When I was a kid my psychologist explained to me in great depth that some people don't have an inner monologue, that always seemed crazy to me. He would tell me about how some people cant imagine things, like, they cant visualize things in their mind, also crazy to me. For me, its like the inner voice is me and I just sort of, like, exist and conversate with myself within my own head. Like there's me on the outside then there's me in my head, but they don't feel like the same being, not in like a DID way but in a way like...like you exist physically but simultaneously you exist metaphysically in your mind, at the same time, but as different people... I don't know If im really articulating my thoughts well but I love thinking about this kind of stuff. ✌ This episode was some good food for thought, man
this is exactly how I feel!! I always talk through my thoughts with the voice in my head and it feels like there's two different beings bc it's always a two-way conversation where one is replying to the other??
Yes, I work through stuff with my inner self, to see if it works or not. I have often thought if people knew the real me,...the twisty wired raw unwashed version of me...they would not like the real me.
I definitely have a continuous "inner chatter" most of the time. I always hear this voice when I read. However, there are times when I'm thinking without the (my) voice. I'll think in visualizations, sensations, memories, or emotions. This is how I remember thinking as a child. I never thought in words as a kid. Now as an adult, I think both ways about 50/50.
The voice in my head is constant and automatic. It says every word I read or any word I hear and all my thoughts. I also have aphantasia so I do not have a visual imagination so instead of picturing something in my mind, I describe it in precise detail. The voice never stops, its always saying something, having conversations, arguments, etc.
My inner voice is something like yours, but much less persistent. I also have what I call almost-aphantasia, because I can picture things, but only with great effort, composing the image one part of an element at a time (often with an odd result). It will never happen automatically. I don't get precise descriptions of things when I think about them, like you do. I don't visualize or mentally describe my living room, for example, I just know what it's like. I'm not really sure what's going on in my subconscious, but I just know. It's been interesting to hear your experience with this and think about how it compares and contrasts with my own.
@@dpreeper things I've seen before and memories im similar. I dont imagine them i just somehow know what they look like. I know what an apple looks like and I know what a beach looks like but I somehow can't create an image. I can draw things with varying degrees of success which helps a lot. I also hate reading because while a lot of people can imagine people and places and objects written about, I would have no idea and have no way to comprehend what its like.
That's so interesting. I read about aphantasia earlier this year and couldn't wrap my head around it, especially the concept of not having visual memories. Then I met a person who had it and I could ask her some questions about it. What's it like for you guys? Are you just unable to picture images or sound as well? (Some people are even able to imagine smells) and do you have visual dreams? When and how did you find out about it? Answer if you like. I would also like to know if Rhett or Link have aphantiasa. Or synesthesia. Sorry for the rambling, it's just so fascinating how different basic human experiences can be for different people.
@@marmotarchivist For me it only affects my ability to bring up an image. But I do still dream visually, as do most people with aphantasia. And I can imagine touch and sound easily. I found out just a few years ago, in my 30's. After hearing yet again a phrase something like, "Picture the scene", I had to ask my husband if he could actually see anything. He could! This led to a long and very interesting conversation and some Google research on this difference. (Since I didn't know the term aphantasia, I had to Google "no mind's eye".) I always imagined that people must think in different ways, but I had no idea how different I was than the "norm". And I still don't feel it holds me back in any way, but I continue to find the concept of thinking more normally/visually very fascinating.
You're not wrong, theres the you that does things by instinct and there's a critical, moralizing agent. It's the ego psychology and whether or not the details are correct i believe the basis is right. Also most people play a role depending on the situation, that means there's also a raw, private, personal you that usually only lives inside your head. There are psychological conditions where people almost don't have this private version and their whole life is an act. Also conditions where there's no moralizing agent which in turn allows the private you to do whatever it desires, often linked to psychotic behaviour.
Rhett is misinterpreting the "voice" as something equivalent to a third party reading to him and his brain interpreting the information before forming a response which isnt what I believe is the case and the study somewhat shows that. The "voice" is the brain taking in the information and formulating the respone its not another step added in like passing a package down a line of hands, as the "voice" reads "aloud" the brain is already interpreting the information given to it by the body
The "voice" inside of my head when I'm reading is necessary for me. Yes, it slows me down, however I can't comprehend what I read without it having this "voice". The "voice" also has no sound in my head. What I mean by that is it doesn't take a form or specific accent. It only comes across as a voice for comprehension. This voice doesn't sound like anyone, it just sounds like words being processed together to for information or ideas.
