My 80 was bought new in 1993 by my grandfather. It was handed down to my father in 2000 with 40,000 miles. All 3 of us sons grew up on that truck. We all learned to drive that truck for licenses. And then it was handed down to me in 2017 with 230,000 miles, to raise my family in. It now has 260,000 miles. Can't wait for all the memories.
Nick Apodaca I'll never get rid of my 1987 FJ60. It is the best vehicle I've ever owned. Period. Full stop.
That's amazing! 👍
Hi Nick. Surfing the web and saw your comment! Glad to see you invest in and fix up the Land Cruiser. Hopefully it will last long enough for you to hand down to your children that you and Jess will someday have. Love, Dad.
test driving a 93 LC this week. It has 330K and they're asking $4400. Interior is beat up and paint faded but still looks awesome. Any thoughts/advice?
And with a little TLC you may very well end up passing it down to your Sons or Daughters......as well 😎
It’s just such a beautiful machine...
You still have your 80? Saw the ig post but havent seen a video on it
Thank you!
@@iamsam369 naah, he sold it. Can't drive it like it's supposed to.
Last Line Of Defense go away nobody likes you.
I have an 87, HJ60 5 spd TLC with 274,500 kilometers, my first & only vehicle, my older bro bought it new, and I've had it for the last 27 yrs and it's my daily driver.🙃
I have 3 80s and totally agree with your comments. I also love fz-fe motor. I have a side hobby now and that’s visiting every gas station I see😁😁😁
MadMatt 4WD watch you channels mate fellow Ozzy I have the same hobie in mine👍🏻
I found it best just to use my diesel truck to tow my 80 to its destination. I think if you are going to off-road with this, even though they’re super reliable, make sure to have a friend or even better yourself with a truck and trailer
The emotional section is 100% an 80 series thing, I feel it too
Well done, sir. My two brothers and I came home from the hospital in the family's '69 FJ55. We all learned to drive in that truck, took many cross-country family trips and to this day, are still heavily involved in the Cruiser community. Aside from the reliability and capability traits, as you cited, there is something about them that gets in your soul. They truly become family through the shared creation of memories. My DD is a triple-locked, '97 80 on 35"KM3s and it still makes me smile every time I get behind the wheel. It's the love of these vehicles and people who support them that lead us to create Solid-Axle Summit in 2017 and the growth and outpouring of support has been incredible. It's been one of the most rewarding endeavors we have ever undertaken - a true labor of love. You should come.
We get it my friend, its a love affair with your truck, and let me tell you ,if you ever sell it, you will always wish you didn't- all the best from new Zealand.
hey NZ
Hey mate, a first time owner of toyota land cruiser 100 series here in nz. The country i was born, its only a dream to buy this BEAST(100 series) . I bought this a couple months ago but i got attached into it and now saving hard earned money just to install NEW bullbar and REAR bar on it. DRiving this BEAST(100 series) here in NZ feels like your family is super safe..
The best car I ever owned was my 94 Landcruiser. I now have a 2010 LX 570, which I am keeping because it is the second-best car I have owned.
Awesome. The more I watch you, the more I want to offload my newish overland vehicle and get myself a 105 and build exactly what I want that I can fix myself as Ive always done in the past 👍
Thanks for watching everyone! Yup! It’s a 4.5 liter, not 4.7. Just a slip! See you on the trail!
Hey, why do you prefer a petrol one instead of diesel?
Dictose diesel ones were never sold in the USA
@@dawsonginn7482 oh, is that so?
But, there's always a way to import a car or spare parts.. Guess, it's more complicated, then.
@@Dictose yeah that's is to protect USA industries because us citizen would not use anymore useless diesel no one haul everyday 15k lbs
myneymo77 it’s not about hauling things, but KPI, imho.
I have an old lifted 93' FJ80 and I think I love this truck more now than I did ten years ago! It's the most reliable vehicle I've ever driven by a long shot!
I feel like I'm saving money with every passing day!
@@OverlandBound It definitely makes up for the mpg we get with 35s and bumpers!
