In America, especially rural areas, its very common for people to be riding their horses through town and go through drive throughs. Technically they are a form of transportation, so drive thrus are usually cool with it. Also a friend of mine had coyotes get in their pasture once and it ran their horse through the fence out onto a back rural road in the middle of the night and it got hit by a truck and killed like the week before their world championship they had qualified for. Roads and horses are no joke.
RE to the dogs coming up/aggressive towards to your horse: my horse and I were on a ride on the dirt roads around the barn and these two pugs came running up like they were tough sh*t and snarling and snapping at us. My gelding is a weenie okay, so I fully braced for a bolt or at least, a massive spook. Nope! He stood square, looked down at the little midget snapping at his feet and LUNGED forward, almost ripping the reins from my hands in a full on cobra-strike. The *rage* i felt surge through him in that moment was palpable, Not sure who was more shocked, me or the dog. Fortunately no dogs were chomped, nor horse traumatized and the ride ended on a good note and spooking at the mailbox.

Thank you! It's all so true! I love the clips of every day handling and relationship of horses. People who can't own a horse just want to be a part of the whole experience and learn how it all happens. Thank you for that! Animals are such a bright spot in life and you get that!
I always have a mini heart attack whenever I see one of my horses lying down cuz I'm like "OH no he's dead! wait no, just asleep, But I dont see him breathing. Oh, never mind he just stood up. OH MY GOSH is he limping"
That silly mare face after she got schooled for almost biting made me cackle out loud! So funny. I always feel guilty laughing at videos where animals fall down because I just don't know how injured they actually might be. :0
The clip with the horse running down the road with police happened in Secret Harbour Western Australia!! Horse managed to run 20km before walking into a doctors surgery 😅
It happened often when I still lived in Netherlands that dogs came up to us aggressively. Usuallly just turning my horse in the direction of the dog would be enough to scare them off. I rode a very brave Frisian mare and she didnt mind charging the dog if necessary. She was fantastic. Someone at our stables though did get attacked by a dog and her horse took the brunt of it, luckily she stayed on her horse. But the poor horse did need stitches. But stay on your horse if you can, the horse is much stronger than you and you will be safer on its back. A horse can deal with a dog attack, humans can't.
So on the dog thing; I’m pretty sure that rider is from the UK where there have been multiple issues/legal issues over dogs vs riders on pulbic paths/trails. If i’m not mistake i think that rider had stated her horse was maybe involved in a dog attack? My late mare when kept at home was around friendly dogs…at 2 boarding places not so much. Due to dismounting once when a dog decided to bite her leg…i fell under her. She then developed the “kill all dogs who attack when mom is on me” policy. I had arguments with dog owners who got mad at me when my mare would defend from an attacking dog.
People are horrible! I’m glad this hasn’t happened to me- for the dogs sake, I understand it’s not really it’s fault but when my horse is at risk I do not care I only wish you could slap some sense into the owners aswell 🤣
Big John and his humans deserve your time and attention. Those girls are trying all they can to preserve and protect the dignity of work horses whose original owners consider them worthless if they can’t provide value to their farms. Please consider highlighting their work.
Here in Texas we never dismount when dogs come at the horses. It’s rare, but at my old farm there were really aggressive dogs down the road. We would carry a long stick, gun or other object just in case we needed to defend our horse or ourselves.
There's one "but". If U stay on, and things get bad - U might get badly hurt. Sometimes it's safer to stand by the horse or even let it go, so the horse can run - probably back to the stable while it cools down or right back to the stable... Lots of them will go back. But it's better than getting you hurt and/or your horse hurt - if the dogs are like... U know... aggressive, wanna bite and stuff. If they're just interested and wanna play then yeah... there's probably bigger chance of them getting hurt than U and yer horse.
I have been enjoying your videos. Just an old trick to add shine to your horses coat, use Linseed meal in the horse feed daily. Small handful. I had a buckskin quarter horse, his coat would really shine. Learned about this from a man who taught me a lot about horses.
It depends - I’ve been attacked by a dog. I stayed on. My horse leapt in to the air and galloped off while I was telling the owners to get their dog after he couldn’t take anymore. I got really hurt. I wish I had got off and whipped the crap out of the dog if I’m honest and I’ll probably always get off in this situation again.
i never go on trailrides without a long whip anymore. Last time it happened I forgot my whip. sadly, my horse wasn't interested enough to run over that little rat. flipped off the owner though so that was fun :) yes; always whip a dog if it charges you. Id prefer my dog getting whipped over it getting kicked to death by a horse
