For borders, it's usually medium consistency. The consistency needed is different for the various types of piping.
    Writing, Drop String, etc.--softer consistency
    Borders--medium consistency
    Flowers, Ruffles, Figure Piping--firmer consistency

this video is so helpful!...I have currently completed Wilton's cake decorating class pt.1 at Michael's and soon to start pt.2....I took part of this course over 10 yrs ago when it was offered at JC Penneys and I remember this course and the instructor being more thorough back then.....I do remember spending time on the various borders and designs.....now Wiltons has broken the course down so that the students have to continue to spend money buying the kit and supplies for all 4 courses....and kit #2 has some of the same tips and materials that were already purchased in kit #1 and not to mention they want the student to buy the book for each course as well......I feel that most of my knowledge will be gained through RUclips this time around....lucky for me that I can remember a little of what I learned before...I am considering whether or not I should continue....I can buy the stuff and teach myself using your video and many others.....Thanks for sharing!!

I have found Wilton to be aggressive trying to push their products as well!! Even their videos on you tube try to get you to purchase unnecessary products. Good luck with your classes, perhaps you could find another placed that provides the service. You shouldn't have to purchase things you already have! Contact Wilton an make sure they are actually apart the company.

They've probably just never seen this border before--most decorators get stuck in a rut. This border looks beautiful and elegant or both round and square cakes when done properly. If you go to our FaceBook page, we have a Craftsy class on borders (link in About section).

Unfortunately, it takes quite a bit of red food color to make red icing. And the red color has glycerin or something similar in it and that thins the icing. If you were making your own icing, we would suggest making a firmer icing to begin with (less water); but since you're using store-bought icing, you can make the color extra deep then add powdered sugar to firm it up.

very pretty...keep watching it so I can reproduce it at work. I have a question. I have to make deep red icing close to crimson. By the time I add enough red coloring the icing breaks down and is runny. Do you have some ideas to remedy my runny icing problem that doesn't dilute the color.

Unfortunately other icings do not work as well (hold the detail) as a decorator's buttercream. You can always frost a cake with your preferred icing and pipe the borders with buttercream.

I was moved from "Baker" to "Cake Decorator" apprentice. First I was only trusted to frost cupcakes (the same swirl with a star-tip for every cupcake). Now slightly more technical jobs. Recently given 18, 6" cheesecakes to decorate for our case (and for backstock), told: "be creative, but make them fancy". I tried this border for one, and it looked okay, but I was getting weird looks from the "real" decorators... Any videos for borders on round cakes? Maybe this one looks best on a square cake?

    Hi Roland,
Thank you for this video! This is my fav border, but I'm def struggling with it. I lose track of my ups n downs. I noticed when you are applying the border fast, you sort of loop-de-loo, is that the secret? My girls are trying this too and ol' mom is getting her butt kicked!! HAHA
