seal for the Mafuba technique*
Goku: Quick, Trunks! Help me out here!
Trunks, realizing Goku’s plan: I see! Alright!
*The two of them, through a massive effort, use the technique and seal Zamasu in the small pot, nullifying the threat*
Goku: Phew! We pulled it off! Good job, Trunks!
Trunks: I should be thanking you, Goku. You were the one that thought of the Mafuba.
Goku, patting Trunks on the back: Oh trust me, today is all yours, Trunks.
*Goku then holds up the pot Zamasu is sealed in*
Goku: Now then, what to do with this?
Trunks: It’s far too dangerous to keep around anywhere.
Vegeta: Oh don’t worry, I know what to do.
*Goku and Trunks look at Vegeta puzzled*
*Back in the main timeline, Vegeta marches the pot up to Beerus*
Beerus: And this is supposed to be...?
Vegeta: Would you mind destroying this for me, Lord Beerus?
Beerus: The destructive power of a destroyer god is not something to call upon lightly, Vegeta.
Vegeta: Would it change anything if I told you that Zamasu was inside it?
Beerus: That arrogant little snot is in this thing?
Vegeta: He is indeed.
Beerus, smiling widely: I think I can do that for you after all
*After Beerus destroys the pot, and as a result Zamasu, Trunks departs in similar fashion to the show proper but now returns to his own timeline with Mai. Zeno, now wanting to check up on Goku because he hasn’t seen the Saiyan in a while, visits earth directly to talk, nearly giving Beerus a heart attack. Zeno asks if Goku will come visit him soon so they can talk about something fun the Omniking has planned as he replaces Goku’s Zeno button.*

I like how you used Tapion's theme. Fits perfectly in that moment.
This is exactly what I've wanted to see for this saga. Thank you for renewing it to something that's so much more enjoyable!