Because of the dogs: if you stay on the back of the horse, the horse and the dogs obviously are facing each other and since the horse is afraid and the dogs are also afraid and barking because they dont know how to handle the situation or are unsure about the situation because they e.g. never seen a horse and their owner does not say anything so they are feeling like they need to handle the situation and protect their owner / their pack. Now we have a horse in fear and dogs which are not sure what to do which is really high risk! If you stay on the horse you do not control the situation and let the situation possibly escalate, SO, get down, in front of your horse (it needs to have you as a shield, the leader of the herd would always go in front of the other horses), look the dogs in die eyes and shout smthg to make them go away (a dog would bark to chase them away, shouting imitates barking) if they do not react then go after them with your stick, hit them if necessary. This may seem violent but thats clear communication for the dog. You are resolving the situation like this and taking over the control, since none of the animals can handle this because the horse and the dogs are unsure in the end so the solution is someone who is sure in their behaviour. (of course your horse needs to have clear respect for you so you are safe that it does not injure you after you got off its back) edit: i understand the fear of your horse running away, but I think if your horse runs away with you on it in pure panic OR is bucking you off the risk of accidents is also there, but with you on its back, you will also be in the accident, In my opinion you are safer on the ground.
I can answer the what does it feel like to ride a horse that big: So when I was in elementary I rode an 18hh Thoroughbred x Percheron gelding. His trot was huge, I couldn’t sit it for life, and his canter was horrifying to sit. I ride a super tiny 13.3 chestnut mare now and she’s completely the opposite. For being a chestnut mare she’s super sweet. Super easy to ride.
The videos of that lady going through the drive thru is in norco, ca. Which is also known as horse city! There are hitch posts all over town and corrals, and the sidewalks are dirt for the horses!
I know you posted this three years ago, but thought I would reply as I'm from SoCal also. My aunt and uncle lived in Norco and we loved visiting them because they had horses! We would spend the whole visit brushing, petting and giving them treats. One of my best childhood memories. Enjoy your horses!
I have ridden one of those huge horses and it is incredible. They are gentle giants and it feels like you are sitting across and armchair. I prefer bare back riding, but the saddle for this horse was huge as well. I found him to be the perfect ride even when cantering. One big drawback, if they accidentally step on your foot or lean on you you definitely feel it.
I've got a bit of experience on bigger drafts. Of course not as big as that, but I had two horses I rode a lot: A 17.3hh Percheron x Hanovarian - He wasn't the most comfortable, but I think it was because of the warmer blood giving him a more lively gait if you got him moving. He had a wonderful canter and a very agile jump for a heavier set horse. The other was an 18.3hh 3/4 Shire x, his trot has always been super bouncy just because of how big his stride is. His canter on the other hand, especially if you got a good contact and he was really using his hind end was amazingly comfortable. He was strange because he could collect ridculously well on a day when he had plenty of energy. I've found the most comfortable horses are the irish cobs/gypsy vanners, I used to ride a 15.1hh gypsy cob that got gelded late and did a bit of hunting as a stallion. He was as wide as he was tall and it was literally like riding a hairy armchair; he did have a son which was half vanner, half irish draft who also had the same armchair gait. Used to ride them out trekking with no stirrups because it was so hard to feel unseated on them. Speaking of the half and half and dogs. Yeah, dogs are no fun. One of our main routes passes through a farmyard that has a public right of way.... and they never ever used to have the boarder collies watched if they were loose. The older ones were fine and would just watch, but one of their younger ones had a go at that horse. Got a swift kick . On a different note, I've also had a border collie pup (around 9 months) throw herself at full speed at my head when I was riding a spooky mare; the outdoor school was built next to a very old wall that kept the lawn area in place. Both she and myself shat ourselves. I've never ridden that fast in a school before, let alone encouraged it because crazy pup.
The girl riding through the Starbucks driveway lives in Norco, California (also called Horse Town USA). Its super common to see people on horses going through drive-throughs everywhere over here in Norco lol
Years ago I've ridden with my friend through the Drive-in from McDonald's. It was fun, but a weird feeling, too. And they were nice to us... I don't like clips where animals or humans seems to be got hurt.
In situations like this it really depends on your horse, I know for sure I would be safer on the ground in a situation when my horse starts to freak out (which barely ever happens) and it's because we've done a huge amount of groundwork that he feels safer and much easier to manage and direct with me on the ground. Whereas from the saddle if I start to loose control there is absolutely nothing I can do
I had a thoroughbred that loved chasing dogs. He'd wait till they were fairly close then spin with teeth bared. Frightened the shit out of them. It was always safer on him than on the ground. Needless to say we were in high demand for trail rides.
@@susim4503 Id rather be on the horse personally 👍🏻 Every dog ive encountered one kick from my horse and they are like "ok enough" ! Obviously not all dogs are like this and will attack😒

