This is a really good video providing a detailed overview of the potential problems with this engine. In fact, based upon this video, I was looking at the purchase of a 2011 520d, and when examining the vehicle closely, I found a number of the issues highlighted. So, for me, I say thank you, George......
An issue that goes missed is the hydraulic valve rocker lifters - crud gets into them causing them to lock. It's a cam-carrier off job to remove, check & clean them. If you neglect oil changes, chances are the turbo will grenade first before anything else - bits of it will get ingested & cause damage, usually to cylinder 1. How much damage varies. EGR, DPF & swirl flap deletes ought be first priority, however if the car has miles done, a substantial clean-up will be required as part of the delete - intake manifold & ports on the head will be heavily clogged, they need cleaning out. We use walnut blasting/parts washer, but you can try doing it using sprays etc - it just isn't as effective/is a pita. If you doubt the need for a clean up as part of EGR/DPF/Swirl deletes, I have a few shorts up on my channel showing the level of crap that will have built up over time. "Lots" being the gist. Oh, and Subbed btw, George. :-)

Good informative video George, I can verify all those faults as on my 2nd engine (ext warranty) @400k miles! 1st one replaced after 201k miles and on the 2nd engine, damper wheel came off at 185k miles last year. The engine was rebuilt but failed this May nearing its 200k miles - in garage at the moment with loss of compression on cylinder 4 and swirl flap fault, being assessed in what is covered under warranty or not.....

If you hear rattling when you're sat in the car, go directly to your garage. My chain failed and the engine rebuild cost me circa £2000. Had I had the work done before hand it would have cost half as much. The car has been great ever since.
My car (2007 e90 320d 163hp) is on 167k never had the timing chain replaced, the egr is still on, I’m planning to do an egr delete but I’m worried that it may cause problems in the long run, i service the car every 8k-10k with Castrol edge oil, how ever as of lately I’ve noticed a lack of power and throttle response, any tips of what i can do to resolve this would be much appreciated
where did you buy your EGR block plates / EGR delete kit from? and who tuned your car to then remove the EGR system from the software to have your car running normal? thanks
Apparently removing the EGR can make the DPF clog faster as all the exhaust gases will be going through the exhaust not through the intake. However logically this doesn’t make sense because the DPF will regenerate and clear the soot as long as the engine gets up to temp regardless of whether the EGR is in place or not👍🏻 Easy solution is to remove them both😊
Hi, maybe someone has idea why my injectors clamps (holders) snaps (cracks). Got changed all 4 about month ago and again one of them snapped. What can cost this problem? Screwing bolt too hard ??? Or if it been chipped (I'm not sure, last owner said it has chip) so injectors makes too much pressure and cost this problem??? Have no idea, would like to hear your thoughts. Hello George, I own a 320d Touring X Drive from 2013. The car was been serviced quite regurarly, 14000 Kms give or take for oil changes. The car has 117000kms. Would you change the timing chain if you were in my place? Do the latest N47s have any difference so are less prone to failure. Sorry for the long post. Nicolas
Hey man! Just a quick question. Does EGR delete contribute to MOT failure due to high emissions etc? Have you ever had a problem with emissions on MOT after egr delete...thanks in advance
Thanks for this. I have a fault which someone else may know about. On my F30 N47 car, I smell slight smell of oil/fumes in the cabin coming through the vents if I switch the fan completely off. Not all the time but most of the time. Initially I thought it might be leaking gasket or oil leak around filter or previous oil spillage onto exhaust manifold - but cannot spot any of these. Any advice appreciated.
I'd say your air intake manifold is leaking at the front. Lift off the engine cover. Check to see if there're traces of black on the sponge underneath. If so G is doing a video soon on repairing it. Manifold is 800quid from bmw.
@@aerosert1992 sorry still have the issue, just living with it by making sure blower is always on more than 3 bars. 2 mechanics couldn’t find an issue, no leaks around engine. I Plan to get a boroscope camera down through all the air vents in the summer, I think it’s going to be DIY diagnose/fix it yourself issue! Please do let me know if you resolve yours.
@@aerosert1992 if it helps, one other thing I have noticed about this issue is that it’s worse when the fan mode is blowing at the windscreen. If you change the mode to straight ahead (to your face) it’s much reduced. Good luck.
Which is the best petrol engine on 5 series after 2016? I do a lot of short rides as my city is small so I am not shure is diesel good option... I do 10k km per year.
The chain's go from 25k (mainly down to the silly service intervals) had mine since 16k has 120k on now, when I 1st got it I did high miles, now lucky if I do 5k a year, but gets serviced every year, when I did more miles, it got serviced twice a year. Also personally don't think its a good idea to remove the egr cooler, as its part of the cooling system, that needs to go round the system, but I might be wrong...?
Common problems timming chain guides made of plastic and hydraulic tensioner teeth where very badand don't hold tensioner no more even with good oil pressure it's just fails and guides break up and do damage to rocker cover break cracks cover and chain flops about making all sorts of noise ,, 1500 fitted any BMW
Very good videos George. I brought a 2010 318d msport with 75k on the clock about a month ago. Now been told the timing chain needs changing. Don't suppose you fancy doing mine as well do you 😂. Just joking. Would you recommend doing the clutch and flywheel at the same time?
@@GeorgeAusters thanks for replying I just got the car like 1 month ago didn't know much about BMWs as this is my first it has 150k miles on the clock is it more likely the chain was changed but don't know for sure as there's little history about the car.
I smell all the time exhousf gas in the cabin when the car is idle when i drive no smell at all. If i remove egr valve does it get any better ? My car is F10 2012 5.20d
Had a stage 1 done to my 2009 E60 and after a few weeks I've noticed diesel fumes coming into the car especially when starting and idling. Replaced the crank case breather pipe you mentioned as garage said it was broken. I'm sure I checked it earlier and it wasn't 🤔. Still have fumes coming in. Garage said it's not a crack in the manifold either. Any ideas? Cheers in advance.
Diesel fumes means the exhaust has cracked somewhere or there is a fuel leak. Could possibly be on the EGR system. The pipe that bolts onto the exhaust manifold is prone to cracking. Also check on top of your rocker cover for pools of diesel if the leak off pipes are dripping. Keep me updated how you get on mate👍🏻
Hi George. I have a Aug 2009 build E88 and the info by the drivers door that states tyre pressure, colour code etc states my car has N47D20C ? is this definitly a 184BHP and where will it be located on the engine block for me to cross ref? thanks
Hi I have an urgent question. I want to remove egr system but one said to me if u do that u need to do a dpf delete aswell bc it will be under more pressure without egr but I dont want black smoke coming out my car . And my intake manifold is starting look like its melting from hot gases idk whats the problem every mechanic has different fixes.
My 320d doesn't seem to have had a timing chain replacement, but I'll be getting something replaced soon, so would the mechanic be able to tell whether there's an upcoming problem with the timing chain or is it random? It's at 133,000 miles already, so would a timing chain replacement be recommended, or is it not needed unless any physical damage is visible/noticeable?
@@GeorgeAusters Thanks. I'll see whether I can confirm when/if it was last replaced because the car so far (from 2011) has been looked after quite well.
@@skrivelis4315 I haven't changed it (yet?) as I've just been taking the risk of assuming that it's fine. There have been no signs at all of problems, either. I believe that it's at around 145,000 miles / 233,000 km now.