Second owner of a 92 4runner v6 manual; had it since 96 and i totally relate, esp to REASON #3!... a lot of history n memories. Thank you Overland Bound!
I've been concerned with all the electronic gadgets and trying to fix my own vehicles anymore. You made a very valid point on that.
A Moots KL Adventure agree the electronic brake booster can n my 08 4 runner went out tried to change it myself and had to be programmed so had to take it to the stealership lol
You are SO awesome. Your joy from Overlanding is infectious. Truly inspiring, and I support wholeheartedly your FZJ80 love. Not that you need it. ;
You made the right decision, don’t sell it. That’s the best land cruiser ever made
The true testament to this is all the minds he has changed through this video in particular. Everyone wants new but it's not necessary. 👍
I bought my daughter a 98 wrangler and she wore it out on the beaches of North Carolina. After she bought a 2010 wrangler I got the 98 back. I will not get rid of it. I still drive it. I understand the emotional attachment. Long live old 4x4s.
Here here!
I feel the same way about my FJ. Put so much elbow grease into it. She feels like family now. --- UPDATE: I said family before I watched the video. Funny how we all feel the same way about and get attached to our vehicles.
don't ever get rid of that FJ. You'll regret it, just keep fixing it until the frame is gone haha.
I get all of that 100%. My 80 is off getting a full engine rebuild right now. Also ERPSystem installed (because the 80 has no rust and I want it to stay that way) the electrics upgraded. After that the paint needs a new clear coat and the sound system upgraded and then we start kitting it out for our quarter lap of Australia.
I’ll never get rid of the our 80 either, it’s part of the family, even our friends have become emotionally attached to it 😂
Beautiful! I can’t agree with you more. 80s are wonderful, capable vehicles to enjoy and also worth preserving.
Another thing that is great when u overland with an older 4x4 is if you break your car beyond salvaging. you can get another 1 and swap out all the parts you purchased upgrading it and of you go again
My 1999 died last year with over 270k. I still mourn that loss. Loved that thing!!
🙌 Same here! Will never get rid of my 02 TLC, I've owned 14 yrs and put 300k+ with of miles of smiles on!
Well stated! I wont part with my 1988 Fj62 for those same reasons. My 94 year old mother loved climbing up into my truck and going for a ride. Even with her struggles with Alzheimers, she giggled like a little kid knowing we were going on an adventure. She’s gone now, but I keep Betty Mae for the memories it she has given me.

great Video those are the same reasons we won't get rid of are cj7 jeep It's a 40 year old member of the family👍
Tell you what bud, back in 2007 I worked in the desert in the middle east. Very dusty, no vegetation. Wind blowing at +/- 10 Mph. Got picked up by a colleague who weighed at least 300 lbs, plus two other 300 lbs behemoth (fat, obese) and myself at 155 lbs. The vehicle was a diesel landcruiser (262 hp, 480 lb-ft torque). At the back we carried a counterweight of a Lufkin pump (pump jack) which must weigh at least 150 lbs. The driver put his foot down at about 30 mph and that cruiser pulled like a freight train down low. Imagine 1200 lbs of load plus some hand luggage, AC full blast and that particular cruiser had been in the desert for 2 years with +/- 70,000 miles. In the meantime my personal 2000 cherokee (4.0 lt, automatic) was gutless and the AC died after just +/- 27.000 miles. Fiat Chrysler products are crap and for m money landcruiser / 4 runner / tacoma / tundra or even Nissan terra is the 4WD of choice.
Thank you for this great video. I just got a 2000 Jeep XJ. This is my 3rd Jeep and this Jeep feels right and like family.
I just sold my sports car to pick up a turbo diesel 80 been looking at them for ages it feels like and am very excited to finally get one, I was having some doubts about my decision since I've been mainly a sports car person most of my life but also wanted something that I can make new exciting memories in and finally be able to get back into the out doors and backcountry again since I haven't been able to get there with the sports cars I owned ( could barely get down dirt and gravel roads without scrapping and ripping the bumpers off) this video really helped clear up some of those doubts I had about purchasing my 80 and im now even more excited to get her here.