Eli.Rose is in Australia. I’m pretty sure I remember that galloping horse in Perth. Maybe an escaped racehorse near Ascot? Scary stuff for all concerned! Horse owner and drivers.
Horses CAN feel emotions. Maybe not to the extent or complexity that humans can but they HAVE EMOTIONS. THey can fear, be sad, angry, depressed, happy, love, joy. IF you just spend a little time with horses you can tell that they each have there own unique personality, some are more clingy than others, some just want to be pet while others (My arab X QH mare) just want you to leave them alone unless you have food, they disserve love and respect
So there was one time my horse was laying out in the field and the night before had stormed pretty badly lightning and all and so went out to feed that morning and normally everyone is at the gate by nice ready to eat. And hes flat out lookin like a carcass lmao. I enjoy the ones of ranchers riding through the scenic beauty of Wyoming, Montana or Utah. Makes me want to give up the equestrian sport and move out west to work cattle.
It's still the equestrian sport... Just harder in a lot of ways. 😅 Ranch and Rodeo is "equestrian sport" but it's hard af and you will bleed, cry, end up in the ICU at least once and probably be forced to drop a horse with a shot gun because you can't get the vet out more then once. 😅 But it's also amazing.
Drafts can be comfy to ride or super jarring. Pretty much like any other horse. That said the majority of cold bloods i've ridden have felt like riding a couch lol