6TH RULE OF POPO'S TRAINING!
Haven't watched the whole video but I can see some problems already.
1) the whole marking a calendar with an x thing... you must know that's crap. It's cliche and lazy.
2) Gohan having PTSD... I love Future Trunks, but, I don't think we need Gohan to become a poor mans Trunks. Gohan should have his own character arc. (Hopefully you see the mistake now)
3) Taking away the SSJ forms from Goten and Trunks... ALL you've done is taken the intrigue away from the training scenes. Without this shock revelation the audience's interest level doesn't ramp up. (How can they transform so young?!! How strong are they? etc...)
4) The energy draining scene is poor. Why doesn't Gohan know the plan when everyone else does? Having him fall unconscious after transforming and all the build up - weak writing. You build up to a bang, not a whimper.
5) You've regressed Piccolo's character by having him stay back to berate Gohan. Gohan didn't even know the plan so why is Piccolo being so over the top angry at him? I think you're mixing up Vegeta's character and Piccolo's character here, but, even Vegeta wouldn't stay back just to say shit - he'd want to go where the action is.
6) Piccolo flying off and thinking "come on Gohan we're counting on you" is even worse. Now not only have you badly characterized Piccolo with the whole rant, you've also left the audience with a weak understanding of Piccolo's motivations. It first seemed like he was angry and disappointed with Gohan, but, not even 5 seconds later his WHOLE tone has changed abruptly and now everything that was just said makes no sense.
I could tell you how to write it better but lets move on.
7) Videl stands infront of Gohan and shows him she cares, only for Gohan to shout at her and fly off. Gohan's character is shown in a poor light here. It doesn't even feel like Gohan. It feels like the story is implying this isn't Gohan anymore.
8) Gohan catches up to Goku and Vegeta who continue not to tell him anything which would sort the problem out immediately. I can see you're TRYING to make the audience feel out of the loop through Gohan to create tension and intrigue, but, this is crap. There's no reason for Goku to do this...
I'm done picking on everything because it would take too long.
I don't think you're understanding characters and character dynamics. Gohan is not Future Trunks, Piccolo is not Vegeta, etc...
Why is everyone angry and shouting and on edge the entire time? Do you know who Goku is? He's light-hearted, just like Gohan and Goten. They have a childlike innocence in their demeanor. That's not to say they can't get angry and serious, but, you're not showing your audience who the characters are before you show the drastic change in attitude which signals the situation (and the mood of the character because of said situation) has changed.
A KEY POINT THAT MUST BE CHANGED: Nobody feels like they're on the same team.
Goku shouts at Gohan without explaining why Gohan is wrong, Piccolo shouts at Gohan, Gohan shouts at Videl, Goku tells Gohan to buck his ideas up the second they reunite...
Might write more another time.
Nailed it for me really, even as a fan of Gohan, I just can't get around this at all
Bluh Bluhhh k I agree with what your saying but with the time it took you to type ALL of that you should’ve been able to see all of it
Taking away SSJ from Goten and Trunks is something I am 100% behind. Even throughout the Cell saga, super saiyan remained an incredible power that only the greatest heroes could achieve. The buu saga turned it into something Goten did when he was like 5 because his mother hit him. Maybe if they can actually earn super saiyan like the others then sure. But they just... were super saiyans. It was a plot contrivance, not an attempt to intrigue the audience with questions that never get answered or really asked.
@@Junebug89 yes it was absolutely just so that the kids weren't absolute fodder.
The point still stands that the training portions of the saga would have been much MUCH more boring if they didn't go ssj.
Just imagine it.
@@AidanStokes92 nah I agree trunks and gotten not going super saiyen was a good idea because of the story he built by doing so.
He mention trunks didnt go super saiyen but got close to hitting veget. I'm sure with more flushed out writing your see how he'd make the scene interesting but fir the sake of the video he didnt give us a line for line demonstration of the scene.
To get back to the point, trunks couldnt land a punch on vegeta. To fast forward to vegeta becoming possessed and killing the fans in the stance trunks; understanding the despicable act his father just commented, becomes overwhelmed with rage and passion charges vegeta as a super saiyen. With vegeta conflicted and in shock of seeing his son turn super saiyen for the first time, this is the moment trunks lays not only a punch but full on combination. Let them go back and forth but ultimately end in vegeta knocking off trunks.
That would be the beginning of vegeta coming out of full surrenderance to bobidi. Then go forth like he said.
What would you change about the Boo Saga ?
Mark:Yes
I could write an essay about this but, I'll keep it simple:
Why does Gohan keeps getting KOed and brought back consistently?
Why didn't they share the overall plan with Gohan? He IS one of the smartest DB Characters, why not just share the plan details at the tournament? It would also make a greater impact when he snaps.
Others have said it but, you took away a lot of the important stuff about Vegeta's death.
I love the fact that Gohan is the main character now, but him being at his peak kinda takes away from the whole deal. If you somehow kept him a bit depowered, he could then have his middle arc be "I was mistaken by not training properly and thinking everything was going to be fine after Cell. Now I need to get better, train harder, push myself to the limit, to make up for lost time".
Let's see how this goes.
It got me how everyone was mad at Gohan for rushing in to save Piccolo when no one bothered to fill him in on the plan. That's on them, not him.
What ultimately ruined the video to me was more that it never fully addressed and rectified the big reason why Gohan was never going to be the "hero." That's fine, though. This is more due to ignorance of Western fans than any master plan on Toei and Toriyama's part. We are largely unfamiliar with the Chinese fantasy roots of Dragon Ball, and that's a big reason why we're so often baffled by choices made for it.
Dragon Ball is fundamentally a _wuxia_ cartoon, and one of the tropes of wuxia is that of the "scholar", someone who is treated by the writer with disdain just because he wants to follow another path besides that of the warrior. It's a millennia-old trope in Chinese fantasy; Toriyama's shtick is that he was parodying all that, and the fun thing about Gohan was that he was a fusion of a stereotypically effete scholar with one of the most badass powers and personalities, turning the Scholar stereotype on its head... until he then played it straight by having Gohan not amount to anything compared to actual professional warriors.
In the end, he was defeated by tropes that have long preceded him. It's like the smart & funny guy of a typical RPG hero band trying to not be the smart & funny guy against the Word of God, when the Word of God absolutely _demands_ all the tropes be followed.
For Gohan to step up to the plate in this series, he _has_ to abandon his desire of being a scholar.
@@Yuli_Ban I don't remember Gohan wanting to be a scholar. Just a mom that was forcing him to be one.

