Norwegian here, and I agree. It's the same here. Being successful is great, being rich is great, good for you, congratulations. I'm happy for you! But... however successful and rich you are, that doesn't necessarily make you better than anyone else. However rich you are, you should still treat everyone well and with respect, and stay humble.
The thing is though, it was actully satire when it was written.
In Sweden we thank people for thanking us.

As a swede I've had encounters where someone thanked me for thanking them and I as a response have thanked them back. Then I walk around with that moment on repeat for the rest of the day.
I'm a swede, and I once heard an american say "I'm very humble, I'm probably the most humble person I know". He said it with 100% sincerity, I just dropped my jaw.
Just know they probably aren’t, if you are a humble person you wouldn’t have to constantly say it like that 😅

Swede here. Jantelagen is just to be as humble as possible and not look down on others or think you’re better. Don’t think you’re special doesn’t mean hate yourself, it just means integrity and respect for others.

I think i might by swedish by heart. I have also been traveling there and really loved it. The people are just not into your face, but when you actually get to talk to someone they are so so nice and friendly. At least the ones i met. ;)

yes, sounds funny but is truly a terrible thing, not one leader or revolution leader will ever be born in Sweden... not even talking about how happy you are is a terible thing... there is a very remarkable thing in those countryies: you don´t see public affection between people, even lovers do not kiss in public, I see it as the death of the spirit, a well orchestrated drama that has been over hundreds of years

Sweden, Denmark and Norway are just really competitive siblings. We don't want to lose to each other and we don't want anyone else to win against any of our family members.

Wont happen. When you mix up cultures materialm is what you get, since its the only thing that all these different cultures have in common on a lower level. That always happens when mixing ethnicities, races, cultures . As a northern german the swedes are very familiar to you, since their character is GERMANIC. And we have that heritage as well to a high degree.
I don't think you guys should take lessons from nordic cultures. Different people have different way of doing things. But yeah, many Americans tend to be a bit to braggy. South americans are far more braggy, too self confident and proud.

As cute as Skarsgård makes him sound, the reality is that the the king is basically a former jet-set playboy who when he was younger made no effort to appear as anything but a rich privileged white man who had never had to think about money. But I guess that's where you can see the Jante Law in action: The Swedish people only warmed a bit to him once he seemingly slowed down, married a flight attendant (of course), had a family and grew a bit older.

Well Zlatan wasn´t really raised in swedish culture. His dad is a bosnian muslim and his mom is a croation chatolic.
Zlatan will tell you he's very un-Swedish. He's pretty much extreme by any cultural standard.
Zlatan is not Swedish at heart. He grew up in Sweden but he wasn't raised as Swede. Although Sweds loved him because of football. I can say Zlatan lived a rough life he work hard to get where he is. But watching some interviews he is cocky. While Alexander is a real Swede raised to be humble. His dad Stellan walk on streets of Stockholm wearing simple shirt and fliplops.
@ Zlatan is cocky, but it's also a bit of an act. Treat him with respect and he treats you equally back.
He's not a typical Swede. He's like many people growing up in the suburbs. There's a working class macho culture like you have in the projects in the USA.

The Swedish part of hating danes, norwegians and finns is pure satire nowadays. Deep down we all love eachother like family, but we like to make fun of eachother and then treat ourselves to beers afterwards and have a crack at eachother just because of the old days.

Yes, that has became more true as the years go by, but my aunt, who moved from Finland to Sweden in the late 70s says that some Swedes do look down on Finnish Swedish people. Maybe it has to do with when in the 70s many Finns moved to Sweden to work and behaved a little differently than Swedes, I don't know.
This is very true! My Danish grandmother also had this attitude. It's perfectly fine to feel pride and a sense of accomplishment, but don't let it go to your head or take out your pride on others. Humility is a necessary part of your thinking. Valuable trait that allows for real empathy and the ability to meet others where they are without comparison

I am from Sweden and I remember having an interview for a thing called NIU, which is a football education school thing. And the coach asked me the question: what would you say are your 3 best qualities? And I just imploded. That is the ultimate Swede killer question.

Those things tend to turn those few people who are fortunate into dicks in most countries. That and all the people from the former Soviet Union who basically behave like they do everywhere, once they got some money. And it's not very humble.

I've been learning Swedish as I plan to move there and have found that Swedes are very into not thinking highly of themselves, every one is equal. I think that's awesome.
Just a recommendation, don't learn Swedish until you move their. No one will know what you are saying and they will tell you to speak English.

The Law of Jante came from Denmark and it basically says that “you are not better than anybody else”. It is simply a lifestyle of not bragging that almost every Scandinavian grew up with.

