My dad bought two 60 series LCs in the early 80’s. Learned to drive on them...he still owns them to this day. One has 895,000 miles, one has 30,000 miles. Nothing but regular maintenance on the high mileage one, still driven daily, has never broken down...incredible vehicles.
Being a huge Land Cruiser fan, this has to be one of the best videos you have done. Can you guys stop buying the other off road crappy vehicles and finally pick up an FJ60 or the best one, the FJ80fzj for a long term off road rig.
sfakach t “off-road crappy vehicles”. The diversity of content is why I enjoy their channel. If you remove these “crappy” vehicles than how would average people know the limits on an average car. When they showed the capabilities of the Volkswagen i was very impressed and actually considered buying one. Something I would have never of thought.
Huey Sharapova 80 series are the best because they are unstoppable off road. 5 time winner of the Paris to Dakar rally. They are cheaper now because they are getting a bit older, but they are still probably the best 4 wheel drives of all time
The Iron pig brings back memories. Went honeymooning for a fortnight in one near on 40 yrs ago in Tropical Queensland. So durable ! It even outlasted the wife! ;-)
I remember an article in a magazine, some years back: Testing in the most harsh areas of the Ausie Outback...the usual suspects; Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, the Toyota LC, and something else, Jeep maybe ? By the end of the article, the Benz and Rover were falling apart, etc...same for the third vehicle...but, the Toyota L.C., was running strong like nothing ever happened. Truly, an incredible vehicle
Every version had a corresponding Diesel LC. Noticed you started with a later FJ40. I just traded away my 1967 (rust free desert) FJ40 with the 350 Chevy conversion, great vehicle, but a monster to turn without power steering. I moved up to a 2002 series 100 with only 130,000 miles. We both felt like we got a great deal on the even trade. Also, you didn't mention that all (or is it most) LCs have a white roof to pay homage to the original white fiberglass, riveted roof.
These aren't all of them that were sold in the US either, you could get the long wheelbase 45 series for a short time in the 60s and a higher HP version of the 60 series called the 62 in the 80s for example.
Had a 1996 80s series with factory lockers. That thing was an amazing refined beast. Engine was bullet proof & never burned a drop of oil. If a tire was on the ground, it was going through whatever was in its way. Had it for 10yrs, put almost 200k hard miles on it & never had any problems whatsoever. Sold it with 277k miles on it for almost what I paid. Best vehicle I've ever owned. Period!
I passed a pristine Iron Pig (orange and cream) on the freeway yesterday. It was spectacular! I have to be content with my 62 and 80. Long live the 3FE.

In Aus, all the cruisers besides the 200 and most petrol versions had a manual, and as far as I'm aware, the factory diesel/turbo diesel 80 series only came in manual.

I love my 100-series from 2006, it has the 4.2 L 1HD FTE straight six, amazing engine - especially coupled with that 5-speed auto. It’s also very modern, and every time I look at it, I’m grateful for owning it!
I live in Venezuela. We got the 80 series until 2007 because it was so good. I have a 2006 manual 4.5. 120k km. And it is the best car ever made. Love it.
I'd have to say the FJ40 is my favorite. There's a shop down here in South Florida that takes and restores these old Land Cruisers. They sure look cool
I've got to admit that my favorite is the old Iron Pig. In my younger days, I had a 76 FJ-40 which was fun, but my daily driver was my '69 FJ-55. It was a beast that made me feel like it could climb a tree, was a smoother ride than the 40 because of the wheel base, and had a lot of room in the back for hauling dogs (I had 3 greyhounds at the time). It even had an electric rear window! It's true that it wasn't a modern vehicle and lacked creature comforts, but it inspired confidence with it's brute force approach to design. On top of all that, the original Toyota F engine sat in the middle of a cavernous engine compartment that gave more than ample room to get in and work on it unlike later versions where the motor was a bit more wedged in. My only complaints were that it was a 3 speed and it had poorly designed 4 drum brakes- each drum had 2 cylinders and the lines had no portioning valves, making them a huge pain to adjust. Those things aside, I loved that truck.
He's way off with the price of a diesel 200 series in Oz. A basic GX drive away street price is about 75-80,000AUD well under 60,000USD. Top of the line Sahara about 130-140,000 AUD or under 100,000USD
I have the 200 series (new one) and I absolutely love it, the best SUV in the world no contest. Range Rover and everything else are unreliable over priced SUVs
Okay so I must have drove past this fleet of LCs the other week in Utah. I thought I was tripping out when I saw every generation drive past the other direction in just a quarter mile.
My two favorites are the 80 series with 4.5 engine and manual transmission and the 70 series again with the 4.5 engine and manual transmission. I used to have a 1981 40 series with the 2f engine and a 1998 4.5lt 70 series, the true king off road.
Drove an 80 series for 25 years and loved it. Just upgraded to 100 series and love it too. But especially love the power of the V8 over the straight six.
Love the video but just have to add you forgot the one model that actually was the crossover between the more utilitarian models and the more modern. It’s the fj62 not fj80. Had power windows, power antenna, power locks, rear heat, 4spd auto, and 1st with fuel injection. It was the crossover between the older to the more modern models.
I bought a FZJ GXL manual brand new in 1995 with the aim of using it for family AND off-road. Quarter of a century later, still got it, still go off-roading and love it.
I had an 80 series and have a 200 series now. The 80 series was the first LC that looked "cool", and it was a tank. Skipped the 100 series, but the 200 series gives you the comfort of an easy chair along with the power to go over or through anything. But I still miss the 1993 LC I had.
My dad bought a brand new 84 FJ60 back when I was a kid and my sis and I loved the Landcruiser! We definitely went everywhere on it! The FJ80 was awesome but my family got the Lexus LX450 version instead.
Great video, you got a taste of why most Land Cruiser owners end up owning several of them and are life long enthusiasts. There is no bad Land Cruiser model but the 55 series is my favorite.
What a fantastic video! I couldn't help but notice that when Tommy is featured in a video, the quality is immeasurably better than the majority of others published on TFL.

