- Donkey Kong Country is a classic SNES classic that is beloved by just about everyone, and it continues to delight players across the globe just as much today as it did back in 1994.This is the game that truly put Rare on the map.
However, have you ever realized how many enemies you'd typically hurt during a single playthrough? Just because they decided to join K. Rool and steal some bananas, it doesn't mean these poor animals deserve to be killed.
That's why today, I aim to find out if it's possible to complete the game without hurting a single enemy and what you'll need to do to achieve such a feat. Prepare for thrills, spills, but no kills as we take a trek through DK Island in the most saintly of ways in this pacifist run...

Pacifism just means you cant kill anything. You can beat someone up to the brink of death, and along as they live you fine

I’m so glad you made this video! I attempted this myself a few months back and thought that Tree Top Town and Blackout Basement were impossible, but you proved me wrong.
You CAN avoid the four minecart kremlings in Mine Cart Madness, but only in early releases of the game (specifically, version 1.0/1.1 of the American release; not sure about other regions). In those versions, if you get hit in a minecart, you can jump infinitely by pressing Y and B. With this, you can avoid all the enemies in the stage. However, I’m at a loss as to how you get past that Necky in Vulture Culture.
I toiled over Platform Perils for a long time. I eventually decided to use restore points (I played the SNES classic version) just to see if it was theoretically possible. I didn’t know that you could make the grey Krushas fall by jumping on the platforms right when they reach the edge. Instead, I used DK’s hand-slap move to stun the Krushas for JUST long enough to allow me to jump to the next platform. You can skip a lot of the Krushas by roll-jumping to the stationary platforms with barrels on them, but getting that hand-slap off is very tough; your position and timing can’t be anything less than perfect. I’d like to record a pacifist run of Platform Perils someday, so I’m glad you found a more consistent strategy for getting past the Krushas.
I’ve been a fan of your videos for the past 11-ish years, so it’s really cool to see you make something like this. I’m a big fan of “challenge” videos, and I wish more of them existed for DKC.
It works on US 1.0 and 1.1 as you said, as well as both PAL versions but not the Japanese versions. However, the glitch stops working when you approach the first platform after the two bees. You could however keep jumping upwards to get enough height so that you can just fall from the top until the end of the level. You'll have to jump for a very long time though, but doable.
The only way to avoid the enemy in Vulture Culture is to warp past the level to skip it completely. A glitch can also be done at the start of Platform Perils which will finish the level instantly. But yes, it's also possible to avoid the enemies with precise platforming.
This challenge in general would be easier on the JP versions, because it actually has less enemies in it, among lots of other changes to make it easier.
If you want another challenge: Try to beat the game without using Y. Minimum is 5 presses, all used to be able to grab the barrel during the Queen B fight.

Imagine if there was a pacifist mod for this game; where if you’ve done enough pacifist levels, enemy placements are fewer, some enemies are allies that help you, and mandatory enemy deaths are removed. Also with the drum boss, the spawned enemies could actually turn on the drum to give you an easy win.
That reminds me of Iji, which actually does have some of the enemies treat you differently if you play as a pacifist, despite the game never really urging you onto that path. You can establish a temporary truce on one level and casually stroll past most of the enemies, and a couple of them will actually turn on their bosses so that their blood isn't on your hands.
Ya know before I saw that Dinomite was narrating, I thought something was really wrong with Git's voice. Like whoa man Git sounds really deep all of a sudden.

