- We complete a full engine conversion on our 1989 E30 BMW 320i. We bought this JDM model with a questionable history, including an engine that was broken so in this episode we replace it with something EPIC!

You know, I can never think of a good challenge when it's time to Choose The Challenge, but this Bmer makes me think, when you said 'skids.' 'Ha, wait a minute. How about a *grip* challenge? ' Lateral G's, maybe hill course? (Also how much does that *weigh* compared to the stock engine? I don't care much about 'purity' but I do care a lot about balance. :) )

@@gienkollo I have one of these in Australia, and yes - they're not known for rust here (at least the series 2 - like this one). The body galv is pretty good for the era.
Moog: "There is no replacement for displacement"
Also Moog: *buys a Lotus*
Also a 'positive displacement' supercharger like the roots/twinscrew/vane etc is literally a direct replacement for displacement.
Like, a turbo or centrifugal SC need to spin up to create pressure and so they usually work best at higher rpm, where low rpm and straight off idle they do very little.
Positive displacement SCs though push the same volume of air every revolution regardless of how fast the engine is spinning, which makes them feel virtually the same as if you magically increased the capacity.

Laurence is a good friend of mine, and way back when I was still living in Sydney we started filming in his shop. He has built a V10 E46 M3, V8 MX-5s, supercharged Gallardos and S54 swapped E30s. He does it for the love of it, and in some of the videos we made he talks about how he got started. Some people are complaining that the MCM boys are taking the easy route by using off the shelf parts, but Laurence and his team put in a huge effort to build up that catalogue to make this possible. I'm glad to see the MCM boys sharing that enthusiasm with Brintech.
I was hoping for a S54 in this build.
Very well said. So many people completely disregard the amount of time and effort that goes into building the type of parts which allow non-native engines to plug in simply for the next guy to come along.

@@MrSluby In the UK, the BMW E30 is flat rate tax no matter whatever engine, post 2000 it got more cpmplicated, for post-2006 it got brutal.

Swap gearbox, put LS engine there. Basically, just keep the chassis.
these LS swaps are also soooo seen thing... LS swap everything. makes me annoyed.. :D i would keep the original engine or maybe swap m10 and modify it a lot, (same engine they had in F1 cars back in late 80's and had about 1000hp and lasted pretty long)
With that rust in critical areas, are they keeping the chassis? Fishplating the rails etc.

You have no idea how happy it makes me to see parts being cleaned and painted before you move on, I have hated watching many other builders pull everything to pieces and then bolt crappy inspected parts back on, it makes absolutely no sense to have it that far apart and not finish everything properly.
Would've loved to see the M5 V10 swapped in there but this is fine too.

@@juststeve5542 You'd be surprised how you can package a turbo in there. If Al (Turbo Yoda) were handy, he'd tell you it can be done. These days, more people are putting turbos on LS motors than superchargers. Turbocharging in the modern world is just so much easier. I remember back in the carbureted, non-computerized world of turbocharging, it was an expensive, finicky operation. With modern turbos, fuel injection, computer controlled everything, and a great aftermarket for all of that, it has become relatively trivial.

I was kind of wishing too, hell could have looked into a Barra too. Just kind of sick watching LS swaps as its just a quick and dirty swap meanwhile in the UK its not a thing so it'd be nice to see something other than an LS. You know what could be cool VR (Nissan one not VW) engine swap well have fun if you continue watching cause I already know the whole process of swapping call me if they twin turbo charge it cause that would be a little cool.

I bought an ls1, ecm and harness from these guys like 5-6 years ago for a patrol conversion i was doing. All the guys at the shop were awesome to deal with and talk to, good to see them in a video!
You guys have come so far in so many ways. I'm glad you have stayed together through the thick and thin. I'm sure it hasn't been easy all the time, but it's obvious there's a lot of bro-love between you. The whole cast seems to be the same. Great job, keep up the great content and music.

Hell yeah, I just found the end video to the build and seeing the intricate little mods done so that everything aligns perfectly. I must say I like the little mods that are fitted with the new baffled oil sump and oil filter relocation kit as it well and truly helps with ease of access for minor servicing. The classic rtv gasket sealant internet joke cracked me up 🤣

For some reason, I never considered an LS engine. I assumed you would put another BMW engine in. Not sure how I feel about it yet 🤔

@@Intrepid17011 I agree, they should have kept the BMW soul and just put a 4.4L V8 in it, damn you can even fit a 5.4 V12 from a 750Li without much issues, and it is quite inexpensive too... There are a two dudes near my home town that put a 4.0L V8 Turbo, pushing over 800hp at the wheels on an E30, with plans to make even more power in the future... Fuck PuRiTy when you don't have a soul.

Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. Was fully expecting the JZ, RB, or N55 swap, the LS swap made me grin.
I was hoping to see a barra swapped BMW since I can't do it easily here in the US.

I’m digging the music on this episode! Also, a little future headache saver: get some of those heat shield boots for the spark plug wires. Aftermarket headers can make them extra crispy. Looks great fellas!

