As someone who was raised by atheists who celebrated Christmas, I can say that while I understand why people who have had such strong religious associations with it might say that a secular celebration seems... vacuous or just lesser, I feel like an emphasis on family and friendship and the communal decision to add magic to a world that usually has none can still be pretty meaningful. When you don’t believe in a higher power, family, friends and culture and how you interact with them while get your moment of life can be the things that weigh on you the way that religion weighs on others.
I was checking to see if anyone had said that before writing more or less the same thing. Somebody had. The secular Christmas is still a wonderful holiday - the most wonderful time of the year - and isn't lacking or insufficient in any way for not being connected to a religion.
Beautiful comment📓
I totally agree, that's how I've been raised and it's still my favorite holiday because of the meaning I feel from family and friends and the celebration of joy.
I just connect Christmas to family and the act of giving things to those you love, instead of religion.
I agree I have super powerful memories and feelings associated with christmas and we were never religious.
“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”
This quote really resinated with me during my journey
you mention being good, virtuous, noble, just. without God or "gods" those things dont exist. there is no such thing as good, bad, or moral.
What an amazing quote, be a good person regardless of the presence or lack of god in your life. There are two emotions, love and fear. We all have the power to choose to love ❤️
Listening to Ear Biscuits has made me respect and appreciate the two of them on a whole new level.
Me too. I was just thinking about how incredibly smart and in tune they are with themselves. It truly is amazing and also in depth subjects like this you can see their own personalities.
@@ExileOfGods me too
@@ellenahgarcia5319 Thank you.
SAME!!!
They’re pretty great aren’t they!? 😀
Link: We want to forge..
Rhett: Swords
I don't know why this made me laugh so hard. 😂
It might have been funnier because I knew it was coming.
In any case, I would totally watch them forge swords.
Because we can all picture Rhett out in a garage forging swords and other medieval weaponry
Just don't hand Link one lol
I cant believe all the ppl that watch GMM but not Ear Biscuits 🤨😑🤔 I've never been a pod cast girl but I look forward to this even more than GMM🔥 🥳
It's possible that those people would rather see them in character form (GMM) and not their real selves (EB).
Totally agree with you, this is good stuff.
I recently started watching ear biscuits. But I didn't before because while I love GMM, I can only enjoy the energy of it for a 15 minute video. I thought ear biscuits was just a longer extension of that. But once I finally listened, it's refreshingly calm and interesting.
Doesn’t matter how interesting something is, I’m usually asleep within 20 minutes. Played it 3x already.

Guys, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for the Santa spoiler warning 👍🏻😂 my 6 year old was literally walking in at that very moment! Never hit pause so fast lol Y’all are the best x
Yeah my twin six year olds and their six year old cousin were right next to me 😅 I’m glad they warned us
Same! My 6 year old was within earshot, and I managed to pause on time. Really appreciate that spoiler alert for sure! I'll listen to the rest when she goes to bed tonight. :)
Awee
I just don't know why so many people feel the need to say it period. Whether kids are/should be listening/watching or not why do so many YTers & even tv shows feel the need to say those words, spoiler alert or not? They don't even carefully hint around it just for the adults anymore, they just spoil it for kids everywhere for no reason!
So, instead of y’all’s 6-yr-olds hearing the truth, y’all rather have other 6 & 7-yr-olds taunt y’all’s about it this year or next?
Don’t act like that’s not going to happen. They will blame you.
There’s your warning.
Rhett calling the Easter bunny a weak ass holiday mascot 😂 y'all are too funny!
My parents dont practice any religion at all but we celebrated Christmas. To us it was all about family, love, and giving
That’s sweet ❤️
That's exactly the same thing my family does
As well it should be! 🙂
Love Rhett's nonchalance. "I lie to my kids all the time."
I mean, what parent hasn't?? Just saying.. LOL
I sing in my church choir and play flute, and singing with the choir and the congregation is the thing that I miss most during social distancing. It added so much happiness and depth to my life.
episodes like these are really comforting. just the occasional reminder that this is just something that happens and while there is some internal shame or guilt, the act of being this way isnt shameful itself
I grew up Buddhist and we've always celebrated Christmas. My mom is still "Santa" to us 4 girls and we are all adults. To us, Christmas was always about family, love, traditions, food and happiness. It's my favorite holiday. Now with my inlaws, we celebrate Christmas for the same exact reasons.
That’s so sweet😊
Thank you Rhett, for the honesty about the repercussions of Covid
I'm so happy you guys opened up about your journey. It has allowed more honest conversations like this one. I really appreciate and relate to what you guys are talking about.
Good for both Rhett and Link for being honest. Not with us....but for being honest with themselves. Hardest. Thing. Ever.