I think whether you hear a voice or not mostly depends on your psychological interest in the person or character who actually wrote these lines and/or who they are meant to represent
No Rhett, the voice in my head does not slow me down. I read really quickly and the voice sometimes (if I read way too quick) it skips the unecessary words but I still process it as normal. It's not a thing you make happen, it's an automatic process.
Its the same for me, constant inner monologue, everything I read or think I hear myself saying in my own head except for like you said when Its someone else's voice, like If Im reading something someone else wrote and Im very familiar with their voice, I hear their voice as I read it.
'Conscious awareness' is becoming aware of the voice inside your head..and what it says. For most, it is very critical. Meditation can be used to observe said voice, examine and shift one's consciousness. I can’t imagine what not hearing my thought-voice would be like. And the voice doesn’t have a sounds but it feels like my own. Like I know it’s me but it wouldn’t sound like my voice does when I speak.
If I remember correctly, teleportation is possible, but just really... Really hard to accomplish. It has been done at a smaller scale (even things like atoms DO have mass of their own). The way that current teleportation would work, is that you have point A and a point B. You scan item A, send the information to point B, and build the exact copy of item A, at a point B. This is possible in theory, on a bigger scale. Its not "exact" teleportation, like we see in the movies, but in theory we could scan a human being, here on Earth, and "build him" in Mars, for example. The main concerns are that is it ethically right. Does the soul exist? If so, can it be "copied". And what about the original who was scanned. Now there are two of you. Do both of you have the same right as humans? Is It okay just to "kill off" the original one. This get really dark when we talk about ethics and morality.
Just a thought. Time travel wouldn’t be moving molecules or particles but bending time and space. In other wards you would be sitting still and somehow you would bringing that point in space and time to you.🤷🏻
It absolutely slows me down. I wish I didn't have the voice constantly narrating all of my thoughts and everything I read. It would be lovely to be able to get into that zone where I'm just taking in the information without processing it verbally in my head. That happens sometimes when I zone out but most of time is always words
I'm tri-lingual. I hear my own voice when reading each language. Inner monologue and reading is the same voice. I can't avoid doing that. I will not retain info if i dont have my voice.
I agree that 3am is middle of the night, and 4am is morning. I was trying to figure out why I thought that, and I think it may be partly because here, in the pre-dawn in the summer, about an hour before the sun rises (so between 4 and 5am) all the birds wake up and sing for about 20 minutes. It sounds like there are hundreds of them, all singing at the same time, and it's much louder than during the day. Then it's like they all go back to sleep, and wake up again when the sun rises.
The internal voice when you read is called subvocalization. It tends to limit the speed at which we read so many speed reading techniques try to minimize subvocalization. This is why we tend to read at about the same speed that we can talk. I would think it has something to do with the ability to talk about what we have read, or maybe we are talking to that other personality in our head.
I’m sure this is an odd place to leave a comment like this but I just wanted to say that I appreciate you guys so much. Rhett and Link, you two have really been an inspiration for me in life. just from hearing the way you approach situations in your daily lives and feeling like I’ve gotten to know you through these podcasts and your GMM videos has really acted like a role model for me in a way. I’m 27 years old and have been following your content for a while now and feel like I’ve adopted a lot of your mindset in life and it has really benefited me. I’m currently in a happy relationship and have a good job and just feel a general sense of accomplishment and happiness where I am in this world currently and I feel that I owe that partially to the influence you guys have had on my life so I just wanted to give you a sincere thank you, i love you guys and all your content, keep up the good work.
I’ve always noticed a little voice inside my head, anytime I would do anything, I think that’s just one of the reasons why I’m so relaxed all of the time. I feel like it’s just CRAZY how some people only have their own personal thoughts 💭 which could cause them to do crazy things. & the craziest thing is, that I’m actually a survivor of a Brain tumor & should have lost it but I still feel like I have it, meaning the voice inside my head except I can control it more.