Our stable is also next to a road and even though it is like a 30 road the stupid non horse people go like 80 so they always scare the horses, and we have to go over that road to get too the grass fields and the drivers get really impatient and wants to drive before the horses so they go at lika 100, which is really scary especially when we walk with the younger children
“I think sexualised for your sport [regardless of gender] is wrong. But when it comes to how women feel about it I cannot comment because I am not a woman.” Appreciate it being addressed this way, showing support while leaving autonomy for women on the matter. Gj :)
I have experienced a LOT of issues while out with my mare on the trails including loose dogs and the worst yet......dirt bikers meeting us head on while flying around a blind turn. My opinion is that it's always safer to dismount because I am better equipped to handle whatever is going to happen next from the ground. I have a 14 foot lead rope with a leather popper on the end and I've started bringing it with me on the trail rides. I hook it to the O-ring of her bit and then hold the rope along with the reigns in my hands (the rope has enough slack so pulling the reigns will not also pull the rope). This ensures that I can emergency dismount at the first sign of trouble while still "holding onto her" via the lead rope. Then I have an immediate long lead to use (in case I need to use the leather popper to scare off other animals, etc.). This is the only way I can save the dog's life because she will straight up stomp the dog and murder it. We have leash laws so people who don't leash their dogs really piss me off.
I wouldve hopped off too, because my mare sometimes Forgets she has me on top of her so when she can see me, she deals with spooky stuff better... Then her support human is back in sight and she's no longer 'alone' ;) mightve been their reasoning too, who knows
I like seeing horses facial expressions their reactions to things or animal communicator with them because it’s interesting to hear what they got to say LOL
I was always taught to stay on my horse. Reason being you don't know the dogs and they could attack you. It's hard enough to calm a horse from the ground to also have to worry about getting bit on the backside from a stray dog.
On the dog situation - depends on the situation and the horse. However often dogs don’t recognise you as a person on the horse so getting off and calling them helps a lot for the aggression thing normally they will relax and come and sniff you vs for instance staying on my anxious arab that wants to swing around and run home, just aggravates things.
There's a stable in the Netherlands that breed fresians and about 6 or so months ago one lost a foal. The day before a foal lost it's mother. The fresian adopted the foal and it's been the sweetest story ever! The foal really stands out in the herd because he's brown haha. Can't remember what breed he is but his mother was a very expensive horse. High pedigree I guess. I don't know a lot about that stuff. The name of the RUclips channel is 'Fresian horses' if you wanna check them out.
Matt you should do a video trying PPGs/mounted games. Look up a stable that has a pony club and they should have the equipment or be able to direct you to someone that does. PPGs are seriously the best, a great adrenalin rush and the ponies get really competitive too, you can tell they love it. Regarding the video with the dogs, I think staying on the horse vs getting off depends on the horse & rider. If the rider believes that they will fall off soon if they don’t get off then they should get off, instead of staying on and hoping that they don’t fall off. Though I would recommend not to pull the reins over the head; that way if the horse bolts there is less chance of the reins getting wrapped around their legs.
Wow 😮 once again I caught a video that you just posted, I’m so excited! I love all your comments on the TikTok videos. I’ve seen so many of them. Some really disgust me and some like the orphan foal and the mom that adopted him made my heart leap! Thanks Matt please do keep doing more!

Protecting you!
Big John is so amazing, his an ex Amish work horse that was abused and headed for slaughter he was saved also his 24 yrs old
Yea heard recently they dont in general have much respect for their horses. All gods creatures till its convenient to kick them out.
@@Areyousayingidontknowmyname -I've read the Amish have lots of puppy mills.
@@vgil1278 I hope not. But would not surprise me at all