There's something so refreshing about listening to two educated people that you agree with have a meaningful conversation about this. I was brought up evangelical and still get told I'm "living in sin" on a regular basis (as a 34 year old woman)
so, thanks for that guys.
Hey R&L, I just want to let you know that I really appreciate and respect you for going into your experiences and story. I enjoy listening to you both, and trying to understand where you're at spiritually, because like with the whole music thing, parts of your stories resonate with me, too. I had a similar upbringing and spiritual deconstruction, and then a bit of a development to a place of more openness, and it helps my journey to listen to you guys talking about yours. Merry Holidays
Im 20 years old currently, and I had a mixed household where my Dad grew up religious but lost it overtime and is very critical of religion now and my mom who is very religious and has grown her catholic faith even more recently. So i have always thought about these things ever since a child and I actually reached the "phase" Rhett is at right now as a young teen because I also find it very freeing and gratifying. Like why categorize something I will never understand or know factual what is true or what is not. Instead I love living my life being open to everything and just having this different type of spiritual experience. Because I think being "open" is a spiritual experience in it of itself.
The Muppet Christmas Carol!
I was just about to say this! Hands down my favorite Christmas movie. Got feels, laughs and lessons.
Best. Christmas. Movie. Ever.
Just watched it, so good 😍
That's the only Christmas film I've watched so far. Love it!
@@julesafool shut up, please
this was recorded BEFORE thanksgiving. who knows how old rhett and link really are.
We know for a fact that they're in their forty's
Aniket D I don’t understand this comment lol
Untold eons, potentially
This made me burst into laughter after this heavy episode
@@Dark_Minded18 whoosh
Rhett needed to hit people with that Covid fact, your actions WILL cause someone’s loved ones to die, people need to understand this more I think. Thank you Rhett, from someone who’s lost people during this global crisis
Some people have elderly relatives or parents and this maybe their last xmas think about that for a minute .. not everyone has the luxury of next year
@@Lokkodog yeah but visiting could cause the end or their life. If you go and they die of covid you have to live with knowing what you did, and you have to forever live without that person
I agree so much with Rhett's perspective. I grew up Mormon, no longer believe or practice, but most of my family does. So it's still part of my life. I really believe that it is healthier to take what you can from it, not to be so judgmental or negative. Yes, the stories are made up and it seems ridiculous that people really believe in it. There was a time when I was more resentful and felt misled, felt like members of my former community were so naïve. But why not take yourself off that high horse and look at it in a different way. Not like a believer, not like a disbeliever, but just as something to take in as a human story. The people who wrote it at the time understood the world in such a different way, this was their way of interpreting it. There are always things to learn. Take what you can from it, leave alone what you can't. What does it hurt to try open your mind and see positivity. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, and you don't have to know everything. Thank you for this thoughtful discussion, R&L! 💛
I have a very similar religious upbringing and deconversion story. I think it's about being able to embrace the nostalgia of the holidays (or church, songs, etc...) without judging yourself for it. Thank you guys for being so open about your journey. It makes others like myself feel less alone in our pursuit to find spiritual fulfillment and truth.
The easter bunny is my favorite :(
His role is hiding an easter basket somewhere in the house.
Rhett: The Myrrh Man.
Please tell me I’m not the only one who can’t hear them say “break the seal” anymore without thinking of...something else 😅
Break the seal on their mail
This was my first Ear Biscuits.. Which is weird because I've been watching GMM since the dawn of time, it seems. But I loved this convo so much. It was so real and relatable. Honestly I don't think we or I have enough open conversations like this. It was almost therapeutic to watch you two talk out your processes and I personally hope to have more in depth convos like this with people I care about. I was living vicariously through you both lol. Thank you 🙏🏻
It’s very interesting to hear y’all talk about your mindset from a particular time - being a fan for so long, I can look back at those years and that’s honestly really cool. Especially when it’s a conversation/topic so relatable to me
I think you could make a really good christmas movie
Picture me, sprinting for my phone when they warned they were gonna say Santa isn't real while my 5 yr old looks at me confused
These videos make me think about how I can approach my own journey different. Thanks
Borat is the holiday movie that I will being showing my future kids.
I love the comparison between God and the ocean that Rhett made. Studying mythology there are many religions past and present that view/ed the ocean as a birthplace for the god/s, an expression of the god/s, or in some way a centre of their belief system. Amazing to see others come to that conclusion today
I say both Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Channukah comes at around the same time so Happy Holidays can cover both!
