It looked ugly that’s for sure, I talked to the guy who sold the car to me, due to his job he used to sleep in the car occasionally and left the engine idle for hours…I think that has to do with the sludge buildup. All 16 valves touched the pistons, as was mentioned in the video, I’ve used a different cylinder head, this one is still at the machine shop being fixed.
Unfortunately it’s marketing…post 2007 bmw mercedes audi Vauxhall Fiat etc adapted this ugly strategy to make more money on parts. For some reason bmw has this bad reputation about timing chains, but other manufacturers suffer from this problem as well. Example mercedes om651 engine, Vauxhall mokka 1.6 engine, fiat panda 1.3 multijet, some audi v6 engines.

Where are you based and what do you charge (labour only) to do an N47 timing chain engine is still running so no head off job. Will supply all parts including new clutch and DMF.
Yes, they all snap eventually if left unchanged. Oil change intervals can make a difference; I’ve seen high-mileage N47s, but they won’t last forever. Even if the chain would, the plastic chain guides will break.
Cylinder head still at the machine shop, will find out next week, check out my short video about the damage on the valve, I ve done a home made valve test
If the last fool happened to remove the head, then re-used the old bolts when refitting, it starts getting to be a lot more "fun" as they'll be so tight & tatty-headed, you'll struggle to get the bolts out. I mean really struggle.
It’s repairable, cylinder head needs to be removed, damaged valves replaced. Camshafts and carrier may need replacement, but every case is different, you may have only bent valves. Don’t scrap the engine.

I bought a brand new Citroen c4 spacetourer full extras and the timing belt snapped 2 and a half years later . With only 87000km on the clock . After arguing with the manufacturer for months I got a new engine under warranty. I sold it ( got rid of it ) 2 months later and I just bought a BMW 525d with the N47 engine. If properly maintained there is no issues and the timing chain gives you a warning tick tick on cold start so you know when to change it .
i do not believe for a second that this car was doing 70MPH with the engine under considerable load when the chain snapped.. it is an interference engine anw with the RPM it would have been at the engine would have continued to rotate and be out of time and therfore smash the valves...

You can change it without removing the engine?
@@Shades11353 yes! Specially on manual cars it’s easy. I ve done it many times before my garage was available
@@W15Garage Thanks a lot
Great video I shall now start on the rest, new subscriber
Many thanks! Appreciate it! Hope you enjoy😊
Nice one my mate 😊
Thanks for watching!!
what i don't understand is why do BMWs have this issue of timing chains? is it their design compared to VW/Mercedes?
Unfortunately it’s marketing…post 2007 bmw mercedes audi Vauxhall Fiat etc adapted this ugly strategy to make more money on parts. For some reason bmw has this bad reputation about timing chains, but other manufacturers suffer from this problem as well. Example mercedes om651 engine, Vauxhall mokka 1.6 engine, fiat panda 1.3 multijet, some audi v6 engines.
@@W15Garage like you said bad maintenance (oil changes) etc do not help. People try save money and not service. Maybe you can do video on these problems that its NOT just bmws its other cars too
@@mstar011 yes, I’ve seen loose/rattling timing chain at 97.000miles, when my x3 2.0d ORIGINAL chain at 156.000miles was still silent. This is proof that the oil interval recommended by BMW is not right! I personally change my oil at 7000miles ish, and always warm up the engine before I start pushing it harder.
Was it not worth changing the clutch .
The Clutch was is good condition, also it’s a relatively easy and quick job on bmw.
I have a 2015 x3 n47 just stopped on the highway… is it possible to snap a camshaft,, sprocket
or is it 100% timing chain. I have a camshaft code
@@benp8310 Most likely timing chain failure. There is one camshaft sprocket, if that would fail it’s a timing chain failure anyway.
Nice job done ✅

Where are you based and what do you charge (labour only) to do an N47 timing chain engine is still running so no head off job. Will supply all parts including new clutch and DMF.
Hi, thanks for your message! As I’m only a hobbyist I’m not currently set up to take on any clients just yet unfortunately
@@W15Garage OK. Which brand of locking tools did you use? I hear some are not a tight fit around the cams.
good job, good content
Many thanks!!!
I wonder would you replace my 316d timing chain?😆
Did pistons and valve guides escape damage?
Yes, only valves got damaged
Obviously they snap on the N47’s . i own a F30 , any rough ideas of how many actually have snapped ? loke are they all due to blow?
Yes, they all snap eventually if left unchanged. Oil change intervals can make a difference; I’ve seen high-mileage N47s, but they won’t last forever. Even if the chain would, the plastic chain guides will break.
Gratulalok 👍🏻👍🏻🥰
Koszi koszi!
Where did you take the cylinder head to wch engineer company??
@@manexkay2431 complete car care, Ivatt way
How many valves were damaged? I was under the impression that the valves usually didn't get damaged on these engines
@@jamesward5721 Thanks God it was on original bolts this one. I always use Victor Reinz head bolts. No issues so far.
great video

What make of timing kits are you using?
FAI is working fine for me so far
My timing chain snapped at about 10-15 mph it’s a 2.0 engine
Does anyone know if it will be repairable or should I scrap it ?
It’s repairable, cylinder head needs to be removed, damaged valves replaced. Camshafts and carrier may need replacement, but every case is different, you may have only bent valves. Don’t scrap the engine.
@@W15Garage thanks for the reply 👍iv spoke to about 5 different garages, eventually one of them said they specialise in fixing broken engines he’s confident he can fix it so fingers crossed 🤞
Hi where are you based?
Hello mate where I can find your cars for sale ? Can you leave me a link to it. Thank you.
Hi, I have nothing to sell at the moment, I’m enjoying this 116d for a while now
Looks easy, garages wanna remove the engine
@@Shades11353 many people prefer removing the engine, and leave the gearbox on the car
The old myth about timing chains being more reliable than cambelts has been debunked!
My chain is on 400k
Thanks for watching! Since 2005 timing chains are not the same
I bought a brand new Citroen c4 spacetourer full extras and the timing belt snapped 2 and a half years later . With only 87000km on the clock . After arguing with the manufacturer for months I got a new engine under warranty. I sold it ( got rid of it ) 2 months later and I just bought a BMW 525d with the N47 engine. If properly maintained there is no issues and the timing chain gives you a warning tick tick on cold start so you know when to change it .
how many km the cars has?
152000 miles
@@W15Garage at that mileage with that poor maintenance i think the engine lasted pretty good 😂😂

please do mine I can leave my car for two weeks so you have plenty time and I'm happy to pay a reasonable price for your work. Thanks.
no one changed the oil in this engine, it was terribly dirty
@@damiangrabowski2104 it was a neglected car for sure
i do not believe for a second that this car was doing 70MPH with the engine under considerable load when the chain snapped.. it is an interference engine anw with the RPM it would have been at the engine would have continued to rotate and be out of time and therfore smash the valves...
All 16 valves made contact with the pistons, if you watched the video I’ve mentioned specifically that a different cylinder head was reinstalled!
Вот это сюжет в БМВ масло от Мерседеса.Нарушение корпоративной этики😂😂😂

People are saying terrible things about this engine
@@Shades11353 this engines are brilliant if maintained properly. Great fuel economy, and power BUT, oil oil oil. Oil services in time. Long oil change intervals destroy this engines. Timing chain needs to be done before they snap, but otherwise good engines.