I really want to get a 200 series for overlanding and general offroading, but it’s just too wide and heavy. I wish Toyota would strip some weight, make it a little narrow while keeping the V8 and I would be in love.
We had a 1978 fj55. In 1993 my wife and I drove our two kids (aged 2, and 7 months, respectively) from Olympia WA to Punta Gorda Belize, where we lived for a year and a half. It was an amazing truck. We absolutely loved it. Of course, it was so loud that you couldn't hear the kids crying in the backseat, which was an added bonus. Wish we could have kept it, but it was too impractical when we came back home to The States.
Toyota should start reading all the comments and come out with the different variations here is the US so the mass can can justify the price point and have a chance to own one at a more reasonable price to fit their needs and wants.
I had a 40 and a 55, loved the 55 but here in the UK you were always chasing rot on the body, chassis solid as a rock, I did two engine rebuilds chasing oil leaks and trying to get more power but I loved it and would have another one if I could find a rust free one, more chance of getting a Unicorn.
I had an 87 LC with a straight 6 cylinder, auto trans, locking differential, rust bucket that got me EVERYWHERE & BACK. Rolled it, got it back upright, crushed roof, started it back up and drove it home. Like driving my living room into the country, have a 2009 now, even then I long for that old rust bucket. Truly the most fun and reliable vehicle 🚗 I've ever owned.
Excellent video.. I think 80 series is the best stock offroad vehicle Toyota has produced. Not sure what happened to Toyota, but wish they used the 80 series platform for the FJ cruiser.
i have owned two fj 40s a 1975 and 1981 a1981 fj60 i now have a fj cruiser 2008 with 62000.mis and 2012 4 runner with 50000. mi. i have loved each a every one the fj40s the best off road .
I vote 100 series (LX470 specifically) - very reliable (more than previous series), very roomy and still very capable without being too expensive to have fun with!
I liked the 2004 100 series. It was the best looking. It would be cool if Toyota made the next generation Land Cruiser as a retro version going back to the Iron Pig
Nice video! The 3FE was plenty fine in the FJ62, it just was a dog in the early 80 series because of the full time 4wd. I just rebuilt the head on my FJ62 (P.O. cracked it after it overheated) which has 220k miles on it and the compression is still factory spec. Drives great! That's now my main rig. Even more so than my 40.
my 1997 Toyota land cruiser was a good workhorse , but I loved my 2000 range rover p38 , it had a magical ride over rough terrain compared to my land cruiser😏
Check out Barry Crump from New Zealand Toyota Hilux ad from the 80,s. He drives this hilux up this rough as hill, then says to his mate “ There’s only one other way to get up here” and they both look over an old fj40 parked under the trees. Gold.
I had already crowned the HJ60 before I even saw his final choice! Now I'm definitely satisfied with my recent purchase of this model! HJ60 rules down through different eras!
I'm finally getting serious about fixing up my 1991 Fj80 series. It's been sitting idle for almost 2 years now. In the mechanics shop presently getting a fuel pump (genuine Toyota parts). Just ordered a set of tires on EBay for it. Clear coat is in rough shape. Only 160k miles on it. Spent $1,400 on new front axle bearings/seals a couple years ago.... may as well get it back to usable condition. But at 10 mpg...I won't be taking any long trips to west TX in it. Great Video...!!!
Still driving an xj70 3.5l 5 cyl DSL Shorty and still loving it. Rides on m/t Goodyear 17" made it more comfy. Working on the paint job next. Hello from Qld Australia.
Nice. I found a 2003 LX470, 230k, $6500. (In 2023) Not perfect, but still a bargain. AHC still works great. Cheapest 100 series in decent shape I could find by several thousand.
Minority? Maybe here in the comments section. Really, no other land cruiser arouses more enthusiasm around the world currently. Search the net, something special is happening about these 60 series beasts (60, 61, 62) .
Slight correction. The FJ 55 (wagon) was first introduced in the US in 1967. I know, because my parents bought a brand new one in 1970! It looked almost identical to the 77 you drove but the dash, lights and tranny were different. They only came with a 3 speed column shift (3 on the tree). I learned how to drive in the Mojave desert in that car and drove it all the way through high school! I bought a brand new 100 series in ‘2000 which I still have and love but I’d give anything to have that old green and white ‘70 FJ55 back!
We had a 1983 FJ 60 and adored it to pieces! Practically drove it into the ground. We had it from around 1987 until 2001. My mom’s gorgeous black 1997 FJ80 we bought in 2001 and the thing is still going stronger than a tank! It beat both of our Mercury Sable‘ and is probably going to beat my dad‘s 2004 Camry as well!
I daily my 82 fj40. Most of the rattles can be eliminated by modifying hinges with nylon washers and aluminum bushings and grease. If you're never in a hurry, it's a great vehicle.
I tried to like this video twice, great job!
I clicked the like button 4 times.
@Jose Martinez they probably dislike their car