Ah the LS! My guess (and hopes) was a BMW 6 cylinder with turbo! Still looking forwards to see this thing rip though! Love me some E30
I was hoping they were going to turbo the m20 before watching the first video. I know they’re restricted on power but I absolutely love the engine itself and they’re fairly bulletproof. With a turbo conversion they can get up to like 350-400hp reliably too

True, I was hoping for a new BMW M-series engine. But I think it's expensive and they went for the cheap reliable option. I really love the sound compared to the usual boring LS :(

I am so excited to see them do this build.. I know its about as common as Moog making a bodily fluids joke, but that doesn't make it any less exciting to me.
I've always been a big fan of tuners and never really paid much attention to anything muscle related. However, within the past few years owning a fiesta, which pushes a tiny turbo to 27psi with an inadequate cooling system from the factory, I've found myself curious about reliable v8 swaps and the rumble in the jungle (not into the fiesta lol, im not a fool). Its just that the idea of a bulletproof 400hp motor in a lightweight chassy is awesome, so to see this as the next MCM project choice strikes a new chord with me and I'm really enjoying myself watching this.
These guys always have a way of helping me expand my horizons. Whether it is through their awesome attitude, weird selection of an obscure JDM nugget, or just doing something simple because its fun, I always finish an episode wanting to go work on my car and try something new.
Fine cars - we race them in a production series. Simple to work on, don't break down much (compared to lots of modern cars). Just a word of caution: Don't just chuck parts, please keep them stick them on the e30zone or ebay to get them back in the parts pool. Stuff is getting rarer and prices are going north. The original parts you sell can offset a significant chunk of your upgrade bill. I sold loads of parts I didn't need to go racing, paid for the car twice over!

@@jessesward9429 'Purple tag' refers to an E46 Clubsport steering rack (part 6 755 067 ). It's got 3 turns lock-to-lock, vs standard 4. It feels *very* different, and much much better.
I put the zhp yellow tag as well as the solid steering guibo in my 95 m3.

Exactly! I was like: bmw swap specialists, it has to be an n54. Then I saw the LS and something inside me has died. E30s are getting extremely rare and expensive, so LS swap is ruining that poor car imo. I dont’t hate LS, but a 6 cylinder or a bmw v8 would make the car way cooler.
@@Filip_4130 I was also expecting the SB65! For me had to be the N54/55 or the SB65!
Both make much less power (about 300 hp vs 420 hp) than the stock LS3 though, and the 54 is also heavier than the LS. Every dollar spent on an N54 would have made more power on an LS3
The LS3 with stock internals is good to 650 hp, which is about as much as is possible due to the block strength for the n55 IIRC. With upgraded internals, the LS3 block will do 800ish
Getting that kind of power out of the N54 is possible but extremely expensive.
IMO if you just want a really fast sleeper... The same budget will go faster in an LS than probably anything else.
@@dtroy15 Well, the n54 can make 650hp on the stock internals. But you have to replace stuff around the engine. Idk how much that has to cost, but imo it's worth it. An i6 in a bmw will be much more of a sleeper anyway, even a 4cyl.
And the e30 is a very light car, there are people who put a heavy af 2jz in it, but a light but powerfull 4 cyl is a lot better suited in those cars for the track, even bmw m sport race them with their 4 cyl (s14) engine.

When I pulled the sound insulation of my E30s firewall, I also discovered some swiss cheese metal. Only rust on the whole car. Also should have swapped out the stock steering rack. They're pretty slow. Z3 or purple tag e46 is where it's at

It's not the LS that is annoying. It's the cult following fanbois of the LS that are annoying. As a rotary ran I don't like when people LS swap an RX-7. But on the other hand I can certainly appreciate that a lot of RX-7s have been saved from the crusher this way. In countries where LSs are common it is a cheap and relatively straight forward solution for people who don't have the bank for rotary builds.
It was a disappointing choice
I almost cried when I sold my 89 E30 earlier this year. It sometimes you have to make sacrifices. The mods I did were mostly suspension and brakes. The 2.5 isn’t a monster engine but it sounds good, chirps on the corners and goes fast enough for me. Speaking of corners, there are better cars for straight roads but few better for twisty ones.
I sold my 325i e30 over 10 years back. I miss my E30 too

The sound deadening on the E30 firewall is also a water sponge.
Mine, which I converted to a 1UZ-FE, was much worse.

seen an ls1 for 4k ish and a ls3 for 7k on ebay. still, not a common engine here on a quick glance
Fuel costs prevent large displacement V8's. We are more a v6, inline 6 and highly strung 4 banger kinda country. TBF i'm happy with that, v8's are boring. If you can't make power with a v8 then you shouldn't be near an engine but getting power from 4 banger and not blowing it take at least some skill.

@Cayleb Mladenovic it was a Holden from the 1970"s, yes a newer one would have an ls but this one was an old roundy round racecar with a gen 1 small block

Oh look, rust underneath? Shock horror. I LOVED my E36 but had constant problems with suspension and alignment from buying it. It turned out the rear subframe had rusted so bad it was hanging on by a thread and the seller didn't tell me/know. Great fun though, so glad you doing this!

I was expecting a Barra to keep it straight 6. I wish they would do something with that engine. LS is so common everywhere, but Barra is so unique to Australia.
@@JacobScherer it’s Barra not Berra and yes they are more unique LS engines just put our way more power with little mods and they sound 100x better. I would prefer a Barra over a Holden engine purely because Barra’s are build to last and take a beating