Nice video, as soon as I saw the title I though of Plataform perils. I don't know if it counts but there's a glitch in minecarts madness that allows you to progress without the minecart, instead Donkey Kong will have infinite jumps but you will lose this ability if you touch a minecart. In other words, the level would become a space shooter from left to right where you need to avoid the enemies and the minecarts
I've seen the glitch, problem is, you have to kill a necky to do it, but I could be used to minimize the kills if you can get past the kremlings with it.
Git proving Undertale is not that special by forcing it's main mechanic into other games that clearly weren't meant for this

Mash all 4 buttons as the Kongs pass by the corner between the first two levels to skip straight to Orang-utan Gang passing the two problem levels before it. Obscenely cheesy glitch but hey, gets past a level that's probably a run ender.
Follow up, I'm pretty sure you can do a wrong warp that gets you past the run ender but it might require an enemy kill. It's stupidly hard but check out the any% speed run I can't remember exactly where they skip to

@@frog9304 It's a reference to Postal 2, I believe, where if you go through that game scoring the barest minimum of kills (and I'm pretty sure you can beat the whole game without killing anybody at all, too), that's the line they use at the end of the game in reference to your performance.
"Glitch that skips the entire game?" Is that an ACE glitch, by any chance? Because if so, it may be possible to modify the unbeatable levels so that they are beatable.
I thought he meant the glitch on the first world map where you can skip ahead to a later level if you do a frame-perfect input on the corner of the paths between levels, but after looking it up again I guess it only takes you as far as world 3. I could have sworn I remembered there being a glitch that takes you to one of the final levels, though...

Though I'll admit I REALLY prefer the non-voiced ones. The reading part is what makes a huge part of the charm your videos carry to me. It's... I don't know, not the same, if it's voiced.
I have a great challenge idea for you, beat the DKC trilogy WHILE defeating every single enemy. It's basically a genocide/revenge mission since the enemies still treat you like diarrhea, despite you trying to be nice to them by not killing them at all.

there is one glitch that works only in mine-cart levels, if you take damage while in a minecart you temporarily jump out of the mine-cart holding Y and tapping B you can jump out of the way of the cart, and continue tapping B to continue jumping through the air. This works on all mine-cart levels, but only the first mine-cart level can't be finished using this glitch, because it requires you to transition through a minecart door. I found this glitch out as a child when i first got to play this game but purely enjoying the first mine-cart level and finding out about that bug/glitch.
Why does DKC have such a unique artstyle? There really isn't anything that looks quite like it.

Now the kart kremlings, we have to classify in the same braindead category of those who would only walk off the stage. In essence they have placed themselves within the very path of death. They are not real kremlings, only shells of them. Therefore we cannot count them as enemies.
Same with the bosses. They put themselves in situations where the only possible option is death. They pit you in a tiny walled-in room with an aggressor trying to take your life. Therefore your use of force is justified and their deaths can effectively be ruled suicides.
The neckys in the way of barrels similarly place themselves in the path of a moving car in essence.

Tbf there is no challenge jumping on the krash kremlings to get on their carts as it is almost exactly like jumping in an empty cart, it's just moreso a satisfaction factor than anything. (You have to be pretty bad to miss the carts after jumping on them anyway) So those don't count in my books

The Mini Necky's can't actually hurt you. If you don't get hit by their nuts, you can run through them.

I rememberr being disapointed when i completed original DKC with 1 life, not dying once, and under 1 hour. That grampa just ignord result when i rivaled his record!

Honestly, they need to add this as a secret accomplishment in all future games like Cuphead did, it’ll make the game WAY more interesting/challenging
In this game I always like getting the what I turned into a commonly used term throughout my circle of friends- man coins. Single bananas or a bunch of them, or an animal statue in a ridiculously dangerous location that is not really worth going after. The same goes for Mario games. Plenty of man coins in those.

I know that with a frame perfect glitch in mine cart madness, you can reduce the killing by 4. But you need to beat the level first so....I guess it doesn't count.
Nah you don’t have to jumproll. You can keep pressing Y and B and roll through the level
4:29 Going back into the entrance of Stop & Go Station warps you near the end... I believe most of, if not all, of the levels in the first two worlds feature either this mechanic or a warp barrel near the beginning of the level... However, I don’t know if this would count as “cheating” in this challenge...
Generally with these kinds of challenges you attempt to play the game normally first, then if impossible use shortcuts, if still impossible use bugs or glitches (If available). It's usually not counted as cheating if the shortcut/glitch is available naturally within the game.
Please do this for DKC2 and 3 too!!
