Mavic Mini ND Filters for Video and Long Exposure Photos

- The DJI Mavic Mini is a little handicapped because of the lack of exposure control in the app. We are not able to adjust the ISO and Shutter Speed of the Mavic Mini camera when shooting video. We do have full control in photo mode, which allows us to shoot long exposure photos using ND Filters. In this video, I show you how I dial in shooting long exposure photos as well as show you a few samples of using ND Filters for video with the DJI Mavic Mini.
Some issues I did run into when using the filters is hard stopping. You don’t want to hard stop and go with the drone or the gimbal will shift a bit. You have to make really slow movements with the sticks or else it will shift. Also when tilting the gimbal using the PL, I did see some red vignette coming from the ring. It would only come up when using it at certain angles and when pointed towards the sun.

For anyone wondering about the Mavic Mini, a few months after this video was created, DJI put out a software update and now you DO have full manual control over video.
Shutter speed? I don't think so.

*edit: In the DJI Fly app, In the bottom-right corner there is an icon of a camera. If the icon says "AUTO" you'll see next to it that you have access to the settings for EV (Exposure Value) and AE (Auto Exposure). If you press the icon the word "AUTO" will change to "M" for manual mode, and the EV and AE settings will change to ISO and Shutter. 👍

Seriously, the best Drone info channel I have found. Great useful info - thanks. Been using my Mavic Pro, Yuneec Typhoon and now a Mini for work for around three years ( just for simple construction progress photos) but never really got into the finer points of taking better photos - leaving that to post production of RAW images. You have inspired me to take more interest in getting better shots “on the job”, especially with the limitations of the Mini - which for access and safety, in some situations is clearly my Drone of choice.

How do we know that in video mode it decreases shutter speed and not increasing iso? I feel like nd filter have no use in video mode on mavic mini
We don’t know. But I do know that in bright days the mini can lean on the overexposed side. So exposure comp and filters will help.
You would notice it I guess.. you can just film yourself shaking your hand in front of the camera on a sunny day..if its more blurry with the filter it's lowering the shutter speed
@@FlytPath DJI released a new update for the MAVIC MINI for manual control of the camera. You can control ISO, Shutter Speed, etc. Hope you can do a video about that and how it helps for ND filters now.
What are your thoughts on polarizing filters considering you have to turn them to get them set right. Seem kind of pointless on a drone since you cant adjust once its up in the air

Just amazing how people freak out about how good the mavic 2 pro is..
But when you look at the Mavic mini taking the same pictures I REALLY CAN'T SEE ANY DIFFERENCE..
this is what these professional photographers have to realize when it comes to social media unless you're pointing out the differences in doing side-by-side which nobody ever does.
NOBODY NOTICES THAT EXPENSIVE CAMERA.
Especially if you know what you're doing pre and post production..
Almost like the professional photographers are stuck up in snobby. Saying I need an expensive camera with mechanical everything and a 1-inch sensor blah blah blah
But you're really don't.
I've seen people do excellent photography and video work with original mavic pro that even looked as good if not better than the phantom 4 pro because they know what they're doing..

Great video and thanks for highlighting this product. I recently tried to "work around" the limitations we have for video with the mini and hauled my ass to the beach for a sunrise shoot in an attempt to get the shutter speed desired. (results video on my channel). Unfortunately the very low light video was ruined by noise as the mini bumped the iso up and once the sun was up the amount of time before the video looked choppy was very short. ND's may give us a touch more control looking forward to trying.

Great video thank you. Can I ask you please do these affect the gimbal? I’ve seen some videos showing gimbal problems in the mini with filters.
Hard stop and go shifts the gimbal a little. I mention this in my description. I found that if you hard stop, the gimbal will shift a little, making you readjust the gimbal. Slow movements are what’s needed with a filter.

How much better is it now that we have manual mode in video now? Would these filters still be necessary? Or can you get similar results without the filter?
Hi Mate! Did I see the pol filter's frame in the two lower corners(07:15)? Was the filter fitted correctly, or what else caused that? Seems like a great set.
I have the Mavi 2 Pro but would love to have the Mini as well for those moments when it's just more discreet and convenient to fly the smaller drone.
Ya it feels tiny compared to the mavic 2. But man the mavic 2 quality is so good

How did you change your shutter speed in photo? I went to manual mode at night on my mini the other night and the shutter speed was grayed out or locked and wouldn’t let me change it. Only let me change iso. Any suggestion on how to fix this issue?

I've seen several negative reviews about the Freewell filters not locking on well enough and coming off during a flight. user err, or design flaw?
I just bought the polarizes for the mini, but the gimbal has a hard time supporting the weight, and the gimbal won’t stay level while panning. Also, in sport mode the gimbal fails completely and the camera points down. Have you noticed this problem?

Thank you for all the Mavic Mini videos. I feel like it might be the right starter drone. Never flown before, but I'm very into photography. One of my hesitations is that it doesn't shoot RAW files. I'm afraid my photo editing options with be restricted. Are there other starter drones that you'd recommend over the MM that do shoot raw files?

Is there a lot of “halo” around the edges when using the filters. The first part had a redness in the corners. Does this happen all the time ?
i think that specific filter has a gap between the filter and the lens allowing light to bleed in, either it's not seated correctly or its a manufacturing defect

Hi, maybe you can help me figure out why my red front LED'S won't stay on, they'll come on when you first turn it on, but after powering up they turn off, and I even went into the settings where it says enable front LED'S when taking pictures, which I did and they still won't stay on. I know that the Mavic Pro front LED'S stay on after powering on, but is the Mavic Pro Platinum different? That's what I have is the Platinum. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Do you think it would be possible to use the light functionality of the photo/camera on the Mavic mini to work out what the best filter would be for the video mode? Like could you try different ND filters in the camera/photo mode until you get to the 180 rule, 1/50, 1/60, or 1/48th of a second and then set it to video.

when in video mode: does the app at least give you feedback on the shutter speed? Cause then it's just an iterative process to change the ND filter until you hit the 1/50 sec (for 25p). I mean, you can even just go by what the photo app tells you, couldn't you?
Or will the Mini just not prioritize shutter speed consistently and decide to change the ISO one time, Shutter Speed the next and just do whatever it wants to?

I just started trying out some HD filters ok my Mavic Mini. Unfortunately the gimbal vibrates very much with the filter. I tried everything including recalibration and recentering but nothing worked. Without the filter it was always fine again. Any tips?

You can adjust your exposure manually on the mini. Lock it and then adjust it up or down. Kind of a cheater way to do it.
It's good to take time off and recharge your personal batteries.