Talking about the beauty of experiencing the ocean without judging it physically...that really resonates with me. My "HUMAN MUST FIGURE OUT EVERYTHING AND JUSTIFY EVERYTHING" hat has been impeding my art, but I realize now that I don't HAVE to explain the reason for my art. Thank you, that...that was really helpful. :)
Why am I just now being recommended this. It’s everything I need lol. Guess I got ALOT to catch up on and a 4 month old that doesn’t sleep haha.
Thanks, once again for letting us into your lives and thought processes.
I feel phase 4 as more of a phasing back to another sort of 1 slowly but with more awareness and deliberation.
I'm on a different and very happy path, more like at my destination, and you seem to be heading further away from where i'm at, but that's cool.
You do you boys.
A great watch/listen.
Have a great festive season everybody. 🎄🎄🎄
This is my first Christmas in “phase 2” as Rhett described it and it was nice to hear this discussion and know I’m not alone in feeling this way.
Love listening to this when I'm getting ready work on Sundays
Over a year, and they are just now questioning if its "the" podcast or "a" podcast 🤣
Has it really been a year since they started with that phase? Time flies
@@corbinnelson1323 I don’t think so
They only started saying it in August. (The 8/2/2020 video version to be exact).
I've been mourning the loss of my "normal Christmas" at my parents for few days now, I have never in my lifetime spent the Christmas anywhere else than either my parents or my mother-in-laws. It looked like we could reasonably safe make it, but as the numbers still climb here and our rules are not to mix too many households I feel we have to step back and spend the Christmas at our place. Today I've had the kiddo yelling at me that I've ruined their holidays at the same time I'm actively trying not to look like I want to cry a whole week of the loss of my normalcy. But it is the right thing to do.
Hopefully there is some silver lining of having a smaller circle of people at Christmas! Its always nice to focus on your partner and children.
@@maplz9314 Yes, and getting to build our own tradition for the holidays is also nice. There's just so much emotions and expectations packed into the way one is used to spend Christmas that when it gets modified without your own initial input it pains for a while. (Especially now, since many ppl are going for it anyway, and I just can't risk it.)
The pandemic is a fraud.
Go celebrate your Christmas.
Xo.
08:28 Link, "...forging our own...."
Rhett, "...swords."
Heehee
The first question I asked my mom when she told me santa wasn't real was "IS GOD REAL?" I was sobbing so upset that she had dare lie to me. She started laughing and said "Of course he is". I honestly think today, that was the beginning of my spiritual journey and questioning mind. I now look at things differently than my mother ever did, and only truly believe what feels right and also that I know nothing. But alas, I will never forget that conversation. Now funny but also very prophetic for me.. 😂
Is this really healthy for you guys? It seems like being able to ramble for over an hour is a really healthy process. No need to cut urself short on ideas. Im always catching myself overtalking and get embarrassed but this seems really therapeutic
You’re too hard on yourself Jess
Link, "We wanna start forging our own..."
Rhett "SWORDS."
Rhett is a man at work just doing his job. :D
Fav podcast in the game !!
If u enjoy comedy there’s a podcast by 2 comedians called the Pete & Sebastian Show. Funny, funny, funny!
This is what I look forward to the most on Sundays especially with my earlier work days!
These types of podcasts are some of my favorite honestly. I grew up not being raised to really care about religion at all, but listening to this makes me really interested in how others have lived their lives and celebrated such impactful holidays like these. These talks seem so helpful for them to figure out who they are as people too, love it!
Rhett talking about getting together and singing as if he’s never heard of concerts is pretty damn funny.
“I plan to feed you.”
Never has there EVER been any sweeter words uttered in history!😁
I love when you guys talk about religion and your past. It's super interesting bc I know nothing about it
Much like your spiritual deconstructions, this put into words a lot of things that I have been thinking about but was not able to articulate fully. Thank you guys again!
I Was having a nightmare and I woke up to this upload, it was very comforting
Thank you
❤
Oh man. Thank you guys so much for this!!
I truly appreciate all perspectives expressed, personally, coming from a lutheranism or evangelical background going through literally quite almost the identical thought process as Rhett a couple days prior to seeing this video is really comforting and reassuring that someone else is not only curious and questioning ideals and the philosophy of religion but not disrespecting those who confide in it and genuinely use it to keep themselves steadfast in their daily life. Thank you both i appreciate you guys more than words can express merry christmas and a happy holidays to all
Rhett is tiptoing up to the void and about to be freed from the cycle of rebirth.
it’s always good to wake up on a beautiful sunday to a new episode a ear biscuits 😭
Richard Rohr is the man, glad to hear Rhett is reading him
Merry Christmas🎄🎁 guys and I'm still hoping this turns into a Prodigal Son Story for the both of you 👍
Love you! Thank you for almost keeping GMM kid friendly and free from politics and religion.