Ok I've been subscribed to Ear Biscuits almost since it started, I didn't really watch it but I had to subscribe anyways just because yall are awesome. But the religious one caught my eye and I've been spending all my free time watching them ever since. Along with everything else mythical of course. I just had to put it out there how much I appreciate the work you do. There aren't words to describe how much you guys help people regardless of if you're trying or not. As a matter of fact I'm not sure I'd even be here if it weren't for you. So thanks, and keep the good vibes vibing 😁😁
they should look into the debate around internal monologs, as it sounds like rhett doesn't have one! would be pretty interesting to hear them talk about this more!
"the world's first ever monster truck front flip" has forever been a sentence ingrained into my brain to be sung in alex turner's voice, and now so has rhett's monster truck announcer voice saying "it's like simone biles"
When I read something I definitely hear a voice that is a more fluid version of myself. If I read something from someone I know, I hear it in their voice. It doesn't really slow me down, unless I start mouthing the words along with my thoughts, but I've actually practiced myself out of that habit.
I think in a combination of pictures and a voice. The voice can take over my auditory area to the point that I can’t listen and type at the same time. I have conversations in my head with the voice that does the thinking and reading almost constantly. (I have dyslexia and dyspraxia.)
I’m a very fast reader when I read books. And I always hear a voice . Whether it’s mine or the character. If I sit here and think. I hear a voice personally cause I’m having a conversation with myself . Same with reading emails and texts. If it’s an article I hear my own voice reading it
“find the joy in what’s happening right now” wow when rhett comes for you in the podcast 😂 this is why i love listening to ear biscuits along with gmm 💜
Thank you Rhett for telling me about and drawing attention to the witching hour, as I am watching this at 3:00am and have actually been feeling weird at this time of morning/night lately.
My inside voice is continuous until I sleep. Always constantly some form of thoughts with the voice. Multiple idea I don’t even realize it’s happening. During stressful situations it’s overwhelming. It’s like hearing your thoughts two times over?
I have an internal voice I hear 24/7 that I hear when thinking, reading, writing, dreaming, etc. Even when reading a street sign, a video title, or numbers. I can't turn it off and on, it's always on and it's just automatic. It doesn't take up extra time. I can read super fast but I'm hearing my voice/character voices/friends voices (depending on what I'm reading or thinking or writing) at the same time. What fascinates me is how my internal voice doesn't sound exactly like my physical voice, yet I consider it to be the real authentic Me. Maybe that's why I don't like the sound of my physical voice, because it doesn't sound like the real me. #EarBiscuits
First time i comment on anything on RUclips. But is not your inner monologe just like a thought, it is as fast as you are able to think so it does not slow you down. For example my inner monologue does not slow down my reading. Growing up with Heathenry (Ásatrú) i convey my perception of it with the story of when Þjálfi lost while racing against Hugi, which unbeknownst to him was the personification of thought.
Quarantine is rough. Especially for this long, and during this heat. I just turn on 10 hours of thunderstorms on repeat, and hope I can sleep until it's all over.
The biggest question is that if we hear a voice in our head when we're thinking, or we can think that someone is talking in our minds... then do deaf people hear these voices aswell ...and if they do ...who's voice is that?
It's amazing they don't hear a voice when they read. When I read, I understand and comprehend based on the voice in my head reading it. I simply cannot picture how one could read without this voice in your head and how it could be fun at all.
Im gonna get honey for these ear biscuits I went to a monster truck rally and dirt bike 2 stroke competition indoors during this pandemic and they're so cool! Monster trucks and dirt bikes need to make a huge comeback! theyre so perfect here.
For the most part, I don't have an internal monologue or voice, but there are a few exceptions. The only time I hear something like that is when I'm reading or when I am angry. I can read relatively fast but probably not as fast as I would if I didn't have that voice. When I am upset, my inner voice allows me to say the things I want to say outwardly. Mostly what is going on in my head are visual thoughts/pictures, memories, or just music that I can't get out of there. Didn't realize that wasn't how everyone processed things until probably last year.
The most difficult part of teleporting is letting go of where you are. If you phase shift first, it's much easier to teleport (and also harder to detect)
I think what rhett is saying is that when he is reading something, he's just reading. It doesn't become some other voice that is not the standard inner monologue reading voice. Like he doesn't necessarily hear it as if it's being spoken to him, he's just reading it normally.
I have a voice inside my head, even as I type this now. I usually think in words but I have a more basic image based thinking kind of behind that voice in my head.