Omg the 79 land cruiser four door pick up is my all time fav land cruise is sad we can’t get them here

We have those here in Honduras. They are very rigid and uncomfortable, very expensive. Altbough it will last a lifetime almost.

I have 80series manual with 4.2 diesel engine. I have owned around 140 vehicles and this is the one that I’ll never sell . Best vehicle ever made.

@CNend the price and reliability. The extra fuel it uses is compensated by the power it makes and how much it cost in the end

Wish we could have kept it, but it was too impractical when we came back home to The States.
Toyota should start reading all the comments and come out with the different variations here is the US so the mass can can justify the price point and have a chance to own one at a more reasonable price to fit their needs and wants.
Love the Ace Ventura reference, awesome video, congrats Tommy.
Well made video! The best by far. The legend and history of the Land Cruiser is the true culmination of an offroad beast.
Plz make a comparative test between the FJ40 and a Defender 90 of the same area. When you described the car, it was lime me describing my Land Rover.
Great video 👍, I currently own a 2015 land cruiser and it has been great and has 81k miles and no problems
Shopping through LCs, FJCs, LX470s, GX470s and certain 4Runners...glad I came across this vid. Helps my search with more info.
Excellent video.. I think 80 series is the best stock offroad vehicle Toyota has produced. Not sure what happened to Toyota, but wish they used the 80 series platform for the FJ cruiser.
Would love to get an 80 series, but i would miss driving manual too much
i have owned two fj 40s a 1975 and 1981 a1981 fj60 i now have a fj cruiser 2008 with 62000.mis and 2012 4 runner with 50000. mi. i have loved each a every one the fj40s the best off road .
I've watched like a dozen LC review videos in the past month and I've noticed one thing: Why is it always Texas plates?
Great Job Tommy!!! I love the newest ones!
Fj 60 is my childhood, I learned how to drive in a 85 model, now 10 years later I own my own fj62 and I'm still in love with jf
Love my 100 Series! Best vehicle I've ever owned! It's not bad at wheeling either
Why did you sell it?
@@yeahman1975 I still have it! Never getting rid of it! Almost 300k and runs great
@@ricky_skids it will be great for SHTF or Armageddon
Agreed. Yesterday a friend asked what kind of mpg I get and I said without hesitation, I didn’t buy it for the mpgs. Great truck!
@@ladweeb1798my LX470 gets 14 overall. Between the weight and the height and the 4 speed auto, I drive it like a grandma for the most part, no hurry.
The FJ 80 series or Prado is the best Land Cruiser variant!
my 1997 Toyota land cruiser was a good workhorse , but I loved my 2000 range rover p38 , it had a magical ride over rough terrain compared to my land cruiser😏
Awesome video! The best video I have seen about the beloved Toyota Land Cruiser. So cool to drive them back to back.
Fj80 followed by FJ80 are my favorite ones.
Great soundtrack, it’s elevating to the beautiful videography!
Just picked up a 1998 LX470. 220,000 miles for only $7,000. great condition!
Nice. I found a 2003 LX470, 230k, $6500. (In 2023) Not perfect, but still a bargain. AHC still works great. Cheapest 100 series in decent shape I could find by several thousand.
I'll take an 80 series with the 1HD-FTE diesel please!
I might be in the minority, but I like the 60 series more than any other.
80-100 series for me
Excellent choice!
🏜️...🥃
Excellent intro, gave me a good chuckle when you were revealed to be driving in an upscale neighborhood. LOL
Check out the 105 series, designed for Australia. 100 series with live axles full time awd with diff locks
