Do frequent oil changes, let it warm up, drive it like you stole it then let it cool down. Do this and you won't need to change anything.
Maybe turbo but that is ok
Every single n47 blows around 150k. Timing chain is badly designed and designed to break.
@@doubleL_S plenty in Autotrader with 200k+, one had 264,000!
@@doubleL_S have you ever even had one or are just basing your terribly wrong opinion on random internet horror stories? My N47 E92 is at 400k km (or 250k miles) and running incredibly strong, even passed emissions test with DPF off and stage 1 tune :)
@@mtaFTW I just spent 2500 on it getting 2 chains repaired and the entire top end replacing. They're weak.
Ive gone from 119k km to 173k km in my e90 320d n47, only done oil changes, it runs like a dream, pulls hard!
George that's good sound advice, worked at a BMW dealers for 15 years, the School run X5s and 1 Series Diesels were the worst. But the same cars when owned by motorway high milers we saw less issues. The emissions gear is for a perfect world , we don't live in a perfect world and why i chose to delete EGR system and ran straight pipe on my old 530.
great stuff all the time pal keep up the good channel

Spot on George. Yes £1k got me a full chains replacement at 172k. I could hear the engine getting noisier on a cold start. She was like a new car afterwards. Now my oil cooler gaskets gone at 195k which I’m replacing at weekend. ✊

@liviu7017 No symptoms except big oil leaks, but it wasn't caused by the timing chain, just the previous owner lack of care. Just change it, and you're good for 100-150k km:)
I’ve recently got my chain replaced, the crank vibration damper was extremely lose. Runs like a dream now 😌

Easiest way to see if your manifold is full of carbon is undo the air-charge sensor bolted onto the manifold with one 10mm bolt, check the hole in the sensor itself and make sure it's not blocked with carbon (unblock it carefully with something plastic, don't push too hard into the sensor). Then with a phone light you'll just be able to see into the manifold through the hole where the sensor came from and how bad it is. It's not a hard job to remove the manifold, decoke and refit giving the ports at the same time. A caustic soda bath will clean the manifold perfectly and won't attack the plastic, leaving it looking like it just came out the factory, in some cases giving you a noticable boost in power if it was badly coked. Don't forget to remove any sensors or electrical components before giving it a bath ;)
Don't waste your money on a hydrogen clean, it will do absolutely nothing to remove carbon build up in the manifold but it will empty your pocket somewhat with no real world benefit.
If your top timing chain is stretched and tensioner is loose it'll rattle on cold start for a couple of seconds, middle chain will make a wooshing sound at 1500rpm when engine is warm. Any of these noises are a cause for concern and it needs a full timing kit ASAP. N47 engines can suffer from broken chains from as little as 85,000 miles depending on the number of services and oil quality.
Cheap rates for any of these jobs for George's subscribers around the Merseyside area :D
Yep that’s the MAP sensor👍🏻

Where abouts is the MAP sensor located please on an N57 engine?
Great video George, very supportive. Since changing oil regularly is by far most important thing on these engines, pls share some sugestions on oils to be used.
Use a good brand synthetic low ash oil. This is important for your dpf. The bottle will have a rating on the back if it’s low ash. At least in America they do. Change every 3-4000 depending on driving habits and enjoy your car. Do not under any circumstances fall for the “annual, 10,000 mile” oils they sell. In a typical car this may be okay. But not in these

George, great work here. Just acquired a 320d 2009 with 78k on the clock. The swirl flaps have immediately thrown a wobbly so trying to decide on whether to go down the delete route or not. Anything else you would recommend I tend to whilst I’m going to be digging around in the engine bay?
Thanks
Excellent video, very clear and informative. I'm looking to get my timing chain replaced (N47) as a precautionary measure before it has the chance to do any significant damage. Any tips for finding someone as thorough as you?! Do you do paid work on subscribers cars or do you only work on your own cars? Your content is extremely helpful for novices such as me - keep it coming!
I can do some work Chris but nothing major as I don’t have a lot of time or space. I can do servicing, drive belt kit, EGR delete etc.