53:00 not everyone hears their own voice while thinking/ reading. I don’t think you two do. I do and learned this fact when I was like 19 and was really blown away.
every mexican household ive ever eaten dinner in made their own CORN tortillas and if the served guac it was avocado pico de gillo (sometimes with sour cream)and squeezed lime...finished with freshly ground sea salt...every now and hen they'd throw some chilies in there

That voice is called an Internal monologue! I recently found out that some people don't have this voice in their head and they use things like images to process their thoughts. It is super interesting!
For me, not only do I hear that voice narrating my thoughts or what I write, I can make it sound like someone else. I can literally think in Rhett's voice, or Link's voice, or anyone if I hear their voice enough.
the toy was called "The Animal" I wanted one soo bad I used to dream about it after seeing the ad .. then the next Christmas I got to play with one at my friends house and it was so underwhelming ..it didn't live up to my imagination
also to Rhett's concern about speed reading, I'm not by any means a record holder or anything but I am a pretty fast reader when I need to be and the voice in my head doesn't slow me down or anything it just goes with the speed of my reading! I read like 500-700 wpm with comprehension and the voice in my head just reads at that rate!!
I had a flight a 7 AM and I needed to travel over an hour and a half to get the airport, I decided to leave at 3:30 to get there in time. I stayed awake until around 3 AM (which is not a problem for me), then I laid in bed for about 15 minutes to take a quick nap, and took those last 15 minutes to get ready and leave. If I had to leave at 4, I would have probably tried to get a few more hours of sleep, but I'm normally a night owl so it's hard to say.
Doc’s ability to determine the exact position of the earth in the past is FAR FAR easier than determining how to travel through time with a DeLorean in the 80s.

I would think it has something to do with the ability to talk about what we have read, or maybe we are talking to that other personality in our head.
When Rhett made that little laugh after he said 4 20 he sounded like Chad 🤣🤣🤣
I think the easiest way to explain it is I'm talking to myself without actually speaking. And that's how I read or contemplate most every situation.
I think most people agree with Rhett about the 3am vs 4am
I feel like Rhett wouldn't say screw you in a face to face confrontation.
Just putting it out there
When I read something I definitely hear a voice that is a more fluid version of myself.
Uploaded 30 seconds ago I'm impressed with myself for catching this podcast this soon
I can’t even comprehend how you would think without an inner voice
I’m a very fast reader when I read books. And I always hear a voice . Whether it’s mine or the character. If I sit here and think. I hear a voice personally cause I’m having a conversation with myself . Same with reading emails and texts. If it’s an article I hear my own voice reading it
“find the joy in what’s happening right now” wow when rhett comes for you in the podcast 😂 this is why i love listening to ear biscuits along with gmm 💜
Before rhett even said it i said 4am is morning & 3am is still night
Thank you Rhett for telling me about and drawing attention to the witching hour, as I am watching this at 3:00am and have actually been feeling weird at this time of morning/night lately.
My inside voice is continuous until I sleep. Always constantly some form of thoughts with the voice. Multiple idea I don’t even realize it’s happening. During stressful situations it’s overwhelming. It’s like hearing your thoughts two times over?
The only thing it’s not connected to is movements. Thankfully
Watching this at 3-4 am making me paranoid
I feel like Rhett is really feeling himself since he started wearing the ring on his index finger lol
"Jumper" he could only teleport to places he had seen or been to.
Oh my god I’ve been doing laundry for a half hour and still have at least an hour left. So glad I don’t have to do it in silence anymore.
I was doing laundry too 😆 Totally get it
The point of reference are space time coordinates
#EarBiscuits
oooh yeah! I am painting me house n this is playing in BG now! Love you both! Missing GMM so much its a ritual for me
i love how rhett goes on and on and then link is just like "ok so but the original question was-" and rhett just keeps going on to something else.
I'm with Rhett, my internal dialogue is off when I'm reading, if the voice in my head is talking while I'm reading I'm not really paying attention
Rhett absolutely nailed Time Travel
Quarantine is rough. Especially for this long, and during this heat. I just turn on 10 hours of thunderstorms on repeat, and hope I can sleep until it's all over.
This show makes me happier every time y'all upload
I'm gonna try harder to find joy in little things. Thanks for the inspiration 💜
Another reasone to love Rhett&Link! 😊
I love listening to you guys goin to bed idk why but sometimes the Convos get interesting and it keeps me up. 🤣😂
The biggest question is that if we hear a voice in our head when we're thinking, or we can think that someone is talking in our minds... then do deaf people hear these voices aswell ...and if they do ...who's voice is that?
