Did n47 chains a while back and after 5 weeks the oil pump quit and engine was scrap. I now always change the oil pump aswell when im that far into it, easier to convince a customer to spend the money for a genuine oil pump while its apart than to convince them it was not your fault that their car quit after spending so much money🙈
Probably not the cause here but I've had 2 dead engine jobs over the last couple of years following timing chain replacements from other garages and they'd fitted the oil pump sprocket backwards. The Vaslov channel on RUclips has exactly the same issue in one of his videos. This causes the pump gear to eat into the casing and then the pump fails. BMW have written "Front" on the sprocket but it means front as in towards you when fitting, not front of the car/engine.
Nice little motor, I feel like I've been shafted, I've got the e82Lci and it has a stage 1 map, nothing else, no dyno but was immediately assured it will be between 180/190 after seeing this there no chance it's running more than 170, solenoid injectors 😢
Currently replacing the original chain after 250dkm, still in great condition. Guessing that frequent oil changes made this possible. Block is on 220hp and 440nm.
Fairly easy with it being manual. Just aslong as the splines are lined up, should be a fairly straight forward fit. Autos are a bit harder, having to line up the torque convertor
A few months ago I bought a 2017 Toyota RAV4, and to my surprise, it is fitted with… you guessed it by now, a BMW N47 engine….. I hope these problems were sorted before my car was built, but I’m still gutted…………..
100k miles is the life, or when it rattles or just, ya know, snaps, as they do... Tensioner is actually a good first step to change tbh, cos their are beamers on the road with 250k on the first chain so. Also little edit, from timing chain anxiety disorder research 😂 manuals, start stop, the 20k oil intervals BMW recommended, are all the biggest players In a failing chain. But ultimately, some still just... Snap!
BMW never used to have any set mileage for when a chain needs to be changed only if they start to rattle. My local BMW garage in Yeovil had never changed a chain to date back in 2008
My previous 318d with the n47 snapped at 110.000 km my new f31 with the n47n is do oil change every 10.000 km now and it has 118.000 km and so far so good . Just don’t do the 30.000 km oil changes bmw recommend its asking for a timing chain faillure !
My n47t / f10 has 300k and never changed anything except usual service ofc. I asked bmw dealership for a chain change, they said that I shouldn’t bother changing if it doesn’t rattle. Now how the heck would I know when it’ll start rattling 😅
Was wondering about whether to take the gearbox out vs engine, what are the pros and cons of each way? (mine's a manual 2010 330d btw). What made you guys decide to choose engine out method on this N47 1 series?

Chain never ever fails. Even bmw said timing chain has lifetime warranty. It’s the tensioner fails because of wrong oils, long service etc. i had super band noise from my engine rattling on start then it would stop once started every one said you will have to change both chains. I got £60 tensioner, 20 minutes and noise went like never existed and engine sounded like 10k , it’s just a workshops rips off to make money even i know few workshops dont even change they charge customers but only do tensioners and noise disappears , it makes sense if it’s snapped or if theirs guide damage debris in oil or oil filter, which can also be checked by putting camera through tensioner hole i have done it before you can clearly see everything
Plenty of items are "for life" but it doesn't mean the they should be left without servicing. Chains do stretch, for the majority of people it makes sense to do everything correctly while the engine is out.

Some people do it without fully removing, but this way you can be more thorough and saves struggling.
