Here you can hear the difference between BMW N47 disel engine sound, when chains MUST be changed and after all three chains, tensioners and sprockets were changed.
At 00:11-00:17 you can clearly hear noise like "Shk"-"Shk"-"Shk" coming from the timing chains.
At changing process noticed, that all chains were longer than new ones, and there was an impressive free movement between all the pieces of chain. It was very risky to drive with old ones.
After change all these noises disappeared.
You have just took away all my worries. Thank you for a simple but very informative video.
Thanks from Scotland
Same here. I just brought n47, start worries about chain after all "snapping" comments, now I can sleep peacefully. Thank You very much
For those that can't make out the difference; listen out for what could be somewhat compared to (in this video's audio, at least) either a slight "shaker" musical instrument sound or a subtle auxiliary belt inconsistency noise. Thanks Headliner for posting this; seen a few videos but it's nice to have a decent before & after for reference. That's the only annoyance with diesels, they're that noisy to begin with that it's not easy to tell when something's wrong or right haha!
Sadly this motor is jus not really a silent one but the tone is slightly lower before an after
Great description.
I have an N47 with 120k miles on it. This is the best example yet of what to listen for. Thank you for posting.
Thanks for this.
Was unlucky enough to snap my timing chain not knowing this was a weakness with the car a while back and had to replace the engine.
This saves me from a lot of worrying
It was an extremely informative video. Thank you so much! I was really struggling to find differences
Almost no différences
Thank you, recently bough n47 520d , engine seemed noisy only after I bought it , but sounds completely like your “after” , they are a loud engine
Lol. Have just bought one as well... And thought absolutely same thing..
All the new diesel owners need to allow their ears to adjust to the noisier tractor🚜 sounds … saying that my ears are use to the 330d sound whereas the 3/520s are noisier.
It’s a diesel after all. My N52 E90 is a Tesla compared to this sound
Thanks for sharing this 👍
This is a really useful video. Thanks.
thanks! this video is super useful!
Funny that it sounds like worn bearing on auxiliary belt drive...thanks for sharing, exactly the video I was looking for
Konrad Knysak , exactly! But noise comes from the back of engine.
I had this noise on my e90 my2008 since had 65k km. At 185k km BMW recalled my car for fixing the timing chain issue and that noise never disappeared. Due to the low frequency compared to engine rpm I always thought it was some bearing or alternator or stuff touching something. Also it's less audible when starting the A/C.
@@headliner4936 please brother you have email or facebook or something? want to send you a video of mine and see what you think? thank you please
@@headliner4936 mine is only 56.000 miles too
@@blizzylikedrizzy8731could you please upload your video on some cloud storage and post a video private link here?
good video, thanks
I can hear that slight shaker noise if I listen for it, my car has only done 61k miles, I know there was a recall for the tensioner, I don't know if that is still active and I don't know if it's worth only getting the tensioner done or whether I should just get the whole chain kit done. either way my car is over serviced and has an oil change every 6k miles I hear people saying it's a noticable rattle, mine is like this but not as loud. it doesn't sound too worrisome yet and it's been like it for 10k miles, when I bought it I pointed it out but was told it was nothing. it's been a good car so far. might be worth just getting it done. with a new timing chain kit and up to date tensioners how long should the chain last?
Massive differance, smoother
I can clearly hear the difference. How many thousand km did the chain change? If there is no sound, do I need to change it?
Mine made no sound at all and snapped while cruising at 79 mph. Mini had it a month before to give it the once over as well.
nice video
Thanks for sharing this, mine has a similar sound, but it hasn't got worse since i bought the car. Was it the upper guide rail on yours deteriorating and causing chain stretch? I kind of want to fix mine but also can't be arsed, might just sell it and buy an older bmw with a more reliable engine.
Jay Patel , the upper chain is streching due to normal loads on these engines (material and technology of chain is too weak). As i know, these chains must be changed after 100-120k km. If you don’t change, the stretched chain starts making noise after 110k-120k km. If you hear that noise, it is better to change now, if you don’t want chain to break off and change the engine later. And there will not be any progress in that noise, usually it just break off and thats all. The mechanic was shocked, when touched the chain before taking it off, because every peace of chain was moving free in all directions and was damaged if compare with new one . I wish I could include this in my video...
@@headliner4936 yeah its annoying they wear so quickly, mines on 110k miles, which is about 176k kilometres so its definitely worn, however i do think a big factor is they way its been driven and serviced. Currently i can't even drive much anyway so I'll probably leave it for a bit. I know for some people the sound gets worse and i do check the sound carefully, hopefully it stays strong 🤞🏽
@@headliner4936 will the new chain also need to be changed again after 110-120k km ?
@@user-qz6ix7od3b I saw more N47 with original ODO and original chains at about 220000 than needed replacement, and aftermarket parts are usualy normal quality. So I would say you should listen for noises when engine is hot and starting cold. If When hot you can hear noises like in rhe video- change your chains. If you hear strange noises like not strenghten chain hitting tensioner for few seconds when starting cold - change your chains now!
I would not recommend Without any noises changing chains, because these engines can say a lot about chains with their noise when cold or hot

