i hope fat mike sticks with this, with his personality and comedic sense he is perfect for doing podcasts.....cheers brother!
This is turning out to be a badass podcast all around.
Is it just me or does Fat mike sound probably the best he has ever sounded in this intro? Sounds great.
It's probably because this is the podcast he was looking forward to the most. Meeting childhood friends and talking about the old times back then is great event if your not a fckn punk rock star :)
Mike sings just the "my name is fat mike i'm an old punkrocker" and "i thought i'd do more damage with my own podcast" bits. All other voices are from John E Carey from Old Man Markley
It's called Melodyne
I've listened to heaps of podcasts for years, none quite fill my cup all the way. Until now! This is THEE podcast
It’s way better than I anticipated. Glad I finally clicked
+1
Punk in la is the same with hip hop in la they took everything from new York and also detroit

Mike needs to have Bruno on as a regular guest. He's hilarious!
Great stuff, I could listen to all 3 of these guys all day. Hoping they do a part two.
NOFX has been my favorite punk band for over 20 years. Love the podcast. I barely watch anything other than video podcasts & this is a great place to hear about the punk scene. Seen NOFX a few times in Florida and always had a great time. Always envy the talent I see & wish I had the confidence and will to make my own music.
Fake the confidence and the talent will follow.
There is no low bar for punk talent. Give it a go rather than regret it
@@Jonesy2Bad what a great reply
That song at the end...
completely ripped my heart apart. 47:41 I wasn't prepared for that.
To be honest, I wasn't the biggest fan of nofx. I listened to you guys, but not very often. Then, I listened to the hepatitis bathtub audio book a few years back, and I became an even bigger fan. That being said; please, for the love of all things gnarly, keep these podcasts coming. Helping my work day go a lot quicker listening to these. The one with Greg Hetson was awesome. Keep it sleazy!!
That intro has been stuck in my head for the past week and I hollered when I heard the new addition! 😍 I am loving your podcast so much.
Have you listened to Fatty's musical, Home Street Home? The (podcast's) intro song is a variation of the song "Safe Words" from HSH. It's pretty funny. I'd tell you more, but that'd ruin the fun, ha.
And I love that every episode has new lyrics based on the content of that specific episode.
This was my up bringing as well in punk rock. I was there for it all, poseur gigs, riots etc, and I watched the lads beat him, that was common place I hated about our scene, and I was the bully smasher! I love this podcast Mike, and can't wait for each episode! I wish I could share my stories! Like you, I've got almost two hundred flyers from 81 on I don't know what will happened to them when I die, but I think they should be in your museum here in LV. I have a massive poster I drew from this artists work, the S/T skeleton screaming for a Pepsi on his knees chain to a wall in 8th grade. i was a big S/T music fan, but hated the gangs, because of the stabbings so I starting hating the pit, also because it turned into a lame ass "Circle Mosh Pit" lol! I left the scene only to return 13 years later lol! I was always at Sportmans Hall it was down the hill from me The Cathey De Grande, The Vex, Olympic, Perkins Palace, Florentine Gardens, so many in between, and i was at a majority of the gigs mentioned in this podcast and I was in 3 riots. The Exploited at Mendiolas Ballroom, Dead Kennedy's at Wilmington, and Bad Religion at El Portel which my brother filmed, because Sandin said come down and bring the camera, Pennywise were the only ones that played, NOFX were onstage for sound check and about to play, but the fire marshals it down, because of over capacity and the chairs bottles shoes anything not nailed down just started flying toward NOFX and at me onstage with them and my brother with the camera next to me lol! Bad Religion we're headlining, but had to play a make up gig weeks later. The next day the news was at our house. I did an interview and they aired my brothers footage that night and all week into the next and as a result, BAD RELIGION sold 150,000 copies of 1988's Suffer and Against The Grain in '89 both blew up. I believe this was a major factor outside of Epitaph and simply put, killer songs behind Bad Religions popularity.
A lot of people by exposure saw them, thanks to the media we all love to hate lol! We're not taking credit by any means, we were simply just a huge contributing factor to the rise of their success.
