    Adding on the analysis, did you notice that for the final song of each saga (beside the first one) the recurring theme of "Just a man" appears?
    Cyclops: My goodbye-> Athena: " Because after all you are just a man"
    Storm: Ruthlessness-> When Poseidon sinks the ships: "When does a ripple becomes a tidal wave"
    Circe: There are other ways -> Odysseus: " I am just a man"
    Presumably, the final song of the Underworld saga is going to be Monster which perfectly close this theme of transformation of Odysseus from a man to a monster foreshadowed by the second song of the musical.

I think, they appear in works of other authors (I like to call them fanfics, even though, they, of course, are from legend so either everything or nothing is fanfic). Anyways, I didn't read about them in the Odyssee.
      Also, good point, that he never really loved them. I think, I remember Hermes telling Odysseus to consume that Moly-herb, fight Circe and then sleep with her to make sure, they were on the same side. Circe says the same later, but they both don't seem very enthusiastic about it, which, I think, supports your point.

    This is such a brilliant breakdown of There Are Other Ways! Truly my favorite song on this saga even though the rest are brilliant too.
    I feel like not enough people are talking about the foreshadowing in Puppeteer, though! The very first musical motif we hear in the whole saga is reminiscent of Open Arms-and ultimately it is through “showing one act of kindness” that Circe helps Odysseus and frees his men. Even though Odysseus got such a harsh lesson in ruthlessness in the last saga, here we see that even through all of that, there will still be times and situations where kindness and genuine honesty are a strength.

    • @OpMegs
      @OpMegs 6 месяцев назад +9

      I really do adore that Circe is more of a foil to Odysseus than immediately appears, because she mentions the fact she trusted once and it cost her and her nymphs quite a bit, so now she takes no chances. She's basically in the same fence sitting position as Odysseus in that she makes ruthless choices to protect her daughters but her heart isn't entirely hardened to the level of just taking it for granted. Which goes from subtext to main text when they duet the line in Done For, and is reinforced when Circe lets one act of kindness pay off. Circe is concerned with becoming the puppeteer in full as much as Odysseus is in becoming a monster.

    • @rp-cj1uy
      @rp-cj1uy 6 месяцев назад +7

      @@OpMegs Wow I really like your interpretation. One of my favorite parts pf the song is the end part of Circe's high note... it's just so gorgeous. I think reading your take helped me be a bit clear on those last 2 lines: "Maybe one day the world needs a puppeteer no more, or maybe one day the word needs a puppeteer moreeee"... it shows that it is not her choice to become this cold, ruthless, manipulative puppeteer, its her circumstance which made her into that (fun fact: this exact stuff is highlighted in the song Monster where he says "Did she learn to be colder when she got older..."). One day she hopes that she may no longer need to be a puppeteer....although why says next maybe it will need more... I'm not sure

    Okay and I also noticed the very first few notes of Puppeteer are a melody we've heard a few times, but the way the notes are arranged, they line up perfectly with, "we should try to find a way no one ends up dead" which is very fitting for the beginning of this saga since it's right after most of his men have been killed by Poseidon. Very cool!!

  • @Joel--yr6me
    @Joel--yr6me 6 месяцев назад +7

    I really like that, at the end of Done For, Circe says "everyone's true colors are revealed in acts of lust" and then in There Are Other Ways, she tries to seduce him, and it doesn't work, and THEN she chooses to help him... it took me too long to realize that he had passed a test.
    Also, I want to know what happened to Circe. She and her nymphs trusted strangers, and "faced a heavy loss," and she said that she had "been in love once before..."
    I'm reading WAY too much into this, but I like to think that she helped Odysseus both because he reminded her of the way she had been about her lover, and at the same time, was so unlike the way her lover ended up treating her.

    • @booknerd525
      @booknerd525 6 месяцев назад +1

      I think her lover might have been Poseidon. She seemed eager to help Odysseus when he said Poseidon was after him. In mythology, Circe wasn't a goddess, but a mortal witch. I think Poseidon was her lover once and gave her her powers, then left her.

    • @IgnisInvicta
      @IgnisInvicta 6 месяцев назад +1

      they faced heavy loss was sort of a Greek mythology come back. i can't remember the story right now but the nymphs do get...used sometimes so that could be what she is talking about. And i think the test was to see if Odysseus was like her lover and she wanted to make sure he wasn't.