Hi, Any idea where i can get a intercooler hose from for this engine? I have the same engine and the turbo air intake pipe has a leak where the connector is. Any idea on where to purchase or price would be great thanks.
Hi George, have you ever had problems with the turbo actuator? Mine keeps going into limp mode at certain revs, can hear the turbo flutter on acceleration then reduced power comes up on dash but no EML or code! (I have scanned with INPA & ISTA D) and will boost normally upto 3k and then its like the ecu cuts all power and becomes "gutless" I'm also low on boost but turbo is good and has acceptable movement on the turbine. When I bought the car it had no boost at all (actuator linkage was loose, tightened and was perfect afterwards) but have checked that again and it's fine. Any ideas how to check correct operation of the actuator seeing as it's electronic? When I unlock the car or open the bonnet you can hear the actuator "ticking" like it's trying to "initialise" it. Car does boost, although like I say not as well as it used to. 2007 520d LCI N47 with 230k miles with chain replaced around 1k ago, flywheel and clutch replaced, swirl flaps removed and blanked.
@@GeorgeAusters yes that's correct, they were removed due to parts from it being ingested and took out a couple of valves (so don't believe that the swirl flap problem was resolved on these engines) which resulted in the almost complete rebuild of the engine. What about the Turbo Actuator? Apparently that is also now quite a common failiure item, just wondering if you have any advice on testing that?
Out of interest, at what point do these become common? I’m looking at a 2013 320d with 40K miles... are they’re any of these problems I should concerned about?
@@GeorgeAusters oil change was just done. Dpf should be fine, no light for it on. Computer said it was fine and regenerating a few weeks ago. I will try to get the turbo out tomorrow and have a look what is the problem. But I can just say that atleast my n47d is a piece of shit car and engine

Thanks Austin!
M47 are usually pretty good for timing chains as long as you change the oil regularly👍🏻
If you hear rattling when you're sat in the car, go directly to your garage. My chain failed and the engine rebuild cost me circa £2000. Had I had the work done before hand it would have cost half as much. The car has been great ever since.
@@GeorgeAusters it's not while am in the car its only when revs over 1500 rpm and sometimes it can not even happen