The upcoming Bronco, with factory 35”’s, removable doors/roof, soft and hard, 10 speed and very potent turbo v6, full time 4x4 , factory rear tire carrier, and the list goes on
how did those play out...lol
My 02 Xterra will never leave the family. Yes it's IFS, but I don't get too crazy, and I get 16 mpg with 32" bfg KO2s. 33" milestars are next (285/75/16)
Very respectable.
I spoke too soon :( totaled at a stoplight Dec 19th.
Felt that way about my ‘76 FJ40 and then my ‘96 T100. Memories mean a lot.
1990’s Toyotas were one of the best build cars ever.
especially the turbo diesel landcruisers
Not just 90's.
Still running 1990 SR5 Toyota Truck
They still have one car that is build to 90s quality standards
It's called the land cruiser 70 series
I agree. Solidly built. Raw.
It is also something that if maintained well, which it appears to be from your vids, can be passed down to your kids, like a family heirloom. I would see that the memories made with your son are priceless, and some day he will take the wheel and appreciate those same memories.
I felt the same about about my '07 FJ Cruiser. After buying a '96 LC, I now want to sell my FJC. The FZJ80 is everything.
Legendary vehicle without a doubt.
Mate you did the right thing
What I notice about Toyota's 2007 below are really getting Nicer and Manlier especially the Trucks and SUV's. They're really amazing with off road build too even just the tires. Love your 4runner!
You expressed exactly how I feel about my 1994 FZJ80 Manual. I eventually sold my normal car because I never used it, always choosing the 80 when I leave in the morning. When my mom passed last year I sold the car I got her and had the head redone with the money. So the 80 kind of swallowed a Kia :) This makes no sense since I could have had a Lexus V8 conversion done for half the price. I did it because I didn’t want it to lose anything about the way it makes me feel. I’ll also never sell mine. Love your videos.
Picked up my '14 Tacoma today, bought my OB membership on sunday! VERY excited to get out there and start overlanding!
Welcome to the crew my friend! Glad to have you!
Anyone asking the question of why, and is serious. Well they don’t have the same connection to vehicles as a lot of us.
Excellent video i had have 7 fj 80 the best 4x4 on earth rmyblast one a 1997 40 anniversary ,keep going with your videos 👊🏻👍🏼
Especially agree about the engine...love that inline 6! Miss my FJ40 so much.
Getting my first 80 tomorrow. It’s emotional!
I driven from 1980 82, 83,1990,till 2002 model the best 1990 on ward all the best turfistes model with all leaf springs
Best 4x4 i ever had was a 55 series wagon 1967. Wish I still had it
Dude...you said it. You just love your cruiser! I have had Landrovers, toyotas, four traks,subarus,everything.... they are all good! Rangerovers are sexy af but soft as poo. Whatever floats yer boat! All the best from Scotland- and we know how to test our trucks to the max!🤣🤣
Number one reason, it’s a Toyota 💪🏻
Toyota is an overpriced Shitbox Nissan Patrol value for money Tough as Nails
@@blueskystailwind544 Agree with the old stuff. The new Toyotas not so much!
This is one of many reasons why I support you and why I became a proud member of Overland bound! Keep it coming! See you on the trail! #RoverXventures 20133
I smile everytime I walk up to My Tacoma..We just know the satisfaction.
The feels.... I do the same thing with my 4runner
Just bought a 2020 Tacoma TRD PRO. I’m 48 and it’s the last truck I will ever need to buy. People ask why I love Toyota? I reply would you trust your Ford or GMC to drive from Florida to Alaska and back to Florida without a problem 😀
Just got my 04 4Runner last summer, bought it wrecked with 150k on the odometer. I rebuilt it, replacing passenger doors and a few pieces and it was in such great shape it was worth every penny. Garage kept, very minor rust and mechanically sound. I smile very time I look at it knowing what fun I'll have taking it off road this summer. Nothing like a Toyota!