I also love watching EB because its so wholesome and love the religion talk.
You guys took special care with that St Nick spoiler alert and I love y’all for that.
More people need to watch Klaus!!
I just want to thank you so much. Listening to your podcasts on these last months has been really special. I been on a deconstructional journey for a few months now, basically since COVID, and these will be my first Christmas in between stage 2 and 3. All that you said resonated on my mind and in my soul.
When I decided ‘’to jump from de ship’’ (even though it sounds dramatic) I was terrified, and listening to you guys and seeing a lot of comments of people who identifies to this, it makes these experience feel less lonely.
It’s a joy to watch/listen Ear Biscuits
I feel like I got to skip step 3 and go straight to 4 when I watched john greens video talking about religion while I was still in step 2. But I don't think I was ever even in phase 1. I was raised Roman Catholic but was always skeptical
Welcome Rhett, you on this ship now
Both rhett & link: "merry x-mas!" At the very end 🤣
I love Sundays, I look forward to it all week.I live in Western Australia and that's when we get ear biscuits. 💙🌈💫💜
Same! Western Australia and I listen to the podcasts on sunday night while I’m doing stuff xD 💜💜
Die hard is a Christmas movie. Also Elf Is a good one
I like ELF 😃. Buddy the elf. My fave holiday cartoon will always be THE GRINCH, but not the Grinch movie
Who doesnt love these boys!🥰😁
Ikr
True that
I love Theese guys
They good people mayne.
Bad people...thats who
Rhett starting with a logical positivist like mindset and switching to something like a pragmatic mindset is really interesting and it seems like it might shed some light on the human condition and where we can derive meaning.
*INTERESTING*
I’m gonna need y’all to make a hilarious but very meaningful and heartfelt Christmas movie now please. ❤️🎄
Rhett would be a really good therapist
I never trust any advice from anyone who goes to therapy and lives in California.
Link didn't want to lie about a made up thing to his kids at Christmas so they could focus more on the other, bigger, made up thing.
This podcast is perfect for getting through wrapping gifts when you hate wrapping gifts lol
I completely disagree with Rhetts statement that Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie. It takes place on Christmas Eve during a Christmas party!! What other criteria do you need??
I grew up well below the poverty line so we did not ever have Santa and I hated so much the exchanges at school because I could not afford to participate. Now that I have children, we opted out of Santa as a tradition for my family, but we are teaching our kids that each family has traditions and for the families who celebrate those traditions, what they believe is very real. Our kids celebrate advent (Catholic traditions) and it's personal to us...respectful curiosity is encouraged, but not derision or challenge of other people's beliefs.
Friday after next, scrooged, home alone 1&2.
“Oh my god of coarse” best go to line for get togethers ever!!
Agree. It's difficult to come up with the best Christmas movies unless you look back on the classics like my favorite- "It's a Wonderful Life", "White Christmas", or "A Christmas Carol" (any version, I love the story).
I always enjoy hearing your perspective about these things. Though I will say it is a bit awkward listening to it at my job which is in my church. Definitely something I choose to use headphones for lol
I use these to help sleep but always get interested and end up listening with my eyes closed
My top 5 favourite Christmas movies are A christmas story, national lampoon's christmas vacation, how the grinch stole christmas, elf, and I'll be home for Christmas or polar express
Merry Christmas!!! I love you guys
Is that Bowie, on Links shirt?
sure is!
them fightin words about Die-Hard y'all
If Rhett thinks that other people don't get together to sing he has clearly never heard of Balkans and kafana.
Or Kirtan
Hi there hello from the UK, love you're podcasts
Thank you for the spoiler alert on the secular man lmao
I'm starting to wonder if Rhett has recently read Velvet Elvis.
Love the videos keep up the good work
I was raised Catholic from the day I was born until I was 18, then I slowly went away and came back repeatedly.. I have so many questions but at the same time and the important thing to me is I do believe in a higher power and that had always remained a constant
Please do a video on your enneagram’s. Mine was eerily accurate after I heard you talk about it.
bumping this comment. I want an enneagram earbiscuit!
I relate so much to this and am so grateful that y'all are being so open about it. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Great Podcast. Thanks for sharing your journiyies and how you are spending the holidays away from your extended family.
I'm in the same boat, spending chrimbo alone, at least i have RUclips to keep me company xD
Just in time i wanted to hear something while I work
I was predominantly raised by my non religious dad and Die Hard IS a Christmas movie thank you very much 😂
“It broke a seal in me” it was nice to hear you say that. I’m very happy and excited for you!
Link dug out his deus hat again for talking about religious things.