on our diesels i dip our map sensors in acetone a couple of times a year and clean egr valve, keeps them running well
Hello ..the n47 18d does not have butterflies or actuator ... I am very interested to know if that collector works for the 20d because they are different references ...
Great video mate, thanks for all the valuable info, just picked up a x6 m50d f16, so this info is priceless, defo will do a egr delete and dpf..
Welcome mate!
Remember it is illegal...
So fat on my 520d 2008 i ve replaced the big pulley ,the tensioner and accessories belt, oil pan gasket, the battery ,the coolant ,the brakes fluid and next is the alternator because sometimes doesn’t charge the battery, the servo fluid and i hope in the summer to get the timming chain and gearbox oil changed 👍
Well said brother. There’s no such thing as too many oil changes. Black oil ruins everything!
Tell us how you get round the MOT...few have asked and that's probably what's stopping most people from doing it, I know you can gut the dpf and it's only a visual inspection but what about the egr?
My best tip is use a decent oil. I used to use NAPA 5W-30 for my 67 reg F30 335D X drive N57 engine, as I got it at a heavily discounted price due to a family member working for a motor factor company, but always found that the throttle response and power produced wasn't as good as I recalled it being when using the NAPA oil.
Having recently had the oil changed 3 days ago, and this time using CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 BMW Longlife 04 oil it performs MUCH better. I used to have to put the car gearbox in sport mode by pushing the gear selector to the left for overtakes. Since this oil change I now don't have to do that, the kickdown and power is where it should be.
Look into some products made by "Hotshots Secret", they might have an oil additive that you may like. Do your own research on them. Might simply be something that you would like to add to your maintenance plan. And, it might not be, but just suggesting to check their products out. No, I do not work for them lol
I've always been tempted to do an EGR delete - but then I read about burnt exhaust valves and cooked turbochargers ... as the EGR system keeps combustion temperatures down.
Well said George 👍👍👍
Thanks Joey!
Beautiful your words
Hi George! I have already changed my time chain kit at 180k km and now i have 280k km... when you recommend to change it again? Thanks man!
After "get rid of the EGR" job should we modify the software of the car in some way ?
Hi. Can someone help me. I have a n47 engine in my car. Should i remove the egr and swivel flaps together as they both a Faulty. The egr valve is stuck open and intake manifold is leaking oil from valve swivl motor. Also if I take these two component out then do I have to remap the car. If I do then what's involved in remapping. Kind regards.
Helpful alot
Hi George, I've seen recon engine replacements online for around £1800 (says with new chain etc) are these to be avoided, and just do the work you mentioned ?
I want to mention if you have bad flywheel or bad crankshaft pulley on n47 you can stretch ur timing chain from all those of vibrations. It is best to maintain this engine. I have e90 n47 177hp and omg it had so many problems at 322k kilometers it started to make timing chain rattle. So i pulled out gearbox i saw clutch wasnt in the great condition flywheel had all that liquid from ir falling out dpf was fully damaged idk how my turbo wasnt damaged that much. So change all The gaskets timing chain flywheel pulley belts removed dpf egr is still in place but programmed out swirl flaps removed and now has a remap 206hp and 411nm best daily driver. And by The way timing chain was still original on 322k kilometers. I bought it at 287k kilometers.
Im getting fault code 3f25 and my car goes limp mode randomly. II have removed dpf and egr. What problem it can be?
Is the B47 any better than the N47 where timing chain and general reliability are concerned?
I have everything off egr, dpf , also hybrid turbo and 3.5 d injectors ... 360 hp and 700 nm and is a beast very good consumption also .
Nice
On a 320d?
If you dont mind me asking what turbo, thinking of doing this on my mini sd.
Will chaindie soon :)
@@yashmann uses the same stock turbo but making it a hybrid turbo at a turbo shop, bigger injectors like he said 335d injectors and bigger intercooler :D
Did you remove the vacuum hoses for the egr or block them off in some way?

how do you pass the technical inspection? In Germany wouldn't be possible without EGR and DPF!
Hi i have a 2016 535d with full service history and 40.000 miles on it .whats your thoughts on a stage 1 remap?
Hi George do you offer doing any of these jobs you’ve pointed out?I would like it doing but would only have it done by someone who knows what they are doing.cheers
my 08 e82 n47 is still pulling like a train after 161k (uk, so thats miles) and still haven't changed the Timing chain, I change the oil and filter every year in Jan from when i brought it in 2017 :)

Premium fuel, regular oil changes and other service items done and now on 250k on n57 f10.
Same here except I use regular diesel. It's the same fuel and I don't think additives are worth the extra price.
I'll just buy injector and exhaust system cleaning additives separately.

Change oil and filters every 10-12k km and you could change timing chain at 200-250k km.
My cranck pulley failed and i replaced the belt and tensioner wheels (Y) and i have to change the glow system relay
Ive changed my timing chain on e92 2009.

Still got the car and love it.....but ulez in london is telling me i cant drive it no.more. :(
how long has to be min. that journey?
Is it not an MOT fail to delete the egr and dpf?
how does soot get in the intake...? its a vacuum?
Is it 15v too much from the alternator ??
Can you recommend who can change timing chain for 1k like you mentioned
Hi George really like your honesty and videos but once you have deleted the egr valve do you have to re map the ECU and if so any advice on how to thank you.

