When they played, everyone watched, smiled and made positive comments. Not too many opening acts can garner that sort of attention. They had somthing unique...Chuck! Im happy to now be playing with Eric Walsh from Pour Habit. We've been jamming and have put together 22 songs to date. Looking to hit the studio at the end of February ...Cheers JB (formerly of Strung Out)
11:03 - SWINGIN' UTTERS are from Santa Cruz? Whoa...I always thought they were from San Francisco?! Oh well, good to know!👍 And yes, SU are quite awesome!!!
Fat was THE label all our friends bands wanted to be on! Never thought any of us would get there, but FatMike saw how amazing Jericho(smoke or fire) was, and snapped them up. And Joe still has that unique quality to his voice. Great video bro
WOW! I had know idea that Jericho became another band, my band Late Last Night from Southern Vermont played with them, our friends Blink Luck Music and Decade halloween of either 2000 or 2001 and they were so awesome, we all got the When The Battery Dies record and love it to this day! I am so excited to dig into their catalog Smoke or Fire! Other bands we were playing with around that time were Drexel, and Smackin Isaiah!
@@SkySplitterInk Did you guys play the GUNBOAT showcase near Amhearst? I used to see Jericho, BoxingWater, Mission Shifter, lock and Key, Chanticlear, etc almost every weekend. And Smackin Isaiah Is now A Wilhelm Scream and they Kill!
@@rickbrust7928 I dont think we ever got down there, but we definitely played with Lock and Key, Boxing Water and Jericho! Other bands I remember playing with were Big D, Kicked in the Head and our good buddies TIP.
Probably because they never toured or even new fat wreck bands or guys who knew fat Mike a lot of bands who are on the label mostly knew Mike before so that's probably why
Great video! Got into Fat Wreck bands back in the mid-90s and I've been a fan of their bands ever since! Those comps redefined music for me. Keep up the great content.
2020's releases were epic and diverse. Get Dead, PEARS, and Days n' Daze, all killer albums, dropping in one year--and what was such an insane fucking year--was amazing.
Had somebody hand me Honest Don's Welcome Wagon in 96 or 97 at the door at a show, possibly while I was seeing NOFX, and I cannot stress how unbelievably cool it was to get free music in a pre-napster, pre-limewire era of $12-15 CDs
Yes dude saw them in DC and walking out I was handed the honest dons welcome wagon which introduced me to mad caddies. They are one of my favorite bands now and I'm going to see them Sunday in Baltimore.
Fat Wreck Chords was the soundtrack of my youth. Hell, majority of my record and CD collection comes from Fat. And I still have dreams of having my band release something on Fat Wreck. It's a label that cares about its artists, and in the cut throat world of the music industry you don't see it often. You don't expect record labels like that to survive in a dog-eat-dog environment. Yet they have, and not just surviving, but evolving with the changing industry too whilst still being a straight up punk rock label.
Hell yeah, do a utters video, I still have my pink cassette of juvenile product. A Good Riddance video would be appreciated as well , they are one of my faves.
The Flatliners are probably my favorite non "legendary" roster member (especially their 3 run album: "The Great Awake", "Cavalcade" and "Dead Language")
Great video my guy, awesome to see a dedicated video to the label that makes up a huge chunk of my music library lol. I have a very similar experience as you, I discovered NOFX when I was 14, changes my life, and used Fat Wreck to discover other fantastic bands (like my favourite, No Use). It's really commendable that Mike has made the decision to stick with punk rock, even as music trends elsewhere, and they still release all their albums on vinyl with colour variants, instead of just submitting to the digital age. If you haven't already, I highly recommend the latest releases from Useless ID and Get Dead (State is Burning and Dancing With the Curse), they're some of my favourite newer Fat Wreck bands, and those albums are absolutely killer! Look forward to the next video!
Hey thanks for the video, I am a Canadian representative for the label here in Toronto. A lot of bands stay at my place while touring. The latest being Get Dead on Sept 10 2022, They were the craziest group of guys I've had here by far. Let me know if you'd like a care package. Thanks, Jordan. P.S We have parted way's with any thing Sturgeon related before I got this position.
If you do ANY video on the importance of punk labels, you NEED to do one on Profane Existence out of MN. They had a distro where they made shirts, patches, had a newspaper like magazine and of course music they put out themselves. They where very important in putting out the 1st wave of US Crust Punk in the late 80's, early 90's along with bands from all over the world. They barely made money as they sold their records as cheap as possible. Another thing that was cool was that they would print on the albums "Pay no more than.." and you will never find ONE copyright symbol or warning on any of their music. They put out some of the most influential records of all time. Nausea, Doom, Aus Rotten, Destory! just to name a few.
fun fact: I named the Fat Club compiltion after sending it in with a contest they ran, though they sent me a Fat hoodie, I never received credit in the liner. I still have the hoodie at least
Heck yeah! Great video, I am stoked to get another one. I love what you do man and I would for sure want to see a video about swingin' utters, those guys rock.
Bracket is probably my favorite band overall from fat wreck, and I love the story that fat Mike was also a big fan of them and frustrated about how lazy they were. That’s probably why I vibe with them so much tbh
Great video man! Loved the whole record label retrospective thing, would love to see more stuff like that about labels like Hopeless, Visible Noise, Drive-Thru, Earache, Epitaph and Bridge 9 for example
Hey, cool video! You forgot to mention Screw 32 - Under Influence Of Bad People, great but also underrated records and a band. My favorite Fat releases are mostly 90's classics like Lagwagon, NUAN, Good Riddance, Snuff, Guns N Wankers, Strung Out, Propagandhi and The Longes Line EP.
I am from the same area that Snuff are from, Norther West London. Apparently they started gigging around Crickelewood / Kilburn which is a short 10 min drive away from Hendon and I lived in th middle of those areas, so couldn't believe it when I found out where at least the drummer singer / drummer Duncan is from.
"E" is for everything from Bracket is a great Record and of course the 90's are Incredible for putting out so more great Bands...Frenzal Rhomb, Screw 32, Tilt, Hi-Standard etc. ...
I'm huge fan of Banner pilot, but I would say that most underrated band from Fat Wreck is Swingin' utters. There are also great bands such as 88 fingers Louie, Enemy you, Western addiction, Frenzal Rhomb, American steel, Mad caddies, Get dead, Dead to me, The Flatliners...
Fuckin Loved Swingin Utters back In middle school and high school when I was massively obsessed with Fat Wreck & Punk itself. Jack! Great video once again. I'm always amazed at how much footage and data you're able to pull on these videos especially with the early 90's content. The fact the most of these records only list the first name of band members on records must make things difficult at times 😆 I'd say the smartest thing Fat ever did in the beginning was put out the $3 sampler CD's. In an age way before social media and streaming services these releases did wonders to promote the Fat family better than any other label. Keep up the solid work dude! 🍻

Great job 👏 got into fat and epitaph in high school freshman year 97 what a great time to be alive ❤
