"The past tempts us, the present confuses us, and the future frightens us. And our lives slip away, moment by moment, lost in that vast, terrible in-between." The older I get, the more this resonates!
If you ever go back and rewatch season 2, you'll notice people wearing Ranger uniforms wandering around in the background for most of this season up to this point...
Londo and G'Kar both believed that there was no way to live in peace with the other. Both were proven wrong and then right in this episode. True tragedy.
Also can we appreciate how eager G'Kar was to let go of his burning hatred? He jumped at the opportunity to make peace the moment he saw a chance for it...and then he got stabbed in the back.
Almost like a career change. G’Kar grew up a victim and has known nothing but hate and a thirst for revenge and yet when he hears of the Emperor’s wish to apologize, he doesn’t even question it. I think G’Kar felt morally and spiritually obligated to keep up the fight because peace was never an option. When it suddenly seemed like there was a chance for peace, G’Kar leapt at it with the trust of a child.
Emperor Turhan and Prime Minister were named after the actors who played them (in a casting coup, as they were both HUGE in Hollywood in years past), Turhan Bey and Malachi Throne.
This episode won the very prestigious Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, beating out "Apollo 13", "Toy Story", "12 Monkeys", and the Deep Space Nine episode "The Visitor". In a later episode (not a spoiler) you'll see this Hugo Award trophy on someone's desk for a few seconds.
Shadow vessels don't actually cloak, they phase in and out of hyperspace. They also don't use jumpgates as their jump method is more efficient.
And so it begins ......
"That sounded like telepaths that sound", I never actually thought of it, but yes, indeed that sound usually means something has to do with telepathy, and those two girls next to the emperor were telepaths. They screamed in their minds because they saw the emperor collapsing, and instantly the prime minister found out about it from the other two. Very good catch!
The talk about the research into telekinesis so that a Psi could 'squeeze and artery in someone's brain, or heart' mentioned earlier in the series.
He's getting this excited over this episode. Season 3 is going to blow his mind. If you know you know exactly which episodes. 😂 Poor guys head will explode on camera.
Just wait until "The Long, Twilight Struggle"...
This is a big turning point for G'Kar, too. He was blinded by hatred, betrayed by Londo, and now...he won't have as much time for hatred or revenge. He will have to evolve.
Great, a happy reaction to a great episode. After the disaster that was today's reaction at the B5ftft channel, I needed to see someone being happy while watching a great episode of B5. This is it. Really big episode, Londo is becoming even more a villain than he was before with the whole quadrant 37 situation at the end of season 1. Emperor Turhan was indeed a good representation of the Centauri gene pool, and Refa is the opposite.
I gave up on them when they doubled down on any message that wasn't delivered in a fourth wall breaking manner being "accidental" and unintended.
Petro- this was a palate cleanser after that mess
@@MrDdaland indeed
@@elaine_of_shalott6587 they pay too much attention to how B5 is not the real world and just a show instead of paying attention that B5 is trying to mimic the real world but in a different setting. They look at the production quality and the "acting" and miss out on key moments of the show that would help them answer questions that they're having.
@@elaine_of_shalott6587 I'm bugged by the hatred for Franklin - I guess it's easy if you watch the twee nonsense of Star Trek to forget that people are imperfect and may not get everything right
"How will this end?"
"In fire."
Your enthusiasm for this series is so brilliant to watch. I'm an OG fan from the 90s and I've watched the series a dozen times, and it's so great to see someone enjoying it for the first time!
Just a couple "notes'- nothing to spoil you though...
The Emperor was portrayed by a Gentleman named Turhan Bey. He was fairly well known in the 40's, and just happened to be in Hollywood for an awards show when JMS was casting. Everyone in the cast really liked him, and were rather pissed when JMS killed him off
BTW- neither the Emperor or Prime Minister was named, so it was decided that they were to be Emperor Turhan & PM Malachi
They cut a scene a bit short that showed Londo questioning whether he should go with Refas plan
The telepaths seen here are different than what we've seen here. Closer to what I've seen in Twins- they are interconnected with each other- not with anyone else
I think the 4 telepaths are something similar to what JMS did in Sense8.
@@Petrosman Now, that's a thought.
FYI - the names Turhan and Malachi were indeed not mentioned in this episode but were soon canonized in later episodes.
You are correct about the Ranger. He did play the Federal Marshal in Lost.
The Ranger you recognised is played by Fredric Lehne (aka Fredric Lane) and he's appeared in numerous TV shows including *Lost* and *Supernatural* .
Specifically, the yellow eyed demon who killed Sam and Dean's mom Mary in Supernatural.
The facial acting of Stephen Furst as Vir is just great. Not a word, still a whole story.
So much is going on here. Poor G'Kar.
How do you like Lord Refa?
Aaaaand .... Sinclair! "Stay close to the Vorlon - and watch out for Shadows - They move when you're not looking"
BTW I now have a tendency to use the phrase "Hello old friend" more than I did before I watched this.
This is what JMS calls a "WHAM!" episode. I have no doubt you can see why 😉
Be seeing you !