Hi George! I just disabled EGR by programming on my 2012 e91 320d so it physically is in place but the valve is programmed to stay closed. DPF will be let in place because in Finland they may start measuring counter pressures in MOT tests.
Hi George again! If u have time, could u answer me please: is it wise to remove swirl flaps on N47 after EGR programming?
How did you manage to disable the EGR valve - what software or tool did you use?
I went to a BMW specialist. 50€ and 30 mins and he disabled the EGR valve by coding something with computer. I think number 1 was changed to 0 that the valve is closed all the time.

hi george thanks for the informative content !, ive purchased a 2012 bmw 316d 2.0 pretty sure its the n47 engine, Needs the DMF replacing as rattling a lot so ive bought the full LUK kit clutch and DMF being fitted in the next couple weeks, its done 150 thou so it been on a journey, Im getting maf sensor code but thats clean ive had it off, assuming it may be an EGR issue instead, I have seen darkside developments do the full blanking kit for the EGR but do you then get EML light on ? i suppose it would need to be mapped out of the ECU ?
Yes needs mapped out after removing
Most people assume EGR issues when rough idle on cold starts. It's a simple case of changing the engine glow plugs as they're not just there to assist compression in cold temperatures. They're used by the DME (diesel engine management system) as a sensor to ensure smooth operation of the engine. It's basic maintenance as you would change spark plugs on a petrol engine (although they are far more difficult to remove without breaking). And to anyone who thinks removing the EGR is a good idea: bear in mind the engine was designed (and it costs €Bn to make an engine) from the ground up to run with FAP and EGR. For example EGR reduces engine load / stress during light throttle applications.
I am looking to get this done to my 520d but worried about passing MOT with them removed. Would I have to reinstall them for emission tests?
I’ve never had an issue
My timing chain snapped sooo true ....
Hi George, if the EGR is removed will that have an effect on the emissions test at the MOT cheers
I wouldn't worry about that. I have egr mapped out and it didn't fail.
Isn’t removal of the dpf system an mot failure ?
George hi happy Sunday I have one question on what City you live and you video is good
ye where you live that i can avoid breathing polluted air from your exhaust ;-).
I had my EGR valve the small metal pipe get a split and had black smoke in my car inside and gave my wife headache for a few weeks till I found the problem. Then bmw made me pay £900 to fit a new small radiator and pipe
BMW and all garages likes to steal money from us.

Wouldn’t hurt to change it all now👍🏻
Wont it fail an MOT test with the EGR and DPF removed?

Sounds like limp mode
Hi mate very nicely explained, only question. Im getting my dpf physically removed and downpipe fitted. Do i need to get the egr removed or can i be just disabled via software (remap)
Remove it bud
No, you don’t need to remove it if it’s been turned off in the remap
@@kellly2803 I’d suggest removing it, it can get sticky and sometimes will still open and close.
@@piovo5222 Yes you’re right, but if you blank it off and map it out then it’s not necessary to remove. I would leave it in purely for inspection purposes it looks like it’s there and working than an empty space sticking out in the engine bay. It’s Illegal to remove it in most European countries

Fine to replace gasket unless cover is cracked
Yeap dvsa have a real issue with this mod.
If they stop you it not to much of an issue though.
You just have to refit all the bits you've removed before you allowed to take your car away.
One question, if you remove the EGR and DPF, will the car have black smoke from behind when you floor it
Not if mapped properly and the engine is healthy
Having some issues with dropping coolant level in my n57 325d 57000 miles. I've had it pressure tested twice and two leaks were found, I've had these leaks fixed and it seems it's still losing coolant but at a slower rate. I'm not getting any blue or white smoke out the exhaust and no change in performance so I don't think it's head gasket, maybe an internal hairline crack in the egr valve? Great video as always!

Yeah there was a recall for the egr cooler i received a letter from bmw last year.
I also did have problem with EGR cooler (was leaking) and had to replace EGR. So it seems that this issue is known in BMW world (520d).

Hey George!
Do you also find that the N47 has a lot of internal pressure from the oil filling tube?

Same issue on my 123d. 🤔
I have an E61 525d LCI from 2007 Steptronic with what corresponds to 220.000 miles on the clock. Still on same timing chain and turbo. I have both the EGR and DPF fitted. However I do all service myself with more frequent oil changes than recommended and also, cleaning EGR system including intake manifold regularly (every around 50.000 miles). I have had the car for 6½ years now and being driving nearly 100.000 miles out of the 220.000 miles myself. You need to be able to maintain a car like this yourself or it will not last and it will ruin your budget.
👍🏻
What timing chain would you recommend ? FAI or BGA?
I linked the exact kit in the timing chain replacement videos👍🏻
As far as oil services go, I would recommend getting oil samples in and making a determination on the type of mileage you put on. One person's 5000kms can be much different than the next. And one person's oil choice may be different than the next. No sense needlessly changing oil when a lab can tell you.
Run 8000 kms and test it to see if you can go longer or shorter. Simple.
without dpf will it pass mot? my car is 2009 model. I had egr deleted but it still on it .if I take dpf off the car .Will it still pass mot?