    Another thing about ‘Just a Man’ it is played so many times throughout the musical whenever Odysseus feels guilty, when someone is trying to guilt him, or it’s Eurylochus being stupid. When Odysseus first sings ‘Just a Man’ he feels guilty over being forced to kill the baby even though he needs to or he’ll die later on. In ‘My Goodbye’ we hear Athena’s backup voices sing a part of ‘Just a Man’. Athena was trying to guilt Odysseus into staying her pupil but it doesn’t work. Then, in ‘There Are Other Ways’ Odysseus sings ‘Just a Man’ because he feels guilty for nearly cheating on Penelope. Finally, in ‘Mutiny’ we hear Eurylochus sing ‘Just a Man’ because he’s saying ‘I’m human and I need to eat so I’m gonna kill a cow’ and that leads to ‘Thunder Bringer’. Which. Oof. Jorge you’re a genius and I praise you for it but I also slightly hate you for it.

      @@MauM. That's actually what I thought because the underworld is a spooky place and it does make sense for them to release it on Halloween. Kind of a bummer that we’ll have to wait until fall for the next saga if it's true tho.

    this is one of the reasons I love Epic. You guys know how to tell a story!!! The Callbacks throughout the song all while keeping a smooth melody and transition is AMAZING!!! I'm so glad she pointed out/appreciated each one of them in this song. I can't wait for the day this is made into a live-action musical. It reminds me of the music in HTTYD and how there are callbacks with the character's themes. Keep going Epic!!!

    I cannot tell you how much I adore the fact that almost all the background parts in act 2 so far have been composed of either references to act 1's motifs and lyrics or setup for more motifs and lyrics later (like the "ody is scary now" motif in Different Beast that gets reused in King). we are five songs into act 2 and i am thrashing on the ground like a cat throwing a tantrum yall

    I've noticed all of these things too and it's why this is my favorite song from the musical.
    And I love how Odysseus talks about Penelope afterwards. And how it's his love for his wife that convince her to help him because as Circe said "everyone!s true colors are revealed in acts of lust" but in this case it was the resistance to abandon himself in an act of lust that revealed who Odysseus really is on the inside.

    I live for the little Easter eggs and callbacks and foreshadowing that hides in the smallest folds in each and every song. This is the main reason why I’m so obsessed with epic. I can’t wait for the rest of the sagas to have the whole thing to listen to and dissect in detail!

    It’s awesome to see someone get so into There Are Other Ways! I absolutely LOVE the whole saga but I adore this song! The hand drums absolutely SENT ME the first time I listened because the use of the hand drums seemed to symbolize that Circle had gotten him to go to bang-town with him 😆 and then Odysseus all but verified that with his comments on mistakes and to forgive him. That section of the song has a tugging to it that lures you in just like Circe and ooooooooh I just love it so much!
    Editing to clarify: I’m in and have been in the camp of Odysseus was not consenting to Circe since my days studying the story in college, and it looks like that direction was taken here since she casts a spell on him. I laughed out of surprise for the hand drums being used due to how they’re played matching perfectly with what they’re trying to represent, and not having expected such obvious imagery in the music

    I noticed this too and I love it so much, it reminds me of this tiny moment in the Spartacus show, anyone else seen that? There's a moment in one of the very last episodes where Spartacus is preparing for a battle/push towards the boarder, and he's looking down at the map after all his men have left and he's alone with his thoughts, and his and his wife's leitmotif (which is just a few notes, similar to Penelope's melody) plays quietly and just to be clear, this is season 4, his wife hasn't been a feature of the show since season 1, that story is long since resolved and he rarely mentions her, we haven't heard this bit of music in at least a year, but we immediately know what he's thinking, and sure enough he moves another bit of paper aside and his gaze is cast over his homeland on the map. He doesn't say anything, there's no image on screen of a flashback, nothing like that, but it does such a perfect job of conveying that longing that still permeates every moment he's not focused on something else. It was such an incredibly well crafted and powerful moment IMO and yeah this reminded me of that, this was superb.
    Anyways yeah I'm glad it gives you a happy that people notice this stuff, Jay. You do it so well and so many of us are into this. Me, my kid, my gf, and my bestie, we're all neurospicy and the layers you're putting into this is giving us happy brain scritches.

      I agree. I love Steven Dookie’s voice and if the song was like a half reprise of open arms while Odysseus sings something similar to Poseidon about Ruthlessness being his only option. It would also be super emotionally impactful. And it would explain why he couldn’t bring himself to fight Scylla, seeing as he seemed so resolute in “Monster.” @@MauM.

    My husband introduced me to Epic, and it started a whole thing where every Wednesday watch something related to Greek Mythology (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Blood of Zeus, next is Mission: Odessey). We also talk about it all the time, about different mediums, like an animated films series done by Powerhouse Studios or a stage musical (with an official recording release like Hamilton for those of us in the sticks, though I would totally find a way to get to my local playhouse if that ever happened) Anyway, all this to say that once this entire thing is done, any studio/production company would have to be pretty stupid not to adapt it if you optioned it, especially seeing the following you've gathered.