I don't think I've credited Vir's actor enough, his facial expressions are absolutely brilliant whether it be comedic or serious, genuinely a phenomenal actor. Lord Refa is very interesting indeed, seems to be a very ruthless, cunning and Machiavellian character - we shall see where that story leads! That Sinclair cameo was everything! What does he know about the Vorlons? He knows about the Shadows? What's going on?!?! Haha loved this episode, thanks for the comment!
A great reaction. This definitely is one of those episodes that completely changes the board.
One of the first WHAM episodes
Amazing episode! Now I really can't wait to see how the story is going to unfold!
Wake me up before you go go.
This is one of my favorite Babylon 5 episodes.
Yeah, your reaction to the drink scene was cool to see - what I love about B5 is that it hit harder with a scene where a drink was passed than many shows manage with a massive SFX spectacle.
As for the many questions that you have from this episode, you'll get your answers in time! Some sooner than others, but I reckon you'll enjoy the journey
The drink scene makes me feel ill.
Maybe, but the effects sequence is glorious too. They wipe out the entire colony in about a minute . The music is excellent.
Absolute top tier episode for Season 2.
Can't say anything about it that hasn't already been said. And any praise, it just another 'well deserved' bit of praise.
It's funny how Jones is "seeing Vorlons EVERYWHERE"! LOL
This is where B5 starts to get REALLY good. All I will say is you are in for a ride.
Hi Euan! To call this episode a Shakespearean tragedy is a collosal understatement!
Great to see your reviews again Euan. Most of the other B5 reviewers are closer to your parents' age I'd bet, so the fresh vibe from you is a great change of perspective.
Thanks William appreciate the kind words, glad to bring a somewhat younger perspective to the show haha!
Londo goes to the dark side. And you met Ranger One.
Great stuff, its really kicking off now.
Such a great episode. That scene between Londo and G'Kar at the bar is just so sad.
Now you've seen how Londo and G'Kar die. But you don't know the context. Which is not what you think.
FYI Just starting because I missed the premiere, but it is IMDB, Internet Movie DataBase.
As the famous B5 catchphrase states, "And lo it commences..."
*begins
Enjoying to see yout reactions and speculations. A small whisper of wisdom: Not every ship is shadows, nor every shadow moves, this series has 110 episodes so try not to be too hasty expecting everything revealed at once.
A quick note: Your B5 playlist is missing the episode 8 of season2 ( A Race Through Dark Places )..
How awesome is it to see Sinclair again?
Most people are really surprised at the "Hello, old friend ...".
Michael O'Hare has a voice to envy.
That ranger plays a reoccurring character in a series called Supernatural, if you've ever seen that.
At the time when I saw this many many years ago, at age 10, I felt like the Narn and Centauri were a metaphor for the Israel-Palestine eternal conflict but I couldn't figure out who was who as both sides could fit either at different points in the cycle.
THIS! Was the episode that made me take notice, and realize there was something different about this series.
Before that, I sort of drifted into and out of watching it.

This is the next "jump" for the show.
Absolutely, this episode was something else entirely!
STRAP IN !!
Now you understand why this season is named after this episode.
Two new ships this time:
The Primus is 1586m long, with a crew of 1,424, and 8 twin barrel heavy pulse cannons. No fighters though, leaving it vulnerable in that regard.
The Vorchan is 360m long, has 80 crew, 2 twin plasma accelerators, missiles, and guided mines.
I think whoever came up with these crew numbers was on drugs at the time.
I'm pretty sure JMS just picked random numbers out of thin air for things like these. I don't think he has any idea as to how many people it takes to fully crew a vessel, nor how many casualties would happen when ships like these are destroyed (looking at YOU, BotL).
@@HikaruXavier without access to the individual model files for the ships, it's hard to be sure. They were all the correct size in relation to each other, so it would have been possible to get an accurate measurement based on the Star Fury model.
I think you're spot on about the crew numbers, but those numbers might also include personnel that are not involved in the operation of the ship, such as marines for boarding actions (like the stormtroopers in Star Wars).
We'll have have to strap JMS to a chair, shine a light in his eyes, and interrogate him. Or ask him politely.
@@HikaruXavier also, a fully manned aircraft carrier can carry up to 5,000 sailors, apparently. They're about 1,000m long so it might be possible.
Babylon 5 puts some off because sometimes it shows its budget (the makeup effects are fantastic though), and the CGI is barely acceptable at times…BUT, its the best thought out show ever maybe, the acting from some is truly marvellous, and the writing is fantabulous.
And I have the hugest man crush on G’Kar😂 he’s so utterly utterly lovely😂
The spinoff book "To Dream in the City of Sorrows" includes a bit from Sinclair's POV, where he chooses the words "Stay close to the Vorlon" and explains what he's thinking. But I wouldn't read it yet; given where you are in the series, it would be spoilery.

Now you know why people in the know consider B5 to be da bomb when it comes to sci-fi shows... The first season is a little shaky but after that.... whew.
Sadly this isn’t what the technomage meant. Not quite yet
Season 3 is all episodes of this caliber.
Except for "Exogenesis". 😉
I beg to differ but each to their own.
@@lonelyboy1977*cough* Grey 17.
I won't mention about 5 episodes in particular that arent
@@MrDdaland The thing about B5 is even in the seemingly unimportant episodes, there’s nearly always something in there that IS important that you’ll miss if you don’t watch it.
Yup a brilliant but tragic episode