The photo on the cover of the BR riot dvd is of a punk on someone's shoulders flipping the bird, which was snapped by Susan Jones at a BR gig at the Palladium, and given to my brother specifically for the cover.
The my brothers footage on the news was also used in Pennywise Home Movies, where I get just a couple seconds talking time like Mac in Always Sunny! I spoke for 10 minutes, and they used 5 seconds! Lol!
rad.
Y'all ain't nuthin without us New Yorkers
@@leahflower9924 I heard the stories of NYHC back in the early 80's and scary as hell but I.a. was huge with lots of gangs and scary as fuck! L.a. was more violent than any other hardcore/punk scene in the world.
Dude, you are killing it with this series. Such awesome guests and the history that comes out of these conversations are awesome to hear. Keep it up! Looking forward to more.
please keep doing these. you're a legend and a hero to me
That's one good thing when you're old:
You can tell a lot of stories!
...
Did I say "old"?
I wanted to say "experienced"... 😉
Thanks a lot for the interview! 😊👍🏻
Oh those are my favorite songs as a musician myself. I love almost every song you guys have ever made . Bad religion..you guys ...and against me! ....you guys are my musical therapy.
fucking love that Fat Mike is doing podcasts!
I was born n raised in Dogtown. South Santa Monica SSM. We didn't surf and didn't skate in Venice. In HS 81 ST parties were legendary. I Never messed with these guys, or their friends. Common denominator was Marina Skatepark. I knew by face these guys, or see them around town. When the crazy backyard parties started , I hung by himself , kept my mouth shut , and was given the What's up? Or head nods. I think since they knew I was from SM and had seen from Marina or the parties they didn't fuck with me. One night at Sun valley , there was a bunch of those BPO / fff guys that started fucking with me in the pit. Sun Valley was notorious for fights. And this night I was the target . I had knocked one of there homeboys on his ass , and was surrounded quickly, I was blindsided and knocked to the ground met by punches and kicks. Evidently some guys I knew casually from Venice from the Marina days, jumped in . One of them was Polar Bear . Fists were flying and one of those guys told me to me to split. At Sun Valley there was that area in the back outside that had a wooden dog eared fence. I jumped over that so fast and ran to my friends ride outside by that park across the street. I hid under there for about 15 min till someone had told I had gotten whupped . When shit went down and you were from the area, they backed you up. Nothing but respect from these Men
I watched John beat people next to me and in fact that dude saved my ass a few times at gigs, he was a big heart and bailed me out of the pit because I was a smaller kid. I wish I was sitting in on this conversation aaaah!! I can add so much to this...
@The Music Graveyard So cool! So one question. The dude John threw over the cliff. What happened to him? Did he survive? Poor dude.
I met that sheriff they were talking about, he was my bailiff at the Bellflower Courthouse. I had to go a bunch of times for restitution payments, so every few months I would see him, and he noticed my tattoos, and we started talking.... he's a nice guy, for a cop.
Bruno started a fight with me. the Dickies at the Music Machine 1984. gnarly.
Black Dawg (aka Marcus da anarchist) of the Oakland Pyrate Punx would be a great guest. His history and involvement in the east bay punk scene is legendary.
Pyrate punx!!!
@@Oi-know i use to be in the oakland pyrates. Tried to start up sin valley pyrate punx as well but it didn't pan out.
Keep these podcast this long!!!
Im glad mike made the decision to do this podcast, im not into the punk scene as much these days, so i feel like this brings me back to my roots some. I still feel lile i should be a guest but what fucking ever man.
Man I don't know where u r from. If it's a big or small city. I'm born n raised in Detroit Michigan. We got bars n clubs and venues all around me some litterally less than a 1/2 mile from me. I'm lucky. I'm not sure how hard it is to get to these type places where u live. But I'm 40, and gotta say, it's still fun for me. Theres not as many people my age because of heroin and fentynl about 60% of them I grew up with r dead, I'm addicted to the garbage too but alive thank God. But just wanna say GET BACK OUT THERE! YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE! GO SEE THE SHOWS. GO HANG OUT! BUY YOUR FAVORITE BANDS SHIRTS! you only live once. You only live once. You only live once.
