This is a really good video providing a detailed overview of the potential problems with this engine. In fact, based upon this video, I was looking at the purchase of a 2011 520d, and when examining the vehicle closely, I found a number of the issues highlighted. So, for me, I say thank you, George......

An issue that goes missed is the hydraulic valve rocker lifters - crud gets into them causing them to lock. It's a cam-carrier off job to remove, check & clean them. If you neglect oil changes, chances are the turbo will grenade first before anything else - bits of it will get ingested & cause damage, usually to cylinder 1. How much damage varies.
EGR, DPF & swirl flap deletes ought be first priority, however if the car has miles done, a substantial clean-up will be required as part of the delete - intake manifold & ports on the head will be heavily clogged, they need cleaning out. We use walnut blasting/parts washer, but you can try doing it using sprays etc - it just isn't as effective/is a pita.
If you doubt the need for a clean up as part of EGR/DPF/Swirl deletes, I have a few shorts up on my channel showing the level of crap that will have built up over time. "Lots" being the gist.
Oh, and Subbed btw, George. :-)

Good informative video George, I can verify all those faults as on my 2nd engine (ext warranty) @400k miles! 1st one replaced after 201k miles and on the 2nd engine, damper wheel came off at 185k miles last year. The engine was rebuilt but failed this May nearing its 200k miles - in garage at the moment with loss of compression on cylinder 4 and swirl flap fault, being assessed in what is covered under warranty or not.....

    Thanx Geroge.
maintenance is crucial, no doubt. BMW service schedule says 30000 km or 24months ... This is UNREASONABLE. EGR contaminates the engine hard, so I change oil & filter every 15000km. And hope to avoid timeingchain trouble. To "cut off" the EGR system should be a good intervention ... But I suspect that the ECU will "alarm", as my N47D20c is an "EU6" "Dieselgate" version (no AdBlue system).

I have the N47[C] on an X1. 115,000 miles. Mpg suddenly dropped from 37 to 29. Flex pipe was cracked, but with new flex pipe, problem still there. I just do mainly shortish journeys these days so just sprayed Wynn's EGR cleaner (£8) into the manifold while parked in Halford's car park. Too early to say if it helped but this video gives me great insights. Thank You Very Much.

Hi George, I have a 2013 520D with the N47 at 95k miles. I have had a couple of issues recently diagnosed as a boost leak that a new reinforced intake manifold sorted but I am currently on the may back from a very long European drive 1000+ miles and have a new issue that keeps happening. I have recently also spent quite a bit of time effort and money trying to diagnose a shudder at 70-80mph with mechanics suggesting control arms, buckled wheels and tyres as the likely culprit. All wrong. Now I think this shake/shudder is a symptom of what else is going on…… This warning hasn’t come on previously, I use the car locally normally, not going for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Now with the car full with the family, fuel and suitcases I still get the shudder but is much worse going up long steady steep inclines AND DECLINES! but is joined with a Drivetrain warning telling me to drive moderately, full performance is not available and to seek BMW service support. I have read it’s possibly glow plugs, injectors or High pressure fuel pump that could be the issue. Any advice very welcome….

Hi George, I have a 2009 118D with the N47 at 120,000 miles. The car has developed only what I can describe as a 'surge' at around 1,500 rpm; the car tends to jerk under constant throttle, so to speak. This is intermittent, but I have noticed that it doesn't do it when the blowers/heaters are OFF. Scoured the web, and it seems to be a common problem that nobody has got to the bottom of. Recently has EGR valve replacement, along with glow plugs and a glow plug module. Have you come across this surging issue before? Great channel. I have carried out lots of repairs based on your videos. Best wishes, Graham

Hi, I've got issue with my N47 engine and I was wondering if you'd have an idea on this.
When driving at about 70km/h the car suddenly jerked as it has lost some power and started shaking as it was running at 3 cylinders only.
The performance went down very much, and the shaking is worst when idling. The car is also very loud , it almost sounds like a tank and inside I can smell burning plastic.
There's no warning light on the dashboard and diagnostic has pointed out some problem with swirl flaps.
Do you think it's possible my engine is destroyed by broken swirl flap? Or could this be a faulty injector ?
Any help appreciated , keep up the videos !

Yet when I look at the MAF readings at idle they fluctuate between 0g/s and about 16g/s. 👉👉👉Help please: i own 2008 bmw x3 e83 2.0D 4x4 automatic with 145000 km (110000 miles) on the counter.A couple months back i had issues with rough idle. When i would start the engine for the first 20-40 seconds rev's would go up and down with a bit of a white smoke from the exhaust. I cleaned the injectors/new kit, new glow plugs with new module....car is fully serviced, so no issues there. Still when starting the engine i have rough idle for 10-15 seconds (no smoke) and as well while driving form low speed and when it comes to around 1000-1100 rpm's looses power/hiccup...and when i pass those revs all is fine.
I checked maf sensor, i have put new one for the test, same happened...
Is it maybe the fuel pump or something else...PLEASE advice!!!

    • @GeorgeAusters
      @GeorgeAusters  5 лет назад +4

Apparently removing the EGR can make the DPF clog faster as all the exhaust gases will be going through the exhaust not through the intake. However logically this doesn’t make sense because the DPF will regenerate and clear the soot as long as the engine gets up to temp regardless of whether the EGR is in place or not👍🏻
Easy solution is to remove them both😊

Had a stage 1 done to my 2009 E60 and after a few weeks I've noticed diesel fumes coming into the car especially when starting and idling. Replaced the crank case breather pipe you mentioned as garage said it was broken. I'm sure I checked it earlier and it wasn't 🤔. Still have fumes coming in. Garage said it's not a crack in the manifold either. Any ideas? Cheers in advance.

    • @GeorgeAusters

Diesel fumes means the exhaust has cracked somewhere or there is a fuel leak. Could possibly be on the EGR system. The pipe that bolts onto the exhaust manifold is prone to cracking.
Also check on top of your rocker cover for pools of diesel if the leak off pipes are dripping. Keep me updated how you get on mate👍🏻

Hi George, have you ever had problems with the turbo actuator? Mine keeps going into limp mode at certain revs, can hear the turbo flutter on acceleration then reduced power comes up on dash but no EML or code! (I have scanned with INPA & ISTA D) and will boost normally upto 3k and then its like the ecu cuts all power and becomes "gutless"
I'm also low on boost but turbo is good and has acceptable movement on the turbine.
When I bought the car it had no boost at all (actuator linkage was loose, tightened and was perfect afterwards) but have checked that again and it's fine.
Any ideas how to check correct operation of the actuator seeing as it's electronic?
When I unlock the car or open the bonnet you can hear the actuator "ticking" like it's trying to "initialise" it.
Car does boost, although like I say not as well as it used to.
