He had a vision and the team tried their best to make a good game, but it was ruined by unreasonable demands from their superiors who forced them to dismantle the game multiple times and remake it from scratch until it turned into an unsalvsgeable mess. Despite all the problems the game oozes Senba's great sense of style that is also visible in Metal Black.
This game became a running gag among Alexalchemy and some other Puerto Rican players. They kept running it at their charity events and eventually one of the tournaments became so big it capped at 128 entrants! I'd never play it again if I could be sure.
That triceratops run is possibly the best thing I have ever seen. I could never have imagined such a graceful stride. Capcom should take notes on this blessed game

He transitioned to sprite and art direction at Taito before directing the pretty stylish shootemups like Gun Frontier and Metal Black. This game was originally supposed to be the "third" in the Gun Frontier trilogy but he was handed a group of new programmers and a genre shift all at once. He said in a later interview that he handed in the final build - along with his resignation letter - at the same time.
This makes sense when looking at this game, it clearly had lots of passion put into it. Basically a team that wanted to succeed with what little they had, but the stakes were just too much against them. Such a shame.
If a sequel of that exists, I can imagine the bonus stage part that was shown in the vid, to be like those Rex games made by Gametornado; L. A. Rex, New York Rex, London Rex, Rio Rex, Miami Rex, and Mexico Rex.
It would be amazing if that were to happen. The Taito F2 hardware is well documented in MAME (see taito_f2.cpp). Actually, the Slapshot driver (slapshot.cpp) could be even more interesting for a potential "Dino Rex 2"; it's basically Taito F2 with the F3 palette chip (TC0650FDA), effectively doubling the max colors onscreen, and can throw a lot of data around (see Operation Wolf 3 for an excellent example).
The creator of Dino Rex was Takatsuna Senba, he made Gun Frontier and Metal Black for Taito and Dino Rex was meant to be his 3rd shmup for them. Buuuut because SF2 was a big deal, the Taito execs made Senba and co turn the whole thing into a fighter. Needless to say, it was a mess and Senba left Taito mid-development, seeing his project getting all butchered like that

Sadly enough I would've been playing this if I'd known about it back then. As an 80's kid I was used to playing crappy games and just accepted it...even pit fighter
the arcade version actually still aged pretty well and holds up to this very day just like the retro mortal kombat series, but the console and pc version are a dump graphically and horribly unplayable everyone should just stick with the arcade version instead.
Honestly, it still is pretty good, it's just that the Negative Edge button inputs on basically _everything_ make it finger-cramp hell. The only issue is that every single version of that game that exists outside of legitimate arcade cabinets are flawed ports, due to the original code being unrecoverable. The copy protection the developers put on it was so convoluted that _they_ can't even unlock it, making true 1-1 ports essentially impossible. For now, anyways.
They remind me of the Harryhausen era of monster movies. On one hand that's pretty cool, on the other it absolutely does not work for a fighting game lol

Dino Rex is probably only as janky as it is because this game was actually supposed to be a shooter (Taito's strongsuit), but when fighting games started taking off, Taito wanted something to capitalize off of their rise, but couldn't make anything new quick enough, so they canceled this dinosaur shooter and turned it into a fighter as quickly as posdible
my first encounter with this game was like last year when me and my younger-older brother discovered it on the 500 in one plug and play arcade thing that comes preloaded with loads of old games, we couldn't figure out the controls other than the basic movement and basic attacks, it was so fun, never knew there was an arcade mode, we jumped straight into PVP lol

I had this Dinosaur fighting game on the Wii called Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs Strike. I don’t really know what people think of it but it was one of my first times using codes to unlock stuff in games
I bought that for 3DS when it first came out since it was a launch title. It was obvious aimed at a young crowd and I was pushing 40 at the time. My reaction to that game is kind of hard to explain because it's such an odd game. If I remember correctly, you had one basic attack, and then a "coked out dino mega attack." So the whole game came down to recognizing your opponents telegraphed attacks, properly timing your dodge, then counter. Repeat until one dino wins. It sounds like a terrible formula, and I'm not sure I'd describe it as fun. But the game always held a weird fascination for me. I guess a sense of satisfaction when I get through a level.

It sounds like a terrible formula, and I'm not sure I'd describe it as fun. But the game always held a weird fascination for me. I guess a sense of satisfaction when I get through a level.

To my knowledge Warner Bros owns the Primal Rage IP. I used to hope Netherrealm might do something with it