So my girl Videl is, um, even more of a cheerleader in this version? And also has one line of dialogue so far...
Cutting the school life arc is a massive misstep, imho. Make it more relevant, I say, don't cut it - it was the closest Gohan ever got to being the main character. He's unconscious for most of this retelling.
Yeah, that's probably a better idea. While the high school stuff became mostly irrelevant, it can still serve as a way of establishing the new status quo.
I haven't even watched the video yet, but I can safely say that "mini arc" is one of the most realistic and human moments in the entire series. (Was a great sigh of relief after the drawn out final cell fight...)
It's interesting to see so many comments complain about "you took out this awesome part!", I guess it just goes to show that despite any problems the buu arc had, it had a lot of stand out moments that people really like lol
Have you SEEN Goku? He's unconscious/dead/travelling/training for most of his DBZ story too.

Gohan: Oh no i killed us all
Goku: no gohan, Just me
no wonder he suffers from panic attacks
Mark: Releases a video on rewriting the Buu Saga
Me: TeamFourStar probably taking notes for Abridged.

We'll find out in 6 years
I like the idea of Gohan having to take Goku's place as Earth's guarding, but giving him mental issues as a poor shot at depth in the character is unnecessary. Your entire story is just random interactions that don't stay true to the actual DBZ characters. Piccolo yells at Gohan, then he's suddenly depending on him, Goku yells at Gohan, Gohan yells at videl... At this point the story just sounds Grimm and edgy/dark. This isn't DBZ, this feels more like future saga than the happy, light-hearted DBZ.
i mean dbz is more edgy/grim than db anyway, the future saga IS still a part of it, i don't think it needs to go to 11 in that, but i think it could be made to work
Idk why so many people are finding Gohan having mental issues so absurd. It should be surprising he lasted without any visible damage to his mind at all. This boy had barely begun to live, been kidnapped and forced to fend for himself in order to fight alien invaders, watched his father, master and friends die before his eyes multiple times, and had his own father throw him under the bus to fight a bio android, giving him a fucking senzu bean, and had to pull off the impossible by running on pure emotional adrenaline to save the earth and all living things. And all of that before he hit puberty. I think you'd have some PTSD too if you had your neck snapped by an alien cheerleader at the tender age of 5.
@@dmas7749 Plus he fucks up the Goku/Vegeta fight. Completely missing the point. Bad fan fic

I actually like how inconsistent and random the Buu arc feels. I remember, on my first watch, that the narrative felt unpredictable and I loved feeling surprised and entertained throughout the whole thing.
Although this holds truth to it. There is no rewatch value, because you understand that nothing is building off of anything else. Just failed attempts after failed attempts. Mix in the cockiness from mystic Gohan and both fusions, it leaves us with a very annoying arc

Or any Saga
Videl and Mr. Satan are such amazingly written characters in the original Buu saga if you think about it. Toriyama knew what he was doing with human characters. I even liked tien’s minor role in the buu and android’s sagas. The other human characters were written well too, if you enjoy yamcha’s comedic role and krillins character development in early z. In my opinion they’re all supporting characters written perfectly. Just wish tiencha from budokai 2 was an actual thing in the original buu arc lol. Maybe a buu absorption form?
This is why I love Abridged. TFS adore Tenshinhan and take every opportunity to give him his moments.
Would love to also see Piccolo having a role in this. Not being a weakling like he was in the buu saga.
Ikr, i hate that he didn't even had the Chance to have a single Opponent in this arc.
Not even fighting in babidis spaceship, that would have been the least they Could do for him.
Hold on a minute...
YOU WANT TO SHOW CHI CHI GIVING BIRTH TO GOTEN?!
You know maybe the buu arc wasn't so bad after all!
That's gross mate.

