One of the main points I think this video is making is that you don't have to commit to a "Main" right out of the gate because of how the horizontal progression system works.

While you kind of touched on it indirectly, I think the biggest thing I'd tell anyone making their first character is that the core aesthetic/role for the classes is just not really used very commonly. I'd stress much more heavily the Elite Specializations each class has and what type of gameplay and role THOSE have, as I feel that's a much better representation of what the endpoint for each of the classes looks like.

My recommendation is, don't fear to make alts. Once you get to 80/endgame the game will give you a bunch of ways to get lvl up tomes/gear. My revenant was just a few hours old when I already started raiding with it.

I love Ranger as a main. Was very fun and first pet game that I had and I loved this idea. I also loved ele but would get downed very easily. Over 10 years I have one of every class. And through 10 years peoples opinions and "meta" got me confused if what I liked was "good" now I no longer care what others say. I have every spec in the game. But only play ranger and ele! Now learned to trust my gut. Tyyy❤

The first toon I made was an asuran engineer, and a member of the college of synergetics. Through understanding base physics and simple alchemy I hope to extrapolate and understand the eternal alchemy. I regret nothing, despite learning engineer in core (ye ol grand pianist).

Use to play Guild Wars 1 as a (Fire) Elementalist. I remember you could grab skills from bosses and had skills to heal myself as I casted out spells. Then Guild Wars 2 comes out my first instinct was to choose what I was already comfortable with and go Ele. But it wasn't what I had in mind. Then HoT came out and I was switching elements, healing others while also giving boons it was fun. But then I tried Guardian when PoF came out and I love it. Love the firebrand.

Couple days ago I found out that the game was released on steam aswell. And here I am now following your guidance step by step about the game trying my best not to get spoilers even with environment. Thank you very much for the content. I hope I will learn much.

I have 6 alternating toons that ive made over the course of 10 casual years. I will agree going into it first, your expectations are way off once you enter combat with certain weapons. For example, I would never play a mage type class, but on a whim tried Ele and then equipped two daggers... no class is more exciting to me. But they're all fun.

I can relate to that with my character creation. I picked Warrior because I played warrior in wow and only warrior since vanilla. After reaching 80 in GW on a warrior, it just didnt click and I ended up loving another class that fit my style more.

  • @swinglow6580

    EXTREMELY good points in this.
Even if a class isn't "easy" doesn't mean you shouldn't play it! If you're new to GW2 you will learn how to play that class regardless when leveling. You'll learn to master all of its abilities by playing the game content over time, now if you're running straight into pvp ok you might have a different argument on your hands but besides that. Play whatever class looks fun...I spent WAY too long making characters cause I was looking up "best classes to play" guides but I finally told myself "just freaking the play game" and I did. Made a warrior (mind you I do not really enjoy that class type) but I'm having an absolute blast! On my way to a bladesworn, gun sword? Oh ya. Just find class that you think will be cool, and play it. Worse case? You don't like it, make another.

Having played the original Guild Wars (still do every now and then), I had the expectation of not treating any class like it was in a defined role... every class is DPS with extra features. So naturally my first character had to be an elementalist because I loved the class description. Now as I'm learning how to play it, I'm finding it very similar to the bard in Everquest in how you have to utilize everything, know how to time skills/abilities, and get used to taking those keyboard skills to the max.

My first class was thief. At first I played without any expansions for few months, then picked up pof and hot, then made my thief into Daredevil. To this day 1.5 years later I still about 90% of the time play as Daredevil (cond dps), recently created Renegade (alac power dps).

All your points are very valid and good points. I started GW2 as a Charr Warrior, swapped to human Messmer and then got convinced in to making a ele for raids in World v World. Our guild had none but we where swimming in Messmers and i played healer/support in other games and they asked so nicely so i said yes and made a Asura Ele.. My ele have the most played hours now 10 years later.
Sometimes i get bored but then i have all my alts and jump on my mech, staff daredevil, ranger or necro or dragonhunter. Mood of the day and what i aim to do usually decide what to pick =)
GW2 have made sure that i don't have to stress about it. I can pick and play what ever i feel like and i can make new characters supereasy and since they share my bank, wallet, masteries, mounts sometimes even gear it just is very easy to play what you like, just as you said.
Your main might not show up until years later when you suddenly realise you played 12 k hours on it =D

Ahh I remember these days. I picked a Sylvari Ranger to start off with. I did PvP for half a year, moved on to master low level dungeons, then got sucked into Fractals of the Mists. I dabbled with some WvW, popped in and out to get some special currency and cool skins, but oh boy, was I not prepared for WvW. The next time I got in, I treated it like a standard bit of WvW tomfoolery, I roamed around for a while, taking camps, killing lone players, and eventually I'd go for max loot by joining a Commander's squad and tagging along.
    I was kicked.
    Instantly.
When I enquired, it appeared that there was somewhat of a Ranger boycott going on. No one in WvW accepted Rangers into their squads because they offered, and I quote: "Nothing." Their tools weren't undervalued, they were simply useless. A lot of what it could do, other classes could do better whilst excelling at 5 different things at once. The power creep really started setting in and, unfortunately, Ranger was left behind. The community's response to it was... strange... actively choosing to punish other players and insult them consistently in map chat, whisper chat, to the point where one of my roaming duels told me to "fuck off" because I was a Druid. To be clear, you cannot simply message an enemy player in WvW, they had to go through some convoluted as-yet-unknown to me tactic in order to message me privately. I literally couldn't do WvW as a Ranger, unless I was content to simply be a lone wolf.
Mind, that has since been "fixed". But I can't say I'll ever forget it. Who knows what class will get ass-rammed out of an entire gamemode next.