I think you get what I'm saying. Hope you get back out there my friend.
Also. Who are you? You say u should be a guest? Someone Mike grew up with?
@@DetroitFettyghost Methadone probably saved my life. People have a lot of mixed feelings about methadone clinics, but when you're ready, I'd give one a try (if you haven't already). My nice long, slow, easy-does-it taper off the stuff made life so much more bearable. I think it varies from state to state, but here in Utah there was no cap on dosing, so some people were on 10 milligrams, other were on hundreds. (I topped out near 200, I think, and tapered down to 6.) And in Utah you can earn your way to 13 take-home doses. Going in every single day sucked, but keep peeing clean and get those take-homes!
Hang in there, friend.
@@MikeP2055 hey brother! I've been on methadone at few different clinics some multiple times, I'm on it for the 7th time right now, just started back I'm on 55mg not nearly enough yet, but the thing is this clinic is giving me so many issues and it's the only one I can go to right now zi really feel unsafe there, not that I'll be harmed, but that I'll get dosed out again like the last two times. I didn't do any thing wrong there it was just dirty drops but I was only there like 55 days last time and they kicked me out for dirtu drops because they were all fentynl he said.....but....that's ALL DETROIT HAS ON THE STREET lol. It's bullshit. So I feel like I'm screwed because I can't get my dose high enough to stop yet...I'm trying to make that jump anyday again so I don't get kicked out again.
People are on up to 400mg in Michigan, it varys widely state to state. But we have 13 day take homes as well, 2 groups per month,2 counselor visits per month. And 2 mandatory zoom meetings per month. It sucks if you work because it's all between 5am and 1 pm....makes it impossible if your on dayshift.....
Was that ancient ST gig/video from the Dutch Holland doc: surfpunks documentary?
That’s a must see if you’re in to this early 80’s LA punk history.
Are there any documentaries about the punk rock ganging and music of the late 70s and 80s?
3 people is the perfect amount for a podcast
Ha, fact check-checkin' but not gonna do it here, so call me and I'll fill in some blanks and whatnot old friend. Enjoyed this show a ton. It was good to see Bruno's smiling face after all these years, as I did not know that you two were old friends! Bruno was pretty much one of the only SM/Venice guys back *then* who was cool/nice to me. Dave Entropy too. Since 'backintheday' I've met a bunch of the old guard from the beach and nice to know all that noise is over. If we weren't such self-obsessed self-medicated territorial asses back then we'd have realized we had much more in common than not, as we do today. Keep after it, all of ya punks!!
At least most of ya grew as people
In ‘91or 92 I saw these crazy bastards at the azatlan theater in Denver, we walked around the corner and they were sitting outside their “tour bus” which was an old retirement home shuttle😂. We drank 40’s and smoked weed. El jefe was spray painting his name on equipment boxes. Kick ass show. Great memories. If I remember right it was lagwagon and ice burn opening. What a kick ass show
Wow, this is some clasic LA punk history. I was a LA punk in the 90s and heard so many stories. The funny thing is that I always thought NOFX were from San Jose!
Mike, we want longer podcasts like this one. Appreciate the content if it's short or long, though.
“They beat me so hard I ended up sober.” LOL.
Fat Mike started an epic punk band…then an epic record label…now he’s epic podcaster? Geez, save some for the rest of us 😝
I like that Fat Mike sobered up and is now interviewing all the other cali punkers that might remember what he forgot about the 80's. Institutionalized!
Great job Fat Mike long time fan and have loved the podcast since episode one keep it up man
Man this is cool as hell. I really appreciate this. Thanks Mike 👍
Good times thanks for the memories. RxCx and Bruno!
This podcast rules! Punk stories are crazy!

