- Looks like I'm jumping on this bandwagon, although I've had this topic on my mind for quite some time now; this is my chance to finally cover it.
One of the most central aspects of the Dead Rising series (Or at least should be) has been the time limit. It keeps your on your toes and makes every hour special in its own way.
Dead Rising 2: Off The Record features a cheat mode, with one of its power being the ability to speed up the in-game clock by 2 or even 4 times than normal.
Today I aim to find out if it's possible to beat the game (as in reach Ending S) with this in effect, starting from the beginning of the story.

By the way, I highly doubt this would be possible in Dead Rising 1. The case where you have to rescue Carlito and fight Larry is tight enough as it is.

Thing is,his uppercut can reduce your health to half a block,and that's factoring in the zombies,his other melee attacks,his gun which takes a entire block of health per hit,the bombardment from the phenotrans plane,and the fact Sullivan has the most health in the original dead rising 2,even more than TK,the boss of overtime mode.
For a player going through this game blind,fighting Sullivan is hell, especially since he disarms all melee weapons,with the exceptions of the tenderizers and the Knife Gloves.
And the thing is, his voice actor voiced Scratch from that one Sonic Cartoon, I'm sure you know the one.
Moral of this is
YOU FORGOT THE DAMN SKATEBOARDS FRANK

BTW, I actually like the blend of the subtitles AND the voice together.
And this whole challenge should be speedrun material.
If cheats were not forbidden (though I can see someone maybe making an excuse with this cheat in mind as a separate catagory)

I'm going to be honest, that may have been the most intense video I've seen from Git in a while. That was GREAT.

For the record, no, level up bonuses are not consistent. While you can never get shortchanged and be weaker at Level 50 than someone else at Level 50, the way the games work is that they effectively have a deck of 49 level up cards, and a hand based on your current level. You can get a card from the hand when you level up, but cards in the deck will only go to the hand at certain levels, I.E. if you level up and get just a combo card, you can reload the save (well not so much in this challenge...) and get that same level, but you might get a stat increase instead.
Don't know if that explains it. Point to be is that while you'll always get everything by the end, the order is inconsistent and the stat gains are rigged such that you can't save scum and have maxed out Speed at Level 4 or something like that.
Also Brandon does that specifically in retaliation to being shot. And you probably could've gotten Gordon.

I loathe the save the safehouse mission in OTR. It's real easy to miss the Survivors being invincible like in DR2.
Wilted Flower (probably not escorting Rebecca, given the Gas Zombies) could be made easier if you grab Leadership in advance, that way you don't have to carry what's-her-face. You could also just ditch her outright once the shortcut is open if you must, or have her tag along while you finish Run For The Money. I don't think it'd be time effective to get her, do Run For the Money, then open the shortcut because the shortcut is in the same plaza anyway.
Also, fun fact about the end of Overtime. You can completely break the zombie segment with the Zombie Walk since it's solely time based rather than kill based or something like that. If you get the Zombie Walk going as the fences come down, you can literally just stand there and do absolutely nothing until the cutscene kicks in.
Also the PC port is stupid and broken.
This video inspired me to give this a try on Off The Record. I did my run at a level 1 character. It is REALLY hard. Instead of loading up on skateboards, I grabbed the skateboard magazine right out of the gate when you need to get the first zombrex. (It’s in a toy shop in the Palisades Mall) It triples the health of skateboards and you basically carry 3 for 2 inventory slots, 1 skateboard and the magazine. The money issue wasn’t also hard because I got about 4-5 safety deposit keys and cashed them in when I went to fight Brandon at the Uranus Zone. (including the 2 zombrex keys). I also got the 3 free zombrexes in the world and from Carl the Postman. To get the other odd 600k I broke money cases during when you need to destroy the casino drills (they give upper 5 number to upper 6 number figures like 75k and 175k) and the rest I made money hackers and hacked ATMs. They give 20k each and they’re often put next to each other so that’s 40k. I did this when I had downtime between the earlier cases instead of when you stayed in the safe house. Oddly enough the best relax time you have for this type of run is when you need the 1 million. I had the 1 million before I had found out Rebecca was being held for ransom so I used the time to level Frank up by killing the snipers and Carl the mailman to hopefully get my levels up for extra inventory and HP. I also used this time to get the sports fan outfit so I can binge on alcohol and run faster the few times I didn’t have a skateboard. The harvesters weren’t horrible because of the BFG you told us about. They go through bad guys and you can shoot the mercenaries to clear them off the harvesters with only 1 BFG. I failed when I needed to physically attack Stacy 1 more time on her robot because the damn rockets wouldn’t recharge fast enough. It was really disappointing. Another 30 seconds of real time and I would’ve had her. Her second life bar is the biggest bitch of the fight, because I think it’s a bit random, when I fought her at the second bar she had a tendency to throw crates at me more than slamming her claws on me. Very annoying. Really sucked because I knew if I beat Stacy I would’ve have overtime done because I’d have nothing but the skateboard magazine and skateboards. (Keep in mind if you’re lucky you’ll have 6-7 inventory slots while doing this run and 5-7 health squares) When I Inevitably try this run again, I will not mess up on what I did like forgetting to give TK zombrex immediately, that probably bit me on the butt for wasting time. For the psychopaths, pain killer is a requirement on low levels. Brandon just needs a spiked bat and pain killers, but the rest need a light saber and painkillers. I brought 2 if I could, like to Boykins fight. Also skateboarding is a lifesaver when the gas zombies show up because they can’t hiccup you because you’re on the board. So yeah this was really fun and challenging, and this kind of run CAN BE done at level 1, but you need to know Dead Rising 2: Off The Record down pat. Weapon locations, combo cards, ways to get money, magazine locations, absolute time efficiency, and everything else you described. This video was fun to watch and I hope you make more awesome videos like this. I’ll comment again if I successfully beat OTR on level 1 at 4x speed.