Tshh tshh tshhh sound, got it! Thank you.
Wauw thanks for the video
Hi I have a 2009 118 se 2.0 diesel auto coupe has 135000miles. My engine sounds ok but when I pull off (accelerate from stationary) when engine is cold I get a weird swishing sound for a few seconds. Once the car is warmed up it doesn't seem to do it. Is that the chain hitting the guides? Been doing it all this year. Had the car three years no issues. I do very few miles as just a weekend car. But listening to the engine reving it as you have done in the video it hasn't got that background shaker sound as far as I can make out. Many thanks
As I understand, that noise is under engine load only. I would say, that noise is not connected with chains.
On cold (especially if it is cold outside - I mean minus degrees) when you accelerate, that noise normal for N47, but if your glow plugs doesn’t work, that noise becomes louder.
If there is no additional heating in cylinder while engine is cold, diesel compression and ignition is very loud.
So I would recommend to start from checking your glow pugs and relay.
People who have commented saying "I can't hear a difference" aren't mechanically inclined. That tsk tsk tsk, or machine gun rattle is quite the tell tale sign. My missus' N47 equipped countryman is on about 106k miles and that evident back end rattle is quite prominent in the cold. The fact that it sounds like a John Deere afterwards is indeed how a diesel lump is meant to sound like.
If you want to hear a rattly camchain, just rev up any Kawasaki or Honda 600CC supersports from the late 90's or early noughties which has done about 16-20k miles and you can definitely hear the tick tick tick tick sound.
On the contrary, my OM646 C220D which has 130k miles doesn't sound as rattly as yours did on start up (or my missus' countryman for that matter). It's just a bitch of a job to do!
Thanks for pointing out the difference! Didn't know what I was looking for before
Hi mate, was wondering if I could get your opinion on the sound of my N47 ? It sounds very similar to yours in the “after changed”’ video but it doesn’t seem like there is much difference with the engines being loud anyways, but I am not the most experienced with diesel cars. Much appreciated if I could send you a video. Thanks
Send it to me. I've had quite a few diesel engines. Audi a4 and a6 V6 180hp, BMW 150hp 320d, mercedes c220 cdi and more. Just send it
@@MrTheBlastGamer Bad noise from n47 is always timing chain! Or maybe not? I would so much like your opinion in the strange noise from my wife's n47. Could be something else - but I really need advice. I posted a clip to describe the noise: ruclips.net/video/odrC04YzQ-Q/видео.html
On the same boat with you.
I'm wondering if mine problem is the same but sound is more irregular than yours, and I can hear it mostly only on idle. I can hear it louder from the back of the car rather than in front.
If this is chain noise, noise comes from the back of engine. Better you can hear behind both front wheels.
Hi mate. What's chain were most extended and worsen condition than from of this three ones you changed?
Hi! As usual the upper (camshaft) chain is streched most. And it’s the reason of noise.
very good
The engine sounds perfect now
I've had thissame infamous swishing sound for 3 years now and i've been kinda worried it's the chain. It's been getting much worse this autumn and today I finally got up to checking it by taking off the belt and the noise is completely gone, no swishing sound. The belt itself was from 2008 and so is the car so the pulleys are likely original too. Bought new tensioner, delfection pulley and the belt and gonna change them tomorrow. Hope this fixes it.
I replaced them but the sound is still there when the belt is on. Without belt no swishing, I think it's the alternator bearing
@@axuli99 what about the crank harmonic balancer? These can fail too with cracks in the rubber but hard to see.
@@406xud Very well could be, I'm not gonna replace it for now since it's kind of expensive. It could be any of the remaining pulleys. I'll be changing waterpump soon and i'll report back if that could be the one but highly doubt.
@@axuli99I changed my alternators last summer bc the battery was not getting charged. I drive a 320d from late 2010 and the swirling sound was gone after the change. My mech changed the belt, tensioner and alternator. If you changed all except that part, the bearing is almost toast. Check if your Voltage is properly loaded when you are driving.
Good

Hello, the noise is that of many very small metal parts shaking in the background. Is it possible for you to show the old chain, sprokets and tensioner, just to compare the noise level to the amount of wear? Some people say that as long as you keep the engine oil clean you might interrupt the wearing process on all the components.
Sorry, but I haven't old ones on video.
Yes, apparently, frequent, short cold journeys add to the risk of this issue, and the lack of relevant early oil changes for such driving patterns.
@@marksargent2908 I would like to know if the B47 engine is different and where it differs (different chain layout? oil pump? sprokets? chain tensioner?)

Mine started at around 120k km and lasted till 142k until it was fixed. Every three chain and guides, sprockets etc. Now it sounds just like a tractor compared to before chain fix it had that metallic periodic sound in idle when engine was warm. However, there was no chain noise when the engine was cold (< 50 deg engine temp)