i'm sad now lol
I remember all you guys from the 80's those of us from East side punx from East Los Angeles were fans seeing no mercy at the Balboa theater and if I remember right nofx at the stardust or one of the venues in Hollywood shit there was a lot of places but this weekend I am going to your museum to check it out because someone one said that you had an exhibit of the 80's Latino back yard punk scene so i am interested in what you got on that my friend Jimmy works at razer cake magazine and is also interested
1st podcast I've seen so far...... Haven't even finished it yet. So fuckin happy I stumbled on this..... Excited
sorry to comment again, but you need more podcast episodes like this, old punks and stories, you been all around the world, and it's all about your guests and what they do and say that will drive you to expose some damn good stories

These podcasts are bad ass! Keep ‘‘em coming

Mike, I love you so much. I literally had a dream a dream the night before last that in which we were jamming. I hope that dream comes true one day...
It won’t
Don't listen to Hugh. In fact, don't listen to anyone with an anus pun for a name.
Anything is possible.
some good history here. funny stories
Being from the LA punk scene this is really cool to listen to. It's nice to know most of us are mellowed out now haahha somewhat
Thanks Brody for putting that up.
Anyone know how to spell the name of the artist that played the song at the end?
Love your podcasts! Also best intros ever!!
Mr. Fat,
Give me some stories of the triple rock.
RIP triple rock.
Some of the best shows ever at the Triple Rock!!... Or pre Triple rock seeing D4 in a dingy basement with leaking pipes and Paddy kept getting electrocuted by his bass, got naked and walked into the crowd mid song, also at The Foxfire, those small venues were the best, then First Ave for the CD release party for Midwestern Songs of the Americas!
I've seen many shows at the Triple Rock. It sucks they closed. We need another punk venue/bar for shows and hanging out. Anyone remember The Bomb Shelter? It was on Lake Street and Bloomington Ave back in the mid 90s. Lots of great punk shows there too.
I was happy to see The Dickies at Pat Smears with The Germs liitle club in Garden Grove! SAW the RAMONES THERE TOO tHANKS pAT!+
NIEGHBORHOOD WATCH!
Rick is the shit! Absolutely LOVE his art and the whole S.T. not fitting into any genre and finding there own way was always impressive to me!
🎵john beat some hippie to a pulp cuz having long hair was a mistake🎵 i love how mike made a song about that love that song
Like 11 min in is pure gold
Good shit. How did I not know Suicidal was a actual gang? Mike knows alot about So.Cal music history.
You should read the NOFX book it goes deep into the different gangs and how it affected the scene
Check out their book hepatitis bathtub when you get the chance, mike and the rest of NOFX talk about it way more. A lot of the stories he was asking them about are in it.
The NOFX book sounds good. There is lots of name dropping about the punk gangs in other books and online but hardly any real stories, let alone pictures.
There was a bunch of L.A hardcore gangs after the bigger bands at the time
you can really see mike acting like the little brother here. his attitude is completely different
Best punk podcast in the world!
What's the song at the end? Roz 1? Roz one? Ros 1?
Best podcast ever.
What was the song that played at the end?
Fat Mike mentioned Kurt "producing" that Melvins' album. I think it would be cool to hear you talk with King Buzzo. They both are icons of the underground. I'm sure they'd have a lot in common.
That punker that threw the bottle at the cops head…what that Jack from TSOL? lol
NOFX turned me onto Bad Religion and Pennywise and now my favorite band is ST. Helping me with my mental illness and inspiring my bass playing. fuckin love ST
I know, 2 year old vid, but I'm guessing Mike actually wore his bad religion t-shirt until it looked like that, but for us who doesn't wanna do that for 20 years, BR really should release a clone of that shirt. Awesome with the subtle, worn down logo.
I like the song at the end
“I’d rather beat up people than do drugs.” F’n classic.
Best podcast episode I've seen
Crazy. I'm from Detroit and never even been to Venice beach but I've known a few people who guttered it up there for a few years and heard stories about these 2. Awesome to see em on a podcast.
You're from Detroit I'm from NY two cities that started punk 🤘
