Anyone remember when Matt thought winches were a waste of time and weight? Now he uses them all the time!
Kinetic rope is all we need.. 😆
Just like the Banana, we have seen the evolution of Matt.
I think he used to think the same thing about safety chains on small trailers to......
Yes that winch shows it’s worth the weight… Sure makes some well controlled recoveries 👍🏼
I use my winch almost everyday. Great for pull cars up on trailer.
the Rudicon geometry is so sick, really impressed with Rudy's skills and design so far
And Matt still does not use gloves when handling steel woven winch cables.
Check out his new channel if you haven’t already
@@georgeweisbrod1876 Pretty sure that's a synthetic line, not steel...
@@AndrewAMartin don't think so. Look at the way winch line lays on ground. Doesn't lay in lump when dropped on ground. Just wish they would use glove. @@georgeweisbrod1876 It's definitely synthetic. I must have heard Matt say "Freedom Winch Line" a hundred times by now.
Impressive recovery on the Momentum 5th wheel? Absolutely! 50,000 pounds? Might be a bit of a stretch. We have a 45' triaxle Fuzion toy hauler. Our tow vehicle is a diesel F-350 long bed dually. They run across the scales together (empty) at 25,200. Just sayin'. Absolutely hooked on your vids, though! 👍
That’s one thing about living in the Canadian rust belt… Once you put a nut on the bottom of your vehicle it generally seizes in place within a few days and getting it back off is the real challenge!😂
Meh a BFH, some heat, and a lot of cursing and WD40 will do it. That’s the good thing about being in the desert southwest is we don’t have rust, our cars will go till the engine fails.
What about the nut behind the wheel?🇨🇦

Between you and Paul and Robby, that's all I watch after working all night, and my go to to relax after work
I have to agree with your wife; why on earth would you want to spend all day outside in your favorite truck/rig working with your hands and helping people for good money and great memories? Why on EARTH would you want to do THAT?!

Hi Matt and the entire family (crew) We were in Hurricane Utah last Friday on our way to Gunnison Colorado. We stopped by your shop unfortunately you all were not there However we did meet Ed and Robert. We took a picture with Ed in buy your trailer. The women in the office were friendly. I was looking to buy a couple t-shirts off line glad I didn't. Waited to get them right from your office. We were a little bummed we didn't get to meet you all. Well our luck changed. We were in Green River Utah and Rudy Trevor and the Rudicon were fueling up so we did meet them. Awesome guys. We will definitely wear out Matt's Off Road Recovery T-shirts with pride. @@JH-tc3yu not really probably 22-25k lb trailer and 8k+ lb truck, so at least 30k lbs but nowhere near 50k lbs.
@@JH-tc3yu dDon't loose sleep over that horrible misinformation. If you had any idea about physics you would understand how the weight changes when you start pulling it up the hill and in a sand or gravel. Your comment "Gotta be the dumbest comment I've ever seen"
@@piotrtrocki3842 It’s obvious you don’t understand physics. The weight doesn’t magically increase when going up a hill.
@@alleng7947 it's the force required to pull the car up the hill, not the weight you should've understood what I meant. you can pull 2000 lbs car on a flat road, but you cannot lift it, get it? i don't know how else i can explain it. work on your IQ. Get it out of the single digit zone. The amount of force required to pull 50,000lbs on a flat road could equal the amount of force needed to pull 30,000lbs up the hill depending on the angle. Have you heard about vectors?
@@piotrtrocki3842 That whole setup STILL doesn’t weigh 30,000 lbs. You’re trying to rationalize an incorrect title. Nobody is thinking of force or Newtons or anything like that. I’m pretty sure he just thinks the trailer weighs heavier than it does. Let’s use your argument, the weight never changes. The force that’s acted upon it changes depending on the circumstances. If you move 50 lbs you moved 50 lbs. If you pushed 50 lbs up a hill would you tell someone you pushed 50 lbs up a hill or that you pushed 100 lbs? Your example of pulling and lifting a car is a poor one. Completely different than what’s going on in this video. You’re talking about comparing a gradual increase in force to move something forward and straight instant force to move static weight straight vertical. Moving 20,000 lbs up an incline comparable to this one is still easier than moving 50,000 lbs on a flat surface. Go pull a trailer and tell me I’m lying. And for the record a 42 ft 3 axle Momentum like this one is about 15,000 lbs unloaded. Assuming he has a RZR or something in the back let’s call it about 17,000 on the high end. Truck weighs about 9,000 so he’s probably looking at 26,000 lbs. In no way would that incline add an extra 24,000 lbs of weight equivalent to the force needed to move it. Towing and recovery for 13 years and have been transporting RVs for the last 4 1/2 years and also certified RV tech. Quit talking down to people dude.

Matt, empty weight on that Momentum is around 16,000lbs. If he is loaded figure 21,000+ and the Dodge fully is going to be close to 12,000 it's self. = Big winch and shackles every time. By the way my to vehicle is a Volvo 780 HDT for our Grand Design Momentum 398MR. Weighing at 28,000lbs trailer and truck close to 30,000lbs. Just ordered the biggest rope yankum has and a 18,000lbs Badland winch for the truck.