Didnt laugh
*Not funny didn't laugh*
This is good but I feel like supreme kai was a bit forgotten
But how much did he really do besides tell them about Babidi and get washed by Buu?
You’ve Seen me before who?
Yea that’s one of my complaints about the original as well.
The only thing SK did was let Gohan get drained. He was created as a bad plot device.
He’s awful
He was a plot deviece for goku in original anyways like coran he doesn't do any substantial fighting in the series so he was already on the back burner.
Gohan: Dont worry about me Videl, I've got plot armor.
Videl: *laughs in anime*
Videl is sort of important because without her Gohan wouldn't have entered the tournament meaning his energy couldn't have been stolen and taken back for goku and the others to figure out where babidi and dabura were.
Eh, you can easily substitute that by having a random flyer run into Gohan's face on the way to school. Her purpose really wasn't all that significant
We could combine the Great Sayaman and the arc's end by using him as the Hero who inspires the people to power the Spirit Bomb.
WIth this Gohan will be more relevant, get more powerful, but notice he cannot do everything on his own, like his father did prior.
Not only he trains with the boys but become a symbol for the Earth.
Finally by marrying Videl and entering Hercule's family (Mr Satan) he can make the Budokai Tournament a beacon for Martial Artists AND aspiring heroes.
Thus he starts a legacy for the humans train and get stronger (later it can misfire and make them take heroes for granted, but that's another story).
This would settle Gohan as not filling the STRONGEST FIGHTER role, but down the path as the LEADER and SYMBOL we would later see him in DB SUPER.
What’s there for Mr. Satan then?
@@federicoarmada8775 he can still be the bridge to fat Buu. He's already considered a champion and hero for the Cell Games. He grows as a human and teaches a lesson by bonding with the enemy, even if by mistake at first.
lfestevao I really REALLY like. But then Mr. Satan has no reason to exist
@@erikwilliams1562 this time Gohan is gone with the kids, Mr Satan will be pushed to face Buu. They will bond as normal. Something triggers Evil Buu (we can use the dog scene). The clash of 2 Buus ends up killing Satan. This makes the Good Buu lose his will to fight and is absorbed.
Later when everyone is resurrected, Mr Satan is the one to try to reach Fat Buu inside, that's how he comes out again. No need for inside Buu shenanigans.
OR if you want to keep it, Satan could be the one that wants to be absorbed to rescue Fat Buu, because Dragon Balls cannot split both Buus essence, so it cannot bring back only one.
I understand that you find a lot of it pointless, but introducing important characters like Videl through a montage seems kind of Lazy. If she is Gohan's first real friend, I feel like more time should be spent on that. Also, you got rid of that tender moment between Vegeta and Trunks before the Prince's sacrifice.
Could of happen in another arc. I mean vegeta and trunks.
Maybe instead of a montage it could be a whole episode.
Also removing trunks being able to hit vegeta *before* he goes Majin is extremely important. It shows vegeta's growth as a character from the earlier arcs, showing a small amount of compassion for his son, a foreshadowing that he'll be willing to sacrifice himself for his loved ones, that despite his best efforts he still has a heart.
@@innegativeion isn't that heavily foreshadowed in other scenes? Even if you take out the trunks punching him scene we still have undeniable proof that this guy has a heart. Future Trunks had a hole punched into his chest and Vegeta lost his damn mind. Frieza was close to his goal of finally wiping everyone out and Vegeta was crying/pleading to his worst enemy to end this nightmare. Despite how much he wants to act like a villain the guy has a very strict code of honor. He would not allow Goku to die by the hands of Android 19 even though doing so would potentially make his life easier in the long run. No Goku means less people capable of stopping him from doing whatever the fuck he wants. We see him actually Comfort Kid Gohan after Goku's supposed death on Namek in his own Saiyan warrior way. I see where you're coming from but I feel like its downplaying Vegeta's character to imply that the removal of one scene completely eliminates everything else built up prior to that point.
@@CombatSportsNerd There is optic distance between the sagas in DragonBall. All those things are good marks of vegeta's character growth, but in good storytelling you need to consider not only what happens but when it happens.
Vegeta agreeing to take his son to the park occurs days before he goes Majin. Vegeta comforting kid Gohan occurs years before that. It is very important that vegeta has a moment of tenderness *very soon before* he goes Majin to reinforce his decision to sacrifice himself later. That is consistent characterization, and it's what makes the final explosion scene hit so hard.
Another thing important about the trunks gravity chamber scene is paralism. Vegeta hits his son in the gravity chamber out of anger and instinct, an inability to separate himself from his pride. Then later, he strikes his son in cold calculation to save his life.
I like this but I would change one thing. I'd make Goku's appearance in the world tournament a secret, like when Goku fought his Grandpa Gohan. The difference is that Goku's energy has been shielded musically by Supreme Kai because Goku is actually there on a mission from the Kai's to help locate and possibly stop Buu if worse came to worse. It would make the tournament so much fun like original Dragonball. You get to see match ups you wouldn't normally see like Krillin vs Vegeta (2nd round match) , Gohan vs 18, Piccolo vs. Goku in disguise (he realizes it's Goku when he recognizes Goku's fighting style and keeps the secret) and Yamcha vs Vegeta (1st round match - Yamcha loses but he kind of gets Vegeta's respect). Then in the final fight have it be between Gohan and Goku. Goku gets Gohan to push past his limits again purposely and that's when the Majin's attack and Goku lets it happen warning everyone who wants to help to stay back and trust in Goku. Then everything unfolds from there.
"And everything goes black."

