- So finally we can reveal the engine swap on our 2001 NIssan S15 Silvia. We didn't actually know what it would be until we landed in Group D and Darren McNamara pulled the cover off his new idea for a cheap 350bhp engine swap for any Silvia, be it an S14, 180sx, S12 or S13. We will let you guys be the judge of weather or not this will be the next big thing!

You should talk to Luke Fink, he’s going to be at drift games and some other events in the US in November and December. He’s been talking with the other boys in Australia about the lack of inexpensive cars and engines to get new people into the sport. If this works out you could work it on both sides of the word.
Bring a better cheaper turbo 4 cylinder and you could help the drifting world.

It's tricky to not get caught up in the whole preserving an S15 / OEM is the way to go but this is great. Good power, good reliability and affordable? What's not to like?
As Darren said, these cars should be fun and this is exactly that. Looking forward to seeing this complete
If Darren builds his mounts so suit the Altezza box with a spec r s15 drive shaft (spec r run j160) could offer a full off the shelf conversion kit where people don’t have to get or buy a modded shaft that would be game changer. Currently doing a beams swap in my s14 and found the s15 shaft will work with out having to get something modded or made.

I believe this was in the Tom’s Castrol Supra when they finally beat the GTR’s back in the 90’s. It was a much different engine internally but same platform.

I thought it'd be a VAG 1.8t 20v, obviously not 350bhp stock but a bigger turbo, injectors and some cheap rods will easily get you there. Probably not been done in a Silvia before either

Lots of guys in the mr2 world used to do 5sgte builds - (3sgte head on a 5sfe bottom) and made really good power with them. Some really cool options that are less popular!
@@krisbuck2165 the 5sgte is gonna be a lot more work, but its definatly alot cheaper than an SR
5s is not an engine option outside the states

Altezza's aswell as the Celica's and MR2's had 3SGE's. They also had a Beams model, Redtop in the Celica SS2/SS3 and MR2, and Blacktop in the Rs200 Altezza. They made 200hp. I've a gen 6 SS3 beams Celica and tbh, the beams 3sge is one of the best engines ever made. Sad how half of them are gone now in Ireland, but im glad I saved mine. Love the idea lads, hope it all goes well, I'll look forward to seein it finished 😁
I like it and im exited. Also curious how it would sound. jdm was all about cheap and fun cars early 2000's but the market is horrible now this brings back the essence a bit
Think old school rally burble with 7200rpm range. Is how it would sound. Exhaust dependant!

Going to be great like everything Darren at Group D does. Should paint match the engine and engine bay to match the group d colours since your keeping the exterior the same. Also so there is not question about who did the swap and can push future clients to Group D.
It needs a Beams cylinder head from an Altezza.
Bonus is the intake manifold will suit rear wheel drive.
Didn't expect this! I was thinking you were going to go for a Saab B234 then I thought about a Mercedes M111 with a turbo instead of the kompressor. Another crazy/cheap one would be some sort of VW engine like a 1.8t or even a V5 or V6 with a turbo.
Was thinking the same, 3sge does not seem so crazy tbh...
I thought it was going to be a 5 cylinder Audi lump, love the idea behind the Toyota swap, can’t wait to see the next video 👊🏻

3S-GTE engine was used in the Castrol Toms Toyota Supra and that was only a 2.0-litre too.
Sounds class was expecting a boxer or something but this is better

The 3SGTE was Toyota's Motorsport engine in the 90's, the famous Castrol Supra wasnt a 2J ever, it was the 3S
Haha, I called it, but this has to have been done before? Toyota ran this engine in the Tom’s Castrol Supra so someone had to have put it in a Silvia. I love it, this is a cool project!!

@@krisbuck2165 I've had a load of and built 3sgte engines, there obliviously more powerful, it's the same engine only turbo charged. I didn't say the 3sge was a better, engine. I said it was an underrated engine

Somebody is doing a beams 3sg swap in an s15 in California, but I don't know if he is going turbo or fully built n.a. The beams is only good as a fully built n.a. and they are not good turbo due to the internals. The turbo 3sgte is already good for boosted application, with its forge rods and pistons.
We going to need way into detail on the transmission and clutch set up I got that motor in my Camry
No way good engine I had a Celica st205 that had that engine didn't know it had them capabilities tho can't wait to see the end results

2- how much it costs when its fully completed and rolling out the shop door tuned and ready for the road !! really cant wait too see the progress on this !!!

If going with 3sge, why not a beams 3sge? Same engine, but with vvti and even comes 6spd and rwd. Plus it just looks better out of the box than the older 3sge's. Either way i'm looking forward to this build series!

Beams engine and trans is hella cheap I paid $1200us for mine. With link ecu make 200whp no mods turbo it and have 300whp that revs to 8700k

@@Joel_Harris 300whp you will be fine with the high compression but they make a kit to get low compression

K24 would have been my bet. Probably just about as cheap, and better all round motor. Alloy block too where as the 3sge is cast iron.

Tidbit about the trans that I think wasnt covered correctly or clearly, the "j160" of the altezza/is200 is effectively the same trans as the s15 6speed. They both fall under the Aisin AZ6 model range although the gear ratios are a bit different. Mx5 6speed, rev1 rx8 6speed, s15, altezza/j160, brz/frs/ft86 are all effectively the same "AZ6" box. Great choice with the 3s platform though especially rev1 head intake ports can be made massive. Cheers guys
Those gearboxes are one family, but every of them is different to fit.
1. Different bolt pattern
3. Different ratios
@@aaabbb9953 the center section of the trans can be interchanged but yes the bellhousinga and tail housings are different, different tail shaft lengths, shift rod lengths etc. 4th gear is fixed to the input shaft so you are stuck with whatever gear ratio the required input shaft is associated with but they can be hybrided. I had built a couple s1 rx8 front mx5 rear hybrid boxes for a 13b powered NB mx5 back in the day. It ended up being a hodgepodge of gear ratios due to the required parts but interesting none the less
