    I am about to use your advice and change the chain tensioner on my X5. Although the car runs nice, I will do it as a preventative measure.
    Please, don't forget to let us know, when you will start taking clients, at least from your subscribers, so I can bring my x5 for timing chain and bearings replacement. 🙂

    Great video, many thanks. I'm having the upper chain replaced as routine maintenance on my 1 series diesel M Sport 2012 convertible next Friday. I know the 2007-2009 were the problem ones but I want to make sure I don't have the problem. I've owned my car for many years and have had the oil and filters changed every 13k miles so not 18k miles as BMW say is the interval. The cost of an engine out 3 chain replacement is 2k which I can't afford so I hope the £450 cost of the upper timing chain replacement will allow my car to run for at least another 100k miles. It's covered 140k miles in my hands

      It’s interesting to hear about this approach being used on a BMW N47 engine. Are they planning to split a link in the old chain and use it to guide the new one in? That method is quite common on Mercedes OM651 engines, but I’ve never heard of it being used on the N47. The concern with this method is that the plastic guides also wear out and should ideally be replaced alongside the chain to avoid future issues.
      With respect, I’d recommend getting a second opinion. Also there are many shops charging around £850-£1000 to do the full job It could be a better long-term solution and may save you from potential issues down the line. Just do some research for pricing.
      All the best!

    Hi, just subscribed. Good video. No BS...straight to the point. However at about minute 15 (although the sound is not perfect) you can clearly hear an unbalance in the cilinder compression. Might just be a cilinder fuel wash, but it doesn't sound right. The simplest way is to do a relative compression test - but you do need a scope... check the videos on YT. If the car behaves ok...just leave it be, especially if you want to sell it. Otherwise... for the future jobs invest in a scope. There are many alternatives (cheap ones). Cheers!

      @W15Garage  4 месяца назад +1

      @@alexdragomirescu5084 Thanks for watching, appreciate it. Indeed the sound is rubbish, the external microphone kicks in from the distance and distorts the sound, also the intake was disconnected after the intercooler to avoid surprises(water in the cooler) that sound is not relevant. I’ve recorded a few start ups at the end of the video with better quality. Next week I’m planning to do a compression test(I only have the old fashioned tool), just out of curiosity, but the car drives good. Cold starts are spot on, fuel economy is good, acceleration as well. Thanks for the tip, I will be sure to look into it.

      @@W15Garage no problem with the sound if you know what to listen to 😉. Taking the old school compression test is a proven test and it works. However...on diesels it's a pain to do it just for getting numbers. It's a good way to do it if you want to put air pressure in the cilinder afterwards to find where the leak is, but then again...4 cilinders...6....8... a lot of work...and we don't like working uselessly do we? 🙂 putting an amp clamp on the battery, connecting a scope, disable the injection and getting the difference in compression is a matter of 10-15 minutes. You'll see the procedure in the videos. If you decide to go for a scope I would recommend go for at least 2ch. In this case you can do the test with 1ch only, no problem. But having 2ch (in this case) you can also synchronize the second channel to one of the injectors. In this way let's say you synchronize with cilinder no.1 and you get the pressure humps from the engine, knowing the firing order 1342 and knowing which hump is no.1 you can easily individuate the problem cylinder(s) if you notice differences. Knowing which cylinder is faulty you can proceed to get the injector out and do the pressure leak test. BUT you have reduced your diagnostic time to about 90%! Anyway go and do some videos searching. Pictures and videos are much more explicit than words (at least for me) 👍

    @ski69 4 месяца назад +1

    Nope....there's still an issue with that engine...I have that same motor and #1 it doesn't shake at all at idle and #2, this engine is interference engine. It means, that if the engine is out of time by possibly 1-2 teeth, the pistons will hit the valves...no ifs or buts about it. The valves are bend. I can't believe you didn't bore scope/inspect the cylinders or maybe you didn't want to find the truth? All that work for nothing or maybe for couple likes on your video. This is NOT the proper way of fixing an engine after catastrophic failure of the timing chain. Come on, you've removed a modern engine out of a BMW and installed it back in, so you're not an idiot, but you've shorted yourself and your viewers....

    • @W15Garage
      @W15Garage  4 месяца назад +3

      @@ski69 Thanks for watching. Maybe I’m just an idiot😊 whose car is running spot on, if it wouldn’t it would take me 2-3 hours to remove the cylinder head, replace it, and that’s it. Also if the engine fails completely, I have a spare engine prepared, but I highly doubt it will be the case.
      But you should know that the engine doesn’t vibrate like that in real life, it’s called the rolling shutter effect, google it.
      Appreciate your honesty though! Have a good day!