Loool it happened to me too
Great stuff lad.
Just the start with Goten & Gohan was emotional
i actually had a lil tear in my eye, beatiful shit
I mean this in the nicest way, but giving characters PTSD, panic attacks or anxiety is the modern lazy attempt at "depth" in high action stories. DBZ is operatic and melodramatic and doesn't have time for actual mental health issues. The show is and always has played out entirely in the "now", and to constantly shift into flashbacks kind of misunderstands the source material.
Also, too much selling on Gohan's part. Either spreading out the action between other participants or putting less emphasis on Gohan would allow you to show the relevant beats and tones without constantly needing to have Gohan be knocked out. Kinda falling on the same problems the original had by forgetting all the great supporting cast to make it the Goku show.
I agree with the PTSD thing, but in Gohan’s case is completely believable
After all, he is kind of the reason his father had to sacrifice himself and he was just a child too. That is reason enough for a trauma even in Dragon Ball
@Zoe Kin I know this comment is a month old but this is my first time seeing the video and it really doesn't work because Gohan has already seen Piccolo, who he spent almost all of saiyan saga with die in front of him, and Krillin, who he spent all of frieza saga with die in front of him. So no, giving Gohan PTSD is a lazy attempt at giving him depth. And Dragon Ball was never a show about depth and deep tones to begin with
I also don't agree with taking out any of the Majin Buu fights
Or story part post Vegeta
They were actually good
Mental illness isn't a writing crutch, that makes no fucking sense.
PTSD can absolutely be a writing crutch. It's often written by people who have no actual experience with it for people who have no actual experience with it. However, I don't think that applies here since all of the groundwork has already been laid out.
@@KingVentus I don't think those scenarios are the same. First, when Goku and Piccolo died during the Saiyan saga, Gohan was VERY young, and at least in Goku's case he definitely didn't even fully understand what had happened. In all 3 deaths though, there was no lasting impact. Goku dies, Gohan gets dragged away by Piccolo to train and then Goku comes back. Piccolo dies, they go to Namek and then Piccolo comes back. Krillin dies, they defeat Frieza and then Krillin comes back. Goku dies, Gohan defeats Cell, Gohan grows up, but Goku still doesn't come back (at this point in the story anyway). Also, Goku's death was a direct result of Gohan's actions. Goku and Krillin both died simply because they were killed. Piccolo died protecting Gohan, but it wasn't like Gohan made a conscious choice to be too weak to defend himself against Nappa.
Honestly, I would be more surprised that Gohan didn't get PTSD if not for the fact that he was written by Toriyama. He seems to idolize how Goku stays the same regardless of everything he's been through and Toriyama very clearly wanted Gohan to inherit that trait. Notice, almost ALL of the supporting cast has been through varying levels of positive change arcs with Goku as the catalyst and then they settle into a static character that never changes again.
Vegeta is the ONLY good guy to have any attachments to his past whatsoever. I think this is simultaneously why fans love him and why Toriyama doesn't care for him very much.
That part when gohan heard about the fusion dance I was like NO WAY this story is amazing how did you come up with this story
You got to be kidding me...yesterday night..probably 8 hours ago I was searching for "rewrite of gohan"...and now I see it..
This is pretty interesting. Gohan having PTSD is definitely an interesting idea considering all the shit he went through. Take a look at the Saiyan saga. He was 5 when all that happened. Half Saiyan or not that'd be pretty traumatising for someone that age and that's not even counting the Cell and Frieza sagas.
But he shouldn't have it its been seven years!
@@leonardofarias8843 PTSD can be weird. In some cases it can take years for symptoms to appear. I do get your point though.