Today, I got an email from my professor saying that I had won an award for writing the best exam. The Swedish part of me was like "I didn't deserve this. My exam wasn't that good. This is so weird", but the Asian side of me was like *take a picture and send it to all my friends*
Lol. When I was studying overseas (in Asia, as it happens) I once got a long email from a professor complimenting me on being the best student in class. It made me extremely uncomfortable and also proud and ??? and I had no idea how to respond so I never actually replied.

Please don't generalize about Asians. I never proclaim or advertise my accomplishments and I don't know how to take a compliment, that's why most of the time we laugh it off. It depends on one's upbringing, I guess.
"Jantelagen" is all about humility. That's the core of the unofficial law. That's why Swedes are so nice when they communicate with other people. "You're not better than anybody else" means don't let your success go over your head and become an asshole. Swedish people know authority corrupts and you will hurt others when your corrupt ego grows outside of your own person. That's the point of the people law.
Of course you're free to become successful. Just don't think you can behave like a douchebag because of it, because then you're an asshole. You're free to boast if you do it eloquently and in the right moment, just don't become a douchebag in the process. It's a very delicate process in the eyes of Swedes.
So what if Skarsgård is a famous actor? We can respect he has succeeded in becoming famous and getting money, but he won't be treated differently from anybody else in line at the supermarket, as a community. He will also very seldomly be confronted with people who wants his autograph or something as silly. Most Swedes might recognize a famous person, but they won't approach, because: "Sköt dig själv och skit i andra." We respect the privacy of other people to a large extent.
If you visit Sweden, don't be afraid we're so "cold". It's just because you haven't approached us. If you do and you show friendly intent to communicate, we are very friendly, almost 100%. Otherwise if you don't start the conversation, we ignore you out of respect of your own personal space. If no one starts a conversation with us, we usually won't start one either, unless we're drunk.

@NorthernLights ofDemons the origins are European but these modern times they've not much else n common with European culture and people (sadly). USA does really need to learn Jantelag as a code of conduct. Humbleness is a great quality.
@NorthernLights ofDemons yes Jantelov (sorry I made a mistake 😊) I am Italian, and I do really love the whole European culture and historical/social background and appreciate the quality of other countries. I can tell north Europeans are more disciplined (I myself had a very disciplined upbringing, favouring culture and education) and it is a good thing; I really like this Jantelov way of thinking. I wish more countries would be like this....but society nowdays seems to give space only to mediocrity, via the social medias and things in general... and American "culture" (I won't call it culture btw) is totally messed up. They export bullsh*t and I personally don't want any of it in Europe.
Americans seem very literal, they are super bad at picking up on dry humour or heavy sarcasm, they think we are being rude and get all flustered, lol.

I really related to his Emmy story. When he said (around 4:30) and then I started to loathe myself.... I went: jupp jupp, I would too.
But the audience laughed really hard like it was the most implausible thing and a hilarious joke that anyone would even considering thinking like that. A culture chock right there. 🙂
As a Finn my first reaction to the praise is "Is s/he fucking with me?" and when I realize it is a genuine praise I get embarassed. I wonder if we Finns react like that because Finland used to be part of Sweden for hunreds of years?

My Swedish great grandmother used to say " one should believe they're no more than anyone else but no less than anyone else either " . This is what I think Alexander means... Bragging is so not a part of the Swedish culture.

Since his days on True Blood, I’ve always liked Alexander Skarsgard as an actor, but this interview makes me really respect him as a person, too. Alexander seems like he would truly be a lovely human being to know in real life.
What a great interview this was. I just got to learn a bit about Sweden, the culture and mannerism, Alexander's personality and his experiences (I didn't really know who he was but I wanna check out his movie). And nothing seemed offensive nor too intrusive.

The point of jante, or at least the best parts, is that if you do something great, like cure cancer, that doesn't make you better then anybody else. Being part of a community where everybody does their part. Like how the person doing the dishes in the cafeteria is just as important as the engineer in the office or the the owner of the company.

Agreed. Modesty is not engrained in American culture. As a result, when someone does display it, it's often viewed as unusual or exceptional - they are an outlier. There are some of us Americans who value or strive to be more modest, but it can be challenging when society around you reinforces and rewards the opposite.

Janteloven was written in Denmark by Aksel Sandemose (born Axel Nielsen on a small island called Morsø). The fictive town Jante is based on the town where he was born. Nykøbing Mors. Aksel didn't use Janteloven to be humble quite the opposite actually. Nykøbing Mors or actually the entire island lives by janteloven in a negative way which make me embarrassed knowing that my roots are from there. I myself was born in Nykøbing Mors.

I'm a Swede and i was actually forced to celebrate my 30th birthday. I hate my own birthday but it's just because of the logic i apply to it. I have done nothing, only survived to the age of 30 which is no big deal so why the fuck would i celebrate it? Turning 30 for me is like waking up and then forced to celebrate because i brushed my teeth.