@@kurtmatteson4914 Yes, this is me on a new account, lost access to the new one. I did give it a 2nd try and I did beat everything, you had to follow how I played to a T. I messed up after killing Stacy and not following a perfect run to grab TK's items, I ran out of time before I even got back to the arena. So yes this is entirely possible with a level 1 character, however you need to know Off The Record like the back of your damn hand, any little mistakes will cost you. Even then, you could get screwed with leveling, because leveling randomizes what you get, some levels will give you new moves and that's it, while others will increase your speed or item base. But I did beat Off The Record at a level 1 character with a 4x speed! Very hard, but possible!

•if you broke your leg, grab a mix of beer & wine and you should be fine

maybe a new game plus feature with configurable modifiers to make it more interesting
this is why i think otr is the best game in the series.

@@chronostc4850 i know. and it's unique to otr. which is a shame, as it could have really been expanded upon for dr3 and 4. would give people like me who hated exploring under the gun of a timer a lot more to work with once i beat the game while keeping traditionalists happy.
otrs sin is having the sandbox mode unlocked from the start. should have been a bonus for getting ending s. with configurations to make it spicy for those who want a challenge. infinity mode had the right idea, but that had a timer of its own. i was thinking: take otrs sandbox mode, sprinkle modifiers on the map that, once found, can be applied every time you load that save file. such as: stronger/weaker zombies, rescuable survivors, replace zombies with something goofy, remove zombies and psychopaths completely (you are the omega man) have health drain constantly, remove food from the map, make items unbreakable or break easier, etc.
otrs sandbox has a lot of potential for expanding that will likely never be realized now that cv went under.
it's a shame, as i feel the sandbox is the best thing dead rising ever produced, a mode seperate from the story if you just wanna unwind and, in franks words, take a vacation.
@@supersmashbro596 That would be a great upgrade for a new game. I think there could be a lot of fun with a level editor too. Simple as taking existing locations but being able to arrange items, survivors, modifiers etc. It'd be cool to create scenarios like you're trapped in a store and have to make due to clear a way out, except zombies are extra tough (most people can't wack a human body over in one hit)/one bite equals death.
I honestly like this new method you went for in this video. The Subtitles/Voiceover works quite well in keeping up with what's going on.

In case anyone is wondering it is possible to get the 1 million in the time limit on a new character. With tight planning and luck. I finished the part at level 7, with about 3 minutes left. Basically you need to route it so you pick up the keys that have money in the boxes, get at least 2 of the gambling books, and make sure that you stick with sure bets. I used the small machines that I knew would give me 9k a win and rotated on those to finish what I needed. Took two tries, wasn't happy about having to start over, but then again I wasn't happy about having to escort that bitch doctor around the entire game either.

not sure if speedrunning dead rising would be a good idea. the best you could do is never pause the game, since you will need to wait for time to run out anyway. speedruns of overtime mode do happen though
You're my god at gaming, and the only person I can watch 43 minutes, or even an hour long video. I'm not even english, I'm not even that good at English, and even if I prefer videos when you don't speak (sorry) you sound like a cold teacher that has been doing his job for 37 years, but still gets a bit of emotion explaining his work for the curious students.