Rhetts definition of “infinite teleportation flight” is actually just “falling, with style”. Lol.
In the WWE there is live zoom calls and you can actually here the crowd. That's free!
It's amazing they don't hear a voice when they read. When I read, I understand and comprehend based on the voice in my head reading it. I simply cannot picture how one could read without this voice in your head and how it could be fun at all.
1:53 “caprice classic, monster trunk” if you know, you know
I think most people think in images, but I have aphantasia. I think in words.
The Animal Truck from the 80's.
Yup. I had one too. Had totally forgotten it til now. haha
Im gonna get honey for these ear biscuits
I went to a monster truck rally and dirt bike 2 stroke competition indoors during this pandemic and they're so cool!
Monster trucks and dirt bikes need to make a huge comeback! theyre so perfect here.
3:45am with my beer and tree and ear biscuits. Perfect.
I love Rhett's hat
If link did some gymnastics in his spare time he could be a rock tumbler tumbler
We were on our way to the NC State Fair Grounds to get fair food when we started listening to this. We're now here and looking at the Dorton Arena!
Rhett: the teleporting where you can see was from the movie Jumper, I believe.
Answer to your question, Rhett, space-time continuum. Like using a navigational point of reference. It’s referential for you, therefore directional
I have a voice inside my head, even as I type this now. I usually think in words but I have a more basic image based thinking kind of behind that voice in my head.
53:00 not everyone hears their own voice while thinking/ reading. I don’t think you two do. I do and learned this fact when I was like 19 and was really blown away.
every mexican household ive ever eaten dinner in made their own CORN tortillas and if the served guac it was avocado pico de gillo (sometimes with sour cream)and squeezed lime...finished with freshly ground sea salt...every now and hen they'd throw some chilies in there
EWW! Corn tortillas are gross
I listened to this already when it came out. I tell you what it's a different experience watching it lol
I agree
Always is... Lol
Versace’s death was considered “assasination”. Link’s definition is on point.
The toy IS called the Claw. It wasn’t remote operated. It moved on its own. I’m 36 years old and I had got it Christmas of 1990. No Remote Control was the cool part. Link almost remembered. Mine was passed on to my brother but he broke it. I remember dudes.
Yes I do. An ant crawled in my ear a few years ago now I can hear it constantly judging me. Thx for the reminder
Its called The Animal Monster Truck Toy! The one with the claws, so cool lol
I had the monster truck with the claws in the tires when I was a kid
Is it “wooves” or “woofes”?
Its "woolfs"
I pronouce with a light L sound in there.
oh my god they discovered their thoughts
I heard "Jenna" and I thought it was Jen, I got so excited. God, I miss his arch-nemesis so much
love this podcast, theres always so many intresting topics
That voice is called an Internal monologue! I recently found out that some people don't have this voice in their head and they use things like images to process their thoughts. It is super interesting!
I agree with Rhett. 5 a.m. is the cut off. Many nights I am up till 3 or 4 a.m. doing school work or playing video games!
"Do you have fruits?" Sounded like Damnyell lol
For me, not only do I hear that voice narrating my thoughts or what I write, I can make it sound like someone else. I can literally think in Rhett's voice, or Link's voice, or anyone if I hear their voice enough.
the toy was called "The Animal" I wanted one soo bad I used to dream about it after seeing the ad .. then the next Christmas I got to play with one at my friends house and it was so underwhelming ..it didn't live up to my imagination
“Make up your mind, to tumble some rocks”.....
I kinda love that Link.
also to Rhett's concern about speed reading, I'm not by any means a record holder or anything but I am a pretty fast reader when I need to be and the voice in my head doesn't slow me down or anything it just goes with the speed of my reading! I read like 500-700 wpm with comprehension and the voice in my head just reads at that rate!!
Who else thinks only one of them had the toy monster truck, but they both remember “having it” and “playing with it” lol
Love this Sunday morning routine. Love y’al. Never stop doing #EarBiscuits
Dude, sometimes that 15 minutes is so refreshing that it's confusing lol
Doc’s ability to determine the exact position of the earth in the past is FAR FAR easier than determining how to travel through time with a DeLorean in the 80s.