Hi George, 320d e90 177cv N47D20A, DPF & EGR off, Downpipe.
Faut-il supprimer EGR ?
My car (2007 e90 320d 163hp) is on 167k never had the timing chain replaced, the egr is still on, I’m planning to do an egr delete but I’m worried that it may cause problems in the long run, i service the car every 8k-10k with Castrol edge oil, how ever as of lately I’ve noticed a lack of power and throttle response, any tips of what i can do to resolve this would be much appreciated
where did you buy your EGR block plates / EGR delete kit from? and who tuned your car to then remove the EGR system from the software to have your car running normal? thanks
Watch my EGR delete video👍🏻
Excellent information! I read somewhere that by removing the EGR it can be detrimental to the DPF, have you had anything happen regarding this?
Apparently removing the EGR can make the DPF clog faster as all the exhaust gases will be going through the exhaust not through the intake. However logically this doesn’t make sense because the DPF will regenerate and clear the soot as long as the engine gets up to temp regardless of whether the EGR is in place or not👍🏻
Easy solution is to remove them both😊
@@GeorgeAusters Definitely makes sense, much rather clog the DPF and burn it off than clog parts of the engine! Cheers for the reply 😁
Michael Thomas Of course mate. Thanks for watching!
@@GeorgeAusters Should I remove both the DPF and the EGR?

Hi, maybe someone has idea why my injectors clamps (holders) snaps (cracks). Got changed all 4 about month ago and again one of them snapped. What can cost this problem? Screwing bolt too hard ??? Or if it been chipped (I'm not sure, last owner said it has chip) so injectors makes too much pressure and cost this problem??? Have no idea, would like to hear your thoughts. Hello George,
I own a 320d Touring X Drive from 2013. The car was been serviced quite regurarly, 14000 Kms give or take for oil changes. The car has 117000kms. Would you change the timing chain if you were in my place? Do the latest N47s have any difference so are less prone to failure. Sorry for the long post.
Nicolas
They're prone to break if you don't regularly do normal service (oil and shit)
grant content but not all applies to newer b47/57
Hey man! Just a quick question. Does EGR delete contribute to MOT failure due to high emissions etc? Have you ever had a problem with emissions on MOT after egr delete...thanks in advance
You should have no problems passing an MOT with EGR removed 👍🏻
Oil Filter Housing leak also common…
sorry for my bad English. The N47D20C have a "revised timing chain" as you say. what dos that mean ?
Hello. I have the same problem. Did you find what the problem was? Thx
@@aerosert1992 sorry still have the issue, just living with it by making sure blower is always on more than 3 bars. 2 mechanics couldn’t find an issue, no leaks around engine.
Not 100% correct, but good to highlight some of the issues with the n47. Personally I wouldn't buy a 2nd (3rd 4th etc etc) hand n47.
Thanks Rich!
Hi George, how do you clean the injectors of this car?
Common problems timming chain guides made of plastic and hydraulic tensioner teeth where very badand don't hold tensioner no more even with good oil pressure it's just fails and guides break up and do damage to rocker cover break cracks cover and chain flops about making all sorts of noise ,, 1500 fitted any BMW
Tensioner teeth?
Very good videos George. I brought a 2010 318d msport with 75k on the clock about a month ago. Now been told the timing chain needs changing. Don't suppose you fancy doing mine as well do you 😂. Just joking. Would you recommend doing the clutch and flywheel at the same time?
I would love to do other cars if I had the space etc. If you're planning on keeping the car a while then yes I would do the clutch and flywheel
N47D20C did bmw fix the timing chain and you don't need to worry ? That much or just replace it with new timing chain kit

@@GeorgeAusters thanks for replying I just got the car like 1 month ago didn't know much about BMWs as this is my first it has 150k miles on the clock is it more likely the chain was changed but don't know for sure as there's little history about the car.

Do you know if the actuators can be adjusted? Ive fittrd a new turbo and now no power boost until 2500- 3000rpm
They’re electronically controlled👍🏻
My 320d doesn't seem to have had a timing chain replacement, but I'll be getting something replaced soon, so would the mechanic be able to tell whether there's an upcoming problem with the timing chain or is it random? It's at 133,000 miles already, so would a timing chain replacement be recommended, or is it not needed unless any physical damage is visible/noticeable?
I’d recommend doing it for peace of mind and doing the other jobs while in there

Hi George, have you ever had problems with the turbo actuator? Mine keeps going into limp mode at certain revs, can hear the turbo flutter on acceleration then reduced power comes up on dash but no EML or code! (I have scanned with INPA & ISTA D) and will boost normally upto 3k and then its like the ecu cuts all power and becomes "gutless"
I'm also low on boost but turbo is good and has acceptable movement on the turbine.
Removing the swirl flaps will mean you have no power below 2000rpm
@@GeorgeAusters yes that's correct, they were removed due to parts from it being ingested and took out a couple of valves (so don't believe that the swirl flap problem was resolved on these engines) which resulted in the almost complete rebuild of the engine.
What about the Turbo Actuator? Apparently that is also now quite a common failiure item, just wondering if you have any advice on testing that?
Sometimes when i start the engine at idle the rpms are fluctuating but this happens if i don’t strart the car for couple days 🤔
Out of interest, at what point do these become common? I’m looking at a 2013 320d with 40K miles... are they’re any of these problems I should concerned about?