Also belgian drafts are very comfortable to ride! They dont steer very easily though at least the ones ive ridden. Percherons are like riding horses theyre super athletic for a draft!
The smoothest trot I ever felt in my life was on a Percheron. It took my brain a moment to even register what was happening it was so magical! 😂
@@maryvallas772 wow lucky! All the perchernons ive ever ridden had very animated trots granted they were bred for carriage showing! 😅 the broods they used for producing american warmbloods however had a bit of a different feel but again so athletic for a draft breed!
I’ve never ridden a belgian draft, but I watched someone ride one in a lesson once and it was basically what you said, looked pretty comfortable but a lot of horse to steer!
@@samanthasimmons5699 yeah, I was not expecting it at all! His walk was pretty animated just because of his sheer size I think, but when he started to trot it was like gliding! So powerful and smooth, it was incredible!
The full-contact joust troupe I work with uses Percherons. They are all reining trained and are SUPER athletic. You can ride them brideless and bareback and the respond beautifully to leg/weight shifts. Such dreams to ride, eh?
The Hoof GP he trims cows feet, and he lives in Scotland. Beautiful Country.
i lost it when he said chase would be back in australia 😂😂😂
That silly mare face after she got schooled for almost biting made me cackle out loud! So funny.
I always feel guilty laughing at videos where animals fall down because I just don't know how injured they actually might be. :0
I totally agree, never get off a horse in a bad situation, it’s to easy for a horse to get away from you.
But isn’t it better to get off and loose a horse than have your horse throw you off, get hurt and also loose your horse?🤔😅
@@dominikasmiskova6452 No.
The orphaned baby with the mare made my heart happy.
I like watching horses outside the ring. On the beach, out on a trail. Out with scenery.
Seems to be so many entitled dog owners these days!
Learned about this from
a man who taught me a lot about horses.
❤🙏🏻 nice tip, thank you!
(of course your horse needs to have clear respect for you so you are safe that it does not injure you after you got off its back)
edit: i understand the fear of your horse running away, but I think if your horse runs away with you on it in pure panic OR is bucking you off the risk of accidents is also there, but with you on its back, you will also be in the accident, In my opinion you are safer on the ground.
Just wanted to say I appreciate all your videos I enjoy what you put out
I can answer the what does it feel like to ride a horse that big:
So when I was in elementary I rode an 18hh Thoroughbred x Percheron gelding. His trot was huge, I couldn’t sit it for life, and his canter was horrifying to sit.
I ride a super tiny 13.3 chestnut mare now and she’s completely the opposite. For being a chestnut mare she’s super sweet. Super easy to ride.
Check out Adonisantics, he's a crazy, silly horse. I love big John on the oktacos that you showed. 🐴💜
Oh my gooossshhh adonis!!!!
When I tell you I cried laughing at Matt.He is hallarious.
I've got a bit of experience on bigger drafts. Of course not as big as that, but I had two horses I rode a lot:
A 17.3hh Percheron x Hanovarian - He wasn't the most comfortable, but I think it was because of the warmer blood giving him a more lively gait if you got him moving.
Can no longer afford anything to do with horses (was around 6-17 years)… Watching these videos is pure nostalgia for me
The girl riding through the Starbucks driveway lives in Norco, California (also called Horse Town USA). Its super common to see people on horses going through drive-throughs everywhere over here in Norco lol

I had a Chat with some RUclips creators at the virtual Afterparty after an Award. They said you need the right Thumbnails thats really important.

I called him i yelled his name he did NOT budge so i walked up to him and pat him on the forehead real soft sayin his name when he got up i said you nearly gave me a freaken heart attack 😂😂😂
The outrage at the sleeve! 😂 love your personality Matt!
Matt!!! I know next to nothing about horses but I literally LOVE your videos

But when it comes to how women feel about it I cannot comment because I am not a woman.”
Appreciate it being addressed this way, showing support while leaving autonomy for women on the matter. Gj :)
Love safety tips, emotional stories, and the riding games.
Matt is just so relatable t
"How do i say this without being cancelled" - Everytime i say something online nowadays.
I like seeing horses facial expressions their reactions to things or animal communicator with them because it’s interesting to hear what they got to say LOL
The way Matt was so mad about the sleeve getting wet 🤣 I feel you though, Matt 🤣
I was so hoping (and slightly nervous) to see you react to my one viral Tiktok (4.8m) horse video 😂
I was always taught to stay on my horse. Reason being you don't know the dogs and they could attack you. It's hard enough to calm a horse from the ground to also have to worry about getting bit on the backside from a stray dog.
Matt in the beginning:I hate TikTok
Matt the rest off the video:*laughing and saying great things about each TikTok
The rollerblading woman and her horse is great
yeah, you spoke from the bottom of my heart, its a sport, nothing se*ual
Love Matt’s Maya Delorez drip recently.
My Arab hated dogs, actually killed two attacking him. Terrifying!
I think that girl on her skates with her horse is from Germany not sure though
Correct, she's German. VandiegoRico is her account, I think :)

You should watch the friesen horses. Queen uniek and rising star! It’s beautiful to see for real
Equestrian Reacting To My Little pony Friendship is magic would be fun
Matt should do more of these... Matt reviews (funny ones only) equestrian tik tok.
