Hello there :) I actually have heirloom (Gorham Sterling Strasbourg) dessert forks, just as you described, for cutting the bite of cake! Now I know what they are for! Also, I would have guessed that the spoon was for the coffee and used it as such :0 So fun to know the proper etiquette, thank you, Heidi!

I've found the fork AND spoon technique of cake consumption cumbersome. Therefore I'm a big fan of the three tine angled type of pastry fork. It's easy to just leave the dessert spoon off the place setting and the pastry fork becomes the only option. And thank you for your wonderful channel!

Seems most modern day restaurants serve dessert, whether it’s cake or crème brûlée, with a spoon only. I prefer to eat cake with a fork. Eating with a spoon makes me feel like I’m 2, so I politely request a fork. Is it only me, or does this spoon for everything drive others crazy too?

Hi Heidi. This is so helpful. Thank you!
By the way, how about pasta? What's really the rule about it? If we're in a fine dining/5 star restaurant, should we use spoon and fork, or just fork? Some people say use both while others say never use a spoon, just fork. So I'm not sure which to follow.

    • @HeidiDulebohn1
      @HeidiDulebohn1  2 года назад +3

Hello and thank you very much for your kind words!
Regarding pasta, yes, it's a thing and it can be intimidating! But, no worries, you can do it--no spoon required if it's a long pasta, simply use your fork to twirl a piece or two of pasta,--top tip--twirl a piece of pasta that is on the edge of your plate or pasta bowl. Use the plate to twirl against and it will be a nice, compact bit of pasta on your fork. We should do a video about this! Thank you for the idea!
Meanwhile, very best wishes for a lovely day, and best of luck with your pasta dish!

As an European, never understood why do the "zigzag" (as you say) if the proper way of eating is having the fork on the left hand. If you know the proper way, you don't have to zigzag anything. In my humble opinion. What are your thoughts?

    • @nisreen

      Hello!
Thank you very much for watching and leaving such a great comment!
Some historians believe that Europeans began using the zigzag method, and converted to the Continental as the New World, the Americans, started using the zig zag; (the continental meaning the fork stays in the left hand and the knife stays in the right hand.)
I do agree, the Continental way is much more efficient, and I think it looks more elegant.
As an American, I zig zag, but I was raised by a British mother, so I also use the Continental method. I must be a hybrid.
Both ways are correct, and in the western world you will mostly see the Continental. The zigzag method is unique to Americans.
There are some legendary stories from World War II about American spies being found out by using the zigzag method to eat, instead of the Continental way.
      It’s really a fascinating subject.

      Hello Kelly!
Yes, if you only have a fork, you can use the side of the fork to cut the cake! Honestly, it’s all about being reasonable, and if you’re dining with royalty or to state dinner, and you have a fork and a spoon you’ll know exactly what to do! But when you’re at home, and Dining informally, just be reasonable, and do you! The important thing about etiquette, is it all boils down to being a kind caring person. That’s it, it’s pretty simple. Cookies are generally considered finger food, and I think it would be fine to break it with your hands, one small piece at a time , and eat each small piece with your fingers. If the cookie is super crumbly, you should use your spoon to break it once small piece of time, and eat it with your fork.
But again generally cookies are considered finger food.

In the uk, if it’s cake and it’s for pudding we just use our hands with a napkin, from country homes to urban dwellings, in everyday living with friends and family that’s what we do. If it’s gateaux with a sauce perhaps or something sweet, or cake with afternoon tea at a restaurant (not at home, if at home all levels of society we still use our hands 😆) then we use a desert fork, the children usually are just given large spoons. I found your video because I was watching a u.s tv show and realised everyone was standing eating birthday cake using a fork and I was amazed I thought everyone was like us in England and just used our hands 😁

      Hello!
Thank you very much for watching the video, for your kind comment, and great question!
If you only have a spoon and a fork for dessert/pudding, then you will use the spoon to "cut" and eat from the fork.
But, sometimes, you will have a dessert fork and knife at the top of the place setting--instead of a spoon and fork. Or, sometimes, especially in Europe, a dessert fork and knife (or spoon) are brought to the table with dessert. In this case; where a dessert knife is present, you would use the dessert knife to cut the cake, and eat with the fork.
If you only have a spoon and a fork, you use those--any other knives used during the dinner would have been taken away before dessert is served, so not available.
Dessert knives are a real specialty utensil, shorter than a dinner knife, and you don't see them very often. However, I have seen a dessert knife and fork brought out with a fruit course. I once was served a whole banana during a fruit course and had to use the dessert knife and fork to unpeel, slice, and eat the banana--talk about tricky food!
The bottom line is if you're dining at the highest circles, this is the proper way to do things--but, please remember, etiquette, at its core, is about being kind and respectful.
Thank you very much for the terrific question!
      Kindest regards,
      Heidi

I disagree with you I was brought up eating cake with a ‘cutting’ / ‘pastry’ cutting fork so I’m more adept & used to eating cake with a fork, even if it’s not a pastry fork.
If there is ice cream, a lot of goo, or the cream isn’t stiff I use a spoon and only a spoon. Less faff. I think it might be only in the Southern USA using the side of your fork is rude, but I’d love to know if you know differently. I’m no expert. (from the UK - was brought up to hold cutlery the continental way, but have shifted fingers backwards as I have small hands)

    • @HeidiDulebohn1
      @HeidiDulebohn1  Год назад +3

      Hello Laura!
      Thank you for your comment!
Yes, I agree with you--if you have a pastry fork, it is designed to use the side to cut, and the cutting side is a bit thicker to aid in the cutting. So, yes, if you have a lovely cutlery set, which includes pastry forks and maybe even ice cream forks (they exist--amazingly). However, most of us don't have such an extensive collection these days, so I offered the fork and spoon etiquette.
You bring up such a great point about the etiquette about cutting with the side of a "normal" fork--I've been taught that in most cases, it is generally frowned upon across the Western world, but that too could be evolving.
One of the things that I love about etiquette is it is always evolving because it's an art form. I believe that at its core: etiquette is about being a kind, respectful, and caring person and not taking ourselves too seriously.
I'm sending very best wishes for a lovely day!
      Warm regards,
      Heidi💕🍴

I'm from the South (it's ALWAYS capitalized 😊) and have eaten in some pretty high falutin' places and never been looked at askance if I used the side of my fork. Many restaurants today use the same fork for salads as they have for desserts. Rarely do I find the angled tine type of cake fork, though I do have two sets of 12 for use at home.

There is absolutely no reason to use a fork with cake. None.

      Hello!
Oh, thank you for watching, and leaving this comment! You know, on a level a agree with you. However, sometimes, when you’re dining in very high circles, you are expected to cut with the spoon and use the fork to bring the cake to your mouth, but again, how often are we all dining at the highest circles?
The bottom line is, etiquette, at its core, is about being a kind, caring and respectful person no matter how you eat your cake.
Thank you and I’d love it if you kindly subscribe to my channel, and help me spread the word.
Sending you very best wishes for a terrific day!
      Warm regards,
      Heidi.💕🍰🍴🥄

Cake eating equals eating it with a spoon.