Also, you could have avoided the if you die you start over by calculating the amount of time you have to complete each case on 4 times speed, and if you dont do it in that amount of time, you go back to a earlier save.
By using the 4x clock speed multiplier, it disables your ability to save and load checkpoints.

They were actually HEAVILY nerfed in OTR. Instead of stealing ALL your items and dumping you in the nearest bathroom, they'll only steal one item and run off with it, leaving you where you are. Also, fun fact, you can turn the tables on them by spraying them with spray paint, then interacting with them bare handed to yoink a little extra cash out of their pockets.
Spitball gun on the helicopter blades? I never knew that, I always just tossed the crates. You learn something new everyday.

Probably should have started with that one, and escalated to 4x later, but otherwise great video.
there would also be enough time to do extra missions, but the ones that make gameplay easier should have top priority, like the shortcut, survivors that give zombrex, and psychos that reward weapons (seymour goes down no problem since he for some reason starts at melee range despite being best at long range, and his gun is pretty good. now the question is if the cases actually take you to the south plaza during the time he is around, or if you have to go out of your way to hunt him down)

The stun baton in one of the casinos being drilled kills the gun goons instantly (same with looters?) Also, if you had ANY firefighter armor piece on, carrying/leaning on a survivor increases your speed to insane levels, making it so keeping a crippled survivor with you (and outside safe rooms) a valid tactic

0:29 Dead Rising 1 had a Wii port titled "Chop till you drop" which also removed the time limit (Probably due to the limitations of the Wii which made it play like Resident Evil 4) and it made every survivor mandatory for completion but all survivor missions use a timer to determine your rank. Meaning the constant race against the clock is still there but with no pressure of a worse ending it just isn't the same at all.
(Also the Wii version made it so you can't give survivors weapons or friendly fire them in case you're wondering. If it makes it any easier or harder to escort is debatable.)

When you were at the food court at 19:57, you should've grabbed the magazine from the pizza parlor. It probably would have helped more than the mixed drinks magazine since it works on all foods and drinks.

If you play in the remastered version for X1 or PS4, the cheats aren't available, only for X360 and PS3 and you have to buy it there
Nice video challenge. I kinda wish to try this out with a friend from scratch too.
I don't think the Super BFG works well on human type enemies, at least bosses... but, the other things you can turn the blast gun into might be more effective, all you need is a cattle prod after getting the gun. If that creation runs low you could use it one more time for an explosive laser gun with the light saber.
Less effective at crowd clearing though sadly, and I'm not sure if the materials are easily obtainable with the time restraints.
Also I think the Skateboard magazine on the way to the underground train might be worth mentioning too, for the sake of skateboard durability. As well as the ability to jump as well, if you're willing to sacrafice the item slot for it..
The super bfg does insane damage on both zombies and humans with it.

Even thought I'm not insane enough to do THIS, it's still incredibly useful. On my very first playthrough of OtR, I lost the game because I pissed away too much time and in the Case 7-4, the final cutscene for it took too long, and I failed the story in the middle of it. I don't know what happens since I rage quit.
when i did a second run of this game I just grabed a few sniper rifes from the high noon shooting range in the palisades mall but you
may not have had that time.

I know this is a month old now but I didn’t watch just cause I saw it was over 30 minutes and I never watched a video where you talked, pretty good video.
When I played the game when I was younger I couldn't help but fuck around finding weapons but then I got stuck because I finally ran out of time i was in the middle of a boss battle and then before I know it I'm outside the door of the boss battle and this cycle repeats for a good month before I realized there was a time limit but being stubborn I never restarted the save file because I thought I was too far in the game to just restart, I hate when my brothers delete my files and how many times I've RESTARTED a game so I never did
The alt attack with the pitchfork shotgun is amazing at dealing with regular humans, psychopaths, and really anything that isn't a generic zombie enemy like the harvesters. Infinite durability too, if I remember right.
Since you can't lift up and instakill humans/objects, the game instead resorts to your poking dealing a huge chunk of damage. And since guns run off ammo for their durability, it goes on pretty much forever....unless they patched it.

I’ve actually failed the overrun safe room case, I ran out of time and the game won’t let you continue afterwards. The truth vanishes (black screen), you can’t even continue the rest of the game. It forces you to load a checkpoint or restart the whole story.

I think the worst change in DR4 is the multiplayer...
It's very odd - I only played the first Dead Rising for a few hours when I was about 15, it just didn't land with me at the time. It may well now. But aye - I really enjoyed the video, something really interesting about it hah
I did have an extra tip I could throw in, but if I remember correctly, it's reliant on DLC, which not everyone will have.