    Excellent approach indeed :)
My only spanner in the works is that I, being a decent swordsman in the real world, like to play melee classes ... buuut ... being old and my hands getting stiffened up with arthritis and my visual acuity fading, I have found that, as the game pressed on into EoD, I simply cannot keep up and spend half my time swinging at air, as a mob I cannot see amidst all the visual flashy effects has moved away. Everything moves too fast for me now so I am coming to accept that I need to play ranged classes with fast attacks or I am just not going to cut it.
That's frustrating as in the real world my skill and experience mean that I don't often struggle even against quick-twitch young bucks who think they can take the 'old man' ... I taught them everything they know ... but I didn't teach them everything *I* know! :chuckles: But the laws of keyboard warrior-dom are more unforgiving :sadness:

Don't get me wrong, I still love my Dragonhunter, it's my comfort pick, but exploring and learning other classes is really fun. There is no gear treadmill in gw2, you don't have to rush, just pick a class that looks fun and enjoy the ride :)

    So far i have played:
    Engineer, Holo, Scrapper, Mech
    Ranger, Soulbeast
    Warrior, Berserker
    Thief, Daredevil, Specter
    Guardian, Firebrand
    Necromancer, Scourge, Reaper
and yesterday i created a Mesmer...
so far i have not found a profession/elite i fell in love with. Never ever had such a hard time finding a "class" for me in any MMO i played before.
And contrary to your video i think it is really hard and very time consuming to try out all those professions/specs, leveling up and gearing takes A LOT of time if you arent a full geared up and full on mounts and achievements, yet.
Yes a verteran that has achieved everything in the game probably doesnt take a whole lot of effort to bringt a new character up en par, but as a new player?! WAY to timely! And in the end if it wasnt the right profession for you which can take months to find out it gets VERY frustrating after a couple of tries.
From your video I was hoping to get some new insight on what class to play but sadly i am still stuck at the same question with no answer...

Mymistakes were quite different haha but my class picks were similar. I play mage, paladin and hunter in wow so I tried elementalist first, didn't vibe with it, then guardian which I found a bit too slow with too many ground target aoes so I tried ranger and barely played it. Completely different than what I was expecting for some. I got stuck on petty things like race and class combos with who gets what name. Since I learned that birthday rewards would be a big thing and you never want to delete them and you can't change your race, I was often overthinking it as well as "who gets my usual names and who doesn't? What race should they be since I can't ever delete them?"

Gw2 was my first real MMO, I played runescape for years and nothing else. My first character was a sylvari ranger that I deleted cause I ended up not liking the race or the class and thought I had to delete my character to make a new one for some reason. Made a thief and played only thief for like 2 years before I branched out and started trying every class. Now I have one of each class with 2-4 builds 😅 my "main" is mesmer and has been for the last 7 years but I spend a ton of time on my ranger too and havent really touched thief since I stopped playing her. Shes turned into my crafting character that sometimes leaves the mistlock sanctuary to do a provisioner token run.
Gw2 is so forgiving with picking a class and playing multiple with all these builds has kept me playing for years

You know I do have this weird tangent about classes. I really like the Ranger class, but as a Ranger specifically. The base class feels like you are playing Aragorn more than you are a traditional ranger, bow access, greatsword, axes, swords, it is really fun. Not to mention being a leather clad fighter is very close to a D&D Fighter. But it is the classes after that sort of ruin it for me. They are all sort of locked into a druid adjacent class in my perspective (aside from just the druid, the other two are pretty much just druids with different weapons). In the end I made my main a Necromancer because that is just my vibe.
Oh luckily, with weapon master it really just expanded what the base classes can do without having to spec into an additional class, and I think that is neat. So it solves my problem with the Ranger, I can stay the base class but still use hammers and daggers and stuff.

I played guardian to 80, then decided I want to try ele. Boosted ele and having a lot of fun going through heart of thorns as a catalyst. But every time i see one of the guides or a streamer playing warrior, thief or mesmser, I start to doubt my choice and fight the urge to make another character. I might never finish the game if it continues. :D