I have a 94 Cherokee that I will never get rid of either, I already have a new SUV and I drive it less then my Cherokee especially in winter, it’ll be my full time project (:
I feel the same about 2007 FJ Cruiser, forever vehicle!
They sell 40,000 Landcruisers in Australia compared to the 4000 in the US. Differences from the US version is the 4.5 Litre TWIN TURBO DIESELis sold here
Sir you just made so much sense in this video. Respect and best wishes on tour travels!
Owner of 97 FZ transformed into FT manual, can not be any happier with 4.2 24 valve turbo diesel. Mileage is 10-12 letters per 100kms.
Great story. Wonderful video. Happy trails!
I'll never get rid of my 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser because....
Because I don't even have one😂. But I wish I did!
I'm with u bro. When I was a teenager back in Philippines I've seen cruiser all over the place and told my self I will own one when I get a good job. Then moved to US legally lol and bought my first 80 series in 09 and still have it and love it. Also have 100 series for daily and can't wait to get my hands on 40 series.
Not making a $1000+/month payment buys a lot of fuel, repairs and upgrades.
These Landcruiser's are so boss. Wish I could afford one
I have a 97' Grand Cherokee that I'm planning on building. But, more and more, I am really wanting an FJ80, especially the triple locked model. I think it would be so much building of the Grand Cherokee to get to where the FJ80 already is. Thanks for your video, I enjoyed it.
Great vehicle. Smart bloke. Good on you
Land Rovers get way better mileage than most other vehicles (assuming you don't consider the fuel that goes into the tow truck that it's sitting on).
If you are worried about fuel consumption, Land Cruisers are not for you. Simple.
Just picked up my first FZJ80. Always been a Jeep guy and have an LJ I overland with. Will be building on the 80 and amazed at the following they have. May bring it to the Overland East show next year. I had met you this year at the show. Did you drive your 80 to that show?
Well I felt that way about my excursion and am currently selling her and Ive been looking at the 80 series and this video kinda gave me the edge I was looking for to look deeper into getting a cruiser. Im use to bad mpg, but a trade off would be the 4x4 all the time and other perks
I really want to buy A Toyota Land Crusier, First Generation Toyota Sequoia or a 4runner for some reason. They are interesting cars. I know they are huge and gas guzzlers, but i love the 2000-2007 Toyota Sequoias(i dont care if they are soccer mom grocery getters, i can turn it into an offroader)
Stumbled across your video and channel today and just wanted to say. Great job! I’ll be watched more and more. Keep up the great work.
I owned an hzj or hdj 80, 4.2 liters engine with turbo, it's the best car I've owned. The only problem it is hard to find spare parts
Cost is a factor and if it works well for your type of application, why get rid of it ? My commander has a 2.5 inch lift and gets me there safe and turns a few heads. It will be passed down to my son to enjoy. Great video and greetings from Canada.
In the tide of Ronny Dahl and Jason @swellrunner changing vehicles I'm glad you are staying with yours! Nothing wrong with changing but my fav is the 80! Love your channel!
Thank you so much! We will continue to improve the 80 as we go. Thank you for watching. Much appreciated.
I had a lot 4by4 but I'm now on the way to a LC 80 or a G-class. Just watching videos like yours to help me to make a decision but let me tell you two years after you post your video😅 It is a "Geländewagen" and not a "SUV"😅😂
My 80 series turned 25 years old last month. I love it. It’s not going anywhere without me.
The 80 series is the best cruiser made. In Australia we prefer the HZJ diesel version better economy at 22mpg. I have a 100 series Standard made only for Australia known as HZJ105. This version is mostly 80 series with a 1070 series body but with barn doors at rear instead of the tailgate. My first Land Cruiser a 1980 HJ45 Troop Carrier - still going strong. Cheers - PS. New is not better.
