I have the same car with the same thing happening on cold starts, its not the chain itself its only the tensioner, only the tensioner needs to be replaced in this case
Mine had exactly the same noise. 11/2013 316d with 130,000 miles on the clock. Mechanic said it was timing chain rattle and he was correct. Timing chain kit replaced and noise is gone. Had my clutch and DMF replaced as well since mine is a manual. Expensive job..
@@ahmedalmokahl721 in the uk around £1000 if they don't take the engine out or £1300 if they do, it's better if they do take it out because it gives them more room to work so you can be sure they're doing a good job. If you go to BMW main dealer it's probably £3000-4000
@@safewaycart yeah i think you could get manuals with b47 until the G20 lci came out, then they dropped it. Imo the auto box is much better suited to the diesel cars, but I bought a manual since manuals won't be around much longer.
Engine oil service abuse, following bmw service intervals is mad. 5k oil changes max, good oil, the chain tensioners need good oil pressure and good viscosity so when the oil starts to loose viscosity the tensioners fail to give good tension. Seen n47 engines on original chain at 200k no problems. Bad apples in every car models out there nevertheless

There is a second noise that cannot be remuved without changing the entire timing chain kit ... I did replace my upper chain tensioner, only the cold start rattle noise was gonne . So you have to replace the entire kit .

I've had this noise for 100 000km then on a morning it became continuous when disasembled the engine i could take out the chain from the sprocket with my hands ... i changed the chain thankfully before damages ..

Timing chain. It will snap and destroy the other chain. Why did BMW put the timing chain at the back of the engine? Who knows. When the timing chain breaks, you’ll have to pull the head off and transmission just to replace the chains. Crazy.

As I understand This noise is causing coming from "chain tensioner" is not tensioning instantly due chain is streched. After oil pump works and tension spring got streched noise ends.

@@mussie3164 no loud noise of chain whilst driving on mine. It was only on start up for about 5-6 secs. Got a vid of my chain before they replaced it, was very loose. Cost me £850. Travelled to Leeds. Will change oil soon aswell.
Do the timing chain issues happen at low mileage? I'm on 51 000 miles and my 320d makes a weird sound about seconds after cold start at the front left of the engine bay. Or is it crank pulley? It doesn't make the noise when it is nice and warm. I change the oil every 7000 miles ever since new. Not sure what it is and I'm worried.
Chain rattle should be heard best from back of the engine as it is located there, crank pulley has knocking noise when it is on it’s way out or play(moving sideways few mm)

My timing chain rattles maybe 1-2 seconds after a cold start. Really very briefly. I've been driving like this for 10,000km and was even recently in the workshop where a mechanic listened to the noise. There I was told not to worry and there was no need to change the timing chain. I'm not entirely sure, but just trust what the mechanic said. After all, I've been driving around like this for 10,000km 🙃

I might have the timing chain changed in the summer as a preventive measure. After all, I've been driving with this noise for almost 30,000km now
Mine does the same only if cold and 1/2 seconds. Noticed right now but i could have been driving my car like this for who knows how many KM. Had it checked out by mechanic and he said not to worry about it. Car still going strong at 230.000 km.
I have f30 318d 120000km, same noise at startup, when cold engine there is longer , when hot, shorter. Problem is ofcourse timing chain or maybe just a tensioner, but should replace all ofcourse. But hey man, 120000 km... That is problem because previous owner changed oil at 30000, which is "official interval"... People, change your oils like always in past, 10-12-15 k.

Depends on how stretched your chain is, I changed mine and it made no difference at all

+ with that mileage you shouldn’t have an issue with chain, unless oil has been changed once only. They start up at around 100k miles

@@Lamelldiff Changed the whole belt and pulley system and the noise is gone, not sure which particular pulley or belt it was though.
I changed the whole timing chain kit and after 1500 km the noise came back . All parts are oem
distributie, ieri am schimbat la x1 si avea acelasi zgomot. s a lungit lantul de sus, cel de la axa cu came.
Am schimbat-o la scurt timp și eu, tot cu lanțul de sus aveam și eu probleme.
Si cum de s-a lungit si se aude doar 2 secunde. Dupa se scurtează automat? Numai prostii aberati, ca sa vina fraierii sa schimbe distributiile la voi.

That sounds like the chain is 4 seconds lose or the "Chain tensionery" are 4 seconds lose. I would change it immediately