My first class in GW2 was ranger, on one hand because as a real life archer, i pick archers in every game, but also because i come from GW1 and my main was ranger there. To my (dissapointing) surprise, GW2 rangers in some aspects are not even the shadow of what they are in GW1, specially if you fine tuned your ranger build there, finding that only 2 of the 5 longbow skills are matching what you used in gw1 was terrible (pretty fun to weild a bada$$ hammer as a ranger though). After that rather sad experience, tried the thief, quite fun class to play, super dynamic and fast paced, then the engineer/mechanist i love that class, specially roasting enemies with my flamethrower while to robot keeps the aggro. Tried just about everyclass and the one that's catching my attention now is the revenant, i think it is a very unique and interesting class to play (as a side note, the worst dissapointment, from a former gw1 player point of view is the necromancer, really hated it, maybe because my 2nd main in gw1 was a necro minion master) The Mesmer in GW2 is quite "meh" for me playing a mesmer was all about being the master of interrupts, the worst headache for everyone, either in PVE or PVP, the level of frustration not baing able to use any skill against a good mesmer in gw1 was out of any scale. I'm still trying to make peace with gw2's mesmers, as i loved them in gw1.
But not everything feels worse than gw1 for me: the elementalist in gw2 is brilliant, much much much better than gw1

My choice was based on the terrible unfairness and terror of Rouges stealth in wow, so my first profession was Thief and that was an okay choice, Initiative kinda spoils you from the normal professions and there cool-down on skills, now that Thief can heal and give boons my first character has a fine time.
Generally picking a character as a new player is hard but if you have the character slots just start and try, sure the "new player experiences" is kinda slow for a skilled player, so now it takes longer to get a feel of a profession.
Then the old chestnut of enter in to the "PVP lobby" and try out is a still valid way to get the experiences overload and figure out if the profession is for you. good points given and hope it helps some new players

I remember always playing a druid in other MMOs.. DAoC, WoW.. I really liked the boomkins in WoW. Even before they were buffed. I was kicked out of a raiding guild because I wasn't a heal druid, I liked moonkin. And when I heard about the druid elite spec coming out in the first expansion, I was really hyped.. I was hoping it would be a dps druid with cool abilities, similar to the moonkin in WoW. I was disappointed when it was released and turned out to be purely healing. And now, more recently, they gave druid a damage component when using Celestial Avatar, so now I have a druid build again that can do damage, albeit not the best damage in the game. But still fairly decent aoe damage. Still a far cry from the moonkin, but hey.. I'll take what I can get.

  • @Cross_111

The really good thing about gw2 is that all classes have proper builds
All have good dps options - nearly all can do good offensive supports (all classes can give alac or quick! ), some have proper defensive supports, all classes can do very good open world builds and all classes can be very creative with creating unique and flavourful builds
You dont need to play optimally- just have fun!
I just must stress it that if you do more difficult team oriented content like raids, strike CMs or fractal CMs that you shouls bring a well functioning build that delivers the role you need to fill
Otherwise you could be the reason for wipes and nobody wants that ^^
But especially CMs are not that played by everybody so dont worry Hd have fun in any other gamemode

The best part of this guide: Don't assume things in this game based on other games. I would have never guessed a thief could become a mage through a specialization and completely change from cloak and dagger to literally shoot death beams with scepters. Or that my mage (elementalist) could be a tank. IDK this game is bonkers.

I’d also add that most stat builds are better as you know the game but can be really frustrating until you get better. The expansions are a lot harder, and that jump turned me off of a game for years.
Doing some trailblazers, marauders, knights, etc was so critical to surviving long enough to know how to actually play the class and improve.

i think a lot of new players might not realise that almost nothing is tied to your character. All progression made on one character is directly transferable to another. Even XP, like a max level character has many ways to accumulate xp tomes over time which can be used to get a new character max level. At default, the game gives you 3 max level boosts for free when you buy each expansion.
Sure some exceptions are stuff like gear (when equipped is account bound) or waypoints or hero points. So you do need to re-grind some stuff on new characters, but this stuff is all pretty easy to get again, and there are ways to speed it up when you have already unlocked it once (like doing high level fractals showers you with gear you can use on alts, or completing story missions gives you single-use teleports so your alts can use that to access new areas instantly).
So there really is no loss in trying out a new class. It's a very alt-friendly game, but it never demands that you make alts, it's an option if you want gameplay variety but that's about it. Personally I've got my main mesmer completing endgame content and whatever, and if i want a break from him I've got a little asura elementalist that I'm casually compleeting the story and each zone on and taking my time. And then a revenant thats parked at wyvern patriach because why not. And I still have 2 max level boosts and enough tomes for a 3rd, need to find some more spots to park alts for free resources tbh.

I started norn cause the fantasy of shapeshifting and having a pet always seemed cool to me same with melee rangers vs having your pet front line while you're in the back with the bow zzzz. Drizzt coolest ranger to bad they can't dual wield swords in this game yet. But yeah I switched out of Norn cause they are to big and bulky so a lot of transmogs dont look right. Humans ftw. Anyways I restarted on steam cause I wanted to play on my steam deck and this time around I'm probably going to main ether warrior cause they have the most weapons and dual swords plus bladesworn is a fun weeb class or guardian cause I played willbreaker and the mobility super fun.

Race really does matter for Fashion Wars 2, tho. A lot of Human MMORPGs (mainly men online roleplaying girls) have Human regret due to Norn cultural armor being superior.
First character... Guardian, because I like playing tanks and healers... and Guardians are in a good place for everything LOL. Trying to learn Mesmer these days, though.
Ranger? I love Shortbow Ranger because positioning matters so much more. Longbow Ranger is just boring, IMO.