Love my 1990 80vx in 5spd 4.2turbo 12v loves 15psi
Nice video mate it’s nice to hear of your beautiful memories I wish I was lucky to have had your memories 👍👍👍
Great answer at the end. It’s part of the family and all the memories. Just beautiful. Thanks for sharing 🤙🏻👍🏻
Great trucks bud why change it. Totally agree why you keep it. Uust like my old landrover👍
My 4runner had been in my family for 300k miles and I plan to keep it for another 300k.
When my girlfriend became the most important thing in my life... I gave here my Land Cruiser. When two things you love come together the blessings you’ll find will be endless
Original owner of a 92 FJ80. It is a part of the family. Still doing long trips and making memories each year.
TM I’ve had my 92 for 5 years now, and Lord willing, my kids will one day drive it when they’re all grown.
I got a '91 FJ80 last year, currently at 168k miles and going strong. A lot of people dis the early FJ80s due to low power to weight ratio, but I don't mind it. I love this truck!
I would love an 80 series. Would rather a 60 series but trying to find either of those where I live in canada is damn near impossible unless you're willing to pay about $20,000 for something almost stock.
Loved the video and just bought an 80 myself. It is a 4.5 liter motor though, not a 4.7.
Subscribed! I've owned 6 or so 80's Toyota Pickups and would love to own an FZJ80 to haul my family.
Pass anything on the road bar a gas station
A part of the family. And it works. That’s it.
I agree with you with the only difference that I prefer the HDJ80 (4.2 1HD Turbo diesel engine). They are powerful and super economical, with all the benefits you mentioned. I have 2, a 1997 and a special 1998 edition with 2 fuel tanks and Full-Time 4WD. Can't beat these vehicles.
It's cuz they just don't make 'em like how they use to
Absolutely feel the same way about my rig! We’ve put so many hours into modifying it and made lots of great memories in the process. ❤️🐞
#4 - Its on the badge!!!
The 4. reason... Nothing stops a Landcruiser, Not even Bullets
Good on ya mate in Australia we love them very much I have had many cars but my Nissan patrol is the favourite car and your hundred percent right The cars are a part of the family in 2019 I did go through a hard patch and my patrol put a massive smile on my face it's a 2004 model and this is the first car to me that want to keep as long as I can in Australia we love Toyota and Nissan four wheel drives good luck for driving mate if you're ever on holiday in Australia you will love it cheers
Bash ka 👍👍👍👍👍
97 4runner for 17 years. Would love an 80 but cant part with the runner. Can buy a lot of overlanding fuel for the cost of a replacement.
Awesome video, I feel the same about what gets me out to explore.
Proud owner of a turbo diesel 80 series, 5 speed with factory front and rear diff locks.
It’s an epic machine.
I just bought one 2 days ago.. 1996
I bet it is. Unfortunately, Toyota never sold them in North America.
Oh man, as if you are talking on behalf of me even though I have 1998 LC100. I could not agree more with everything you said especially when it comes to capability. And like you said the car became part of the family and NOT thinking to sell it even though I bought a new 2017 LC200
So I recently blew the head m gasket on my 97 FZJ80, but luckily didn’t experience the extra damage you endured. Knowing that we have faced similar decisions recently helps me feel safe I say I’m justified in my reasoning to pay for the fixes to put her back in the road. The memories shared and the many to come will keep our rig around for a lot longer than I’m ever admit!
0:12 Steve Stiffler popped up on my screen
The best vehicle ever made!
at 3:45 you said it was a 4.7L engine.. its actually a 4.5L. Probably just one of those video talking typos but I just wanted to let ya know!
If you are worried about fuel efficiency, then a Land Cruiser is not the vehicle for you - no matter what variety you go for.....
Seriously, just need to add another fuel tank for extended range 😂
i know what your sayingwith old 4wd's , you know a car inside out ,what it will take and wont but after owning a diesel 4wd i will only ever drive a diesel 4wd now , i owned a 60 series 4.2 petrol non turbo prior and it was slow ,under powered BUT it was ROCK SOLID and reliable and went anywhere . its capabilities were only limited by me . keep them original and they stay predictable
Best reasons for owning a truck forever