I think you meant 50,000 rather than 30,000 for your combo.
@@grantdavis5992 Damn autocorrect 😂😭🤣
Your numbers are still way off. A RZR only weighs 1800 lbs so how are you figuring there’s 5000 lbs of added weight? The truck only weighs maybe 9000. My 2WD is right about 7800 on a scale. Honestly I’d say the Momentum is closer to 15,000 but thats splitting hairs. Let’s stick with the 16,000 for the trailer, let’s say 2000 for the RZR and probably some fuel in the filling station. With miscellaneous cargo you’re probably gonna look at about 19,000 total weight of the trailer. Add that with the 8000 or 9000 lb truck and you’re about 28,000 lbs. Don’t know where you’re getting 28,000 from on your trailer. Grand Design has dry weight listed at 15,000.
Weights way off but good pull
I have the same set up pretty much f450 voltage trip pop trip axel loaded with a can am, ktm full water all fuel tanks full. Extra tank in the truck full on a cat scale I was 38,987

The Rudicon sure has been through some changes. Looks like you have finished. What a Jeep!
Oh, he's not done yet, maybe 7/8 dun. If you haven't heard yet, you can see it on his own channel, Rudy's somethin somethin somethin(?) Lol
3:56 That's the problem with _turbo_ diesels. The instant, low-rev torque of a simple diesel can be rather nice when it comes on immediately as you push the pedal. It's the pause as the turbo spools up, then the abrupt extra push, that really messes with trying to keep on the edge of traction.
2007 owners gmc duramax suggest shifting to 2nd gear to reduce torque and increase HP when taking off in muddy and sandy areas
Modern turbo diesels make full torque at right around 1800-2000 rpms there is no "instant" on off switch with the power. It is extremely smooth and predictable power.
@@SkinnySkinch I'm not talking about what revs the torque is made - this is about boost lag, where you're waiting for the intake tract to pressurize, which can take a second or two. No turbo engine makes that torque the instant you press on the loud pedal - some fancy vehicles may even use a form of anti-lag, but even those only reduce the lag, they don't eliminate it. :-)
@@aussiebloke609 Every diesel now has a variable geometric turbo that starts building boost a lot lower so it’s a lot less turbo lag. That was getting stuck no matter what was pulling it.
Is it me or has Lizzie developed a certain confidence in front of the camera in recent weeks? Perhaps the big 2-0 has some effect. Very good.
Also Rubicon seems at least 2/3 dun.
Wow, the Rudycon is really flexing nicely. Loved seeing that climb.

After watching Matt’s Off Road Recovery for over a year, I have come to the conclusion that I will NEVER buy a razor or other make of OHV.
Never clear to me whether they break a lot because they're fragile, they break a lot because there's so many of them out there (so if 1% of vehicles break, then 1% of Razors is a lot), or they break a lot because they're kind of beginner vehicles - so they kind of people who buy them might tend to break them.
You're using the ford theory. People make fun of ford for being unreliable without realizing the reason you see so many more fords on the side of the road is because there ARE so many more fords ON the road. The more of something there is the more you will see/hear about issues even if the overall % of issues is similar to other brands.
@@SkinnySkinch Owned a Ford once. Of the 10 cars I’ve owned, it was the only one to break down and leave me stranded on the side of the road. Won’t buy another. But I get your point.
@@sar4x474 would you mind interpreting? Like what ford you bought? There’s always a bad apple in every bunch. This annoying generalization of “ohhh hurrr durrr I bought one and it sucked hurrr durrr”
@@paullambert2668 Because people who have no idea what they’re doing go out and whiskey throttle it all day and night. Nah, they’re definitely not beginner vehicles. Love the channel, been watching for a long time now! Funny how a 9,000 pound truck and 21,000 lb GVWR trailer adds up to 50,000 lbs. Not sure where they are getting the extra 20k from. Regardless that's a very heavy load for the banana and Ram to pull up that hill!
Agreed. I have a very similar set up and combined weight is around 30-32k depending on how I’m loaded for the trip. Matt has a little click bait going on his thumbnail.
Uphill on soft gravel counts for some additional.
@@larrybe2900 GCW and pulling force are completely separate. I'm assuming they were claiming 50k lbs truck and trailer weight combined. With an 11,400lb trailer and a 1,500 lb tongue weight on flat pavement, the pulling force on the hitch ball from my testing has only been around 2,000lbs under full acceleration in 4wd with a 2017 GMC 3500 Duramax. Yes they are slightly uphill and in gravel, but their pulling force was maybe around 4k lbs max.
@@EngineAdventures You sir get it. Those trailers are actually about 14,000-15,000 lbs unloaded but other than that you’re right on the money.
@@GMbowtie350 Yeah this one is a 3 axle, and giving them the benefit of the doubt the heaviest triple axles that I see at the RV shows are in the 21k GVWR range. Is it a bad idea if it works? Weird trivia detail: I just replaced my tie rod ends and the old ends had castle nuts and cotter pins, but the new ones only had nuts with nylon inserts. Decided to put locktite on, just in case. Thanks Matt!
No castle nuts?? Nylock nuts can loosen. I've experienced that myself. So, loctite is a must.
Lacking castle nuts suggests the tie rods also lack holes for cotter pins. I bet the replacement items are NOT factory, and NOT from a top notch supplier like TRW.
Car makers have been using nylon lock nuts for years. They work just fine. Though they are supposed to be one time use.
@@timhurst1813 I have never seen Nylocks used in structural, safety-critical applications, such as tie rods
Also, in this specific instance, if the manufacturer uses castle nuts, I question if they would approve an aftermarket manufacturer making the change.
@@gregparrott hmmm. Not gonna get in a pissing match about it but as a mechanic I see them every day on tierods and ball joints.
@@timhurst1813 I defer to a mechanic. Can you identify for current Chevy, Ford, Ram, and Toyota pickups, which use Nylocs and which use Castellated nuts?
